Leonardo DiCaprio is back with Martin Scorsese, but this time they’re not in front of the camera. The longtime collaborators are producing a new film called Carthage Must Be Destroyed, an action thriller that is written and directed by Ted Griffin.

Griffin, who is best known for his work on Ocean’s 11, will be making his feature directorial debut with this project. As per the reports of Deadline, the filming will kick off in October this year in Rhode Island.

Carthage Must Be Destroyed: What The New Film Is About

The plot follows a lone drifter arriving in a decaying Rust Belt town. The place is under the thumb of a brutal crime syndicate, and the newcomer isn’t there to play nice. The drifter, drawing inspiration from classics like Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars, quietly starts...

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Can’t Get Enough Crime Drama, Frequent Collaborators Team for New Action Thriller
Image
One of the biggest double-acts in modern cinema is back at it again. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teaming up again, and this time they'll both be behind the scenes. The duo is producing Carthage Must Be Destroyed, a new action thriller from Ocean's 11 writer Ted Griffin. Deadline reports that Griffin will both write and direct the film, making it his feature directorial debut. It is set to begin production in October in Rhode Island. Carthage Must Be Destroyed will center around a drifter who comes to a crumbling Rust Belt town in the grip of a ruthless criminal syndicate. In shades of Yojimboand A Fistful of Dollars, the stranger sows the seeds of chaos amidst the town's corrupt power players, hoping to free the citizenry from their shackles.

It will be the first directorial feature for Griffin, who has previously helmed episodes of Terriers(which he created), Mad Dogs,...

Stephen King Shares Chilling Warning About Netflix’s Most Shocking Movie: “Beware the Last Act”
Image
Last week, I watched Messiah of Evil on Tubi (on my own recommendation). Midway through the film, Toni (Joy Bang) visits a movie theater because she’s bored in the zombie town. Sure, it spells her doom, but she does at least get to watch a pretty sick Western movie before her death. It got me thinking about how I kind of love Westerns. Yeah, they’re often problematic, but there’s a distinct thrill that few other genres of film can successfully capture. Even better than a Western? Horror westerns.

From Dusk Till Dawn, The Wind (a more recent example), and Ravenous are all classics. But when you think of horror Westerns, there aren’t many to choose from beyond nondescript zombie miners you might find in your local video store. One of the best comes with the added bonus of a Stephen King recommendation. Even better, it’s streaming now on Netflix.

The Frightening Frontier: Five Horror Westerns to Stream This Week
Image
The isolation of the Wild West, the ever-present danger of starvation, unforgiving terrain, and the rougher way of life in period settings make westerns well suited to the horror genre. Yet it’s not often that the two genres cross paths; the horror western is a niche subgenre compared to horror’s other genre pairings, like the horror-comedy.

Even the horror western’s more well known entries, like Near Dark or Ravenous, don’t appear on streaming often. Luckily, there are plenty of other entries in the horror western category on streaming, some overlooked, that capture the tension, isolation, and danger of the wild frontier.

Here’s where to stream five of them this week.

Every Movie Coming to Max in March 2025
Image
Max, as one of the most reliable streaming services, has access to one of the world's largest libraries of films — Warner Bros. Naturally, we should expect the platform to offer its users a plethora of options, and it does so by releasing movies from various genres on a regular basis.

In February 2025, for example, Max added some of the most popular films to its repertoire, such as Bad Boys and Final Destination, as well as original films like How I Let the Opus Dei. With March 2025 looking even more promising in terms of movie releases, here's what Max users can anticipate from the popular streaming service.

'Assassin’s Creed' Streaming March 1

Assassin's Creed is one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time, but the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender is the closest we'll come to live-action. While it isn't the finest live-action adaptation of a video game, the film...

‘Toxic Town’ Series Cast And Character Guide
Image
Netflix’s latest British miniseries, Toxic Town is centered around the real-life legal battle between the Corby Borough Council and the townsfolk whose children suffered birth deformities due to toxic waste pollution resulting from deliberate neglect and mismanagement by the authorities involved in the steel plant land reclamation. As the makers decide to approach the narrative from the perspective of the victim’s families and the residents of the industrial town, it is important to note that maternal figures gained prominence – the ones who were most affected/ blamed for a predicament beyond their control, as patriarchal society functioned that way, and still does. Aside from this aspect, the series also focuses on the bureaucratic corruption which preys on the socioeconomic vulnerabilities of small townships and ends up ruining the future of upcoming generations in diabolically selfish pursuits.

