Not only did it double its reported budget through its gross earnings, but it received a high average audience score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, creating a huge gap compared to the critics. Michael Mann, Rob Reiner, Kathy Bates, Aaron Sorkin, Keir Dullea, Sean Young, Barry Bostwick and Eric Braedon are headed to the 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival this month.

Reiner will chat with Kathy Bates and Aaron Sorkin before screenings of his dramas Misery (1990) and The American President (1995), and for the closing night film, Michael Mann will be on hand for a presentation of his action-packed Heat (1995), whose memorable performances include one from the late Val Kilmer.

The festival takes place April 24-27 in Hollywood.

Other presenters announced Thursday to talk about the making of their films include Dullea for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Bostwick for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Young for Blade Runner (1982).

Danny Huston will introduce Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) — a film directed by his father, John Huston — Alexander Payne will get the audience pumped for Ben-Hur (1959), and Paul Schrader will set up Hud (1963).

The 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival has announced its closing night selection, Michael Mann’s “Heat,” which marks its 30th anniversary this year. Back in 1984, Troma Entertainment brought the world The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), a film about “the first superhero from New Jersey.” That film spawned a franchise, leading to The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), a stage musical, and an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. For a long time, we’ve been hearing that Troma wanted to make a Toxic Avenger 5 – but instead doing that, they have loaned out the rights to Legendary Pictures, allowing them to make a remake of the original film that’s set to reach theatres on August 29th, courtesy of Cineverse. BleedingCool was the first website to spread word of this potential adaptation. According to a rumor picked up from this year's London Book Fair, fan-favorite writer Magdalene Visaggio, has been tapped by Dark Horse Comics to write Rocky Horror Show #1 this October, in celebration of the musical's 50th anniversary.

Of course, there's no official word just yet as October's a long ways away. But this wouldn't be Visaggio's first brush writing Rocky Horror, as she'd previously contributed to the book of essays Absolute Pleasure: Queer Reflections on Five Messy Decades of Rocky Horror.

However, in the silly but lovable “She’s the He,” debuting feature director Siobhan McCarthy — and their heavily trans and nonbinary cast and crew — find the farce through a twist: one of the “boys” discovers she really is transgender. The result is a meaningful comedy-drama about identity, and the confusion of burgeoning youth.

Half the fun of “She’s the He” lies in its Russian-nesting-doll logistics: It’s a film in which trans and non-binary actors play ostensibly cisgender characters pretending to be trans. Not only does this subvert the Hollywood norm of having cisgender men play trans women (and sometimes receiving Oscar attention for it!), it also adds a playful fluidity to the film’s purview of queerness, as though...

One can indeed watch each installment in Sam Raimi's celebrated "Evil Dead" franchise in the order of their release, but it might not help keep the continuity clear. The actual narrative throughline of the "Evil Dead" movies is a little hazy throughout, and each new movie might serve as a soft reboot of the one that came before it. The ending of one movie doesn't clearly link to the next, and the main character of Ash (Bruce Campbell) doesn't seem to learn or grow from his experiences. Indeed, Ash only appears to get dumber and more selfish with every outing. The already-weak continuity then becomes especially messy when one starts factoring in director's edits and alternate endings that only sort of count toward the franchise's central canon. At its core, cult phenomenon “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a movie about conservative values versus transgression. The audience surrogates, Brad (asshole!) and Janet (slut!), are two naïve virgins and the living embodiment of the word “stuffy” who are thrown into a world of mad scientist transvestites, hunky Frankensteins, and alien butlers and maids. Sure, the kinky, queer world the two squares fall into is dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun, and “Rocky Horror” makes it clear that it’s also liberating for the young virgins to escape their conservative world, don some fishnet tights, and embrace their inner freak.

“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a documentary that loudly, and proudly, celebrates the freaks and the misfits who have found solace in the rock ‘n roll musical film since its 1975 premiere. And yet, it fits more in the “square” category than it should.

In our age of instant nostalgia, a big question for any documentarian or oral historian is how soon to take a look back at a beloved property.

Do it too soon and you’ll have more participants available, but with so little distance or reflection that you might as well be making a promotional Epk.

A revival of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and of Oedipus, starring Mark Strong and Lesley Manville, will be part of Roundabout Theater Company’s 2025-2026 Broadway season.

Created and directed by Robert Icke, Oedipus comes to Broadway after a West End run, also starring Strong and Manville, which has been nominated for four Olivier Awards and was the highest-growing limited run in the Wyndham Theatre’s history. Now in its 63rd year of existence, the James Bond franchise has experienced its share of turbulence, but though it all has managed to adapt its formula to the ever-changing times without losing its old-school sense of fun. Even when an individual film fails to deliver the goods, fans are still guaranteed the globetrotting exhilaration — be it gripping or goofy — of several major action set pieces jam-packed with practical stunt work. At this point, saying Mark Hamill is the definitive Joker is as redundant as saying Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman. While every Bat-fan has their favorite performance of both character, Hamill and Conroy have enjoyed such enduring appeal as the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight, respectively, that since playing the roles in "Batman: The Animated Series" they have returned to the characters in everything from video games to animated movies and even live-action TV appearances.

But the original Fox Kids series is where an entire generation of '90s kids witnessed Conroy and Hamill's performances for the first time. Prior to its 1992 debut, there had never really been anything quite like the now-beloved animated series. Co-creators Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, along with a team of indispensable contributors that included writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, crafted a show that appealed to kids without talking down to them.

