This Cosmic Horror Is the Perfect Cheap Thrill for Lovecraft Fans
Image
Based on a Nick Cutter short story, Rodrigo Gudios adaptation of The Breach is a cosmic twist on the classic cabin-in-the-woods horror story. Allan Hawco as John Hawkins investigates when a mangled body washes up one day, boneless and skinless. The case goes from strange to bizarre as Hawkins treks into the wilderness with the coroner, Jacob (Wesley French), and tour guide, Meg (Emily Alatalo). Once the trio discovers the cabin of Dr. Parson, all bets are off as the film spirals out of graphic police procedural and into cosmic body horror. At times, The Breach is overburdened by too many ideas, attempting to blend a police thriller with old-school sci-fi, zombie gore, and classic Lovecraftian terror. As perhaps an unintentional remedy, The Breach maintains a break-neck speed to keep the audience rapt, regardless of how muddled the plotlines can become. The Breach is at its strongest when leaning into...

10 Most Important Darkseid Moments That Defined DC History & Lore
Image
Darkseid's debut in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 establishes him as an intimidating presence and top-tier villain. The introduction of the Anti-Life Equation in Forever People #5 drives Darkseid's motivations and desires throughout his existence. Darkseid's tragic love story with Suli shapes his cold heart and fuels his anger, hate, and bitterness.

As one of the most formidable opponents for any hero in the DC Universe, Darkseid's impact over the course of its history is undeniable. Darkseid first made his debut back in 1970 as one of Jack Kirby's key creations. More than 50 years later, the king of Apokolips continues to endure the test of time as one of DC's most dangerous antagonists. From the moment he first appeared on-panel (more on that later), there were teases for big plans on the horizon for the character. Since then, he's been portrayed as the Big Bad of the DC Universe, practically the...

1 Five Nights At Freddy's Character Fate Is The Key To Making A Great Spinoff
Image
The success of Five Nights at Freddy's guarantees more movies with Freddy Fazbear, but a sequel is dependent on a character's fate. A spinoff set in a mall with a new character named Vanessa as the security guard would elevate the franchise. Vanessa's awakening from a coma is crucial for the spinoff to happen and she will likely be involved in future chapters of the franchise.

The many box office records broken by Five Nights at Freddy's have all but guaranteed that more movies starring Freddy Fazbear and his diabolical pals are on the way, but one of the best potential avenues for a spinoff is dependent on the fate of a character from the original film. A sequel has not yet been greenlit, but the amount of lore that is available to explore from the video game source material means that there is potential for more stories set in that universe.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in Nasce Uma Estrela (2018)
What’s New on HBO and Max in June 2023
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in Nasce Uma Estrela (2018)
Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.

To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).

“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

As for TV series, “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson’s “The Idol,” starring Abel...

HBO and Max New Releases: June 2023
Image
HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.

Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

The BottleRock gig marked Dogstar’s first show since Oct. 2002, the same year they broke up. However, after 20 years of dormancy, in July...

Gb News Summoned To Ofcom Meeting Following Second Covid-Related Code Breach In Two Months
Image
Gb News has been summoned for a meeting with Ofcom after being found in breach of its Broadcasting Code for the second time in the space of two months, both pertaining to Covid-19 vaccine comments on Mark Steyn’s former show. The right-leaning news network has, however, escaped a fine.

Ofcom has this morning sanctioned the right-leaning UK news network for an episode last October during which a guest, Dr Naomi Wolf, said the Covid-19 vaccine rollout amounted to “mass murder” and was comparable to the actions of “doctors in pre-Nazi Germany.”

Following more than 400 complaints to the regulator, Ofcom found Gb News to be in breach of the section of its code that states: “Generally accepted standards must be applied to the contents of television and radio services…so as to provide adequate protection for members of the public from the inclusion in such services of harmful and/or offensive material.

Lewis Capaldi says having a six-pack sounds ‘boring and time-consuming’
Image
Lewis Capaldi has opened up about his attitude towards his appearance in a recent interview with The Independent.

The Scottish singer-songwriter, 26, was involved in a number of candid conversations about his health and self-image in his new Netflix documentary, How I’m Feeling Now.

Viewers and fans have praised Capaldi for his honesty about his personal struggles with issues such as anxiety. The “Before You Go” vocalist has Tourettes, which can result in tics – sudden and involuntary twitches, movements, or repeated sounds, and also suffers from panic attacks.

