Back in the days when movies could still become huge box office successes because two of the stars looked funny while standing side-by-side on a poster, we got Ivan Reitman’s Twins starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. It’s still one of the most beloved comedies of the ‘80s, or at least once you look past all of that creepy eugenics stuff.
But Twins had a tough time getting the green light from a studio. Why? Because the director wanted to hire one of the biggest movie stars in the world, who wasn’t exactly known for being funny. Which is hard to even imagine in today's post-Jingle All the Way world.
In the most recent installment of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Schwarzenegger appeared alongside his son, The White Lotus star Patrick Schwarzenegger. And of course this arrangement led to an awkward moment in which the Total Recall...

May 16, Mt. Laurel, NJ: One of the most legendary creators in comics history meets one of its most celebrated characters, as Sonja Reborn slashes into stores and readers’ pull lists this August!
Reborn is a tale of survival which takes a hard look at what life in the Hyborian Age might actually be like for a modern woman who finds herself suddenly thrust into it! How might a single woman survive a land of mystical threats and monsters without caving into her fears, dying of infection, or losing the at-best conditional loyalty of her ragged band of male cutthroats? What might this woman really be like and how could she possibly survive?
Christopher Priest has been a boundary-smashing figure in comics for nearly five decades, both on and off the page. With works of his serving as the foundation for billions-grossing blockbusters, Dynamite has been fortunate to work with him...

"Since its founding in 1939 as Timely Comics, Marvel has published some of the most iconic series in American comic book history [...] For over 45 years, Fantagraphics has published the very best comics and graphic novels that the medium has to offer [...] Now these two publishing titans are teaming up for Lost Marvels, an ambitious series of hardcover releases featuring never-before collected comics by masters of the Silver Age, including Neal Adams, John Buscema, Howard Chaykin, Stan Lee, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor-Smith, and other masters of the Silver Age."
Fantagraphics, collaborating with Marvel Comics, will publish three hardcover volumes in the Lost Marvels series this year, with more to follow in the years to come. Every year, thousands of movies and television series are released onto "home entertainment," be it DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, or digital. These can be recently released movies, or restorations of older films and shows, and it's obviously hard to judge the best of them, considering everything is in play. Well, the Home Entertainment Media Play Awards give it their best shot each year, and the results of their 2025 awards are in. A technical achievement in film restoration, the Warner Archive Collection takes the top honor this year with a jaw-dropping 4K release of John Wayne and John Ford's Western masterpiece, The Searchers.
Warner Bros. Discovery cleaned up quite a bit, winning 12 awards in total; The Searchers' release won five of those alone, while Friends: The Complete Series and Dune: Part Two each earned two awards. Shout! For the first installment, let's look at one creator whose stories and artwork took my breath away from the first comic of his that I picked up (and he remains one of my favorite creatives currently working in comics today). That is none other than Sean Gordon Murphy.

Sean Gordon Murphy was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1980. At an early age he become enraptured with the world of comics and began drawing. While his love of comics and art made him secluded from the rest of his peers, that didn't stop him from continuing to pursue his passion, which led to Murphy going to Salem, New Hampshire...

When Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings hit theaters in 2001, it was as if overnight, the fantasy genre was birthed to audiences everywhere. Lord of the Rings has proven so influential to cinema that even 20 years later, fantasy films are still liberally borrowing from the acclaimed trilogy and original author J. R. R. Tolkien's worldbuilding.
Despite how much Lord of the Rings changed cinema, it by no means created fantasy. The genre had an expansive catalog in the '80s, which holds a few quality gems. From pulpy cult classics like Dragon Slayer to the iconic Conan the Barbarian, there are plenty of noteworthy fantasy movies to check out.

Ridley Scott’s Paul Mescal-starring sequel, now streaming, joins cinema’s legion of Roman empire love-ins, from Ben-Hur to Conan the Barbarian
If men, according to the internet, simply cannot stop thinking about the Roman empire, then Hollywood remains a largely male-brained enterprise. Storytelling trends come and go, but the Roman epic has been a recurring fixture of blockbuster cinema for more than a century. Twenty-five years ago, Ridley Scott’s beefy, lavishly appointed action film Gladiator marked a resurgence in the genre after some time off, winning a best picture Oscar and spawning a new wave of sweeping, grunting imitators.
Now, Gladiator II is among them. Scott’s surprisingly belated follow-up substitutes Paul Mescal’s brooding glower for Russell Crowe’s brawny roar, but otherwise follows the template of its predecessor in a way that renders it as much remake as sequel. Playing the son (thanks to some...

