In 1969, the BBC scored a coup. The network tapped none other than Joan Crawford, one of the largest (or larger-than-life) film legends to narrate a documentary — which the U.K.’s BBC Four is now unearthing on August 14 and 15 — about the largest legend of them all: Greta Garbo. Both stars had been under contract at MGM back in the ’20s and ’30s, during the heights of the studio system as well as that patricular studio. The two icons, however, barely crossed paths.
Garbo — an infamous recluse until her dying day — didn’t socialize with her fellow actors. Personal appearances were off the table and, even though she co-starred with Crawford in 1932’s Oscar-winning “Grand Hotel,” the two didn’t share any scenes. MGM actually had to composite a cast photo to make it appear like Garbo was ever in the room with more people than absolutely necessary:

Can everyone time-travel except us?!
That’s how we felt after watching the premiere of Outlander‘s prequel, Blood of My Blood, which got underway Friday. The spinoff’s first two episodes introduced us to Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, and Claire’s parents, Julia and Henry. By the end of the first hour, via the wonder of time-travel, all four of them exist in the 18th century. (For details on the how and why, make sure to check out the premiere recap, which covers Episodes 1 and 2.)

The ripple effects of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike continue. On Friday, August 8, the WGA announced that Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar had been expelled from the union for writing the HBO limited series, “The Sympathizer,” while their fellow writers were picketing. This is not the first discipline action from the union in regard to the strike. Reportedly seven writers have been docked for violations.
The historic 148-day strike took up several months of 2023 — mostly simultaneously with the SAG-AFTRA strike — and resulted in a new contractural agreement between the writers and studios that increased wages, set standards for writers’ rooms, and included provisions for streaming residuals and framework for AI regulations. It had a significant impact on the Los Angeles economy, as well as the film industry at large, as studio lots sat dormant and theaters, networks, and streamers felt shockwaves in their release pipeline.

NBC‘s summer disaster docuseries Survival Mode goes beyond the attention-grabbing headlines and straight to the heart of the matter. Over nine episodes, NBC News crews interview ordinary folks, first responders, and loved ones who persevered in the face of utter tragedies — some caused by Mother Nature, some man-made (Amtrak 501 derailment on July 28). The upcoming August 11 episode on the Fort Worth Pileup is a bit of both. In February 2021 in Fort Worth, Texas, an unusually chilly winter freeze brought black ice onto a highway during a pre-dawn commute that resulted in a 133-car pile-up, six fatalities, and at least 65 injuries. “Everyone coming down the hill and around this turn [on the highway] couldn’t see it until it was too late,” showrunner Chris Cassel explains. “By the time the sun rose, it was just a scene of incredible devastation.” Telling their stories are survivors including Destiny, a young woman who was gravely ...

NBC has announced that the 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” will hit the airwaves October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since “SNL” has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series’ most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie — about but unaffiliated to the series — about the making of its first episode.
The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep appeared in her very first “SNL” sketch, for heaven’s sake.

With the third season of The Gilded Age ending this Sunday, and the third Downton Abbey movie hitting theaters next month, we couldn’t help but wonder… when the heck are these two Julian Fellowes-created franchises finally going to collide?

Noah Wyle may end up being the only former ER series regular to appear on The Pitt, but in a new interview, the actor says “never say never” to an onscreen ER reunion on the latter medical drama. “The success of this show has brought to our awareness that there’s some really high-profile actors that would love to come on our show, and it’s super tempting to want to go after them, but you run the risk of it being a little distracting,” Wyle told Variety. And any distractions would be detrimental to The Pitt’s mission of depicting the lives of healthcare workers in a broken healthcare system in a fractured American society. “One of the great things about Cathy Sandrich, our casting director, is she brings in these people that you may know that work, but you don’t necessarily bring their intended baggage to the...

