The Power Season 1 Ending Explained
Image
Warning! Spoilers for season 1 of The Power and The Power novel.

The Power is a complex tale of oppression and revolution, and the ending of season 1 explains how these elements interact. The series explores the development of “electric organ discharge”, or Eod, as young girls around the world develop the ability to channel electricity. The Power has an ensemble cast of characters, including Margot (Toni Collette), the mayor of Seattle; Jos (Auli’i Cravalho), Margot’s daughter; Roxy (Ria Zmitrowicz), the daughter of a British gangster with a very powerful Eod, Tunde (Toheeb Jimoh), a Nigerian journalist who covers many of the social changes due to Eod; Allie (Halle Bush), a girl who has exceptional finesse in using her Eod; and Tatiana Moskalev (Zrinka Cvitesic), the wife of the repressive Moldovan president.

After exploring the lives of its cast, the ending of The Power season 1 sets up several plot points for season 2. Firstly,...

Today, find out where you can watch the new young-adult sci-fi series The Power: what streaming service to catch each episode on and more.

Based on Naomi Alderman’s best-selling sci-fi novel of the same name, The Power addresses the question of power equality between men and women. The plot follows four different teenage girls as they discover their ability to shoot electricity from their hands, think Star Wars’ Emperor Palpatine mixed with X-Men’s Storm. We soon find out this power is not exclusive to the four teenage girls which the story follows, but every woman in the world is capable.

The phenomenon is a global one and the four stories are spread across different countries, from London to Nigeria. We see how the different situations the girls find themselves in produce different opinions toward their newly discovered powers. One character believes she is the next coming of...

The Power’s Biggest Book Cut Makes Episode 4 Way More Important
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power series and novel!

As an adaptation from a book, The Power has needed to make certain cuts to the original story, one of which makes episode 4 even more important. In adaptations that pull a story from one medium to another, cuts must always be made to translate the narrative from page to screen. Every detail from a novel cannot be concisely conveyed on-screen without creating a long, poorly-paced show. The Power is an example of this, as the series abandons a framing device that the book uses to help foreshadow the novel’s conclusion but does so to great effect.

The Power tells the story of how the world changes when women gain the ability to control lightning. In particular, The Power follows several main characters to depict this social shift, including mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez (Toni Collette) and her daughter Jos (Auli’I Cravalho), aspiring journalist...

The Power Avoids A Major Sci-Fi Setting Problem
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power episode 4.

While The Power could have fallen into a trap that plagues much of sci-fi, it managed to avoid a prime setting issue. Sci-fi, as a genre, is meant for exploring the unknown and pushing the boundaries of possibility stemming from singular questions such as what would happen if scientists could create new life or what would happen if aliens visited Earth. However, due to the genre’s origin and development, it can ironically be somewhat limited in perspective. How The Power avoids this issue is a fascinating example of how future sci-fi series can do the same to fully capitalize on their premises.

The Power tells the story of an alternate world where women develop the ability to discharge electricity from their bodies, causing major social upheaval. The show depicts this transition from the perspective of The Power's wide cast of characters, including...

Who Is the Voice of God in 'The Power'?
Image
The Power wouldn’t be the same without Adina Porter, and she doesn’t even appear on screen. She plays The Voice, a disembodied entity that speaks to Eve (Halle Bush), one of millions of teenage girls across the world who have developed the ability to shoot electricity out of their bodies. For other characters in Prime Video’s sci-fi epic, this new talent is a source of comedy, action, or political thrills. For Eve, it’s a pathway to revelation. Talking to The Voice, she begins to perceive herself as an instrument of God, and soon enough, she plants the seeds of a new religion. Porter’s performance helps make this journey tantalizing and potentially unsettling.

Toni Collette, Zrinka Cvitesic, Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, and Auli'i Cravalho in The Power (2023)
The Power Sneak Peek: Is it Chance or Divine Intervention?
Toni Collette, Zrinka Cvitesic, Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, and Auli'i Cravalho in The Power (2023)
Have you been watching Prime Video's The Power?