In a new interview with The Independent, Capaldi spoke out about his image being a topic of public scrutiny and described how people “feel an affinity” with the way he looks.

“I exist as I am,” Capaldi said in the conversation, published on Saturday (15 April).

“Don’t get me wrong, I am a bit heavier than I would like to be right now.

Netflix is removing all of these movies tomorrow

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.

The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.

Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.

We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

The 5 Biggest Mysteries Fnaf Hasn't Solved Yet
Image
Five Nights At Freddy's is a horror game with straightforward gameplay, but the same can't be said about its lore. Between the games and several books that have been written with the help of developer Scott Cawthon, there's a lot of information to sift through to piece together this franchise's story. However, this wealth of content leaves plenty of mysteries that have yet to be solved, and a few of them may never truly be answered.

Five Nights At Freddy's details the secrets and mysteries of Fazbear Entertainment, Incorporated. The games reveal a deeper story that begins with a man named William Afton who was a co-owner of the corporation but would go on to kill dozens of children. While the Five Nights At Freddy's terrifying animatronics get the most attention when it comes to scares, the real terror might be hidden in the unsolved mysteries in the games' stories.

Fantasia 2022: ‘The Breach’ Review
Image
Stars: Allan Hawco, Emily Alatalo, Adam Kenneth Wilson, Wesley French, Natalie Brown, Mary Antonini, Alex Lifeson | Written by Nick Cutter, Ian Weir | Directed by Rodrigo Gudiño

Making its world premiere at Fantasia, The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.

John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave.

And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of...

Rashaad Ernesto Green to Direct ’68,’ About Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos
Image
Rashaad Ernesto Green will direct “’68,” a biopic about the careers and lives of Olympic runners and activists Tommie Smith and John Carlos for MGM, Participant and MacRo.

MGM announced news of the project Thursday, which tells the story of Smith and Carlos from their first meeting on the track team at San Jose State to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. As the two received medals for the 200 meter race, they raised their fists in salute and silent protest during the American national anthem. The event caused widespread controversy at the time, and is still regarded as one of the most political moments in the history of the Olympics.

“Still incredibly powerful and relevant, I’m honored for the opportunity to bring Tommie and John’s riveting story to life; to portray the weight of the world these two giants had on their shoulders and the self-determination, courage and sacrifice...

Rashaad Ernesto Green Set To Direct Olympians Feature ‘’68’ For MGM, Participant & Macro
Image
Premature filmmaker Rashaad Ernesto Green is set to helm Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Participant and MacRo’s feature movie ’68 inspired by the true story of Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos. The track athletes from San Jose State rose to become Olympic medalists and activists at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. That’s where they both raised their fists in solidarity and in support of human rights.

The screenplay is by Oscar nominated scribe Billy Ray. Participant and MacRo will produce the project, along with Stacy Sherman.

Participant will be incorporating ’68 into its ongoing impact work dedicated to civil rights and social justice. Carlos’ nephews, Airrion and Shaun McCoy, and DeLois Smith, the wife of Tommie Smith, are co-producing.

Bronx-born filmmaker Green received the Independent Spirit Someone to Watch Award in 2020 for his second feature directorial, Premature, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. Shot in Harlem, New York entirely on 16mm film,...

Rashaad Ernesto Green to Direct ’68’ About U.S. Olympians Who Gave Black Power Salute on Podium
Rashaad Ernesto Green, Director of GUN HILL ROAD
Rashaad Ernesto Green will direct the feature film “68,” inspired by the true story of the Olympians who gave the black power salute on the podium, MGM, Participant and MacRo announced on Thursday.

“Still incredibly powerful and relevant, I’m honored for the opportunity to bring Tommie and John’s riveting story to life; to portray the weight of the world these two giants had on their shoulders and the self-determination, courage and sacrifice it took for them to stand up for all of us,” Green said in a statement.

Keith Redmon Sues Anonymous Content for ‘Breach of Contract,’ Denies Sexual Misconduct Claims
Leonardo DiCaprio in O Regresso (2015)
Keith Redmon, the Oscar-nominated producer behind “The Revenant” who was ousted from Anonymous Content in 2021, is suing the entertainment company for “breach of contract,” alleging that it engaged in a “public smear campaign” by citing false sexual misconduct accusations as reason for his termination.

