Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford said he was rocked by Ozzy Osbourne’s death last month, admitting he “just curled up in a ball and bawled my eyes out for hours” after receiving the devastating news.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” Halford said in an interview with Detroit radio station Wrif’s Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown. “I still can’t believe it now. I’m still grieving, like so many people.”

Rob Halford: I “Bawled My Eyes Out for Hours” Upon Learning of Ozzy Osbourne’s Death
Image
Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford was extremely saddened to learn of Ozzy Osbourne’s passing, revealing, “I just curled up in a ball and bawled my eyes out for hours.”

The singer spoke about his reaction to Ozzy’s death in a new interview with Detroit radio station Wrif (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), recalling, “Oh, man. I got a call the day [Ozzy’s death] happened. I just put the phone down in my hotel room in — I think I was in Leeds, in England, and I just curled up in a ball and bawled my eyes out for hours. I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it now. I’m still grieving, like so many people.”

Meet the Artist Transforming Hair Metal Hits into Brooding Outlaw Country Songs
Image
About a decade ago, Nashville was breathlessly trying to find the next Chris Stapleton, who had just vanquished “bro country” and resurrected a more authentic country sound with his debut album, Traveller. Alex Williams, an Indiana native with a mesmerizing, Stapleton-like baritone and a steely gaze, found himself in the middle of that search.

Big Machine Records signed Williams in 2017 and issued his debut album, Better Than Myself, that same year. He played a sold-out showcase at Nashville’s Basement East and hit the road with Aaron Lewis, another Big Machine signee.

Watch Dolly Parton’s Message to Ozzy Osbourne at Metal Icon’s Final Show
Image
Goodbyes are bittersweet, but they don’t all have to be permanent, at least not as far as Dolly Parton is concerned. In an exclusive video for Rolling Stone, the country star shared a heartfelt send-off to Ozzy Osbourne, who performed his final concert of Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning farewell performance run this past weekend. Parton’s video message played on screens in between sets at Villa Park in Birmingham, England.

“I know you’re at home and what a wonderful place to be, right? Now, are...

Judas Priest Unveil Cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” Ahead of Latter’s Final Show: Stream
Image
Judas Priest have released a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” ahead of the latter band’s final concert.

Priest will not be among the many metal bands performing at the gig on Saturday (July 5th) at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, as they had already signed on to support Scorpions’ 60th anniversary concert in Hannover, Germany that night. Instead, they offered up a fiery studio-recorded cover of the Sabbath classic — a song used by Priest as walk-out music at their own shows — paying their respects to their fellow British metal legends.

Shared Priest in a statement, “We are honored to show our love for Ozzy and Black Sabbath with our homage of ‘War Pigs’, a song we play at every show around the world that fans sing along to, reinforcing their love as well for the legendary Prince Of Darkness!”

With Judas Priest already booked to play the gig Scorpions gig,...

Dustin Lance Black’s Doc ‘Rock Out’ Examines LGBTQ Influence on Heavy Metal, Punk and Rock N’ Roll: ‘It Became Clear That a Queer History Had Been Erased’
Image
Dustin Lance Black not only directed the new documentary “Rock Out” about the queer influence on heavy metal, punk and rock n’ roll, but he’s also in it.

For good reason.

The feature pulls inspiration from a New York Times article by Jim Farber that examined the queer influence on rock, as wells as a question that Black’s late brother Marcus asked before he died 14 years ago: “Are there any gays like me?”

Marcus was a queer punk rock n’ roller. But unlike Lance, who won an Oscar for screenwriting for the Harvey Milk biopic “Milk” and is one of Hollywood’s most outspoken LGBTQ advocates, Marcus was closeted for most of his life. He passed away in 2012 from cancer.

“My brother was black leather-clad almost his entire life and not until later in his life did he cut his long rocker hair,” Black tells me. “He was...

Rob Halford Explains Why Judas Priest Are Missing Black Sabbath’s Farewell Megaconcert
Image
Judas Priest found out too late that Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath would be playing a star-studded farewell concert this summer to join in on the festivities, frontman Rob Halford recently told Metal Hammer. A talent agent in Germany recruited the band to perform at the 60th anniversary concert for another venerated metal band, the Scorpions, on July 5, and despite Sharon Osbourne offering to fly the band to and from Birmingham, England for Ozzy’s final bow in time to honor their Scorpions commitment, Judas Priest declined.

Les Binks, Former Judas Priest Drummer, Dead at 73
Image
Les Binks, former drummer of Judas Priest, has died at the age of 73.

