'On Fire' Is Streaming for Free & More Relevant Than Ever
Image
As extreme weather events increase around the world, from massive flooding in Spain to intense freezing in Texas, disaster films feel less and less fictional. While we're not quite at The Day After Tomorrow (but we're getting there), our hot reality is certainly reflected in films like 2023's On Fire, an overlooked thriller starring Fiona Dourif, Lance Henriksen, Asher Angel, and Peter Facinelli (who co-wrote and co-directed the film). With the devastating wildfires currently ravaging California, the film, which is now streaming for free, feels more prescient than ever.

On Fire depicts a California family struggling through hard times. Facinelli plays the father, a contractor whose business is falling apart. Dourif plays his very pregnant wife, Angel plays their son, and Henriksen is great as the depressed and nearly senile grandfather. When sparks from a nearby forest fire set their area ablaze, the family is forced to evacuate their somewhat...

Tubi’s ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ Is ‘Die Hard’-Lite At A Wedding [Review]
Image
There have been innumerable films titled some variation of Til Death Do Us Part, several of which are already streaming on Tubi. Writer Chris Rhetts differentiates his wedding-themed thriller by co-opting action movie tropes, wherein the protagonist, event planner Vanessa (Virginia Ma), is forced by the villain Terrance Bruckner (Maxwell Almono) to do his bidding or risk the lives of 32 wedding guests and employees.

Rhetts’ script wisely dispenses with any mystery pertaining to the culprit’s identity within the first few minutes. Following the murder of a groundskeeper in a standard cold open, Vanessa and her assistant Anthony (Luke Nieves) arrive on the groom’s secluded island to set up and almost immediately note that things aren’t as they should be.

As Vanessa’s best friend/client Rachel (Meghan Carrasquillo) arrives, Vanessa discovers boxes with her name on them with keepsakes that identify Rachel’s ex as the villain.

Henriksen plays the Facinelli's father in On Fire. When he first encountered the veteran actor during filming, he attributed Henriksen's demeanor on set, which seemed scatterbrained and unfocused, to his age advancement. Facinelli, by his own admission, was wrong. "With Lance, it's funny because I remember meeting him, and his character is kind of...not senile, but he'll go off on tangents. On Fire Review | Mother Nature Strikes Again in a Formulaic Disaster Movie
Image
You don't need to live in California to know there's a plethora of deadly wildfires consuming the U.S. Take Hawaii, for example, which has been in the news these past months for the deadly flames that have completely devastated Maui and other parts. Oregon is a popular "hotspot" as well, but California comes to mind most of the time, which is probably why Peter Facinelli and Nick Lyon's new film, On Fire, takes place in the Golden State. Disaster movies have been getting produced for decades now, with some being over the top and some being more thoughtful and groundbreaking. On Fire comes off as pretty surface-level, with a formulaic plot structure, but a couple memorable supporting performances help keep the end result moving.

Heartfelt but By-the-Numbers

Taking place in a harmless California town up in the mountains called Colburn, On Fire centers on a dad in distress...

SAG-AFTRA has approved an interim agreement for On Fire since the film is being released by Cineverse, an independent, non-amptp affiliated distributor. He spoke to Cbr about the numerous themes interwoven into what aims to be the next great disaster movie.

On Fire - Jennie Kermode - 18636
Peter Facinelli
In November 2018, the seventh deadliest wildfire in US history ripped through California and destroyed the entire town of Paradise, along with numerous other homes. A combination of wind changes and unexpected behaviour on the part of the fire meant that evacuations happened only at the last minute and many people who had thought themselves safe abruptly faced danger. Given the location of this event, it embedded itself deep in the psyche of many in he state’s filmmaking community. Five years later, Peter Facinelli and Nick Lyon’s film attempts to capture something of the experience of those directly involved.

Facinelli plays Dave, a construction company owner who lives in a comfortable woodland trailer home with his father George (Lance Henriksen), teenage son Clay (Asher Angel) and wife Sarah (Fiona Dourif), who is eight months pregnant. George is experiencing mental decline and uses it as an excuse to bully Sarah,...

Bush Guides, Night Cameras Help BBC America’s ‘Dynasties’ Catch Unique Moments
Just getting to one of the locations of BBC America wildlife documentary series “Dynasties” — presented by David Attenborough and following the lives of endangered animals — requires an 11-hour flight from London to Johannesburg, a two-hour connection to Harare, Zimbabwe, an hourlong chartered Cessna 206 trip to Mana Pools National Park airstrip and an hour’s drive to the banks of the Zambezi River.

Imagine the logistics of making the trek with 50 bags of gear.

Difficulties abound. Authorities will “go through every single piece of equipment, every battery you have, to match serial numbers,” says Nick Lyon, director of the series’ “Painted Wolf” episode. He adds that producers need to be aware of certain restrictions, including the prohibition of camera equipment of American military origin.

Lyon and executive producer Mike Gunton were not allowed to bring in the latest HD thermal cameras, which they were going to use for night shoots. Instead,...
