Aparna Sen’s Sonata Turns 8
Image
Subhash K Jha revists Aparna Sen’s Sonata, which starred Shabana Azmi, Lillete Dubey, and Aparna Sen, that released in 2017. We also hear from the director and Shabana Azmi about the making of the film.

There is no sannata in Sonata. The three protagonists talk endlessly. This enchanting chamber piece is like a Beethoven symphony for the sexually impaired. Nothing really ‘happens’ in the 90-minute celluloid discourse on post-menopausal sexuality and other related topics on how to be a woman past her prime without guilt and the accompanying crimes.

Where are the Indian films that celebrate middle-aged women’s sexuality? Sonata is the psychological exploration of three unmarried women facing a mid-life crisis -Aruna Chaturvedi, Dolon Sen, and Subhadra Parekh, a professor, a banker, and a journalist. The 103-minute film revolves around the emotional ups and downs of these three friends, culminating in an event of global magnitude, confronted with...

Short Film Review: Mamu (2024) by Aephie Huimi Chen
Image
According to a saying, “The body keeps the score”: although our mind cannot grasp a certain memory with clarity, our body stores all the feelings and emotions connected to it. In Aephie Huimi Chen‘s “Mamu” (2024), one’s connection to family and roots goes beyond the troubles of an aging and fading mind.

Mamu is screening at Cinema at Sea

Mayaw (Aki Rupi), a native Taiwanese man, raised his daughter Rina (Kirsten Foster) in London — all on his own. As his aging mind begins to fade due to Alzheimer’s, he starts hearing the call of his indigenous Taiwanese homeland. Said call comes in different shapes, such as old memories of him raising Rina or images of magical guardians performing the music of his Amis people, while dressed in traditional attire.

Mixing up folkloric elements with everyday life, “Mamu” delves into the familiar relationship between a father attached to...

The Higashikata Family Tree from Jojolion, Explained
Image
This article contains spoilers for Jojo's Bizzare Adventure Part 8.

Jojo's Bizzare Adventure tells a generation-spanning tale of good versus evil. But, at the end of Part 6: Stone Ocean, the universe underwent a whole reboot. The entire cast was changed, and so too was the setting, timeline, and narrative philosophy of author Hirohiko Araki, who was now more interested in even more experimental storytelling. This new Jojo's Bizarre Adventure universe featured a story titled Jojolion.

This new continuity would receive its own Josuke Higashikata and introduce a new variation of the Higashikata family and their strangeness. Unlike the previous Higashikata family from part 4, Diamond is Unbreakable, this one is far more expanded with multiple generations coming into play.

‘The Fire Inside’: Why Rachel Morrison, the First Woman Nominated for the Cinematography Oscar, Moved to Directing
Rachel Morrison
Gritty and authentic was what Rachel Morrison, the first woman cinematographer nominated for an Oscar (“Mudbound”) was seeking for her directing debut, “The Fire Inside.” Released on Christmas Day, the true-life sports drama earned an A Cinemascore and is building word of mouth at the holiday box office. The $12-million Amazon/MGM feature scored strong reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned performer nominations from both the Gothams and the Indie Spirits, as well as a coveted Golden Frog nomination for Morrison from Cameraimage, which she shared with her cinematographer Rina Yang.

Like Steven Soderbergh, Morrison likes to operate her own camera as both cinematographer and director. One popular picture of Morrison shows her at a late stage of pregnancy, shouldering her camera on the set of “Seberg” (2019). “I was eight months pregnant by the end of it,” she said in a Zoom interview. “Shooting 35mm, mostly or entirely,...

10 Amazing Anime Protagonists That Are Still Underrated
Image
When an anime protagonist is well-written and accomplishes incredible things, the community is bound to take notice and praise that character as one of the best leads in the medium. By now, anime has plenty of legendary protagonists, from Son Goku to Ash Ketchum and Naruto Uzumaki, and even antiheroes like Light Yagami. Still, there are many more anime protagonists who have plenty to offer but don't get much recognition for it.

The 10 Best Slice-of-Life Anime from the Last Five Years, Ranked
Image
Light-hearted themes, stories that strike a chord in the hearts, and characters who portray realism are what make a good slice-of-life anime tick. When the audience is more inclined to enjoy the simplicity of life, they prefer to tune into shows that are an interesting reflection of otherwise mundane things. Slice-of-life anime dont have that larger-than-life energy, nor are the stakes high; rather, these stories are about elevating soft subgenres and tones.

Luckily, there has been a steady supply of heartfelt slice-of-life anime that balances the action and high-profile franchise-dominated seasonal slate. Having said that, fortunately for anime fans, the last five years have produced several quality slice-of-life anime that have impressively blended other subgenres to treat fans with tender tales.

One Piece has become one of the biggest pop cultures in Japan with its epic tale of pirate adventure, friendship, and chasing of dreams. Quick Links Lucas Is an Overlooked Gem Winona Ryder Sparkles in Lucas Lucas Is a Haunting Time Capsule of Corey Haim's Great Potential

Like all great films about the stormy passage through adolescence and high school, the 1986 coming-of-age film Lucas inspires a strong sense of curiosity regarding how the films teenage characters turned out as adults, even as the stars of the film have been immortalized over time. Lucas features early starring performances from Corey Haim and Charlie Sheen, whose tumultuous lives make their touching performances in the movie seem heartbreaking in retrospect. It also marked the screen acting debuts of Jeremy Piven, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and especially Winona Ryder, whose assured performance in the film heralded Ryders emergence as one of the most exciting and interesting young actresses of her generation.

