Rapid Fire: Brandon Lee’s Action Epic is the Best Movie You Never Saw!
Image
The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.

The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.

The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.

“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.

R.I.P. Peter Jason, prolific character actor and John Carpenter regular, has passed away at 80
Image
Over the course of a career that stretched back to 1967, Peter Jason racked up more than 270 screen acting credits, turning in performances that inspired legendary filmmaker John Carpenter to name him “one of the great character actors in cinema” – and to cast him in seven different projects: Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., and Ghosts of Mars. Sadly, Carpenter has now had to take to social media to break the news to his fans and followers that Jason has passed away at the age of 80. Carpenter wrote, “His first movie was Howard Hawks’ Rio Lobo. He was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.“

It is true that the 1970 film Rio Lobo was Jason’s first theatrical feature, but he already had three years of TV acting to his name at that point, with credits...

DJ Khaled, Tekashi 6ix9ine ‘Marked For Death’ as Black Coffins Appear on …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Imagine waking up in the morning to find a black coffin propped against the side of your home.

That’s the spooky experience that two popular hip hop artists endured this week, and authorities are still trying to figure what the hell is going on.

The latest victim of this bizarre trend is DJ Khaled.

According to a new report from TMZ, two men disguised as delivery drivers recently gained access to Khaled’s Florida mansion.

Steven Seagal: His First Five Movies Ranked
Image
It can’t be denied that as far as the old-time action heroes go, Steven Seagal doesn’t get much respect these days. A whole lot has been written about Steven Seagal’s behaviour off-screen (much of it by us), and I’m not going to rehash it all here, but suffice it to say there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of goodwill left over for the former ponytailed action hero. While many would say he’s become a parody of himself in recent years, one shouldn’t forget that, at the start of his career, Seagal was ultra-popular. His Aikido moves, plus his tall, almost lanky figure and quiet demeanour made him unique among action heroes of the day. And, if you look at his filmography, his first five movies are really good as far as action flicks of the era go. Everything else? Well, not so much,...

Steven Seagal once tried to throw Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau out of a meeting room
Image
A while back, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests. One of them was William Osborne,...

Star Trek: Voyager Followed A Gene Roddenberry Rule That Left Little Room For Error
Image
In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Tuvix", a transporter accident fused the stern, logical Vulcan Tuvok (Tim Russ) with the jolly hobbit-like chef Neelix (Ethan Phillips) into a single being. This new being, who says he's named Tuvix (Tom Wright) possesses memories and personality traits from both Tuvok and Neelix, which is a matter of great consternation from Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the crew of the Voyager. Tuvix soon finds that he likes his new amalgam personality, finding happiness and agency as an individual.

Soon, however, the Voyager engineers find a way to reverse the effects of the transporter accident and separate Tuvix back into his two constituent beings. Tuvix objects, of course. To do so would mean to murder him. Surely a newly created person has rights just as much as any other member of the crew, and Tuvix would like them to be protected. Notoriously among Trekkies,...

Steven Seagal once broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for a Bond movie
Image
Many people may not know this, but before Steven Seagal’s action movie heyday, he worked as a martial arts instructor and choreographer. Most famously, he was super agent Michael Ovitz’s martial arts teacher. Ovitz, notoriously, thought he could make anyone a movie star, and proved it by securing Steven Seagal a movie deal at Warner Bros, where he made Above the Law… and the rest was history.

Another guy Steven Seagal trained was Sean Connery, who was one of Ovitz’s first major clients. The agent paired Connery up with Seagal to get him into shape for the unofficial James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. Connery was fifty-two at the time and had a couple of fight sequences in the film, so Seagal was brought in to whip him into shape. One day, while sparring, Seagal broke Connery’s wrist. The urban legend is that Connery did something that made him angry,...

The Phantom of the Opera (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the JoBlo Horror kitchen today...

Image
Dwight Little’s legacy falls into one of three categories: horror, action, and TV. From the horror couplet that is Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and the Robert Englund-starring Phantom of the Opera to the action trilogy of Rapid Fire, Marked for Death, and Murder at 1600, as well as his TV work (The X-Files among his most-known projects), Little has managed to reinvent himself numerous times over his 30+ years career.