Netflix is dropping 7 movies and series this week
Image
In some cases below, you have one day in which to stream these movies or series, leaving Netflix in the first week of March. The good news is that, for the most part, these are all smaller titles. We apologize if any of them happen to be your favorite whatever, but it is not like Titanic is leaving your favorite streamer. (It isn't yet.)

One of the best movies to be leaving is called Ravenous. This is a Netflix Original that takes place in Quebec. A small town has to deal with a horrific flesh-eating plague. Sounds relatively simple, right? And maybe there should be zombies involved, and well, there might be. (No spoiler alerts here.) But the pacing of the flick is fantastic, and that only adds to the terror.

Meskina is another Netflix Original that is leaving. It, unfortunately, was panned by critics. It's the story of a...

A Brutal Winter Drove the Donner Party to Cannibalism [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]
Yellowjackets (2021)
A Series of Calamities

In 1846, the Donner-Reed Party set out from Independence, Missouri to make the journey west to a better life in California. What befell them was a horrific fate that some blamed on incompetence and others suggested embodied the dangers of manifest destiny.

In a new mini-primer for Murder Made Fiction podcast, Joe tells Jenn about the calamities that befell the group and left them stranded for the winter under 22 ft of snow with no food, which ultimately forced them to resort to cannibalism. The story includes their perilous journey across the Great Salt Lake desert, the dire conditions of the camp at Truckee Lake and Alder Creek, and the four (!) rescue attempts to reach survivors before they perished during the winter of 1946-47.

It’s a horrifying story about desperation, starvation, hubris, and the enduring will to live. It also involves the murder of indigenous people and the deaths of many children.

What’s Leaving Netflix in March 2025
Image
Pictures via Netflix, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Hulu

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.

As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.

Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

10 Box Office Flops From the 1990s That Became Cult Classics
Image
While Hollywood typically has a good instinct for turning great films into box office gold, as seen with Marvel's Avengersmovies, this isn't always the case. Considering how much money can be spent on films and how much competition there is, it's always easy for great stories to get lost in the cracks, only to find new love later on. Some movies enjoy success in the home video market as word-of-mouth spreads, while others are only ever appreciated by a small minority.

While some box office flops earned their failure, others crashed and burned despite being among the best of their era. The 1990s in particular had no shortage of fantastic movies that didn't make a strong impression in theaters, but have since earned the respect of fans of their respective genres. From gritty crime movies to stylish Westerns, the decade proved even the best movies can struggle to fill up theaters.

How Frank Marshall’s ‘Alive’ Scarred a Generation [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]
Vivos (1993)
We all have a movie we watched way too young. Maybe it was a risqué romantic drama with superfluous nudity or a grisly horror film we barely understood. Whatever the title or how we managed to watch, exposure to the film’s adult themes at a delicate age likely led to broad misconceptions or emotional scars we carry into adulthood.

For many Millennials, that movie was Alive. Frank Marshall’s fictionalized retelling of the Miracle in the Andes introduced a generation of kids to the concept of eating human flesh and terrified us with one of the most horrific plane crash sequences ever committed to film.

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Jenn and Joe continue their exploration of survival cannibalism with Marshall’s inspiration yet infamous film.

10 Horror Movies From The 1990s That Divided Critics
Image
Horror is a tricky genre, where it's hard to impress and effectively send shivers down the spine of all audiences and critics, and plenty of horror films from the 1990s prove this. Though the '90s is a year generally looked at as having some of the best and most influential films within the horror genre, there were a handful of films that earned a divided response from critics. More often than not, the films with the biggest divide between critics were those that combined horror with comedy.

Though it is possible to create a successful mix of the two genres, plenty of films fail in the eyes of critics, as divisive horror comedies tend to inadequately prioritize one genre over the other. Many of these films have earned cult followings and the critical reception has changed drastically over the years, with movies like Scream being viewed as a crucial film in the horror genre.

Since the earliest days of Hollywood, the Western has proven one of the most versatile and enduring genres in film, thanks to classics like The Searchers, High Noon, and the Dollars Trilogy. While many of the films made between the 1930s and 1970s took the genre to its peak, it experienced a notable decline going into the 1980s. As it has become less known to modern audiences, it has also produced some exceptional cult classics -- including a forgotten gem from 1999.

Western movies have found success in blending elements of action, adventure, character study, and even horror and comedy throughout the years. From hilarious parodies like Blazing Saddles to gruesome horrors like Bone Tomahawk, its versatility is matched...

