Short Film Review: Hey Babe (2025) by Jaron Henrie-McCrea
Image
How many times can you scare people in under six minutes? This seems to be the challenge behind “Hey Babe,” an unassuming horror short with a few twists and scares embedded in its brief running time, shown at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.

Hey Babe is screening at Indian Film Festival Los Angeles

We follow a couple, played by Rupak Ginn and Kiran Deol, in their apartment, mostly in the bathroom, where a mysterious bottle has appeared in their medicine cabinet. The husband is frightened, but the wife does not take the bottle seriously — at least at first. But then, every time she throws it away, it keeps magically reappearing in its initial position in the cabinet. What exactly is going on?

The short film, directed and shot by Jaron Henrie-McCrea, is described as horror, but it is more about creating an ominous atmosphere that quickly fosters dread and anxiety.

Kiran Deol Sets Debut Comedy Special ‘JoySuck’
Image
Exclusive: Comedian Kiran Deol has announced that her debut special, JoySuck, is set to premiere via Comedy Dynamics on Tuesday, April 8th.

In the hour filmed at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles, Deol tackles a landscape which can seem grim, when plenty of things seem to suck. Between the pandemic, inflation, and our era’s crazy politics, the comedian offers an alternative: find the Joy, despite the Suck.

Said Deol, “This is a special made exactly for times like these — to find the light and get back to your joy, no matter what dark things may be happening. I hope its message offers a touchstone and way to cope — by taking tough situations and making them funny.”

An actress and a filmmaker, as well as a comedian, Deol was most recently seen leading the zombie flick Didn’t Die, directed by Meera Menon, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Sundance 2025 Review: Didn't Die, Post-Apocalyptic Zom-Com, Short on Zombies, Short on Comedy
Image
In co-writer/director Meera Menon’s post-apocalyptic zombie tale, Didn’t Die, a zombie-filled life is barely worth living. As always, staying alive means not just dodging the walking dead and their appetites for human flesh, but also keeping yourself fed, securing adequate housing, and if needed, keeping your motor vehicle gassed up and in working order. Get those basics down and you stand a chance of surviving the next zombie attack or unwelcome poacher or human thief. Then too there’s the overriding problem of what to do when you’re all set for the immediate, post-apocalyptic future. For Vinita, that means continuing her long-running podcast/radio series, “Didn’t Die,” a rolling interview show co-produced with her younger...

Didn’T Die Review: Don’t Let A Pesky Nuisance Like A Zombie Apocalypse Stop You From Podcasting [Sundance 2025]
The end of the world as we know it gets closer and closer with each passing day, but how do you plan to spend the apocalypse? For the protagonist of Meera Menon’s Didn’t Die, the apocalypse has been a bummer, but mostly because her podcast audience is shrinking away as they get eaten by the living dead. With a couple clever twists and a strong sense of good-humored doom ‘n’ gloom, Didn’t Die presents a very tangible vision of what the immediate aftermath of a zombie outbreak might look like.

Celebrating its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival as an official selection of the Midnight section program, Didn’t Die stars Kiran Deol (Destroy All Neighbors) as Vinita, a post-apocalyptic podcaster hustling to grow her ever dwindling audience while searching for her place in this new nightmare world. Thankfully, Vinita‘s got fans! And she travels town to town...

‘Didn’t Die’ Review: Zombie Comedy Has More Humor Than Horror
Image
Meera Menon’s Didn’t Die begins with a premise that feels almost inevitable in the wake of a world still reeling from global crises: in a zombie-infested America, a podcast host clings to an ever-dwindling audience, desperate to stay relevant even as civilization collapses. But beneath its wry humor and monochrome aesthetic, the zombie comedyDidn’t Die is less about the undead and more about the isolation that lingers even when survival is technically possible. How do we communicate when everything we once relied on — community, culture, even basic infrastructure — has crumbled? And when you’re broadcasting into the void, who’s really listening? And does it matter?

The film follows Vinita (Kiran Deol), a sardonic, self-aware podcast host who delivers post-apocalyptic updates with the kind of detached irony that millennials perfected as a coping mechanism. She navigates a world where "biters" roam freely, and human connection is increasingly rare.

Sundance 2025 Review: Didn’T Die Podcasts Through an Emotional Zombie Film
Image
"You can keep losing after loss." - Hélène Cixous

Meera Menon's post-apocalyptic dramedy Didn't Die is a sincere indie about podcasting and zombies: a black-and-white love letter to George A. Romero's early works with a modern spin. Walkers aren't unleashed in a 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead 2004 way — you're not here for the bloodshed. Menon and co-writer Paul Gleason's delicate touches to undead storytelling parallel The Walking Dead episodes that focus on community over flesh-munching (be warned). Didn't Die fits into more mumblecore horror modes, and while Menon hits on comically mushy survival notes, there can be a dragging sensation beyond zombies' feet.