It’s not an easy task to stay relevant in an ever-evolving landscape, especially in the age of streaming, but Little’s instincts have always guided his creative hand. With his new memoir, Still Rolling: Inside the Hollywood Dream Factory, the filmmaker walks the reader through various stages of his career, shares insider tips and tricks, and regales with celebrity encounters.

Here’s What’s Leaving Max in October 2023
Anne Rice
Earlier this year, Max announced it would be housing over 200 episodes of AMC Networks’ television at no additional cost to subscribers beginning in September.

That two-month window is coming to an end, so you’ll want to catch up on “Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire” Season 1; “Dark Winds” Season 1; “Gangs of London” Seasons 1 and 2; “Fear the Walking Dead” Seasons 1-7; “Killing Eve” Seasons 1-4; “A Discovery of Witches” Seasons 1-3; and “Ride with Norman Reedus” Seasons 1-5 while you still can.

A number of great horror titles are leaving at the end of October as well, including: “A Cabin in the Woods,” “Beetlejuice,” “Eight Legged Freaks,” “From Hell,” “It” and “It: Chapter 2,” and several more. They’ll be great to put on while you host your Halloween bash.

Above the Law: Revisiting Steven Seagal’s star-making debut
Image
Warner Bros – circa 1986. A bunch of powerful, suit-wearing studio execs are summoned to a studio lunch like no other. They’re set to observe an Aikido demonstration by a superstar trainer named Steven Seagal, previously known as the fight choreographer who broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for Never Say Never Again. By the end of the demonstration, mangled stunt men lie on the floor while a blood-stained Steven Seagal walks away with a movie deal that – unbeknownst to all – will establish him as perhaps the hottest action star of the early nineties, only for his career to collapse under the weight of his own ego eventually. But, in the early days, the sky was the limit for Seagal, and his first movie, Above the Law, is an impressive big-screen introduction to one of the most enigmatic movie stars of his time.

Above the Law stars Steven Seagal as Nico Toscani,...

Michael Caine gave backhanded compliment to Steven Seagal at On Deadly Ground premiere
Image
After a string of “Steven Seagal is…” movies — Above the Law, Marked for Death, etc. — it was time for him to direct his first: 1994’s On Deadly Ground. It, expectedly, was an absolute dud, something that co-star Michael Caine knew and acknowledged at the premiere.

In one of the many incredible stories from Nick de Semylen’s book “Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage” – which chronicles the best and worst action flicks of the ‘80s and ‘90s – it’s revealed that Michael Caine had a rather coy way of expressing his views on On Deadly Ground to Steven Seagal, who he was seated next to. Once the lights came up, Caine delivered his verdict to his co-star/director: “I really didn’t think it would be anywhere near this good.”

Seagal, for his part, held no grudge against Michael Caine for his...

Marked for Death (1990) with Steven Seagal (Reel Action)
Steven Seagal
1990 was a big year for Steven Seagal. After blasting his way to fame in Above the Law, Seagal had two movies open to boffo box office in 1990. First there was Hard to Kill, which paired him with future wife Kelly LeBrock, while 1990's Marked For Death, the only film he made away from Warner Bros in his heyday, was an even bigger cult success. To this day, it's considered one of the pony-tailed one's greatest films, with it pairing him against a Rastafarian…...

Duncan Jones To Direct First TV Series With Adaptation Of Thriller Novel ‘Killer Intent’
Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbell in Warcraft: O Primeiro Encontro de Dois Mundos (2016)
Warcraft and Source Code filmmaker Duncan Jones is to direct his first TV series: an adaptation of thriller novel Killer Intent.

Liberty Films, the London and La-based indie run by Stuart Fenegan and Jones, will produce the adaptation of boxer-turned-lawyer Tony Kent’s well-received book.

Killer Intent is the first in a series of thrillers about Jack Reacher-type intelligence agent Joe Dempsey. In the novel, when an attempted assassination sparks a chain reaction of dangerous events across London, Britain’s elite security forces are powerless to stop the chaos threatening to overwhelm the Government. As a dark conspiracy unfolds, three strangers find their fates entwined: Dempsey; Sarah Truman, a CNN reporter determined to get her headline; and Michael Devlin, a Belfast-born criminal barrister with a secret past.