Shangri-La Frontier's Sunraku Could Fight Lycagon Sooner Than Expected
Image
Shangri-La Frontier is a popular isekai about a fully immersive VR game that recently began its second season. The anime follows Sunraku, Rakuro Hizutome, as he navigates the in-game world. His trash-gaming expertise allows him to forge a unique path through the game's story. Along this path, he comes face to face with Lycagon the Nightslayer, one of the Seven Colossi. The monster easily defeats Sunraku, although he puts up more of a fight than the average player. This crippling loss causes him to receive "Lycagon's Mark", a terrible curse with a variety of notable effects. Initially, the curse does not bother Sunraku, until it prevents him from accomplishing his goals in the anime's most recent episode.

Eventually, Sunraku defeats Weathermon the Tombguard, with the help of his friends. Weathermon is also one of the Seven Colossi, and it takes every ability the party has to defeat him. After the battle,...

10 Most Underrated Military Horror Movies
Image
Military horror is a unique sub-genre that blends the gritty realism of a great war movie with the spine-chilling terror of good supernatural horror. These films delve deep into the psychological trauma of soldiers, the fear of the unknown, and often, the inescapable horrors of battle. With soldiers already experiencing the brutality of battle in the best war movies, the addition of supernatural threats elevates the tension and stakes. This makes these stories even more unnerving.

While many military-themed horror and supernatural films have gained significant attention, there are several that remain underrated and deserve more recognition. These films offer unique perspectives on both war and horror, using atmospheric tension, psychological dread, and supernatural forces to create deeply unsettling narratives. From haunted World War I trenches to eerie Nazi bunkers filled with undead soldiers, these movies have crafted unforgettable moments that stand out within the genre.

This 25-Year-Old Cult Horror-Western Is The Perfect Follow-up To Bone Tomahawk
Image
Bone Tomahawk has been praised by audiences and critics for its successful blend of horror and Western elements a trick arguably pioneered by a cult genre flick released in 1999. On the surface, it may not seem like the sweeping romance of traditional Western stories has much compatibility with the oppressive, often nihilistic tone of many horror projects. However, as Bone Tomahawk and its 25-year-old predecessor prove, it can be a match made in heaven.

Whereas many horror movies rely on supernatural thrills, Bone Tomahawk's success comes from its unflinching and undeniably disturbing brutality. The story centers around a rescue mission mounted by Kurt Russell's Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who sets out to retrieve some townsfolk from a tribe of murderous troglodytes. The drama is unremittingly violent, centering on the cannibalistic habits of the antagonists. This key detail clearly relates Bone Tomahawk to an underrated horror release Guy Pearce's 1999 horror-Western,...

How the Greatest Modern Horror Western Is Connected to Beowulf

Quick Links Bone Tomahawk Plot and Cast Bone Tomahawk Is the Greatest Modern Western Horror How Bone Tomahawk Is Connected to Beowulf

The Western horror genre may be slightly niche. Still, it is marked by many phenomenal movies, from J.T. Petty's atmospheric horror Western The Burrowers to the vastly underrated frontier cannibalistic thriller Ravenous. The genre has established itself as a favorite among fans of both genres, with a few stand-out movies leading the charge. Among these films, though, one stands out more than the others: the S. Craig Zahler-directed and Kurt Russell-led Bone Tomahawk.

Bone Tomahawk is a modern masterpiece that blends genre elements under the distinct vision of its director. However, the movie draws its inspiration from curious places, including one of the oldest recorded works of literature, Beowulf. By drawing on modern and contemporary forms of storytelling, we will look at how the two...

Horror Novelist Ray Garton Has Passed Away at 61

We have learned the sad news this week that prolific horror author Ray Garton, who wrote nearly 70 books over the course of his career, has passed away after a battle with lung cancer.

Eight Legged Freaks (2002) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The late 1990s and early 2000s were a weird era for films. There is definitely an influence from Y2K, and it seemed like there was an attitude that anything goes from some and a tightening of the belt from others. The world was in an odd place, and this influenced everything in culture like music, television, and films. 2002 gave us a wide variety of horror, like Queen of the Damned, Fear Dot Com, Cabin Fever, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dog Soldiers, and Bloody Mallory. This was the end of an era and the start of another for David Arquette it seemed. A time when he tested the “leading man” waters. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned as box office bomb after box office bomb came. Ravenous (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Ravenous was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

1999, a year of hope, a year of high fashion, nooo, no… 1999, the year when people prepared for Y2K, the year of all the odd choices when it came to fashion, and the year of interesting cinematic options. We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. Also out in 1999 was this movie about cannibalism in the olden days of the United States,...

