Image
Scrubs is officially scrubbing back in.

A long-discussed revival of the 2000s comedy series has landed a series order from ABC, where it’s been in development since December 2024 — though series creator Bill Lawrence and members of the cast have talked about reuniting for years before that. Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke, who starred in the original version of the show, have signed on to join series lead Zach Braff in the revival. All three will also be executive producers on the show, which is set to premiere in the 2025-26 season.

“Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,” Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso) said in a statement.

The Scrubs Revival Sounds A Lot Like The Pitt (And That's A Bad Idea)
Image
So, we're getting a "Scrubs" revival. It's frustrating, because I'm a huge fan of Bill Lawrence's medical comedy that originally ran from 2001 to 2010 on NBC — and, for the last year of its existence in that form, ABC. Led by Zach Braff as Dr. John "J.D." Dorian, the show was funny, shockingly emotional, and surprisingly medically accurate, and its main cast of characters — Donald Faison's cocksure surgeon (and J.D.'s bestie) Dr. Chris Turk, Judy Reyes' tough but big-hearted nurse Carla Espinosa, Sarah Chalke's neurotic but brilliant Dr. Elliot Reid, and the stubborn and often enraged doctor who serves as J.D.'s unwilling mentor, Dr. Perry Cox, played by John C. McGinley — are uniformly excellent.

All of this sounds like it could add up to a promising reboot of the series, but I have my doubts, and it's because of Lawrence's recent comments on the forthcoming...

Scrubs Creator Bill Lawrence Explains How The Real Medical Field Will Impact Revival Series
Image
Bill Lawrence recently offered some insight into the upcoming Scrubsrevival series. According to the creator of the flagship show, real-life changes in the medical field have influenced the new series.

Speaking to TV Line, Lawrence touched on the series' divisive ninth season while confirming that the upcoming Scrubs revival is very much about the original leading duo of Jd and Turk. "I hate the narrative, like, 'Oh, the ninth year sucked.' No, it didn't," he said. "It's sour grapes, whatever, I'm so lucky to have done it. I didn't get to work on [that season] as much, but that writing staff did a great job."

Lawerence went on to praise the actors who joined the series in its ninth season. "I think Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe and Dave Franco have all gone on to have great careers because they were really good," he explained. "If it had been a...

John Candy's Penultimate Film Was A Western Flop With A 0% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
John Candy passed away on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43, having died from a heart attack. Candy had a history of heart issues in his family and spent portions of his life struggling with alcoholism and tobacco and cocaine usage. He was taken far too soon, as Candy was a charismatic, funny, talented comedian with dazzling movie star qualities. He died in Durango, Mexico, where he was filming Peter Markle's unremarkable Western comedy "Wagons East!," a film in which Candy starred opposite Richard Lewis.

"Wagons East!" was an inauspicious exit for Candy. The film was released only five months after Candy died, and it was a horrible box office bomb, earning only $4.4 million. What's more, it was terribly reviewed, racking up the rare and unenviable 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 30 reviews). Roger Ebert gave it one half of a star, calling it one of the least amusing comedies he had ever seen.

Zach Braff Suggests Scrubs Reboot Will Show Jd "Beaten Down By The System"
Image
The reboot of Scrubs hasn't officially been confirmed yet, but show creator Bill Lawrence and star Zach Braff, who played John "Jd" Dorian, are both very excited about it. They also have some very interesting ideas for the characters that will likely surprise viewers.

TVLine reported that Lawrence and Braff opened up about the Scrubs reboot during the Atx TV Festival. Lawrence explained that they had to take into account that the actors are older, and that means their characters will be less immature. “It’s fun to talk to [the fans] about it because part of the burden is Zach and Donald [Faison] were going, ‘Eaaaaaagle!’ Those guys are 50 now!” he said. “So we have to figure out what that looks like.”

Braff agreed that there are difficulties that have come with revisiting the project. “When Bill and I shoot the s**t about it, [we ask ourselves] how do you still have the spirit...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Making Fun of Billy Joel Had a Deeper Meaning That Makes It Even Funnier
Image
Brooklyn Nine-Nine remains one of the last entries in a line of long-running network sitcoms. The series premiered in 2013 and revolves around detectives and staff at the titular NYPD precinct. Like most sitcoms, it featured several running gags, including making fun of Billy Joel.

In the show’s eighth season, a new character was introduced, who was portrayed as a Billy Joel superfan. While the character led to several jokes about the singer, the recurring gag also had a deeper layer to it. Here is why Brooklyn Nine-Nine continued to make fun of Billy Joel.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine made fun of Billy Joel through Frank O’Sullivan

Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiered in 2013 and brought the comedic talents of Andy Samberg to a wider audience. The actor’s performance as Jake Peralta, alongside the ensemble cast, which included the late Andre Braugher, received widespread acclaim and popularity.

Zach Braff Says the 'Scrubs' Reboot Will Feature a "Beaten-Down" J.D.