The series follows women around the world after they suddenly discover their ability to produce electricity from within their bodies.

That discovery opens up an endless array of discussions about women's place in society and the power struggle between the sexes.

TV Fanatic is offering an exclusive clip for The Power Season 1 Episode 4, "The Day of the Girls."

It's one of my favorite scenes of the season, in which Allie (Halle Bush) is trying to find her footing as a leader in the new era.

Allie is the only character with the new power who has experienced a voice in her ear, urging her to explore her newfound power and its capabilities.

The clip suggests that while Allie has never given her opinion on who or what the voice in her ear may be, she could view it as God, an extraordinary...

Toni Collette, Zrinka Cvitesic, Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, and Auli'i Cravalho in The Power (2023)
Interviews: Toni Collette, John Leguizamo and more talk about their epic series The Power
Toni Collette, Zrinka Cvitesic, Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, and Auli'i Cravalho in The Power (2023)
At first glance, The Power may seem like a superhero story crossed with The Handmaid’s Tale, but it is so much more than that. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, The Power is an epic story about not just women who are imbued with a mysterious new ability but also how the structure of control and hierarchy of our world shifts because of this change.

The Power posits what it would be like if teenage girls across the globe suddenly manifested the ability to harness electricity through their bodies. Some fear the power, while others embrace what it means for those subjugated because of their gender. In a global tale set in various countries, The Power shows us how fear changes the perspective of men, women, and those who identify with a different sex. Sometimes funny, often dramatic, and always shocking, The Power is a commentary on our...

Why The Power Needed To Begin The Show On Its Darkest Storyline
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power!

CW for abuse and harassment.

The Power begins with a surprisingly dark storyline after Margot Cleary-Lopez’s (Toni Collette) introduction because of how it pivots to Allie (Halle Bush). How a show chooses to frame its opening scenes is critical, because in the same way the first line of a book sets the mood and tone for the following novel, a show introduces what an audience can expect with its first scenes. The Power is particularly unique in that it had to select one of its ensemble cast to open the show with, making it all the more telling that the series elected to begin with Allie’s complex, but dark, beginning.

The Power tells the story of an alternate history where the present-day world changes due to a seismic socio-political shift. This shift occurs due to many women among The Power's cast of characters...

Why Everyone Who Can Control Lightning In The Power Gets That Mark
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power novel and series!

The Power has several layers of mystery surrounding its titular power, including why everyone who can control lightning has a strange mark. Despite being a sci-fi or speculative fiction series, The Power incorporates a lot of veracity and adapted science in its world. This helps ground the series and make the consequences of the electrical abilities within it more realistic, differentiating the show from other superhero stories where powers equate to superheroism. These layers and realistic elements make it all the more interesting to see how The Power foreshadows its abilities and what consequences derive from its arrival, as every aspect is shown to feed into worldbuilding or narrative elements.

The Power tells the story of the world moving into a new socio-political order due to the emergence of the ability to manipulate electricity. However, this ability only appears in women, so...

The Power Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power!

With The Power’s debut, Amazon Prime’s latest series portrays a varied cast of characters with complex dynamics. One of the most fascinating elements of The Power’s premise is its scope, with electrical abilities developing in many women across the world. To tell such a broad story means balancing the experiences of characters in a variety of cultures and social classes, and as such, the cast of The Power is a diverse one. However, this can be overwhelming to keep up with as the show begins with five main stories right away.

Overall, The Power portrays what happens when women begin to develop electrical powers across the world, leading to a massive power shift around the globe. Specifically, the show documents this shift from a variety of perspectives, including a politician and her daughter in the U.S., a gangster’s daughter in Britain,...

It’s later discovered that these young girls can also awaken the ability in adult women as well, forever changing power structures as many women fight against the patriarchal norms of society. As with the novel, we get to see how different women choose to use their newfound powers and how this event changes their lives, for better or worse.

With a cast full of familiar faces and talented newcomers, here are the actors bringing these complex characters to life in The Power.

