It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. The upcoming Red Sonja reboot hasn't had the easiest of journeys to the big screen, losing multiple filmmakers - including X-Men helmer Bryan Singer - and even its main star (Thunderbolts*' Hannah John-Kamen).
M.J. Bassett has since stepped behind the camera to direct the action, with rising star Matilda Lutz tapped to bring the iconic warrior to life in a movie fans hope will do this character justice.
After all, it's been nearly four decades since Red Sonja graced the big screen, with Brigitte Nielsen bringing the iconic hero to life way back in 1985.
Earlier this week, we caught up with action icon Rhona Mitra to discuss her role in XYZ Films' Hounds of War. She's been tapped to play an unnamed character in the new Red Sonja and we asked what she could tease about the project.

"Why are you here?" "Revenge." What a line. XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an action movie called Hounds of War, a new movie from the action director Isaac Florentine. This one will be released on VOD directly starting in September. Hounds of War about the best military mercenaries money can buy. Known as "The Hounds", they are sent on a final mission by their creator: a carefully planned trap set up to destroy them. So another "trap" movie to play against M. Night Shyamalan's Trap? Sure why not. Hounds of War stars Rhona Mitra, Robert Patrick, and Frank Grillo, with Steven Elder, Yvonne Mai, Joey Ansah, Lee Charles, and Mark Strange. Looks like it was filmed mostly on Malta, which is an infamous tax haven and a nice place to save money making a movie, even though it's not the most exciting place to shoot something this generic & derivative.

Director Isaac Florentine believes Scott Adkins should have played James Bond and Batman because he can both act and perform incredible stunts without the need for doubles. During his press tour for John Wick 4, Keanu Reeves was asked about the two “martial arts legends” in Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada he got to work with in the film and made a point of adding Scott Adkins to this list. However, the return of Scott Adkins, who played Deadpool's martial arts double in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, could have greatly benefited the film and added to its comedy. Adkins has since become a well-known martial artist in action movies, and his inclusion would have provided an opportunity for Wade's fourth-wall-breaking jokes and references to the previous film.
Deadpool 3 is bringing back Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but is also seemingly missing an equally strong comeback opportunity. The Merc with a Mouth scored two big theatrical hits with 2016's Deadpool and its 2018 follow-up Deadpool 2, but there has been an unusually long wait for the return of Ryan Reynolds's Wade Wilson. This is due to the combination of 20th Century Fox being bought by Disney and Deadpool's...

The return of Yuri Boyka in Undisputed 5 has become far more likely after the massive success of John Wick: Chapter 4. The Undisputed franchise first got its start with the 2002 Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames-led boxing film Undisputed, but it was its 2007 straight-to-video sequel Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing that really launched the franchise to glory. The Isaac Florentine-directed martial arts film introduced Scott Adkins as the highly formidable and determined Yuri Boyka, who later transitioned from villain to hero in the sequels Undisputed 3: Redemption and Boyka: Undisputed.
Though Scott Adkins says a script for Undisputed 5 has been written, the series has not yet managed to move into its next chapter. With that being said, the legendary Baba Yaga himself has lent The Most Complete Fighter in the World a major helping hand in bringing Undisputed 5 to life. Undisputed 5 could bring aboard many great martial arts stars for Yuri Boyka's return to the ring. The Undisputed franchise first introduced Yuri Boyka (Scott Adkins) in Isaac Florentine's Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, with the highly formidable Mma fighter Boyka determined to prove himself worthy of the title of The Most Complete Fighter in the World. Though he was introduced as the antagonist of Undisputed 2, Boyka quickly became the Undisputed franchise's central character, returning as the protagonist of Undisputed 3: Redemption and Boyka: Undisputed.
Though Scott Adkins says there is a script for Undisputed 5, the next chapter of the Undisputed series has not yet gotten off the ground. Naturally, in a martial arts franchise like the Undisputed movies, a cast of great martial artists is a must. While Undisputed 5 bringing back Michael Jai White, Marko Zaror, and other past stars of the series would be a fantastic concept,...