There are few revival announcements that have captured the attention of a certain age group (millennials) more than that of the hopeful Scrubs sequel series. Since it was announced at the tail end of last year that the original project’s creator, Bill Lawrence, was on-board to get back to the stories at Sacred Heart Hospital, the ball has been rolling and things are looking incredibly promising. Just last month, series star, Zach Braff, announced his plans to reprise his role as J.D., and now, thanks to both Braff and Lawrence, we have an idea for the storyline.

Zach Braff To Return As J.D. in 'Scrubs' Reboot
Image
Fans have been clamoring for a follow-up or reboot of the popular medical comedy Scrubs, and that became a reality when it was announced a few months ago that creator Bill Lawrence was on board to make that happen. At the time, the stars of the original series were said to be in talks to return, but now word has come that someone very important to the original cast of characters is officially returning: J.D. himself.

Per Deadline, Zach Braff will officially return as John "J.D." Dorian in the Scrubs reboot. Securing Braff was no easy task, as negotiations were said to be difficult, for various reasons. Money was one of the hurdles, but also Braff's desire to shoot the series in Los Angeles as opposed to Vancouver, which was the original plan. The negotiations got so tense at one point that some believed it would kill the project,...

Scrubs reboot | Zach Braff set to return to Sacred Heart Hospital
Image
Original star Zach Braff joins the cast of Scrubs reboot, we hear. More on the show’s plans below.

We reported last December that Scrubs, one of the funniest medical shows of the noughties, is due a reboot. Original creator Bill Lawrence, who went on to also create the critically acclaimed AppleTV+ series Shrinking and Ted Lasso, is on board to bring the sit-com back on our screens.

The project seems to be steadily moving on and it’s now being reported that Zach Braff is returning to Sacred Heart Hospital as Doctor John Michael Dorian, or Jd.

Deadline reports that Braff’s casting didn’t happen easily as the negotiations went on for months. Braff reportedly wanted to film the series in Los Angeles rather than Vancouver and there seems to have been issues regarding pay as well. Apparently, the entire project nearly fell apart at one point, but...

Scrubs’ Zach Braff Is Returning For ABC’s Reboot Of Beloved Sitcom
Image
The long-gestating Scrubsreboot has just taken a major step forward, with original star Zach Braff now officially set to return as John “J.D.” Dorian. Speculation about a possible reboot or series continuation of the hit medical comedy had been rife for years before official confirmation that the project was in development at ABC in December 2024. While original series creator Bill Lawrence would later confirm that a writer’s room was being assembled in February this year, there was still no official confirmation of which original Scrubs cast members would be returning.

Per Deadline, Braff has now officially signed on to reprise his role as J.D. after months of negotiations. While ABC and 20th Century Television have declined to comment on this latest development, the original report suggests that the initial talks had previously been at an impasse over both money and Braff’s requests to film in Los Angeles,...

J.D., one of the main characters from the Og series. The update follows the reports that Scrubs was getting an update back in December, though series creator Bill Lawrence and some of the show's cast members have long been teasing their desire to revisit the show. As of now, ABC and 20th Television have not offered an official comment on the casting.

One hurdle that stood in the way of the new series moving forward was Lawrence's busy schedule.

We Finally Know if Zach Braff Is Returning for ABC’s ‘Scrubs’ Reboot
Image
J.D. is back in the building for the Scrubs reboot. After years of discussing a way to resuscitate the medical sitcom with creator Bill Lawrence, original series star Zach Braff has signed on to reprise his role as the iconic physician and self-described sensitive guy, bringing the show's return one step closer to reality. Development on the reboot officially got underway back in December, and optimism about a comeback at ABC has only grown since then, with Disney TV chief Eric Schrierhighlighting the "creative desire" of all involved as a big motivator. With Braff officially back in the fold, it may open the door for more original cast members to get their scrubs back on and join in the fun.

That Braff is reuniting with Lawrence isn't necessarily surprising. Braff has been vocal over the years about where he imagines J.D.'s story would go after the series concluded...

Zach Braff Boards ‘Scrubs’ Reboot at ABC
Image
Dr. John Dorian is back on call: Zach Braff has signed on for the Scrubs update that’s in development at ABC.

Braff will reprise his role from the 2001-10 series as John, aka J.D., the narrator and central character for most of the show’s first run. ABC confirmed it was developing a Scrubs reboot in December, after creator Bill Lawrence, Braff and other members of the cast had for years said they’d like to reunite.

ABC and 20th Television, which is producing the reboot, declined to comment.

“We’re gonna do it, you guys know,” Lawrence said during a Scrubs reunion panel at the Atx TV Festival in 2022. “If you ever have an excuse to work with people you want to spend time with anyway, run to it.”

Despite the willingness of those involved, the path to the ABC project wasn’t a straightforward one. Lawrence currently...

Zach Braff Joins ‘Scrubs’ Reboot at ABC
Image
Zach Braff is heading back to where it all started: “Scrubs.”

Braff, who starred in the original “Scrubs” series from 2001-2010, has joined the cast of the reboot show, which is currently in development at ABC, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

The news comes months after news broke in December that a follow-up of the hit medical comedy is early development at 20th Television for ABC. “Scrubs” executive producer Bill Lawrence is attached to EP the new series, but he won’t be returning as showrunner as he balances his other series, including Warner Bros. TV’s and Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” “Ted Lasso” and “Bad Monkey.”