The band confirmed Binks’ passing in an official Facebook statement on Monday (April 14th): “We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends and fans. The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class — demonstrating his unique techniques, flair, style and precision. Thank you Les – your acclaim will live on…”

Following numerous drummers to play in Priest during the band’s formative years, Binks was a member from 1977 through 1979 and recorded two studio albums while behind the kit: Stained Class (1978), and Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather (1978).

Binks also performed on Judas Priest’s iconic 1979 live album Unleashed in the East, which eventually led to his departure from the band due to royalty disputes with the group’s manager at the time.

Speaking on his exit from the band...

Rob Halford on sobriety, health scares, the ‘remarkable’ Glenn Tipton, and being Grammy-nominated 50 years into Judas Priest’s career
Image
Some old-school metalheads may blast the Grammy Awards for supposedly having no rock cred, but that absolutely isn’t the case for Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, an unimpeachably credible rock legend and possibly the jolliest man in metal. Priest are nominated this year alongside “a great kind of broad demographic of all these different generations of metal maniacs” — Metallica, Gojira, Spiritbox, and Knocked Loose featuring Poppy — for Best Metal Performance for “Crown of Horns,” a track off the band’s 19th studio album, Invincible Shield. And Halford could not be more brimming with more “absolute shock and excitement and feelings.”

“We treasure every opportunity and every moment of recognition,” gushes the 73-years-young metal god, grinning over Zoom from his home in Phoenix. “You feel like it’s a win already. The nomination is a win. … This is like a pinnacle. … We’ve had multiple nominations, but to get one...

Judas Priest Announce 50th Anniversary Remixed and Remastered Version of Debut Album Rocka Rolla
Image
Judas Priest are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their debut album Rocka Rolla with a newly remixed and remastered edition.

With fresh mixing work from longtime Priest producer Tom Allom, the reissue is set to release digitally on September 13th and on vinyl and CD on November 22nd.

Get Judas Priest Tickets Here

Released in 1974, Rocka Rolla pre-dated Judas Priest’s heavy metal sound and saw the young British band playing a brand of bluesy hard rock with elements of psych and prog. It was recorded on a small budget during cheap overnight studio sessions by the group’s then-lineup of singer Rob Halford, guitarist Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill, guitarist Kk Downing, and drummer John Hinch.

As Halford explained in the press release for the new reissue, the members of Priest were mostly satisfied with their work in the studio, but upon receiving the first pressing of Rocka Rolla,...

Slayer’s Kerry King “Not Against” Releasing Solo Demos with His Lead Vocals
Image
As one of the most revered thrash metal axemen of all time, Slayer’s Kerry King is a guitarist first and foremost. But he can sing, too.

Aside from the occasional backing vocals, King sticks to the guitar — especially in Slayer. However, like many songwriters, he demos material with his own scratch vocals to lay down his ideas.

In the case of his solo debut, From Hell I Rise, those scratch demos were then handed over to Death Angel’s Mark Osegueda, who performed vocals on the final recordings and assumed the role of frontman in King’s solo band.

In a new interview with The Sdr Show, King was asked about those demos and what his singing voice sounds like.

“I just sound like an angry white punk kid… I think it sounds kind of adolescent,” King admitted [as transcribed by Blabbermouth], adding that most of the demos were first takes.

A generational moment took place during Turnstile‘s performance this past Friday (June 28th) at the Tons of Rock festival in Oslo, Norway.

Hetfield was particularly excited, fist pumping and shouting along to the lyrics, while Halford stood in stoic observance as he appeared to mouth the words to the song.

The clip was first posted to Turnstile’s Instagram Story and was eventually reposted on Reddit and other platforms, gaining some viral traction.

“Actually so sick to see some of the most iconic dudes in heavy music still appreciating the next generation,” read the top comment on the post in the r/hardcore subreddit.

Judas Priest Sound Hell Bent for Immortality on ‘Invincible Shield’
Image
More than five decades into their career, Judas Priest have always been one of metal’s most reliably great bands, likely because the responsibility they feel to the genre weighs just as heavily as the music they make. They never want to let down their fans, the “heavy metal maniacs,” as lead shrieker Rob Halford dubbed them long ago, even as they’ve pressed forward in the face of adversity in recent years. Guitarist Glenn Tipton, a bona fide metal icon known for his electrifying solos, revealed he’d been...

Judas Priest Unleash Blistering New Song “The Serpent and the King”: Stream
Image
Judas Priest continue to unveil tracks from their forthcoming album Invincible Shield ahead of its March 8th release date.

“The Serpent and the King” is the fourth single from the LP so far, and it’s another scalding ripper from the British metal legends.