Kiran Deol stars as Vinita Malhotra, a successful Indian American podcast host. She returns from a cross-country road tour where she interviews other survivors of a subsided zombie outbreak. Said zombies are still alive, but they're only aggressive at night. Vinita...

‘Didn’t Die’ Review: Podcasting Meets The Zombie Apocalypse In This Offbeat Indie [Sundance]
Image
Everyone has a podcast these days. This sentiment finds its way into the script of “Didn’t Die,” the latest escapade into the post-apocalyptic world of zombie mayhem, more than once, essentially bookending the film to a degree. The idea of someone steadfastly keeping a podcast afloat amid such an ordeal? Fortunately, unlike the lifeless shuffle of many an onscreen portrayal of the walking dead, there’s life here.

Following the requisite zombie attack cold open in keeping with any of its genre peers and concluding with a Ram-Cam signature of early Sam Raimi, we’re introduced to Vinita (Kiran Deol), our intrepid podcast host, and her brother Rish (Vishal Vijayakumar), seen distributing flyers for a live recording of “Didn’t Die,” her show dedicated to survival tips.

‘Didn’t Die’ Review: Pandemic Zom-Com Has All the Right Ideas but Lacks Horror Execution
Image
It’s surprising more contemporary zombie films haven’t been thinly-veiled metaphors for the Covid-19 pandemic. In that vein, Meera Menon’s bleakly amusing “Didn’t Die” has the right idea — one of several remarkable conceptual instincts— though its end result is somewhat scattered. The movie follows sardonic Indian American podcast host Vinita Malhotra (Kiran Deol) through romantic and familial reunions as her show celebrates its 100th episode. Menon attempts to juggle this straightforward plot with thoughtful reflections on lingering trauma two years into an apocalypse, though the film doesn’t always succeed.

Menon’s monochrome zombie comedy-drama is, first and foremost, a character piece: it works best when the audience is allowed to forget about its horror subgenre. Intentional or otherwise, this makes for a fitting embodiment of how mane people operate amid global tragedy; out of sight, out of mind. However, this imbalance proves debilitating in the moments the parallel stories collide,...

Didn’t Die (2025) ‘Sundance’ Movie Review: Millennial Update on George Romero’s Classic Is Tonally Inconsistent Despite the Surprisingly Foresighted Look At the Act of Living
Meera Menon
Some tragedies you never move on from. Some losses are too personal. But everything ends, and everything begins again. That’s just the circle of life, and one of many things that Meera Menon’s “Didn’t Die” explores. It’s of course a post-apocalyptic zombie movie but, the horrors of living in a world infested by the living dead are less of a focus than our need for normalcy – our desperation to just set everything back to the way it was – dismissing the grief that weighs so heavily on us.

Sold as a homage to George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” with gorgeous black and white cinematography and high-framed green, stylized fonts, “Didn’t Die” follows Vinita (Kiran Deol) who runs the namesake podcast in a world that is now invested by ‘biters’ (a fancy name for zombies). Unlike most movies that feature the creatures, the world that...

Would Snarky Millennials Podcast Through a Zombie Apocalypse? ‘Didn’t Die’ Examines Processing Grief, Family and the Undead — Sundance
Image
Meera Menon has directed episodes of some of the biggest series on television, including “The Walking Dead,” “Westworld” and “Ms. Marvel.” But after she had a baby, she wanted to make a radical departure and revisit the beginning of her career, so she made an indie zombie movie with her best friends. Now, “Didn’t Die” is debuting on Tuesday night in Sundance’s Midnight section.

“It was a spontaneous act of creation in the middle of directing a million different TV episodes that are my bread and butter these days,” she says. “I had a moment to breathe because I had the baby that’s in the film. I decided to just make something with my friends again, and it was a movie that was made so much in collaboration with the cast.”

“Didn’t Die” begins well after a zombie apocalypse has taken place, and humanity has more or less...

18 Movies That Could Sell Big at Sundance 2025
Image
While we were eager to tell you last year about Sundance premieres starring Kristen Stewart and Pedro Pascal, the unlikely “Thelma” became the true indie success story of 2024. Unexpected buyer Magnolia Pictures turned the June Squibb film into a hit, opening the doors for other buyers to take their own risks this year.

Heading into 2025, uniqueness is the name of the game, as is picking out the discovery that you won’t see coming, and not necessarily the movie with the big cast, commercial pedigree, or crowdpleaser premise. Last year, we were pretty spot on with “A Real Pain” and “My Old Ass” surviving the long haul, and we were among the few to tell you about “It’s What’s Inside” before Netflix plunked down $17 million to buy it; we were way off on a few others.

