Image
Dwayne Johnson has officially launched his Oscar campaign.

Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the star's latest, The Smashing Machine, is generating significant buzz — particularly for Johnson's transformative performance. Directed by Benny Safdie and costarring Emily Blunt, the film tells the true story of Mark Kerr, a legendary mixed martial artist who rose to prominence during the early days of the UFC while privately grappling with a serious opioid addiction. To embody Kerr, Johnson underwent a striking physical transformation, aided by two-time Oscar-winning prosthetic makeup artist Kazu Hiro. But while critics all praise Johnson's performance, they are mixed on the overall film, as evidenced by its 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Little Prayer Review — Quietly Poignant, Deeply Moving
Image
The immediate comparison to A Little Prayer will be Junebug, the 2005 independent film directed by Phil Morrison, which helped make Amy Adams a star and earned her her first Academy Award nomination. That film revitalized a tired genre with an unassuming sense of humor and a depth that gradually unfolds.

That connection is no surprise, since Angus MacLachlan, the writer-director of A Little Prayer, wrote Junebug. While lacking the earlier film’s signature humor, the experience is an absorbing picture that gradually peels back subtle layers of revelation until its final scene—each one more powerful than the last.

Upcoming Star Wars spinoff adds major names to cast as production begins
Image
The Star Wars movies had been on the back burner for a while. When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they had plans for multiple films besides the sequel trilogy. However, while Rogue One was a hit, Solo faltered and was followed by the disappointing reaction to The Rise of Skywalker.

The franchise found its next chapter on Disney Plus, where it enjoyed successes like Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, although that has been somewhat offset by some missteps like the short-lived The Acolyte. Meanwhile, Disney has continued plans for new films, including a trilogy set 15 years after Ros with Daisy Ridley as Rey forming a new Jedi Order.

Today, production has begun...

Shouldn’t a first look, you know, actually give you a first look at a movie? Especially when it’s the first glimpse of a “Star Wars” set we’ve seen in over six years?

Shawn Levy's Starfighter Cast Finally Has Us Excited About Star Wars Again
Image
Do you remember the days when "Star Wars" movies used to be good? Not "Star Wars" in general -- the movies. "Andor" season 2 has barely stopped tugging our heartstrings with its grounded rebel stories, the well-received "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" video game was released in 2023, and Marvel is dropping sweet (and often Darth Vader-themed) comics all the time. "Star Wars" as a franchise is doing just fine. The movies, on the other hand, could use a win.

It's been close to a decade since the franchise rolled out a truly worthwhile big-screen effort -- either "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016) or "The Last Jedi" (2017), depending on your opinion...

Set to premiere on AppleTV+ in 2026, the Cape Fear show is inspired by John D. MacDonald's novel The Executioners. The story has been adapted twice before with Scorsese's 1991 movie and a 1962 version. The novel follows a lawyer who is stalked by a man he helped put in prison following his release.

When compared to the glowing reviews The Irishman received, Scorsese's version of Cape Fear has become underrated. However, based on everything that is known about AppleTV+'s Cape Fear series, viewers may want to revisit Scorsese's film.