The Power Review: Event TV That’s a Force to be Reckoned With
Image
This The Power review contains no spoilers.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely etc. etc., but not (yet) in Prime Video‘s excellent adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 best selling work of speculative fiction. The novel, developed with help from a mentorship with Margaret Atwood, imagines what would happen if teenage girls suddenly developed the ability to produce electrical charges through their fingers.

The series takes this premise, updates it slightly for a 2023 audience and creates a show that feels complex, nuanced, emotional, and, yes, electric. This is not a simplistic girls against boys diatribe. It’s not a diatribe at all, but a fascinating thought experiment translated into colorful, dynamic TV, with a banging sound track and an impressive ensemble cast.

With an all-female writers room, the show was developed by Alderman, Raelle Tucker and Sarah Quintrell, with Tucker as the showrunner. They’ve created a powerhouse.

The Power review: A thrilling allegory for how a patriarchal society makes girls feel insignificant
Image
In 2017, Naomi Alderman’s novel about teenage girls suddenly acquiring the ability to shoot electricity from their fingers arrived right on time. The defiance of women and girls was a constant part of the news cycle, from the Women’s March in Washington DC to the rise of the #MeToo movement. They were making noise about the ways that misogyny was impacting their lives, and holding perpetrators to account. Six years later, andThe Power has now been adapted into a big-budget thriller series for Prime Video. With a punchy script from an all-female writers’ room –including Sarah Quintrell, Raelle Tucker and Alderman herself – and characters who both inspire and feel accessible, the story is as timely as it has ever been.

“Every revolution begins with a spark,” an opening voiceover tells us. “We never dared to imagine it; a world that was built for us, where we wrote the rules.

“The Power”. Amazon Prime Series
Image
The Power is a new fantasy Prime Video series starring Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, Auli’i Cravalho, Toni Collette and John Leguizamo.

It is based on the novel written by Naomi Alderman.

The Power (2023-)

An “electrifying” series for more than one reason, and that is that these girls have the ability to electrify people at will. Quite the ability and one that serves as a reflection on gender and the abuse of power in this series that premieres on Prime Video on March 31.

Enjoy it.

Storyline

The world of The Power is our world, but with quite the twist of nature. Suddenly, teenage girls develop the power to electrocute people at will. Following remarkable characters from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, the Power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of power balance.

Prime Video’s Feminist Drama ‘The Power’ Sizzles but Never Quite Sparks: TV Review
Image
In an episode of “The Power,” Prime Video’s series adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s acclaimed speculative novel, Roxy (Ria Zmitrowicz) tries to walk into a nightclub without flashing the ID that would reveal she’s underage. The swole sentinel manning the door tries to turn her away until Roxy creates a tiny lightning bolt between her thumb and index finger. The bouncer immediately backs down, now aware of the mortal threat Roxy poses, but she isn’t finished toying with him. “I’m not going in ‘til he smiles at me,” she says, goading him until he approximates joy. “There…you look nice when you smile.”

The cleverly gender-flipped scene represents “The Power” at its best, and there are thrilling moments throughout the show that justify the reportedly intense bidding war for the rights to Alderman’s novel. The book, in which teenage girls across the globe discover their ability to wield electricity,...

‘The Power’ Review: Toni Collette and John Leguizamo in an Amazon Sci-Fi Thriller Full of Untapped Potential
Image
Amazon’s The Power does not want for ambition. Like the Naomi Alderman novel it’s based on, it’s set in a world transformed by a quirk of biology that suddenly gifts teenage girls the ability to generate electric jolts from their fingertips — and like the Alderman novel, it attempts a forest-and-the-trees approach to the premise. Its narrative encompasses half a dozen leads spread out over three or four continents, and includes plotlines as intimate as a teenage romance and as sweeping as national political movements.

But if the broadness of its scope is intriguing, the broadness of its storytelling sometimes comes as a disappointment. Particularly in the first half of the nine-episode season (of which critics screened the first eight hourlong chapters), The Power too often relies on archetypes over complex characterizations, and talking points over nuanced conversations — though by the final installments, it does manage to generate...