Rob Halford’s falsetto vocals are front and center — yep, he can still hit that vaunted Painkiller register — and the guitar tone sounds like it’s scratching the speakers from the inside. Under the hood, the guitar work and riff arrangements are densely composed — enough for both thrash and prog heads to feast on.

Regarding the album’s musical direction, guitarist Richie Faulkner told Audio Ink Radio that Invincible Shield “is progressive in the sense that it’s not like verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-finish,” likening it to Priest’s ’70s output.

“It’s musical part-verse-musical part,” he added. “It might do a few twists and turns, musically. It veers from the path of it,...

Judas Priest Unleash Video for New Song “Trial by Fire”: Watch
Image
Judas Priest are gearing up to release a new studio album, Invincible Shield, on March 8th, but fans don’t have to wait that long to hear new music from the band. The metal legends have unveiled the video for “Trial by Fire” as the second single from the LP.

“Trial by Fire” features some classic metal riffage from guitarists Richie Faulkner and Glenn Tipton, along with singer Rob Halford’s anthemic vocals. It follows the album’s debut single, “Panic Attack,” which arrived last month.

“Trial by Fire” and “Panic Attack” follow the ’70s metal sound that Faulkner had hinted about the new album. During a recent interview with Audio Ink Radio, Faulkner said this album was “a bit more ’70s Priest, which I welcome as a guitar player.”

However, he added that it was “not a retro album, by any means. It’s the influence of ’70s Priest in the progressive sense,...

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus Duet on New Version of “Wrecking Ball”: Stream
Image
Dolly Parton has returned with the latest single from her forthcoming album, Rock Star: an anthemic cover of “Wrecking Ball” featuring Miley Cyrus herself. Stream the song below.

Beginning with a soft piano intro, the song crescendos into a full-on pop ballad by its first chorus, with Parton and Cyrus harmonizing the signature hook. Cyrus then takes on the second verse, as a drum part drops, and thick, distorted rock guitars add an extra layer of oomph. By the bridge, orchestral strings carry the progression, and Parton and Cyrus belt together in a call-and-response fashion, with Parton impressively taking on the higher parts.

When the song reaches its grand conclusion, the two throw in a last-second interpolation of Parton’s hit, “I Will Always Love You,” singing one round of that song’s iconic hook before finally landing on a sweet, major chord resolution. Stream the single below.

The pair helped power such classic albums as British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, and Painkiller, along with headbanging anthems like “Breaking the Law,” “Living After Midnight,” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.”

After Downing’s exit, Priest carried on with guitarist Richie Faulkner. But when it was announced in 2018 that Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and would no longer tour (aside from special appearances), it seemingly opened the door for Downing to return. But ultimately, the vacated slot went to Andy Sneap, the co-producer of Priest’s 2018 album, Firepower.

Despite a brief performance with Judas Priest at the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, Downing says the door is now shut on a reunion.

Reba McEntire Says She Can Only Reach Dolly Parton Via Fax
Image
Despite being a country legend in her own right, Reba McEntire doesn’t have much of a leg up on the average person when it comes to contacting the one and only Dolly Parton. In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, McEntire revealed that she can only reach Parton via fax.

“Dolly does not text,” McEntire said in a segment called “Textual Behavior.” When asked whether Parton uses email or can be reached on a landline, McEntire said her only option is through “fax.”

She continued, “I don’t have her telephone number and I asked Kenny Rogers one time. I said, ‘Do you have Dolly’s number?’ He said, ‘No.’ Maybe he said that because he didn’t want to give it to me. I don’t know.

This isn’t a situation where McEntire and Parton are complete strangers. Back in 2011, Dolly inducted...

Judas Priest Unleash “Panic Attack,” First Single from Upcoming Album: Stream
Image
Judas Priest have unleashed “Panic Attack” as the first single from their recently announced upcoming album, Invincible Shield. The song marks the band’s first new music since 2018’s Firepower LP.

The legendary metal act announced Invincible Shield during their set at the Power Trip festival this past weekend. The band’s 19th studio album will arrive on March 8th.

“Panic Attack” proves that Priest are still on top of their game after more than 50 years as a band. Following a thrilling minute-plus instrumental intro, singer Rob Halford’s familiar voice kicks in on the initial verses. The chorus evokes some “Breaking the Law” vibes, as Halford repeats the phrase “panic attack” multiple times.

As mentioned, Judas Priest just played the historic Power Trip festival in Indio, California. They filled in for Ozzy Osbourne, who had to bow out due to health reasons. Along with Priest, the three-day fest featured AC/DC,...