FBI Season 7's New Character Ends Its Three-Year Cast Pattern (But I'm Disappointed About The Trade-Off)
Image
The news of Tiffany's exit came shortly after another FBI season 7 cast update announced that Lisette Oliveri would be joining Jubal Valentine's team as a behavioral analyst named Syd. This was a very different type of role than the one Tiffany performed for the team, but the timing of these cast announcements suggests that Syd is a replacement for Tiffany. I'm not surprised, considering the concerning FBI update about the series' plan to rotate cast members to save money, but I'm not happy with the trade-off.

While I'm glad that FBI is breaking a three-year pattern with its latest cast update, the trade-off is disappointing. When FBI was renewed for three years in March, no major cast changes were announced. However, there was speculation about whether Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) would remain with the series after the season 6 ending, which involved her shooting the suspect who killed Agent Hobbs...

Selecting the right build and team for Lycaon can make a massive difference. He is an S-Rank unit that you will absolutely want to bring along for his Stun and Freeze applications.

A single character in Zenless Zone Zero will not be enough to overcome challenging content. Players must build a team of three Agents that, preferably, complement each other. Each unit has a passive that will be activated when another character has either an identical elemental attribute or the same faction affiliation in Zenless Zone Zero. Fortunately, there are a plethora of options for Lycaon already in the game.

Which Zenless Zone Zero Free 5-Star Character You Should Pick (& Why)
Image
Zenless Zone Zero offers players a free S-rank agent after 300 standard pulls. Standard S-rank agents like Soldier 11 and Nekomata offer powerful attacking options, but may be outclassed by future characters. For overall teambuilding potential, Lycaon stands out as the strongest choice.

Following the example set by HoYoverse's previous game, Zenless Zone Zero allows players to select one free S-rank agent of their choice to receive for free from the standard banner - but only once, and only after 300 standard pulls, making it potentially a tough decision to make. And, while many players will tend to gravitate towards their personal favorites, some agents may be better than others when considered purely from an optimization standpoint.

Like other HoYoverse games, Zenless Zone Zero has a distinct divide between its standard and limited S-rank (equivalent to 5-stars in other games) characters, with limited agents being available only from their exclusive banner. Despite the exclusivity of limited characters,...

Isekai Anime With the Most Twisted Storylines
Image
Cbr Anime Week is brought to you by Hulu Animayhem

Isekai is usually seen as a genre that's rife with power fantasies and all manner of wish fulfillment. After all, the stories of these anime and manga works typically involve characters being reincarnated into strange or powerful new forms that offer much better lives than what they had. At the same time, there are various examples in isekai that have downright twisted and even bleak stories.

These isekai take the concept to its logical extreme, showing how dark the idea of reincarnation can be. This can involve unfortunate reincarnated forms, namely those of animals or inanimate objects, or being brought to worlds that are truly trying and awful. Regardless of why things are as bad as they are, these isekai prove that a character's second life might not necessarily be a better one.

Zenless Zone Zero: Character Tier List
Image
Higher-tier characters can make things easier in Zenless Zone Zero as some candidates have better damage output, while others are less likely to fall in combat. A few Agents also have simpler combat mechanics, making them more reliable.

Keep in mind that tiers are very miniscule in the overall gameplay of Zenless Zone Zero. Picking the best and the worst characters might only improve performance by a few percentage points. Using units you already own for free or pulled characters in Zzz is better than neglecting an important role entirely. Always stick to having at least one attacker, support character, and elemental attributes that exploit a boss' weakness.

Isekai Anime Villains Who Aren't Pushovers
Image
More than any other genre, in isekai anime, the hero dominates anyone and everyone that could ever remotely be a challenge. For some fans, that's part of the appeal. It's all about seeing the protagonist obliterate his enemies while barely putting up any effort at all, turning isekai into the ultimate wish-fulfillment fantasy. Not every isekai features villains that are absolute pushovers, though.

Sometimes, isekai villains can be nearly as impressive as the heroes they're facing. They might have similar levels of raw power, or they might just be far more crafty than the hero, making them struggle harder to get a fair fight. Whatever the case, there are some villains that won't just go away quietly, no matter how much power the hero has access to.

Sailor Moon Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off
Image
Sailor Moon is such a classic epic anime series in part because of its amazing ensemble cast. Usagi Tsukino is the main character, but she's surrounded by amazing, well-written allies. Secondary characters like Sailor Mercury are huge fan favorites because they're so likable and have a defined personality, set of goals, and ethics.

Even the Sailor Moon villains tend to be nuanced and memorable. Many of the villains only last one season, so many fans understandably would love to see more about them in a spin-off. Other side characters only appear for one or two episodes before disappearing, despite how interesting they are. Though Usagi, Sailor Moon, is one of anime's most amazing protagonists, there are many other Sailor Moon characters that could support their own spin-off series.