Review: The Power is a series I fully expect will rankle a vocal minority online who will complain about this being a series that castrates masculinity and promotes extreme points of view. Those people clearly need to watch this series for that very reason. The Power is a cautionary tale that has a global scale. Looking at the impact of a shift in the male-female dynamic offers a unique look at how we treat gender as a society and how it differs across the planet. Abiding by...

The Power Season 1 Review: A Shaky But Promising Start To An Exciting Series
Image
Imagine a world where teenage girls suddenly and without notice became the apex predators of the human race. Imagine that their new power lay dormant in older women, and younger girls would develop the same ability when they got older. Imagine a world where the patriarchy was on its final legs and the dawn of a new world was at women’s fingertips. This is the world of The Power, Prime Video's latest series. Through several intersecting stories, The Power follows the sudden impact of teenage girls developing a new organ that allows them to release electricity from their fingers. With the power to take lives or heal, these girls will change the world. There is no “if” here, as the structures that prop up the patriarchy will crumble; it is just a matter of when.

Image
This month, Amazon Prime will debut The Power, a new series based on the Naomi Alderman novel of the same name. The show follows the stories of several women across the world as the new phenomenon of the skeins organ takes hold. Evolved for survival and present only in women, the skein puts the power balance of the world in flux by allowing them to produce powerful electricity, quickly setting in motion large-scale change.

Auli’i Cravalho, the Moana star recently cast in Mean Girls, plays the role of Jos Cleary-Lopez, daughter of Seattle mayor Margot Cleary (Toni Collette) and Rob Lopez (John Leguizamo) and one of the first to awaken her electric powers. Edwina Findley, who's made appearances in shows like Fear the Walking Dead, has a story interwoven with Margot's as she helps her navigate the new Power from a political angle. ‘Why Electricity as a superpower?’ reveals author Naomi Alderman
Image
A thought-provoking yet horrifying cautionary tale of repression, violence, and the exercise of power, Prime Video’s upcoming drama The Power is all set to premiere on Prime Video. Based on an award-winning science-fiction novel of the same name by British author Naomi Alderman, The Power is a story about four teenage girls who suddenly and mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will. From London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, the ‘power’ emerges from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world. In face of these unprecedented events, political unrest and gender disparity take a never-seen-before twist.

In The Power, it is the skein – an organ made up of a striated tissue near a woman’s collarbone which is the source of the electrostatic power released via the hands – that grounds the show in a physical reality.

The Power: A New Sci-Fi Series for Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale
Image
If the recent trailer is any indication, Prime Video‘s The Power promises to present both a realistic portrayal of what the sudden onset of superpowers in a subset of the population would be like and a potent statement about the lack of agency for young women in modern times. Set in a world where teenage girls develop the ability to generate electrical charges from their bodies, the series explores the complex power dynamics that arise as a result.

But what kind of show is The Power exactly? Is it the origin story for a kind of superhero race? Is it another sci-fi angle on The Handmaid’s Tale depicting the threats to women from a male-dominated world? Or is it an exploration of how society would react to a potential force for good or evil suddenly arising within humanity worldwide? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

Prime Video unveiled the trailer and key art for its new drama series The Power, and it looks set to go in a different direction from the shows we've watched about people with -- you guessed it -- powers!

The Power: Everything We Know So Far About The Feminist Sci-Fi Series Starring Toni Collette
Image
As our present-day dystopia grows increasingly dire, the more relevant speculative science fiction becomes. We've seen it before with Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days," a near-30-year-old film that effectively predicted the rise of voyeurism in social media and a growing police state in the U.S. We've also seen it more recently with "The Handmaid's Tale," a 1980s novel that felt less like a "what if" and more like a warning. For all its terrifying predictions, "The Handmaid's Tale" became a proper phenomenon when Hulu adapted it into a series in 2017. Success like that isn't easy to replicate, but competitors have certainly been making the effort. Amazon Studios is the latest streamer to bring a similar story to the fore, adapting "The Power" as a series starring Toni Collette. Given that's it's also based on a work of speculative sci-fi, there's already a bit of buzz about this project.