Jones will direct and executive produce the series. Anglo-Irish writer Kent will be adapting his novel alongside an American-style writers’ room of established TV talent,...

Steven Seagal in Marcado Para a Morte (1990)
Nintendo Switch Announces 20 New Indie Games
Steven Seagal in Marcado Para a Morte (1990)
Nintendo has just revealed that they are going to be releasing 20 brand new indie games for the Switch console, which is great news for the people who are lucky enough to own one. The Switch made its debut in March of this year and is still a hot ticket item, meaning they are still very hard to obtain. There are even websites dedicated to checking store and online availability to alert Nintendo fans when the Switch console becomes available in their area. The consoles are obviously available on eBay and Craigslist for ridiculous prices while even big-name stores like Gamestop are selling what they call "bundles," which inflate the price to match the pricing of the third-party market.

In addition to being nearly impossible to find, Nintendo has also received criticism for a lack of games for the Switch, a common complaint whenever a new console is released by the video game innovators.

Robert Patrick Goes on a Murderous Rampage in His Upcoming Thriller Last Rampage
I've got a trailer for a great looking thriller for you to watch today for a film called Last Rampage. The movie has a modern day western vibe as Robert Patrick escapes from prison and goes on a murderous rampage as he is being hunted down by Bruce Davison. The movie also stars Heather Graham and is based on a true story. Here's the synopsis:

In the summer of 1978, convicted murderer Gary Tison (Patrick) and his cellmate Randy Greenawalt (Chris Browning) staged a daring escape from an Arizona State Prison, with the help of Tison’s three teenage sons. Their murderous rampage through the southwestern desert shocked the nation with its brutality. While Sheriff Cooper (Davison) hunted the men down, Tison's wife (Graham) vehemently defended her family in the press.

The movie is an adaptation of the book Last Rampage: The Escape of Gary Tison written by James W. Clarke.

Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Galaxy of Terror, Freddy vs. Jason) assumes the classic role of The Phantom in this shocking, nerve-jangling retelling of Gaston Leroux’s timeless tale of music, madness and murder.

An aspiring opera singer finds herself transported back to Victorian-era London – and into the arms of a reclusive, disfigured maestro determined to make her a star. The silver-throated Christine (Jill Schoelen, The Stepfather) enjoys success through the arrangements of her new lover (Englund)… until she realizes that he has been committing unspeakably grisly murders in her honor and won’t stop until he’s completed his masterpiece…...

Scream Factory Delays The Phantom of the Opera (1989) Blu-ray Release
Though he’s best known for playing the man of your nightmares, prolific actor Robert Englund has played a plethora of memorable roles over his impressive career, including his turn as the titular villain in 1989’s The Phantom of the Opera. Scream Factory is bringing Dwight H. Little’s take of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel to Blu-ray, but it will now take a little longer than anticipated.

Initially set to be released on January 13th, Scream Factory’s Blu-ray of The Phantom of the Opera will now come out on February 17th. Extras will be announced next month. In the meantime, we have the official cover art and the delay announcement from Scream Factory:

“Slight delay for our upcoming release of The Phantom Of The Opera. Originally slated for 1/13, it will now move to 2/17. Our apologies for the extension but we are trying to make it the best possible...

Fourth Update For Titanfall Is Imminent, Adds Featured Game Mode Option
Respawn’s hyper-kinetic first-person shooter, Titanfall, is set to receive its fourth content update in the coming weeks, the studio has announced.

The rather extensive update is poised to introduce a series of new in-game features, including an all-new multiplayer option entitled ‘Featured Game Mode,’ which will allow Respawn to draft in novel game modes on a regular basis.

First up on this round of rotation is the Marked For Death mode, a style of play that labels one user as the Mvp and forces the remainder of the group to protect them at all costs. And though it isn’t clear how long Marked for Death will remain on Respawn’s playlist, the studio hinted that it will be replaced by Wingman Last Titan Standing thereafter.

Elsewhere in the update, players can expect 14 Titan Burn Cards replete with stat-boosting abilities along with Titan Insignias and further enhancements to Titanfall’s overall matchmaking.