Bone Tomahawk: The Scariest Western Ever Made
Image
Though not the most popular of subgenres within film, horror westerns have been gaining decent, fan-favorite traction as of late. The earliest example is The Rawhide Terror (1934), directed by Bruce M. Mitchell and Jack Nelson from a script that was penned by the latter. From there, one other horror western from the earlier years of Hollywood remains worth noting today. Featuring Michael Pate as a vampire gunfighter, Curse of the Undead (1959) isn't held in high regard, or anything. But it is noted by historians as an early example of a western-horror film.

It would be several more decades before the subgenre truly took off with regard to worldwide popularity. Filmmakers pumped out B-movie-level products until a certain release in the 1980s, called Near Dark (1987). A neo-Western horror hybrid, it's one of the greatest films of its kind, seeing direction under the great Kathryn Bigelow from a script she co-wrote alongside Eric Red.

Sam Neill in À Beira da Loucura (1994)
The Criterion Channel’s October Lineup Includes ’90s Horror, Techno Thrillers, James Gray & More
Sam Neill in À Beira da Loucura (1994)
These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

James Gray is the latest with an “Adventures in Moviegoing” series populated by deep cuts and straight classics. Stonewalling and restorations of Trouble Every Day and The Devil, Probably make streaming debuts, while Flesh for Frankenstein,...

Long Live the ’90s: The Criterion Channel Celebrating ’90s Horror With 14-Film Collection This October
John Carpenter
The ’70s shocked you, the ’80s gored you . . . now the ’90s come in for the kill!

The Criterion Channel has announced this year’s Halloween spectacular, which “celebrates an era that saw terror undergo unsettling new transformations.”

The team previews, “In the ’90s, horror movies got bigger budgets, became playfully self-aware, and even won some Oscars—but they’re just as nasty as what came before.

“Featuring cult heroes like John Carpenter (In the Mouth of Madness) and Abel Ferrara (The Addiction) plunging the dark depths of their uncompromising visions, established auteurs like Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker’s Dracula) taking on the genre, and new voices like Ernest R. Dickerson (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight) and Antonia Bird (Ravenous) offering fresh perspectives on familiar tropes, this selection curated by Clyde Folley offers a hair-raising tour through an oft-overlooked decade in horror that’s ripe for rediscovery.”

The Most Underrated 90s Movie Heroes
Image
The 1990s were one of cinema's most creatively prolific decades. The rise of the indie scene produced singular early masterpieces from the likes of Peter Jackson and Quentin Tarantino, with big studios following suit. Of course, it still produced its share of terrible movies, along with underrated gems that took time to find their audiences.

Said gems often involved strong performances from great actors, overlooked and sometimes forgotten amid their better-known works. A list of 10 of them appears below: protagonists from '90s movies who never quite gained the attention they deserved.

Johnny Mnemonic Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

In and of itself Johnny Mnemonic is a well-intentioned misfire, despite author William Gibson -- who helped create the cyberpunk genre -- adapting his own work with the screenplay. The film's ideas play far better on the printed page, and time hasn't been kind to either its by-the-numbers plot...

If You Like Yellowjackets, Ravenous Will Help Curb Your Cannibal Horror Appetite
Image
Even though "Yellowjackets" fans are always hungry for more, the Showtime series' sophomore season has come to an end. Season 3 has already been confirmed, but it'll be a while before it airs; for what it's worth, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 was 16 months, the former beginning on November 14, 2021, and the latter on March 24, 2023.

Fear not, antler queens, because there's a movie out there perfect to tide you over. "Ravenous," directed by the late Antonia Bird. Released in 1999, the film's genre is just as hard to pin down as that of "Yellowjackets" — "Ravenous" oscillates from horror to bemused comedy, sometimes in the same scene. What the two works do have in common is that they're both stories about people on the edge of civilization, goaded by supernatural forces to devour their fellow man.

Guy Pearce plays John Boyd, a cowardly soldier fighting in the Mexican-American war. Boyd became an accidental hero...

Henry Rollins
The Yellow Wallpaper (2021)
Henry Rollins
Henry Rollins thought he had it rough when, on Black Flag’s 1984 album Slip It In, he sang about “drinking black coffee, black coffee, drinking black coffee, staring at the wall.” But, hey, at least he got coffee.

That’s more than Jane, the protagonist of The Yellow Wallpaper, has.