AC/DC Rock Power Trip Festival for First Show in Seven Years: Photos + Video
Image
AC/DC played their first show in seven years on Saturday night (October 7th) at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The evening also featured a set by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Judas Priest.

For this Power Trip gig, AC/DC’s lineup featured classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Angus Young (lead guitar), and Cliff Williams (bass) alongside Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) and drummer Matt Laug.

Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden set the bar high at Power Trip the night before, but AC/DC were up to the challenge, showing no signs of rust as they ripped into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” marking the first time they’ve ever kicked off a set with the Highway to Hell song.

From there, the 24-song set featured one classic after another, with the very next tune being the iconic “Back in Black,” followed by other favorites like “Thunderstruck,...

Dolly Parton Takes on 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” with Linda Perry: Stream
Image
Dolly Parton has released the latest cover from her upcoming rock album, a rendition of the ’90s staple “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. As with many of the reimagined hits on Rockstar, Parton recruited one of the original artists: vocalist Linda Perry. Stream the track below.

Rather than trying to mimic Perry’s original vocals, Parton leans into her strengths on “What’s Up?” and sings “from the top of my lungs” as only she can. Three decades later, the song’s theme of intense societal pressures remains universal. Directed by Steve Summers, the video for the song was filmed at Eakin Elementary School in downtown Nashville. Check it out below.

“First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda,” the always gracious Parton said in a statement. “Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try...

Dolly Parton and Linda Perry Climb That Great Big Hill of Hope in 4 Non Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’ Cover
Image
For her latest rock cover, Dolly Parton takes a deep breath and gets real high on a cover of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” She even gets a little help from the song’s writer and original singer, Linda Perry.

In Parton’s hands, the tune has a country swing to the rhythm and a little twang in the way she sings “peculiar,” that’s anything but peculiar. There’s also a special weight to the song’s final words: “After years and my life is still tryin’ to get...

Image
When Josh Kiszka publicly came out in June, he admits he was apprehensive about the reaction he might get to his heartfelt Instagram post about the “loving, same-sex relationship” he’s been in for eight years. “I was really concerned. I felt like, ‘Well, I’m going to have a target on my back,’” the singer of hard-rock revivalists Greta Van Fleet tells Rolling Stone. “You really feel that way, which is unfortunate, but it’s true.”

But the 27-year-old frontman with an operatic voice straight from the Misty Mountains had nothing to worry about.

Doro Duets with Rob Halford Himself on Cover of Judas Priest’s “Living After Midnight”: Stream
Image
German metal singer Doro has shared a cover of the Judas Priest classic “Living After Midnight” featuring guest vocals from Priest frontman Rob Halford himself.

Considering the heavy metal pedigree of both singers — Doro as the frontwoman of the iconic German band Warlock in the ’80s and as a longstanding solo artist, and Halford as the Metal God — “Living After Midnight” comes as a natural choice for a cover version. It’s a confident and rebellious track, and the duo sings it with conviction. Obviously, Halford has performed the song countless times, but still sounds as triumphant as ever delivering the boastful lyrics alongside Doro.

“Judas Priest and Rob Halford have always been one of my biggest inspirations and continue to be my heroes,” remarked Doro in a press release. “It was so great working with Rob. ‘Living After Midnight’ has always been one of my favorite songs and I...

Dolly Parton’s Cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” Has Arrived, and It Rules: Stream
Image
Dolly Parton is in her rock ‘n’ roll era, and she’s ready to become the champion of the genre. To that end, she shared her cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” on Friday as the latest single from her forthcoming, aptly-named album, Rockstar.

With a dynamic, guitar-driven arrangement reminiscent of Queen’s original version from 1977, Parton’s take on the song is stadium-ready. At 77 years old, she still belts with goosebump-inducing power, soaring through the anthemic melody. Add in the tinge of twangy wisdom she brings to lines about how fame and fortune have been “no bed of roses,” and the tune is elevated to a new level of insight.

Parton also closes the song with a brief interpolation of “We Will Rock You” — complete with the legendary beat, crowd chanting, and some vocal ad-libs from Parton that unmistakably confirm the fact that she will, indeed, rock you.

Greta Van Fleet Share New Album Starcatcher: Stream
Image
Greta Van Fleet have shared their third album, titled Starcatcher. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.

The album was recorded in Nashville by the band and Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb over sessions that guitarist Jake Kiszka described in a statement as “very instinctual.” For Starcatcher, the Michigan quartet aimed to strike at big questions like “What is this consciousness that we have, and where did it come from?” as posited by bassist Sam Kiszka, while also digging deeper into their mythical lore by revisiting concepts from their previous work, including 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate.