Was Jason Momoa’s Conan the Barbarian a chaotic mess? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
In a brutally honest chat with GQ, the Aquaman star straight-up called the movie “a big pile of s**t.” Yikes. Jason Momoa, cast as the iconic vengeful Cimmerian warrior, had all the ingredients for a hit – big budget, a legendary character, and his usual badass energy.
The plot: Conan hunting down the guys who killed his dad and bringing his girl back from the dead. Classic revenge story, no? Except, it flopped hard. With a $90M (Aud $127m) budget, it only brought in $63.5M.
The critics weren’t exactly throwing roses at it either. With a brutal 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it quickly became clear that the hype was not worth the delivery. Despite his best efforts, Jason Momoa couldn’t hide his disappointment. “I’ve been a part of a lot of things that really sucked,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger fans are going to want to subscribe to Peacock before the new year. Two of the actor's most popular movies are set to drop onto the streaming service in January: Predator and Conan the Barbarian.
Beginning Jan. 1, Schwarzenegger fans will be able to stream Predator and Conan the Barbarian on Peacock. Conan the Barbarian was Schwarzenegger's first leading role of the 1980s and one of his most memorable, with the actor playing the popular sword-and-sorcery warrior created by Robert E. Howard. The 1982 movie follows Conan as he seeks vengeance for the death of his parents at the hands of Thulsa Doom (The Lion King's James Earl Jones), the leader of a snake cult. Conan was a commercial success during its initial run, grossing over $70 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. A sequel, Conan the Destroyer, was released in 1984.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was, for a time, one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood. He still carries this reputation with him now at 77 years old, and many of his action flicks from the '80s and '90s have stood the test of time. Schwarzenegger's action hero tenure largely started with Conan the Barbarian in 1982, but it was 1984's The Terminator and his role as the T-800 that cemented him as a staple of the genre.
Movies from the '80s like Predator (1987) and The Running Man (1987) remain Scharzenegger action classics, as does 1990's Total Recall. The 90's saw the Austrian actor's domination of the action space continue with movies like Kindergarten Cop (1990), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Last Action Hero (1993) and True Lies (1994). There's one title from the '80s, however, that also lives on as not just a quintessential Schwarzenegger action movie, but as one that is emblematic of...

Not even Jason Momoa’s towering charisma could save this one! Fresh off Game of Thrones, the man who made Khal Drogo a household name took a swing at a $90M blockbuster that had all the ingredients for success—but ended up tasting like a burnt soufflé. The problem? Way too many chefs meddling in the cinematic kitchen.

What should’ve been a post-Westeros win turned into a hot mess of conflicting visions and underwhelming execution. Momoa, being the force of nature he is, still managed to shine, but the movie itself? Let’s just say it didn’t earn any Iron Throne-level glory. Sometimes even the fiercest warriors can’t conquer chaos—and this film proved exactly that.

Jason Momoa's portrayal of Conan the Barbarian in the 2011 3D movie was a double-edged sword. While the experience itself was personally fulfilling, the final product left a sour taste in his mouth. Despite his dedication to the role and the character's rich history, the film's critical and commercial reception was largely negative.
There are several contributing factors to the 2011 Conan reboot's failure which the new Titan Conan the Barbarian series can learn from, such as commercial priorities, the challenging shadow of Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic performance, and Jason Momoa's subsequent efforts to break free from typecasting.

It would have been laughable to think, back in the 1980s, that Marvel Comics would ever become a major player in the movie industry even with the rising popularity of DC Comics' movie properties Superman and Batman jumping to the Silver Screen in the '70s and '80s. Back then, Marvel Comics wasn't exactly a movie-making powerhouse, with their only licensing efforts by then being the black-and-white Captain America serials in 1944, then, four decades later, selling the Red Sonja comic for a 1985 film that spun off Conan the Barbarian.