With Braff, who led the cast as Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, confirmed for the reboot, it can be expected that the new series will look towards casting the series’ additional stars, including Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes.

J.D. Scrubs In: Zach Braff Set To Return For ABC Reboot
Image
Finally more good news for Scrubs fans. Five and a half months after the reboot of the beloved medical comedy secured series creator Bill Lawrence, the project has locked in star Zach Braff, sources tell Deadline. He will reprise his role as John “J.D.” Dorian in the Scrubs followup, which is in development at ABC from 20th Television. Reps for the network and studio declined comment.

The deal with Braff comes after months of touch-and-go negotiations that hit major hurdles over both money and Braff’s request for the series to film in Los Angeles and not Vancouver as originally planned, sources said. The impasse was so serious, there was a chance for the entire project to be, um, scrubbed, until the two sides recently came to an agreement. Because Scrubs is still in development, no filming location has been announced.

The Scrubs reboot is proving to be a...

Zach Braff Joins ‘Scrubs’ Reboot in Development at ABC
Image
Zach Braff may soon be scrubbing back in at Sacred Heart. The actor is on board to reprise the role of J.D. in a reboot of “Scrubs” being developed at ABC.

The reboot was first reported to be in early development in December, with original series creator Bill Lawrence serving as executive producer but not showrunner.

Lawrence, Braff and other “Scrubs” alum have discussed the idea of a reboot for years, but it couldn’t go into motion until after negotiations between Disney, which owns the IP, and Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence has an overall deal. While working on “Scrubs” at Disney-owned 20th Television, Lawrence remains under his deal at Wbtv, where he produces the Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking,” “Ted Lasso” and “Bad Monkey.”

“Scrubs” premiered in 2001 on NBC, which aired the series for seven seasons before cancelling it. It was then renewed by ABC for an eighth season,...

The show is based on the 1981 film of the same name from Alan Alda, with Fey adapting the new series to TV with Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield. The Scrubs reboot series just got a major update from Disney TV boss Eric Schrier. Se7en Sequel Isn't Likely, but Still Possible if 1 Condition Is Met
Image
New Line Cinema's Chief Commercial Officer shoots down a sequel to David Fincher's Se7en, unless one specific person returns.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener was asked if a sequel to Se7en was anywhere on the studio's horizon. Brener responded with a simple, "No." When pressed about the potential title of Eight, Brener again stated, "No," before adding, "I mean, if David Fincher wanted to do it, sure."

Directed by Fincher from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker, 1995's Se7en starred Brad Pitt as the overly eager homicide Detective David Mills and Morgan Freeman as the disenfranchised veteran Detective Lieutenant William Somerset. The film also starred Gwyneth Paltrow as Tracy Mills, Detective Mills' loving yet lonesome wife, Kevin Spacey as the obsessive serial killer John Doe, Richard Roundtree as District Attorney Martin Talbot, R. Lee Ermey as Mills and Somerset's Police Captain,...

Five Great Sitcoms with Truly Terrible Final Seasons
Image
Plenty of sitcoms jump the shark. Sometimes the cast loses a key character or the writers run out of ideas. But perhaps the most frustrating foil is when a sitcom is solid all the way through only to shit the bed for its final season, tarnishing its legacy for all time.

If only these five shows had gotten out a year earlier, we could binge rewatch them without that looming sense of dread.

1 Roseanne

Roseanne is probably the most famous example of this, as the final season undermined the basic premise of the show. The whole idea behind Roseanne was that it was a show about a struggling blue-collar family in the Midwest and its best episodes often dealt with the Conners’ money troubles. So, in the final season, what do they do? The Conners win the lottery, eliminating their relatability.

The show also had its most beloved character, John Goodman’s Dan Conner,...

John Wayne's 'The Green Berets' Redefined the War Genre (in a Bad Way)
Image
No film so perfectly encapsulates the generation gap in America in the '60s than John Wayne's corny Vietnam War epic, The Green Berets. The genre has reached such a level of ubiquity and cliché that soon it birthed its own parody in the form of Tropic Thunder. There’s no shortage of productions exploring the political nuances and the social ramifications of the war today, but that was a different story in 1968.

Adapting the 1965 best-selling novel of the same name to theaters, it boasted John Wayne in the lead, with The Fugitive star David Janssen, Jim Hutton, and George Takei in supporting roles. The Vietnam War was a travesty in many respects. Blame US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. For the movie, that is. Come to think of it, blame him for the war too. Reactions to the action flick were unkind. For screenwriters, journalists, and directors, it only...

David Johansen on the New York Dolls’ Colorful History: The Lost Interview
Image
Three years ago, in the midst of researching my book Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, I knew I had to talk to David Johansen. Not because Johansen — who died Feb. 28 at the age of 75 — was one of those folksingers associated with the neighborhood, but because his first major band, the New York Dolls, made its name and proudly trashy reputation at the Mercer Arts Center, a multi-tiered performance space in the Village.

In their original incarnation, the Dolls only lasted a few years,...