Played by Alexandra Loreth (who also co-wrote the script with director K Pontuti), Jane is a woman in America during the 1800s, which means she’s basically a second-class citizen. She has, however, fulfilled her sole purpose in life, at least according to the patriarchal attitudes of the time: she’s given birth to a child.

Now, as a treatment for postpartum depression (once believed to be a byproduct of “female hysteria”), Jane is taken to a remote country manor to “rest.” In other words, she’s confined to a small bedroom with bars on the windows and furniture nailed to the floor.

‘Death’s Roulette’ Review (Paramount+)
Image
Stars: Manolo Cardona, Dagoberto Gama, Adriana Paz, Fernando Becerril, Juan Carlos Remolina, Maribel Verdú, Carla Adell | Written by Gavo Amiel, Julieta Steinberg | Directed by Manolo Cardona

Death’s Roulette (Uno Para Morir) opens on a familiar note, a group of strangers wakes up to find they’ve been kidnapped and brought to an unknown but opulent location for an unknown reason by an unknown person.

In this case, it’s a cop named Simon. Armando who is a surgeon. There’s a stewardess named Teresa and Jose who is retired.

The only ones with an obvious connection are three members of a family, wealthy businessman Esteban, his wife Marta, and their daughter Lupe, a human rights lawyer.

Director Manolo Cardona (Rubirosa) and writers Gavo Amiel and Julieta Steinberg let things play out pretty much as we expect they will. Everyone introduces themselves, there’s speculation about why they’re here and...

“Yellowjackets” Fan? Here Are 10 Lesser Known Cannibal Films to Feast On
Image
Cannibalism has emerged as the genre du jour in horror. With the success of last year’s Fresh and Bones and All as well as the second season of Yellowjackets finally digging into the human flesh, everyone seems to be exploring this taboo topic. From nightmare survival scenarios to narcissistic serial killers, these films follow humans or humanoid monsters who consume human flesh in one way or another. Some butcher and cook the meat, while others eat it from the bone, but all cannibal films offer a window into a world of depravity and a fascinating blend of horror and revulsion. We not only fear being eaten ourselves, but we often find ourselves imagining what the meat would taste like should we dare (or be forced) to take a bite.

Films about cannibals may seem like a rare delicacy, but a closer look reveals that the pickens are not so slim.

Skill Cards can be found throughout the game, but slots in the Skill Deck will be limited until more are unlocked.

The Skill Deck is where the inventory of available Skill Cards is found. Dead Island 2's Skill Deck has five separate sections, Abilities, Slayer, Survivor, Numen, and Innate, each with Skill Cards unique to them. For example, the Innate Skill Cards are two cards that come unique to the Slayer selected and can't be changed, but all other slots on the Skill Deck can be customized in any way. Mortos de Fome (1999)
Spiritual Successor to ‘Ravenous Devils’ in ‘The Kindeman Remedy’ Announced for PC [Trailer]
Mortos de Fome (1999)
After delving into Sweeney Todd territory with Bad Vices Games’ Ravenous Devils, developer Troglobytes Games (who ported Ravenous Devils to consoles) have revealed the spiritual successor to Ravenous Devils in The Kindeman Remedy. Only this time, instead of cooking and cannibalism, it’s cooking up the perfect anesthesia through downright devilish means.

Described as a “dark and twisted story-driven psycho-horror management game”, The Kindeman Remedy puts players in the shoes of Doctor Carl Kindeman, a disgraced physician whose unethical practices banished him from his medical society, and Sister Anna, a promiscuous nun with a special taste for fresh blood and a knack for secretly administering poison. With the aim of restoring his lost reputation by creating the perfect anesthesia, Kindeman accepts a job in an isolated prison, with the goal of being able to conduct his questionable experiments away from the spotlight.

Taking on the role of Kindeman and Sister Anna,...

First Love (A.J. Edwards)

Following The Better Angels and Age Out, A.J. Edwards’ third feature, First Love, is both a tender tale of blossoming romance and nuanced depiction of the pride and human frailties that can disrupt a decades-long bond. The writer-director, who got his start working with Terrence Malick on The Tree of Life, The New World, To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, and Song to Song, displays an immense amount of grace in this recession-era portrait of family and romance. Led by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Diane Kruger, Jeffrey Donovan, and Sydney Park, the film got a quiet release earlier this summer, but certainly deserves to find an audience in coming years.