During the 1980s and '90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger ascended to the top of the Hollywood action genre through iconic movies like Terminator, Conan the Barbarian and Total Recall. Famously, the Austrian-born Republican ran a successful bid for the governorship of California, obviously putting his acting career on hiatus. When he returned to the big screen, it was a return to form, re-entering the action genre including a fun Neo-Western.
Schwarzenegger served as governor of California between 2003 and 2011, with his acting career being put on hold following the disappointing release of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. After his two consecutive terms ended, the bodybuilding politician returned to Hollywood. While the actor took on co-starring roles in the first two Expendables movies, it wouldn't be until 2013 that he finally got top billing in a fairly underrated neo-Western action flick titled The Last Stand. Author Gail Simone polled her social media followers, asking who is stronger, Conan the Barbarian, or Batman and while the outcome might have been expected, it doesn't necessarily reflect the truth of how the two characters stack up. Readers declared Batman the stronger hero in Simone's social media poll, but that doesn't necessarily close the book on the long-standing Batman vs. Conan debate. Despite Batman's skills and dedication, some may question the outcome due to Conan's brutal savagery and innate fighting abilities; while Batman is known for his agility and tactics, Conan's lethal fighting style and willingness to kill give him the edge in a battle.
As two of the toughest heroes in comics, Conan the Barbarian and Batman have been compared and contrasted by generations of pop culture fans with the debate invariably coming down to which of the two is physically stronger. According to a social media poll...

After the alleged references indicating that Ghostface would be coming to Mortal Kombat 1, the same dataminer who discovered the sound files has found more indicating that not only is Ghostface planned for MK1, but also Conan the Barbarian and the T-1000!
Per IGN, Dataminer Interloko (who also posted a video showing their findings) has uncovered files in the game that detail six upcoming characters, five new announcers, and two new arenas. Alongside Cyrax, Sektor and Noob Saibot, evidence points to Ghostface, Conan and the T-1000 as guest fighters.
The addition of T-1000 actually falls in line with a leak last year where Reptile’s actor Andrew Morgado dropped news that Robert Patrick was recording lines for the T-1000.
Once again, the addition of Ghostface for Mortal Kombat 1 would fall in line with Ed Boon‘s tease last October. And Conan the Barbarian and T-1000 would follow the Terminator and Rambo...

Those who don’t follow professional wrestling may not appreciate just how tough and grueling it is. It isn’t enough to be on the road 200+ days a year, getting dropped on your head or your back every night, dealing with injuries, losing your spot on the roster, and worse. If you’ve seen films like The Iron Claw, The Wrestler, or the old Beyond the Mat documentary, you know that professional wrestling is grind like no other.
But the other aspect that goes underappreciated is how much wrestling relies on acting. If you have any hope of making it big, it isn’t enough to be able to do a tope suicida or Texas Cloverleaf on the way to a 5-star mat classic. You have to be able to act your role, day in and day out. Often, you have to act live, in front of an audience of thousands,...

Harley Quinn #36 features a back-up story, "Harley the Barbarian," where Harley envisions Poison Ivy as a goddess, hinting at Ivy's potential for godhood in the DC Universe. Poison Ivy's path to godhood has been hinted at before, and "Harley the Barbarian" beautifully depicts Ivy as a giant, shining deity. Poison Ivy's popularity has grown due to her romantic pairing with Harley Quinn, but more critically, because of how effectively DC has developed her character over the years.

Disney's John Carter is a 2012 adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books that infamously bombed and has not been revisited. Disney's John Carter has a cult reputation, and holds up well against more recent blockbusters. A reboot or new incarnation of John Carter is overdue, and could open steampunk science fiction up to a much bigger audience.
Failures are a part of movies, and there will always be films that never find an audience. But no film thus far in Hollywood history lost like John Carter, a 2012 adaptation of the seminal Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels that ranks as one of the biggest box office disasters of all time. It's doubly painful because the film itself is actually quite good, and does justice to Burroughs in a way that got missed amid its disastrous theatrical run. In the golden age of action movies, villains were more captivating and memorable than they are in modern franchises like the MCU and Fast and Furious. Iconic villains like the T-800 from The Terminator, Luther from The Warriors, and Clarence Boddicker from Robocop brought creativity, risk, and improvisation to action movie villains. Villains like Castor Troy from Face/Off, the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Agent Smith from The Matrix added depth and made those films unforgettable.
Some action movies achieved classic status thanks to their iconic villains. Colorful and enthralling antagonists are something of a lost art in mainstream action cinema. While many modern films still boast complex, layered villains who present a compelling counterpoint to the hero’s way of life, it’s become rare for an action film’s villain to strike a vivid, eccentric image that makes them the highlight of the movie.