The below list is not a collection of movies certain to sell or do so for eight figures,...

Five of Our Most Anticipated Horror Films of Sundance 2025
Image
Another Sundance Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, bringing a new slate of genre discoveries. While the buzziest horror titles, like A24’s Opus, have already caught the attention of horror fans, Sundance excels at introducing emerging filmmakers and thrilling feature debuts.

Other anticipated horror premieres from the upcoming slate of programming includes Alison Brie and Dave Franco‘s co-dependency horror movie Together, and SpectreVision’s Celtic Faerie horror Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel. But it’s only the start of the horror we can’t wait to check out at this year’s fest.

This year’s Sundance features horror across all categories, ensuring a robust lineup of genre titles. Here are five we absolutely can’t wait to see.

Sundance 2025: Filmmakers Who Lost Homes In L.A. Wildfires Share Their Stories As They Land In Park City
Image
One of the best parts of covering the Sundance Film Festival is getting to know the filmmakers and casts, and hearing their stories of struggle to get films made, accepted and the chance to play on a big stage that has launched some of Hollywood’s great careers.

I would be hard pressed to find a group of filmmakers to root harder for than the ones who directed Didn’t Die, a modestly budgeted zombie film that will premiere Tuesday in the festival’s Midnight Madness lineup. Meera Menon directed a film in which a young podcast host clings to her ever-shrinking audience in a zombie apocalypse, with overriding themes that sprang from Covid and the double strikes, about how human nature and a sense of humor is sometimes all we as we try to overcome loss and carry on.

That context takes on extra meaning with the makers of Didn’t Die.

‘Didn’t Die’ Director Finds Unique Ways to Homage George A. Romero in Zombie Dramedy [Sundance Preview]
Image
A snarky podcast host desperately tries to build an ever-shrinking audience in the zombie apocalypse in director Meera Menon‘s Didn’t Die. The feature, set to debut next week at Sundance, is heavily inspired by George A. Romero’s quintessential Night of the Living Dead, but not entirely in the way you’d expect.

The stunning black-and-white photography and green text visually evoke Romero’s defining film, but the homage runs deeper than that while eschewing the conventional zombie apocalypse story. For one, Didn’t Die isn’t all that interested in the zombies but rather in humanity’s desperate need for normalcy, even in the most unusual of circumstances. More charming dramedy than straightforward horror, Menon’s zombie film skips past the obvious Covid lockdown metaphor to instead examine the way we collectively and immediately tried to move past and resume routines as if we hadn’t lived through an unprecedented and traumatic world event.

Review: Destroy All Neighbors is a Zany Shudder Original Movie
Image
The following contains spoilers for Destroy All Neighbors, now streaming on Shudder.

If any horror fan ever dreamed of seeing Alex Winter from Bill and Ted portray a demon who plays prog rock, Destroy All Neighbors has them covered. Destroy All Neighbors is a successful modern horror comedy that feels like a step inside the 1980s. Directed by John Forbes, the Shudder original is zany, morbid, and sickly funny -- causing the film to feel like a gorier version of Beetlejuice. Yet while the movie does borrow from many camp classics, it maintains its own identity. And even though it's outlandish for much of its runtime, it contains a massive amount of heart and relatability, which could very well help catapult this movie to cult status.

Destroy All Neighbors stars Jonah Ray as William Brown, a down on his luck musician who dreams of finishing his ambitious progressive rock album...

Alex Winter Talks Becoming a Horrifying Ogre, ‘Bill & Ted 4,’ and Breaking Up Big Tech
Image
Back in the days of Blockbuster and local video rental stores, there was always that one rack — the one packed with horror flicks with gory-looking covers that scared Eighties and Nineties kids witless. Now, that same vibe has come to Shudder in the form of Josh Forbes’ Destroy All Neighbors, starring none other than Eighties hero Alex Winter.

Winter, star of 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1987’s The Lost Boys, has mostly been in his writer-director era for the past few decades — save for a recent appearance as Bill S.

‘Destroy All Neighbors’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Jonah Ray, Ryan Kattner, Kiran Deol, Randee Heller, Alex Winter, Jon Daly, Thomas Lennon, Kumail Nanjiani | Written by Mike Benner, Jared Logan, Charles A. Pieper | Directed by Josh Forbes

Revolving around two things many of us know all too well, neighbours from hell and writer’s block, Destroy All Neighbors is an over-the-top exercise in splatstick from director Josh Forbes and writers Mike Benner, Jared Logan and Charles A. Pieper.

