Set in 1920s England, “Lilies Not for Me” revolves around a gay novelist and his psychiatric nurse who form an unlikely friendship over a series of doctor-prescribed dates. “Through their conversations, he tells her the story of his relationship with an old friend which spiraled out of control when they turned to a risky procedure to cure themselves of their forbidden feelings for one another,” the synopsis reads.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired writer-director Eric Nazarian’s Los Angeles-set crime thriller Die Like A Man for U.S., Canada and international rights.

The coming-of-age journey follows Freddy, a 17-year-old Westsider who is given a gun and asked to prove himself to a veteran gangster he idolizes. Miguel Angel Garcia (The Long Game) stars as the conflicted teen, Cory Hardrict (Tyler Perry’s Divorce in Black) as ruthless gang father figure Solo, and Mariel Molino (NCIS Origins) as love interest Luna.

Nazarian called Die Like A Man “an honest tale about the doomed codes of machismo culture that has spiraled into worsening gun violence and inner city warfare. Freddy’s journey explores the destructive power of internalized rage and the road towards atonement.”

Emma Jade, Alyssa Nicole and Noor Dabash have lead roles in the psychosexual thriller Iconic, the feature film debut from writer-director Matthew Freiheit.

The indie, which has just wrapped production in Los Angeles ahead of a planned 2024 release, stars Jade as makeup guru Rose, who faces hate mail from a rival artist played by Roxette Arisa, in addition to dealing with a violent stalker. After falling into a toxic love spiral with Lily (Nicole), Rose slides down a dangerous rabbit hole of drugs, paranoia and jealousy until she hits an unimaginable rock bottom.

The ensemble cast for Iconic includes Davi Stefond, Chris Bourdreaux, Cherish Waters and celebrity fashion photographer Reinhardt Kenneth. Tyler Stone composed the film’s score.

Freiheit and Carisa Arellano are producing under their production company Good Trip/Bad Trip, alongside Gabriel Dos Santos for Respect The Funk, with Connor Haines and Respect the Funk’s Nathan Doherty joining as co-producers.

Director James Gunn has been named PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year. Per the animal rights organization, Gunn has been selected “for using impressive and stunningly well-crafted CGI animals to inspire tens of millions of moviegoers—who flocked to theaters to see ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’—to have compassion for the millions of animals killed by experimenters in laboratories.”

The third installment of “Guardians of the Galaxy” explains Rocket Raccoon’s origin story as a test subject in a lab, alongside other animals.

“By telling the story of the millions of vulnerable animals abused in experiments, James Gunn has shown himself to be a true animal guardian,” says PETA president Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is delighted to honor him for encouraging exactly what the world needs: empathy for all living beings.”

Ben Van Kleek directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Trevor Vandelac about a journalist’s childhood trauma which resurfaces during an investigation into a woman who claims her son was abducted by aliens.

Alaina Huffman (Smallville), Osric Chau (Superhost) and Ken Kirby (Good Trouble) star and Josh Farnworth, Van Kleek, and Vandelac served as producers. The film just premiered at Austin Film Festival.

Tinder Swindler studio AGC Unwritten has sold US rights to Monica Villamizar and Jordan Bryon’s feature documentary Transition to Gravitas Ventures.

The film follows Australian filmmaker Bryon, a trans man, as he embeds with a Taliban unit as they retake control of Afghanistan.

The primary subjects of the story are Bryon, Afghan cinematographer Farzad Fetrat (Teddy) and Iranian-Canadian photojournalist Kiana Hayeri.

AGC International will screen Transition and launch international sales at the AFM next week, and Gravitas Ventures plans a March 2024 release.

Conversations with Spy Kids helmer Robert Rodriguez, Sundance Film Festival curators Ana Souza and Diana Sánchez Maciel, and 24 short films are among the programming slated for this year’s InFocus: Latinx & Hispanic Cinema Film Festival.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures on Wednesday announced their acquisition of North American rights to Fourth Grade, a comedy starring William Baldwin (Backdraft), Teri Polo (Meet the Parents), Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Ben Begley (For All Mankind) that will be released on demand and in theaters in around 10 markets on July 14.

Written and directed by Brazil’s Marcelo Galvão, Fourth Grade takes place at a prestigious, private, Catholic elementary school, where a principal and a drama teacher gather the parents of the 4th grade students to discuss an alarming situation: a brick of marijuana found in the theater class. To protect the school’s reputation, they need to expel the kid responsible for the weed.

As they try to evade a new evil monster, they confront loss and grief and learn to trust humanity once again.

Heading into next month’s virtual Cannes market Voltage Pictures has promoted Danielle Gasher to director of international sales with immediate effect.

Gasher becomes a senior member of the company’s international sales executive team covering Voltage Pictures’ film slate. She will report directly to president and COO Jonathan Deckter, who made the announcement on Monday (May 17).

The new arrival joined Voltage as manager of international sales and previously worked as sales manager for Toronto-based production and sales company Double Dutch International (Ddi).