It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")

Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.

Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

There’s an ongoing debate about whether or not so-called “cult classics” can exist in the streaming era. In a world where nearly every film ever made is available to watch at the click of a button, and where niche online communities can unite fans of even the most obscure international releases, how can we say that an easily accessible modern feature is part of the same underground movement as something like The Rocky Horror Picture Show when it’s just as easily viewed as the latest Avengers flick?

However, what many critics fail to realize is that this overwhelming availability of niche films is also responsible for burying potential hits underneath an ever-growing sea of similar releases. Candy Canes, falling snow, and endless carnage? In Anna and the Apocalypse, a little-known 2017 British Christmas movie directed by John McPhail, all of this is accompanied by some festive song-and-dance and a ton of zombies. Anna and the Apocalypse primarily follows a teen named (you guessed it) Anna as she fights to survive high school and an eventual zombie apocalypse. The cult classic combines a signature British dark humor with catchy tunesby Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly, including several Christmas tunes, such as the opening number, "Christmas Means Nothing Without You."

Written by Alan McDonald and Ryan McHenry, it is based on McHenry's college short film, Zombie Musical. McHenry was notably inspired by High School Musical, as well as films like Night of the Living Dead and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. From hilarious camp to excessive violence, Anna and the Apocalypse has something for everyone from horror to Broadway fans.

Tim Curry's new horror movie, titled Stream, marks his big screen return after 14 years. The English actor rose to relevancy with his role as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, reprising a role he originated in the musical stage production. Curry has appeared in many movies over the years, the last of which was Burke & Hare in 2010, before suffering a major stroke in 2012 and being confined to a wheelchair, and has since shifted mostly to voice acting.

Now, 14 years after his last feature film role, the seasoned actor is returning to the big screen. Scarlett Johansson’s spider-infested horror movie Eight Legged Freaks was met with negative reviews on its initial release in 2002, but it remains an underrated gem. These days, Johansson is known for starring in giant blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Oscar-winning dramas like Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. But early in her career, she appeared in a wider range of projects — and that includes some of Johansson’s best movies. She appeared in critical darlings like Lost in Translation and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but she also starred in her share of B-movies.

Johansson co-starred with Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay’s sci-fi thriller The Island, she played Alex Pruitt’s older sister in Home Alone 3, and she played the sheriff’s daughter in Ellory Elkayem’s horror comedy Eight Legged Freaks. This movie sees a swarm of spiders getting exposed to mutagenic toxic waste, growing to kaiju size, and attacking a small mining town.

The history of cinema is filled with films that were under-appreciated at the time that they were released, but then subsequently found an audience and the adoration that comes with it. These cult classics include Donnie Darko, the Jake Gyllenhaal psychological thriller, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the rip-roaring hallucinogenic road movie starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which Roger Ebert called a "social phenomenon" more than a movie. Another such film that can be entered into the cult canon is Vanishing Point, the seminal road movie from 1971 that has that almost mystical quality to it that exists in the greatest cult films.

Hill House in The Haunting of Hill House is undeniably a main character in the original book and subsequent adaptations. Rarer than this, a specific location in the real world will become so highly sought after in film, that it becomes as recognizable as any A-list actor. In Jim Sharmans cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Frank N. Furters bizarre castle is both essential to the story, and a famous filming location. The castle is Oakley Court, built in 1859 by Sir Richard Hall Say in Berkshire, England. Though in modern day, Oakley Court is best remembered for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, over 200 movies were filmed on location there, many of which were Hammer Horrors. Oakley Court had a long and storied cinematic history long before Sharman.

Colin Chilvers, a pioneering, Oscar-winning Hollywood visual effects artist who created movie magic for Superman, apocalyptic scenarios and even The Who’s Tommy, died November 19 in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he lived. He was 79.

His death was first reported Wednesday by the news station 101.1 FM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Among Chilvers’ more memorable feats were the effects that gave Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder the illusion of flying in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman, work that had him share in a team Oscar for Visual Effects.

In 1986, Chilvers created the dazzling trickery that allowed Michael Jackson to defy gravity by leaning forward 45 degrees with no visible means of support in the music video for “Smooth Criminal.” Chilvers directed the video, along with various other Jackson video collections.

Chilvers’ post-Superman credits from the ’80s through the 2000s also included Superman 2 and Superman 3, Bride of Chucky, X-Men and K-19: The Widowmaker.

Exclusive: Ryan McCartan, the former Liv & Maddie actor who transitioned to Broadway in Heathers the Musical and Wicked, will take over the role of Jay Gatsby in the Broadway hit musical The Great Gatsby, succeeding Jeremy Jordan after the start of the new year.

McCartan will play his first performance as the F. Scott Fitzgerald protagonist on January 21, 2025. No official word on Jordan’s plans, but Deadline hears the actor will have some rather mammoth casting news of his own coming later this week.

Success in the movie business is all about relativity. Comic book movies have been all the rage for more than two decades because they can make a lot of money, but those movies and similar franchise blockbusters are also tremendously expensive to make, often costing $200 million or more in the modern era. Relatively few movies rise to the level of mass appeal to justify such an investment. For everything else, it comes down to making the right movie for the right price given its intended audience.

Friday, November 1 of this year was Rocky’s first birthday. Kris Jenner, his adoring grandmother, shared an Instagram post to honor her grandson.