The suit, filed Tuesday in Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles County, outlines that Redmon was made a “target” following executive leadership changes at the company in 2019, when founder Steve Golin died and Anonymous acquired a majority stake in the Laurene Powell Jobs-founded LLC Emerson Collective. According to Redmon, more than 70 Golin-era executives were discharged or replaced following his death. The suit also alleges that some employees quit to “escape” new leadership’s “mismanagement” and “abusive behavior.”

“With Anonymous’ new top-up focus on profits and credits, a deterioration of its creative standards and a mass exodus of talent from the Company soon followed,” the documents read.

TV’s Most Stressful Episodes From Battlestar Galactica to The Handmaid’s Tale
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica, Chernobyl, Line of Duty, Ozark, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Knick, Lovecraft Country and Succession.

Considering that most of us watch TV to relax, it’s remarkable how many shows leave us adrenalin-flooded, with hearts beating like hummingbird wings. It’s TV characters’ fault; those guys never know when to stop. They’re always attempting a hostile takeover of the family firm, escaping a race of murderous cyborgs or trying to dismantle a totalitarian regime. It’s exhilarating but exhausting behaviour. And the better a drama is, the more invested we are in its characters, so the more we care when they put their life on the line. That means more fingernails chewed, more faces clawed in horror, and more nervous foot-tapping while we should, by rights, be melted into our sofas like… all the chocolate melted into my sofa.

Forget slow TV, canal boat travelogues and laundry-folding background series,...

Film Mode launches consultancy on fifth anniversary
Image
Sales slate includes on As Sick As They Made Us, Dig.

Clay Epstein’s Los Angeles-based sales agency Film Mode Entertainment (Fme), in talks with buyers at the virtual Cannes market on As Sick As They Made Us and Dig, has set up a consultancy business.

Fme Consulting will help filmmakers navigate all stages of the filmmaking process from development to financing, production, and distribution.

The division will run separately from the sales business, so Film Mode will not necessarily handle sales on films from consultancy clients unless it suits both parties. Similarly sales clents will only access consultancy services if they request it.

Bruce Willis & John Travolta To Reteam For First Time Since ‘Pulp Fiction’ In ‘Paradise City’; Praya Lundberg Also Stars
Image
Exclusive: We have learned that Bruce Willis and John Travolta are starring together again for the first time in 27 years in the Chuck Russell-directed action pic Paradise City. Production starts this Monday in Maui, Hawaii.

Willis plays renegade bounty hunter, Ryan Swan, who must carve his way through the Hawaiian crime world to wreak vengeance on the kingpin, played by Travolta, who murdered his father. I’m told the project is billed as being similar to Miami Vice but with bounty hunters instead of cops. Thai actress and model Praya Lundberg has landed the lead female role.

Though Paradise City technically reps the fourth time that Willis and Travolta are billed on a movie together, they only worked onscreen in the 1994 Oscar-winning $214M-grossing Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction respectively as boxer Butch Coolidge and mob guy Vincent Vega. Check out their scene below from that pic. Prior to that...

Despite the fact that his career is a fairly young one, Andrew Horton is being faced with dramatic challenges on Jupiter’s Legacy, not the least of which stems from the fact that his character, Brandon Sampson (aka Paragon) is the son of the world’s greatest heroes, the Utopian (Josh Duhamel) and Lady Liberty (Lesie Bibb). The good news is that he’s had no problem rising to the meta-human challenge.

Besides starring in the short films Ladies First and Breach, Horton made a guest appearance on the TV series Doctors and in the films It Came from the Desert and How to Talk to Girls at Parties. As he reveals in the following chat, he’s fully embracing the opportunity that Brandon and Jupiter’s Legacy is giving him.

2021 Razzie Awards Winners Include Sia's Music, the My Pillow Guy and Rudy Giuliani
Image
Sia and Rudy Giuliani lead the 2021 Razzie Award winners. With the Academy Awards taking place tomorrow and celebrating the best of the best in Hollywood, the Razzies had to reveal their picks for the worst in entertainment the day before. Unlike the Academy Awards, which are taking place in person this year, the Razzies took another year off, due to the pandemic. If all goes well, the annual event will be back in action next year with a live audience cheering on the worst of 2021.

Singer/songwriter Sia's Music led the pack with three 2021 Razzie Awards wins. The Worst Actress award went to Kate Hudson, Supporting Actress Maddie Ziegler, while the Worst Director honors went to Sia. The movie had good intentions, but was criticized for its portrayal of autism and for casting neurotypical actress Maddie Ziegler as a nonverbal girl on the autism spectrum. While many believed that Music...