When casting the hottest action stars for John Wick: Chapter 4, Scott Adkins was a natural choice. Director Chad Stahelski has tried to get Adkins into all the John Wick movies, but due to scheduling conflicts it hasn’t worked out until now. Cast as Fat Killa in the new movie, Adkins is almost unrecognizable under the heavy makeup, gold grill, and fat suit. In real life, Adkins is devilishly handsome, so much so he often plays villains. He’s also built like Adonis but even more yoked. It’s a body he’s earned through a lifetime of martial arts practice.
In real life, the Adkins family are butchers by trade. Adkins was born and raised in England, and his first exposure to martial arts began at age 10 with Judo. When he was 13, he was the victim of a robbery, and that experience hardened his resolve. After that, he dedicated his life to training,...

The “John Wick” franchise has a reputation for razzle-dazzle filmmaking and serving as demo reels for some of the world’s finest – or at least most promising – action movie stars. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is no exception, with Donnie Yen taking center stage alongside franchise star Keanu Reeves, as Hiroyuki Sanada and Marko Zaror lend prestige and support. Bringing the opposite of “prestige,” at least in terms of the role he plays in the Chad Stahelski-directed actioner, is Scott Adkins.
Adkins has made a name for himself as one of the preeminent filmmakers in the world of direct-to-consumer (DVD/VOD/streaming/etc.) action movies. Yuri Boyka has an impressive fight record in the Undisputed franchise, though it has a few low points. First introduced in Isaac Florentine's Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, Scott Adkins's reformed villain Yuri Boyka competes in Mma matches in a Russian prison, believing himself gifted by God to be, as he puts it, The Most Complete Fighter in the World. Through Scott Adkins's portrayal of Boyka, he and Florentine made the Undisputed series highly popular among martial arts fans with their thoroughly incredible martial arts fight scenes.
While Boyka's pride has occasionally gotten the best of him, his skills as an Mma fighter are anything but overrated. The sheer number of victories Boyka has accumulated in the Undisputed franchise demonstrate his might in the ring, his indomitable will to overcome his opponents being as vital to his wins as Boyka's vast martial arts knowledge. You know you’re in for a good treat every time you see the names of Isaac Florentine and Scott Adkins pop-up in a movie, especially if you adore action cinema that much. Just like his Undisputed and Ninja movies, Seized sees Florentine makes the best out of Adkins’ fighting prowess in a chain of testosterone-inducing scenes. This movie begins by swiftly setting up who’s who and what’s happening. Richard (Adkins) is a middle-aged man who works as a security consultant in Mexico, living with his only child Taylor (Matthew Garbacz). Florentine doesn’t waste his time to show us that this father-son relationship isn’t working well as Taylor constantly rebelling against everything his dad says each time they talk to each other. The kid also...

"There are no good people in there - no saints, only sinners." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action thriller titled Seized, the latest from B-movie action filmmaker Isaac Florentine (who also made Acts of Vengeance with Adkins). Mma action star Scott Adkins plays a former Special Forces agent whose son is kidnapped and must now wipe out three dangerous crime syndicates if he wants to see him alive again. Adkins has been starring in endless action movies recently, none of them worth watching, but he still keeps making them - he's also in Debt Collectors and Legacy of Lies this year. Seized also features Mario Van Peebles with a killer cowboy hat, Steven Elder, Karlee Perez, James P. Bennett, David Fernandez Jr., Luis Gatica, and Mauricio Mendoza. Another day, another mindless bland action movie to ignore. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Florentine's Seized, direct from...

Thanks to the likes of Taken, the John Wick franchise, the presence of Jason Statham, and even Netflix's Extraction, there has been a real appetite over the last decade or so for no-nonsense, take no names, shoot first, then shoot again action movies. Well, an upcoming movie that is sure to appeal to this fanbase is Seized, starring action cinemas worst kept secret, Scott Adkins, for which a trailer has now been released.
The movie's official synopsis is as follows: "Hiding out with his son Taylor on the Mexican coast, Nero hopes to put his violent Special Forces career behind him. But after Nero's home is attacked and Taylor is abducted, the mysterious Mzamo orders Nero to slaughter the members of three rival crime syndicates. If he fails, Taylor will die. Now, with bullets flying and bodies dropping as Nero completes his mission, he races to find Mzamo's hideout and seek revenge.