William Brown makes his living as a sound engineer at Industrial Sound & Magic, helping to bring other people’s music to life. Currently, it’s the obnoxious Caleb Bang Jansen, “Emerson, Lake and Palmer? It sounds like Emerson getting buttfucked by Lake and Palmer.”

But when it comes to his own Prog Rock album, he’s stuck in a rut. While his girlfriend Emily believes in him, everyone else around him seems to exist only to stifle his efforts.

Blood splatters — seemingly everywhere — in Destroy All Neighbors, the new Shudder release that indulges in campy grotesque horror. Comedy horror fans will adore it and 'beta' males out there may finally feel as if they are being seen and heard. Directed by Josh Forbes and penned by Charles Pieper and Jared Logan, the offbeat film stars Jonah Ray Rodrigues (Mystery Science Theater 3000), Alex Winter (Bill & Ted Face the Music), and Kiran Deol (Sunnyside).

The story will immediately raise eyebrows. William Brown (Jonah Ray) is a mess. Neurotic and self-absorbed, the musician can’t rest until he finishes his prog-rock masterpiece. A bullish, downright sickly and noisy neighbor named Vlad (Winter) is dampening William’s creative mojo. When William gathers the courage to confront Vlad, somehow he decapitates him. It, uh… happens?

Time to cover up the freaky murder. But dark clouds follow William, sending him into a quirky if not...

‘Destroy All Neighbors’ Review – Scrappy Splatter-Comedy Leans Heavily on the Humor
Image
New splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors has more on its mind than bad neighbors run amok. Director Josh Forbes, working from the screenplay by Charles Pieper and Jared Logan, crafts a Frank Henenlotter-inspired comedy full of guts and rock ambition. Nestled at the center is a sugary-sweet story of an artist learning to get out of his own way. While that means it has all the right ingredients in place for an infectiously scrappy horror comedy, it might be too narratively streamlined for its own good.

William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues) dreams of prog-rock greatness. He works as a sound engineer at a low-rent music studio by trade and spends the rest of his waking hours trying to crack his magnum opus that’ll earn him a place in rock Valhalla. Well, almost. William frequently finds himself distracted by everything around him, especially his neighbors. Even more so with the...

Destroy All Neighbors review – prog-rock comedy horror is splatterhouse turned up to 11
Tribeca Film Festival 2022
A grumpy sound engineer hoping to revive his career finds he has an anti-talent as a ‘serial manslaughterer’ – with Alex “Bill & Ted” Winter as a severed head

From Barton Fink to Adaptation, the creatively blocked Los Angeles lifer is part of the city’s mythology – and this amusing splatterhouse horror-comedy is a nice addition to that canon. Orbiting around dilly-dallying and passive-aggressive prog-rocker William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), this film makes homicidal psychosis look like a blast. And it also gives Alex Winter his best acting role since Bill & Ted yucking it up as a severed head.

William is hamster-wheeling his way to nowhere in his sound-engineer day job, while eternally finishing off a prog meisterwerk in his home studio. His lovely girlfriend Emily (Kiran Deol) puts up with his quirks, which include a pathological inability to confront their new neighbour Vlad (Winter) about the non-stop partying next door...

Review: Destroy All Neighbors’s Unhinged Silliness is Incredibly Fun and Effective
Image
2024 is opening hard and fast with one of the first genre releases of the year. From director Josh Forbes, Destroy All Neighbors is a story about an artist chasing perfection, avoiding distraction, and accepting that sometimes you need a little help to cross the finish line. It’s also kind of a bonkers movie with a high energy level and a ton of practical effects.

William (Jonah Ray Rodroguez) is stuck. He works as a recording engineer, finishing albums for other, more successful musicians, while slaving away at his passion project - a prog rock album that he has been “so close” to finishing for a number of years. He just can’t seem to get past the final hurdle and bring the whole thing home. He is constantly working on it, but as all artists can relate, sometimes the ending just gets further away. He lives in a...

'Destroy All Neighbors' Posters Feature Jonah Ray Rodrigues and Alex Winter
Image
Jonah Ray Rodrigues (Mystery Science Theater 3000) has nothing but rock n’ roll on his brain in a fresh batch of character posters for Destroy All Neighbors. Collider can exclusively show off Shudder’s latest original movie, promising plenty of blood, guts, gore, and axes - both the weapon and instrumental variety. Also featured in the lineup of images are fellow stars Alex Winter (Bill & Ted franchise), Kiran Deol (Sunnyside), Randee Heller (the Karate Kid franchise), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!). The neon-colored prints tease the style of the film, which was under the direction of Josh Forbes, the eye behind the 2015 horror flick Contracted: Phase II and numerous music videos from bands including Walk the Moon, Sarah Bareilles, and Carly Rae Jepsen.