Steven Seagal Won't Do an 'Expendables' Movie and Has Some Thoughts on Liam Neeson
I used to love watching Steven Seagal movies. Movies such as Under Siege, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, Above the Law and Executive Decision. But we're talking a long time ago now and I think the last time I went to go see a Seagal movie in the theater was 1994's On Deadly Ground. The guy has now become something more of a curiosity than anything else, though he doesn't seem to be done with movies just yet, but that doesn't mean you should ever expect to see him in one of the Expendables movies. In an interview with The Big Issue he was asked why he hasn't starred in one of the action star team-ups just yet and he didn't hold back: "I just didn't like some of the people involved... Life is too short to work with funny people... There's good and bad people everywhere and a...

View from the Bottom Shelf – Six Unheralded Straight to Video Martial Arts Masterpieces
Reading Chris Holt’s recent excellent feature on the death of the local video store, (as well as this week’s release of Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2) I got to thinking about my own experiences of traipsing along to my local video store in search of something obscure but exciting. During my mid to late teens it was all about straight to video martial arts films – my Dad had introduced me to Bruce Lee by way of The Big Boss and I had worked my way through a whole load of Jackie Chan, Seagal and Jcvd, before resorting to just picking up a video that looked like it contained a lot of fighting and seeing what it offered.

Needless to say, a lot of what I stumbled on was deeply, abidingly terrible. Lone Wolf McQuaid was pretty good, but Code of Silence was abysmal. Delta Force II and III were both excellent fun,...

Steven Seagal May Run for Governor of Arizona
Move over, Governator, here comes the … Aikidonator? Hey, if Arnold Schwarzenegger can get himself elected governor of California, why can’t Steven Seagal? The action movie star and Aikido master recently told a news outlet that he is, indeed, mulling over a run for the Governor’s seat of the great and very arid state of Arizona. The star of such badass flicks as “Marked for Death,” “Under Siege,” and “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory” recently told news station Knxv-tv about his possible plans: Joe Arpaio and I were talking about me running for governor in Arizona which was kind of a joke… But I suppose I would remotely consider it…but probably I would have a lot of other responsibilities that may be more important to address. Seagal goes on to discuss various political hot button topics, quotes Reagan, and takes a little jab or two at Obama. You...

Steven Seagal may run for Arizona governor
Star of Hard to Kill and Under Siege, 61, reveals he is considering going for political office

Action-movie star Steven Seagal says he is considering a run for Arizona governor. The actor, star of martial arts and action films including Marked for Death, Hard to Kill and Under Siege, told Knxv-tv that he is considering a shot at the state's highest office and has had a talk about the bid with the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America.

The 61-year-old made the comments while talking about his newly released reality series, Steven Seagal – Lawman: Maricopa County. Seagal teamed up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the show, which was shot in Arizona and airs on cable TV's Reelz Channel.

The martial arts expert is a member of Arpaio's posse, made up of 3,000 unpaid civilians. He also has been deputised with sheriff's offices in New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana and says he wants to increase border security.

True Blood Cast Teases Pam-Vs.-Eric Victor, Alcide Story Switch, 'Gamechanger' of a Finale

When last we left True Blood, Pam and Eric were engaged in a Newlin-approved vamp death match. Russia wants Steven Seagal to be the face of its similarly expanding weapons industry
Though an international investigation has failed to provide any clear evidence that an intelligence failure allowed the Boston Marathon bombings to happen, like so many corrupt cops, environmental polluters, and moviegoers before us, it seems everyone forgot about Steven Seagal. Just like the drug dealers in Marked For Death, these terrorists attacked his family (America), and they made the wrong guy very, very interested in diplomatic missions to Russia, where Seagal helped to “open up doors” for a delegation of U.S. lawmakers like Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher—much as he’d helped to open up doors for Arizona Sheriff ...

Steven Seagal Breaks Dozens of Bones in Less than 4 Minutes in an Epic Supercut
Steven Seagal does not hold back when it comes to on-screen martial-arts action, as has been demonstrated by his show True Justice and the wince-inducing beatdowns that it features every week. But it turns out that we weren't the only ones interested in documenting Seagal's epic bone-crunching moves, because the kids over at FilmDrunk put together a supercut that documents every time a low-life baddie's bone has been broken in a Seagal movie. The total number of broken bones is remarkable, and it definitely convinces us to stay on Steven's good side.