Frontier Scum Is A Rules Lite Western RPG With A Heart Of Lead
Image
A few weeks ago, the Criterion Collection announced that their specialty December programming would include a block dedicated to winter westerns. Gathering together films like "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" and "Ravenous," the collection casts a wide net, drawing on the history of the American West to combine the classic with the mondo and beyond. This collection also served as the perfect framing device for my first campaign of "Frontier Scum," a 2022 tabletop roleplaying game from writer Karl Druid set in a twisted, funhouse version of the American West.

Falling under the Old School Renaissance or Old School Revival subgenre of games, "Frontier Scum" is a rules-lite game that is inspired by the dark fantasy RPG "Mörk Borg" and draws its inspiration from, quote, "gun and hat times." The game is a love letter to every incarnation of the Hollywood Western, albeit one that has little patience for some of the genre's more unsavory tropes.

The B-Side – In Conversation with Guy Pearce
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to talk to them directly!

Today is one of those glorious days. Conor and I are joined by Guy Pearce, the incomparable actor who’s got a new film coming out in theaters – Memory (April 29th!) – and plenty of accomplished past work to dig into as well.

We focus on The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hard Word, and Lockout (a.k.a. Space Jail). Plenty more is touched on in our 25 minutes of Guy Talk. Pearce explains his disappointment in Gillian Armstrong’s Death Defying Acts getting buried by Harvey Weinstein fifteen years ago, gets honest about certain movies he deems his “divorce films,” and highlights other B-Sides he’d...

Review: The Pale Door is a Terrific Genre Mashup
Image
There just aren’t enough horror westerns. There are a handful, sure, but they can more or less be counted on two hands. There are even fewer good ones: some, like Near Dark and Ravenous, are memorable and deserving of classic status. Some, like The Burrowers and Ghost Town, are a lot of fun. The rest tend to be titles like Dead in Tombstone and are best left forgotten. One of the most recent hybrids, 2015’s Bone Tomahawk, is considered “fringe” horror at best by some, not considered horror at all by others.

Director Aaron B. Koontz (Scare Package) obviously agrees with me about this lack of horror westerns, which is why his latest film The Pale Door is a terrific genre mashup that finds a traditional oater interrupted by a supernatural nightmare. Zachary Knighton plays the leader of a gang who scheme to pull off a daring train heist.

Film Review: 301, 302 (1995) by Park Chul-soo
Image
The way to a man’s heart is allegedly through his stomach, but as with all things we love, this wisdom old as the patriarchy itself calls for the hashtag #itscomplicated. Whether this particular saying is true or not, many emotions are passed in our digestive system though tiny mechanisms in brain that make us crave for certain type of food, or avoid it at all costs.

“301,302” screened as part of the Korean Cultural Centre UK‘s “Trapped! The Cinema of Confinement” programme

Asian cinema has a very special relationship with food. For quite some time, dinning rooms or restaurant tables have been playing a crucial role in presenting the key movie characters, their milieus and thoughts, influencing the narrative, often turning into the main stage. It is very hard to imagine a Hong Sang-soo film without a variety of food and an impressive amount of Soju or Makgeolli flowing...

Rick & Morty: The Duo's 10 Closest Calls, Ranked
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland in Rick e Morty (2013)
Rick & Morty is a show founded in ridiculousness. Its titular protagonists traipse across an infinite world of different universes, meaning both anything is possible and, as will be explored in this list’s ultimate items, nothing really matters. All of this is not to mention that it is, of course, primarily a comedy show.

Ravenous fans, however, can often not help themselves but to be wrapped up in the science-fiction adventure aspects of the current Adult Swim juggernaut. They break down theories and trade fan fiction and art that reveal excitement about much more than a few adult cartoon laughs. So despite Rick and Morty always evading danger in a show that’s just for kicks anyway, we hold our collective breath at these moments.

10 Western Books Too Twisted To Be Made Into Films
The Western novel, when written by laconic authors like Louis L'Amour and Max Brand, fills its reader with bucolic imagery of pastel sunsets, picturesque vistas, bustling towns, and charismatic cowboys. But there is a subgenre of Weird Westerns, Horror Westerns, and Gothic Westerns that take the tropes of the Old West and combine them with the macabre, the supernatural, and the truly bizarre.

In recent decades, films have been made to capitalize on this genre like Ravenous, Bone Tomahawk, and The Dark Tower. They continue to be successful with a niche audience, perhaps because viewers don't want the true horror of the Old West to pollute their fantasies. Perhaps with the popularity of small-screen adaptations like Deadwood, this won't be the case forever. Here are 10 Western books too twisted to be made into films.