Razzie Awards winners: Sia’s ‘Music,’ Mike Lindell’s ‘Absolute Proof,’ Rudy Giuliani (twice) …
Image
As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced its winners on the eve of the Oscars. The Razzies, now in their 41st year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of winners (and nominees) in all nine Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.

Leading the 2021 Razzie Awards winners list is “Music,” Sia‘s ill-conceived film about the relationship between an autistic girl (Maddie Ziegler) and her newly sober half-sister (Kate Hudson). Sia won Worst Director while Ziegler, who is not autistic, and Hudson were singled out for acting dishonors.

“Music,” which was filmed in 2017, had been a surprise contender at the Golden Globes, earning bids for Best Musical/Comedy and for leading lady Hudson. Among those that Ziegler faced off against was Glenn Close for “Hillbilly Elegy,” who is also in contention at Sunday’s Oscars.

2021 Razzie predictions in all 9 categories: ‘Music’ will win Worst Picture, while ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ and ‘Borat’ could make history
Image
Gold Derby users are predicting the “winners” in all nine categories at the 2021 Razzie Awards, which go to the worst achievements in film and will be announced on Saturday, April 24, the day before the Oscars celebrate the industry’s best (though this year there’s some overlap). So who will win? Scroll down for our official racetrack odds, with our projected winners highlighted in gold.

It looks like bad news for “Music,” which is the front-runner to win Worst Picture, Worst Director (Sia), Worst Actress (Kate Hudson), and Worst Supporting Actress (Maddie Ziegler). The film was criticized early on when singer-songwriter Sia cast Ziegler in the title role as an autistic girl instead of an autistic actor. It found itself back in the media’s crosshairs after the Golden Globes surprisingly nominated it for Best Film Comedy/Musical and Best Actress (Hudson). Then reviewers panned the film for depicting autism in harmful,...

‘Nobody’ Does It Better as Universal Scores Another PVOD Success
Image
Score another dual-platform hit for Universal. “Nobody,” the revenge thriller starring Bob Odenkirk in the mode of Keanu Reeves in “John Wick.” With two top spots on PVOD charts, it also took second place at the theatrical box office in its fourth weekend, with a drop of only six percent.

The $19.99 rental title added home viewing while still at 2,405 theaters. Even with just three days’ availability, it scored #1 spots Apple (by rentals) and FandangoNow (by revenue)..

A strategy originally conceived to buttress Universal from uncertain theatrical response, it’s become a hit for consumers at home while maintaining box-office interest. Four months into 2021, three studio titles from last year — “The Croods: A New Age,” Focus Features’ “Promising Young Woman,” and “News of the World” continue to ride high on VOD. No revenue totals have been released, but their sustained performances suggest each saw revenues in the tens of millions — and...

Razzie Awards nominations ‘honoring’ worst movies of the year led by ‘Dolittle,’ ‘365 Days,’ ‘Fantasy Island,’ ‘Music’ …

Leading the 2021 Razzie Awards nominations roster are two remakes: “Dolittle” and “365 Days.” Each of these ill-conceived movies reaped six bids, including Worst Picture. Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Dolittle’ and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell Land 2021 Razzie Nominations
Robert Downey Jr. at an event for O Juiz (2014)
The Razzie Awards nominations for 2020 are here, recognizing the worst movies in a year that the Razzies acknowledge “sucked big time.” Robert Downey Jr. in “Dolittle” and Mike Lindell (aka the MyPillow guy) both landed Worst Actor nominations.

Downey Jr.’s “Dolittle” led all movies with six nominations, including Worst Picture. Lindell picked up a nod for his election conspiracy film “Absolute Proof,” which Oann aired — but only with a disclaimer that the details in the movie should be taken as opinions, not facts.

“Dolittle” was tied for the most nominations with the mafia film “365 Days,” which was also nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Michele Morrone) and Worst Actress (Anna-Maria Sieklucka).

Some other low lights of the Razzie nominations include perennial contender Adam Sandler, who was nominated for Worst Actor for “Hubie Halloween” and Worst Screen Combo for himself and “His Grating Simpleton Voice.”

Stars: Bruce Willis, Frank Grillo, Brandon Thomas Lee, Corey Large, C.J. Perry, Perrey Reeves, Lochlyn Munro, Costas Mandylor, Eva De Dominici, Adelaide Kane, Sarah May Sommers, Trevor Gretzky | Written by Edward Drake, Corey Large | Directed by Edward Drake

Bruce Willis goes sci-fi. Again. Yes, as if one sci-fi a year isn’t enough for Willis, he’s back in Cosmic Sin, playing disgraced soldier James Ford who’s “tasked” with leading a team of seven soldiers to help stop an alien invasion.