Filmmaker and video essayist Patrick H. Willems has some thoughts about Zack Snyder (who will henceforth be known as our "himbo auteur"). He's proposed that the key to understanding the director is his love of John Boorman's 1981 medieval fantasy epic "Excalibur." Snyder has expressed his love of Boorman's film many times over the years, even incorporating it into his version of the Caped Crusader's origin story in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Snyder's ultimate goal as an artist, Willems reasons, is basically making his version of "Excalibur," a film Roger Ebert once described as "a record of the comings and goings of arbitrary, inconsistent, shadowy, figures who are not heroes but simply giants run amok."
The more you think about it, the sounder this argument becomes. It certainly explains Snyder's tendency to craft brutal, bombastic films that prioritize spectacle over coherent storytelling or political messaging. Indeed, given his love of mythic storytelling,...

The 1990s has a special place in Hollywood history for many fans, especially those who grew up with that era of cinema as their standard for good movies. However, the decade stands out for another reason: it embraced pulp stories. While many modern fans think of Marvel and DC superheroes when they picture comic book cinema, the 1990s followed a different path.
Though the decade did experiment with superhero movies like Batman, Blade and Spawn, it also looked to classic pulp magazines for a different type of story. The pulp industry got its name from the cheap, wood pulp paper on which it was printed. The adventures of heroes like The Phantom and Doc Savage came before even Superman, and their influences on the superhero genre are beyond doubt. Pulp has always been fertile ground for action, adventure, crime and even romance, serving as the counter-balance to classic noir cinema.

From the Terminator to Conan the Barbarian, Arnold Schwarzenegger has played some unbelievably strong characters in action movies, but some of his characters are stronger than others. The writer of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando explains how the star’s rivalry with Sylvester Stallone led to the action movie being changed. Coming off Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, Schwarzenegger had his first chance to star as a classic militaristic action hero in the 1985 movie Commando. In that very same year, Schwarzenegger’s chief action movie rival Stallone released his own gung-ho shoot-em-up in Rambo: First Blood Part II, the sequel to his 1982 hit First Blood.

Netflix's Arnold revisits the famous box-office feud between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone and reveals new details about their various battles. The 1980s gave rise to action movies that put a much greater emphasis on the physicality of their stars. In a sense, Stallone led the way thanks to First Blood and Rocky III, where he proudly displayed his oiled-up muscles while speaking as little as possible. The likes of Chuck Norris and Dolph Lundgren would follow a similar formula, but without any doubt, Stallone's biggest feud was with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
There were the kings of action cinema during the '80s and most of the '90s, with the pair starring in high-concept blockbusters featuring no end of explosions, one-liners and testosterone. 1982's Conan the Barbarian was a surprise hit for Universal Pictures, putting star Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map and launching a wave of swords-and-sorcery movies throughout the 1980s. Even more impressive, it's gone on to become a fantasy classic, with Schwarzenegger periodically lobbying director John Milius to make another sequel with him. The same can't be said for most of the swords-and-sorcery movies that followed it. The sub-genre was a shabby one, to begin with, with quality taking a sharp dip in the wake of Conan the Barbarian's success.
But the ultimate failure of the sub-genre lies less in the quality of the product than in the lessons Hollywood took from Conan. They proved not only wrong but utterly oblivious to the roiling changes in the industry. In the simplest terms, while Conan the Barbarian made money, the powers that be felt it didn't make enough money and altered subsequent efforts accordingly.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

"Let the games begin." Such is the title of a clip from the highly-anticipated "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," which is based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, "Dungeons & Dragons." "D&d" has been steadily gaining mainstream popularity over the last 50 years since its release, and it's about time that we got a riveting, live-action rendition of this particular fantasy adventure. "Honor Among Thieves" looks like a hell lot of fun, replete with a band of thieves who must make their way out of a dangerous area while battling "D&d" monsters, who display no mercy toward the players.
The clip already proves how some aspects of the tabletop game have been successfully translated onto the big screen. The primary threat in this segment, a displacer beast, is shown using its standard powers of bending light and creating illusions to trick players while being resistant to all ranged attacks.