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 is filled with many obvious Easter eggs — but apparently, fans missed one of them in the form of a cameo from Jenny Han. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer of the beloved book trilogy alerted viewers to her nearly undetectable presence in Season 3, Episode 5 of the Prime Video show. “I do make a cameo in this episode,” Han, an executive producer for the series and director for Episode 5, told the publication. “It’s just my voice. The reason why I’m even saying it now is because I don’t think anyone’s going to pick up on it, it’s like the tiniest thing, but it made me laugh.” The episode titled “Last Dance” features many scenes narrated by Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) for the first time. By contrast, Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and sometimes Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) have narrated all the other episodes.

Not just anyone could attend the recent Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special — tickets went to SNL alums and other Hollywood stars — and that star-studded audience made for a “terrible” reception to the special’s sketches, according to Pete Davidson. It’s true! I’m guilty of this.” Meyers teased Davidson, saying, “I remember when [your pre-taped sketch] was playing, you were the only one laughing. [Warning: The following post contains major spoilers about the series finale of Resident Alien, Season 4 Episode 10, “The End is Here.”] The end is here, alright. And we’re not Ok with it. One of the best sci-fi shows of the past decade has left our orbit in a series finale that was as full of heart, hope, and humor as it has been since Patience, Colorado’s Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle was first taken over by a Law & Order-loving alien with an unpronounceable name (the Emmy-robbed Alan Tudyk). Thankfully, it was full of resolved storylines and wonderfully set-up futures for our favorite humans, as well. That’s due in large part to creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan‘s suspicion that the series wasn’t long for this world after its move from Syfy to USA for the fourth season. “I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season,” he told us back in July ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Wednesday Season 2, Part 1.] Wednesday‘s second season is half over, but a big question looms as we head into Part 2 this September. Who is Morticia’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) sister, Ophelia? While she’s only been mentioned by Morticia onscreen, we can’t help but wonder if she’ll make an appearance before the season is through, with the buildup towards the second half. As fans saw in Part 1, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) had begun to abuse her psychic abilities, and she experienced black tears, a seizure spell, and more symptoms from trying to use her gift to solve the mystery of who was behind Jericho’s murderous murder of crows. As viewers learned, it was Judi Spannegel (Heather Matarazzo) who was behind the deadly attacks as she continued her father’s legacy of experimenting on Outcasts in the basement of Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. According to Morticia, Ophelia pushed her abilities to the extreme...

“Pee-wee as Himself” offers a refreshing contrast to celebrity documentaries shaped by estate-approved image control. Director Matt Wolf approached the film as a gay man profoundly influenced by “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and its message of non-conformity — and as someone eager to unpack the complexity of Paul Reubens, a brilliant artist who re-entered the closet and disappeared behind his iconic persona to thrive in Hollywood.
However, Wolf didn’t expect the project to nearly break him. It changed him personally and professionally — but it also earned five Emmy nominations, including Best Director. On this week’s Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, he reflected on the toll of making a film about his idol.
Wolf’s introduction to Reubens came through Josh and Benny Safdie, who would later come aboard as producers.
“Paul had met with other directors whom he either didn’t connect with artistically or who were not open to his level of involvement,...

John Leguizamo had a few words for Dean Cain after the former Superman actor shared that he plans to be sworn in as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
“What kind of loser volunteers to be an Ice officer?” Leguizamo said in a front-facing camera video posted to his Instagram on Friday. “What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are has/been.”
Off of Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ “Superman” opening at the box office in July, Cain has ridden on the coattails of his most memorable role’s renewed relevance and engaged in his biggest wave of press engagement in some years.

Host Phil Keoghan sat down for a chat with Big Brother host Julie Chen Moonves to discuss how the Big Brother alums fared on The Amazing Race. “They’re savvy. Julie, you’ve created some savvy creatures,” Keoghan teased of the new competitors in an interview with Et. “They came in hungry, confident, a little cocky. I think they got humbled in the first leg. It was very, very competitive.” The Amazing Race’s Instagram shared silhouettes of contestants for the upcoming season on August 8, which premieres on September 25 at 9/8c on CBS. Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon) has come a long way since the days of wearing short pants and dabbling in prop comedy. In Season 14 of King of the Hill, the self-assured young man has grown into a confident and poised adult who knows who he is and where he’s headed. But for longtime fans of the show, the seeds of Bobby’s transformation were always there — you just had to know where to look. At just 12 years old, Bobby stood out. He possessed an emotional intelligence far beyond that of his peers, boundless empathy, and an unapologetic individuality that set him apart. Unlike other kids his age, he never caved to trends, backed down from bullies, or compromised his beliefs. Add in his relentless optimism, and Bobby became a symbol for underdogs: unflinching in his self-worth, quietly brave in his convictions, and proudly himself in a world that often expected conformity.