“We had this idea that we wanted to tell these stories to build a universe,” drummer Danny Wagner shared. “We wanted to introduce characters and motifs and these ideas that would come about here and there throughout our careers through this world.”

In advance of the LP’s release, the band...

Dolly Parton Doesn’t Plan on Retiring: “I’ll Just Hopefully Drop Dead on Stage”
Image
Health permitting, Dolly Parton has no plans to retire. The country legend rebuffed the idea of hanging up her hat in a recent UK radio interview, proclaiming that she intends to perform until the end of her life.

“I’m not one to sit around doing nothing,” Parton told host Ken Bruce, discussing her upcoming rock album and fashion book. “I would never retire. I’ll just hopefully drop dead in the middle of a song on stage someday.”

“Of course, we don’t have much of a choice in that,” Parton conceded. “But as long as I’m able to work, as long as my health is good and my husband is good, the only way that I would ever slow down or stop would be for that reason. But in the meantime, I’m gonna make hay while the sun shines.”

That hay includes Rockstar, an album comprised...

Judas Priest Replaces Ozzy Osbourne as Power Trip Headliner After Singer Pulls Out Due to Health
Image
Ozzy Osbourne has decided to call off his headlining set at the inaugural Power Trip festival this fall, admitting his health is still shaky and he’s not willing to have his first show in almost five years be “half-assed.” Judas Priest will take his place instead, the band announced Tuesday.

“As painful as this is, I’ve had to make the decision to bow out of performing on Power Trip in October,” Osbourne wrote on social media Monday. “My original plan was to return to the stage in the...

Judas Priest Replace Ozzy Osbourne on Power Trip Festival Lineup
Image
A day after Ozzy Osbourne announced that he was bowing out of the Power Trip festival in Indio, California, fellow legendary metal act Judas Priest have been named his replacement.

In revealing that he isn’t physically ready to play the October gig, Ozzy stated, “The band that will be replacing me on Power Trip will be announced shortly. They are personal friends of mine and I can promise that you will not be disappointed.”

That led to wide speculation that Judas Priest would be filling the slot, as Osbourne and Priest frontman Rob Halford are very close friends.

On Tuesday (July 11th) it was officially announced that Judas Priest have indeed been tapped to play the Saturday (October 7th) bill, alongside AC/DC.

“Power Trippers, are you ready for some Judas Priest style heavy metal?,” asked the band in an enthusiastic statement. “We are excited and ready to raise...

Dolly Parton Not Interested in AI Hologram: “I Don’t Want to Leave My Soul Here on Earth”
Image
Don’t expect to see an AI hologram of Dolly Parton performing live once she’s gone. In a recent press conference, the country legend (via The Independent) said she has no desire to leave her “soul” behind.

“I think I’ve left a great body of work behind,” Parton said. “I have to decide how much of that high-tech stuff I want to be involved [with] because I don’t want to leave my soul here on this earth.”

She continued, “I think with some of this stuff I’ll be grounded here for ever… I’ll be around, we’ll find ways to keep me here.” According to The Independent, Parton also quipped that “everything” about her — including “any intelligence” — was artificial anyway.

Last year, Abba launched their “Abba Voyage” London residency (grab tickets here) featuring the (very much alive) Swedish pop icons in hologram form as they looked...

Judas Priest’s Rob Halford Supports Josh Kiszka After Greta Van Fleet Singer Comes Out
Image
Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford sent a message of support to Greta Van Fleet singer Josh Kiszka after the latter came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

The metal legend simply commented, “I love you Josh,” along with a number of supportive emojis, on the Instagram post in which Kiszka revealed his sexuality.

As reported on Tuesday (January 20th), Kiszka wrote, in part, “I’ve been in a loving, same-sex relationship with my partner for the past 8 years. Those close to me are well aware, but it’s important to me to share publicly.” He added that it was important for him to share his truth in the wake of new anti-lgbtq+ legislation in Tennessee, where he has “settled a home.”

Halford came out as gay in a 1998 interview with MTV. In the 25 years since, he has embraced his status as an icon of the LGBTQ+ community.

Hear Dolly Parton Scream for Vengeance With Judas Priest’s Rob Halford
Image
In 1980, Dolly Parton was ruling the pop and country charts with “9 to 5” while Judas Priest were “Breaking the Law” and the members of Mötley Crüe weren’t even wearing leather. At that point in time, none of those artists likely ever thought they’d cross paths. Now, Parton has teamed with Priest screamer Rob Halford and Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist John 5 on a new song, “Bygones,” one of two new tracks Parton released from her upcoming Rockstar album, out Nov. 17.

Over crunchy guitars, Parton asks...