Q&A: Steven Seagal Talks 'The Expendables' With 'Maximum Conviction'
Steven Seagal is a man of many talents: International movie star, TV action hero, part-time law enforcer and full-time ass kicker. He even sings the blues and made the ponytail look manly.

In his newest action flick "Maximum Conviction" – coming to DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 6th – Seagal teams with "Stone Cold"' Steve Austin to battle a team of elite mercenaries after the transportation of two inmates goes awry. The movie is vintage Seagal, complete epic gun fights, explosions, witty puns and all the bone-crunching Aikido one can handle in 90 minutes.

Taking a pause from breaking necks and limbs, Steven took the time to sit down with us and discuss upcoming projects, his thoughts on "The Expendables" franchise (hint: he doesn't love it) and the odds that we'll ever refer to him as President Seagal.

"Maximum Conviction" is an action fans' dream. It's got shoot outs, twists, you are...

Live-Action Iron Fist Tournament Part Zero: "Tekken" Movie to Get Prequel From Ong Bak Director
Between showing off C. Thomas Howell's boy and his giant dog movie and dragging Jon Voight into a new trilogy of Baby Geniuses movies at Cannes, production company Crystal Sky announced that they were planning to prequelize 2010's live-action Tekken feature. Crystal Sky is hoping for a domestic theatrical release for the movie when it's completed.

The prequel, whose current title is Tekken: Rise of the Tournament, will be directed by prolific Thai director Prachya Pinkaew (Ong Bak). In lieu of high-profile talent, Pinkaew plans to bring on board actors and actresses who look like their in-game counterparts. No further details are available about the story as of this writing.

The first film directed by Dwight H. Little (Rapid Fire, Marked For Death) starred Jon Foo as Jin Kazama and was set in the year 2039 where the evil Mishima Corporation would throw the Iron Fist tournament to find the world's greatest fighter.

Book Review: ‘Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal’
Chicago – Vern started his career as one of those snarky critics who wrote in to Harry Knowles’ landmark and influential movie website Ain’t It Cool News. He became a regular writer for the site and his work there turned him into a very unorthodox author. His first book was a fantastic examination of, believe it or not, the career of Steven Seagal. Newly updated with a dozen new chapters about the recent adventures of his subject matter (the first printing was in 2008), “Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal” is a funny, clever read for fans of the unusual action star and those who have never seen one of his movies. Vern’s movie-loving, smart, enjoyable writing makes this a more entertaining experience than Seagal himself has ever produced.

Don’t worry. This is not tongue-in-cheek nonsense. To say that Vern takes his subject matter seriously would be a Massive understatement.

"American Horror Story" 1.02 Recap: "Is Everybody Crazy?"
That's right, folks - I hope you haven't taken your daily potassium supplement yet because American Horror Story is back with more Bananas. In the second episode of FX's aggressively kooky horror show the action was a bit more focused (instead of 10 storylines we only had about 7) but it was no less intense than the Certified Batsh*t premiere. Plus, this week they added a new ingredient to the mix: Axe murder!

Yes, Ep 2 decided to do a little redecorating by splashing buckets of blood on the wainscoted walls of the Harmon House. Grab your paint chips and let's see if we can match it!

As with the premiere, we begin with a flashback - this time to 1968. I'm already loving the idea that we could bounce around to any time period and see what the house was up to - the possibilities are endless, really. It's like If These Walls Could Talk,...

Why Jason Statham can’t break out of the B-movie action genre
HollywoodNews.com: For all intents and purposes, Jason Statham has been an action star since 2002, when Fox released the Luc Besson-produced The Transporter. Yes, more hardened film fans knew him from his Guy Ritchie work and from his supporting role in The One (a Jet Li vehicle from late 2001, the first of three times he would spar with Jet Li onscreen).

But for general moviegoers and action junkies, Statham was introduced as Frank Martin eleven years ago as of October 11th. In that time, Statham has arguably become the king of an all-but vanished genre. He is basically the last action hero, the lone movie star known primarily for kicking ass in a non-fantasy and non-period setting. But nine years is a long time to toil in the underbelly of grind house B-movie cinema. He’s had the occasional high-end picture (The Bank Job), supporting roles in A-level studio...