Last week’s episode of Raw had it all — a wild burn from Becky Lynch to Nikki Bella, Penta rocking Xavier Woods’ giant hat, and a monumental main event as LA Knight faced Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship. It seemed like Knight’s best shot, as Rollins had no assistance from his squad after Raw General Manager Adam Pearce barred Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed from ringside.
But it was Cm Punk who came from out of nowhere to attack his longtime nemesis Rollins, resulting in Knight being disqualified and ultimately opening the door for Breakker and Reed to pop up and attack Knight and Punk.
Roman Reigns arrived at the ring to assist Knight and Punk, but was ultimately overpowered by Rollins, Reed, Breakker — at the end of the night, it was the latter three, Paul Heyman’s coalition The Vision, who where left standing.

Hank’s next-door nemesis Kahn is back in Hulu’s new King of the Hill revival — but you might notice he doesn’t exactly sound the same.
Kahn, an immigrant from Laos who loves to needle Hank for being a hillbilly, was voiced by a white actor, Toby Huss, during King of the Hill’s original Fox run, which ended in 2009. But for the revival, the role was recast, with The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng (who was born in Malaysia and grew up in Singapore) taking over as Kahn.

While Yellowstone might be gone, the Yellowstone universe and its creator, Taylor Sheridan, are thriving. Y: Marshals, a CBS series centered on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), is currently in production with a planned 2025–26 midseason premiere. A new Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) show (rumored to be titled Dutton Ranch), is also in the works, while 6666 was announced as another spinoff. Meanwhile, series such as Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown continue to keep Sheridan’s name at the forefront of the television landscape. But one show that doesn’t seem to have much traction is The Madison(originally titled 2024). The last update on Sheridan’s Montana-centered drama came in October 2024, when Y: The Last Man alum Ben Schnetzer was cast as “a rancher,” sparking speculation about whether he might be playing The Madison‘s very own version of Rip Wheeler. Prior to that announcement,...

Since it shattered records around the world with Season 1, Wednesday is no longer just a TV series; it’s a sensory universe in which every detail, big and small, matters in its chilling, tactile, and delightfully dark look and feel. With Tim Burton directing the series and creators Al Gough and Miles Millar back at the helm, you know that every costume, hairstyle, fireplace, and piece of zombie prosthetics was dreamed up with wicked inventiveness and with a keen eye to storytelling. They’re cranking up the volume on everything in Season 2 as our antihero Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) faces ever more sinister danger and uncovers shocking secrets at Nevermore Academy.
“Season 1 was a table-setter, and we saw a lot of the world, but there’s still a lot of the world left to see,” says Gough. In Season 2, Millar says, “We had a broader canvas and more toys...

Jenna Bush Hager hasn’t cried many tears since Hoda Kotb‘s Today departure. The TV personality made the confession while chatting about astrological signs with her guest host, Matt Rogers, on the Friday, August 8, episode of Today With Jenna & Friends. “I’m a Sagittarius. Does that make sense?” she asked Rogers, who replied, “I think so. I’m a Pisces, Pisces, Cancer, which is, like, I could start sobbing at any second.” Bush Hager noted that she cries “all the time,” stating, “I do it so often that it’s just like laughing. They’re like, ‘Here Jenna goes again.’” However, Bush Hager revealed that she “stopped” crying so much after Kotb bid farewell to Today earlier this year. “My heart was kind of closed off.” “Are you ready to open your heart again?” Rogers asked his cohost, after which they both started laughing. 10 years after she joined Today as correspondent,...