Set in 2524, Cosmic Sin sees a first contact meeting between a human colony and an alien race go disastrously, catastrophically, wrong – leading to the chance of an interstellar war between humans and aliens. Willis’ soldier Ford is asked by Frank Grillo’s General Ryle (Frank Grillo) to lead a precautionary pre-emptive strike on the aliens before they wipe out humankind for good.

Penned by Willis’ co-star Connor Large,...

‘Tenet,’ Now at $5.99, Strong Against PVOD Debut of Tom Hanks in ‘News of the World’
Image
Following a long theatrical run and a month at $19.99, “Tenet” is now thriving at $5.99 and holds the top spot at all three lists that rank by purchases. At FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue, it is #6, the highest among standard-price entries. Best of all for Warner Bros., its normal share of a VOD release is around 70 percent. That compares to the 63 percent it demanded from theaters.

“Tenet” held off two significant new PVOD entries from Universal and Focus, “News of the World” and “Promising Young Woman.” Paul Greengrass’ Tom Hanks western led Apple TV for three days and placed second to “Tenet” at Google Play over the weekend. This comes as Universal’s “The Croods: A New Age” continues its strong presence at $19.99. “News” is #1 at FandangoNow, with “Promising” at #3 on their PVOD-dominated list.

“American Skin,” the first film from Nate Parker after “The Birth of a Nation,” priced at $6.99, placed...

Bruce Willis Kicked Out Of Pharmacy After Refusing To Wear A Mask
Die Hard star Bruce Willis may have taken down the Gruber brothers, but it seems he’s met his match in a Rite Aid clerk. According to a report from Page Six, Willis was kicked out of a Los Angeles branch of the store after refusing to wear a mask while shopping. Compounding the situation is that he was pictured with a bandana around his neck, which would have sufficed as a mask and just makes him look like a giant baby about the whole thing.

All this comes against the background of Los Angeles descending into Covid-19 hell. LA County has reported over 12,000 deaths from the virus and there are tens of thousands of positive tests every day. With the city’s healthcare system at breaking point, things are looking grim. In one example of how serious it’s gotten, Disneyland is being turned into a large-scale vaccination center,...

A Reduced-Price ‘Tenet’ and PVOD Debut ‘Fatale’ Stand Out in Home Viewing
Image
“Tenet,” which topped Premium VOD charts at $19.99, is seeing a second round of success with its price reduced to $5.99. It took top spot at both Apple TV and Google Play (both of which rank by transactions), and as #4 on FandangoNow, which lists by total revenue paid. The thriller “Fatale” with Hilary Swank also saw strong results as a PVOD, three weeks after it opened in theaters. It took #2 at FandangoNow, and #4 at Apple TV as well as Google Play.

Three other titles placed on all four charts we follow. (The weekly Spectrum chart has delayed results and “Fatale” is too recent a release; it did not offer “Tenet” on PVOD.) The best overall showing comes from “The Croods: A New Age,” #1 at FandangoNow, and charting in the top five at both Apple and Google. “The War With Grandpa” and “Honest Thief,” both of which are available at standard price, placed...

With Liam Neeson and ‘The Croods: A New Age,’ Home Viewing Thrives
Image
High-priced titles dominated the charts on New Year’s week with “The Croods: The New Age” leading the way. Sharing the glory was Liam Neeson: “Honest Thief,” a former theatrical/PVOD title, now thrives at $4.99, while Neeson’s 2011 Warner Bros. thriller “Unknown” is currently #1 at Netflix.

The thriving home-viewing market also includes “Soul” (Disney+ only) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (also in theaters). Neither studio reported specific results, though Warners claims “WW84” viewings by “millions” of subscribers. What constitutes a “view” remains undefined.

What stands out is the public is spending money on multiple high-price offerings. FandangoNow, which ranks by money spent, has a record nine PVOD titles in the top 10. (Only “Honest Thief” is standard priced at #4.) AmazonTV and GooglePlay also place PVOD entries in four of their five top slots.

Apart from “Croods,” the leading premium hits are “Tenet,” “Greenland,” and “The War With Grandpa.” At $14.99, “Grandpa” is less expensive,...
