Sofia Coppola’s ’Marie Antoinette’ Costumes Were Inspired by an “Enormous Box of Macarons”
Image
As Oscar winning costume designer Milena Canonero faced the tall task of creating the looks for Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, the filmmaker happened to arrive in Italy with a gift from France.

“We decided to make own costumes, and not rent them. We made them in a workshop that we set up in Rome,” Canonero recalled on Friday during a Cartier masterclass conversation presented during the Venice Film Festival. “Sofia came to visit and arrived with an enormous box of macarons. Everybody knows them now, but in those days they were quite new, especially in Italy. In a very gentle way, she did not say that it was going to be the palette, but rather, ‘I really like these colors.’”

Canonero got the hint and used those colors as a “principal focus” for the entire 2006 period piece starring Kirsten Dunst in the title role as France’s rebellious queen.

Sofia Coppola & Costume Designer Milena Canonero Talk Long Connection & Collaboration On ‘Marie Antoinette’: “She’s Like An Aunt To Me” – Venice
Image
Sofia Coppola and renowned costume designer Milena Canonero – who won Oscars for her work on Barry Lyndon, Chariots of Fire, Marie Antoinette and The Grand Budapest Hotel – kicked off Cartier’s annual program of conversations on the art and craft of cinema at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.

The pair went behind the scenes of their decades-long connection which began when Francis Ford Coppola took over direction of 1984 musical film The Cotton Club from Bob Evans, who in turn had replaced Robert Altman.

Canonero, who was attached to the film prior to Coppola’s arrival, said she had been elated when the director decided to keep most of the already hired craftspeople on the project.

“I met Milena when I was 11 or 12 years old on my father’s film The Cotton Club,” recalled Coppola. “I would always love to come to the studio after school and see what they were making.

In the Nguyen Kitchen Review: The Sweet and Sour Symphony of a Parisian Dream
Stéphane Ly-Cuong
In Stéphane Ly-Cuong’s delightful debut, In the Nguyen Kitchen, the dreams are as big and bright as a Technicolor musical, but reality bites with the chill of a supermarket’s frozen food aisle. The film introduces us to Yvonne Nguyen, a French-Vietnamese actress and singer whose ambitions of stage stardom are stalled.

Instead of a Parisian theater, her stage is a local grocery store, where she sings jingles to promote Vietnamese spring rolls. Her life takes another downturn when her boyfriend, tired of her artistic pursuits, ends their relationship. This leaves Yvonne with little choice but to move back into her mother’s apartment, located above the family’s Vietnamese restaurant.

Well, the reviews for Meghan Markle’s second season of “With Love, Meghan” are in, and it should come as no surprise that they are scathing.

“Once there was a girl. She had a passion for the shining stars of bygone times, but she was also drawn to the gutter. This strange encounter leads to an offbeat, unique friendship forming. For Paulette, it is an attempt to form more friendships with men as she is hung up on the breakup with her girlfriend, Margarita (Margot Joseph). For Paul, it is to get closer to...

Kirsten Dunst & Sofia Coppola To Reunite For Fifth Film Collaboration
Image
Longtime collaborators Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola are reportedly teaming up for another movie soon. The pair's most famous projects are 2006's Marie Antoinette and 1999's The Virgin Suicides, though their most recent ones are 2013's The Bling Ring and 2017's The Beguiled.

Without Dunst, Coppola received great acclaim for Lost in Translation, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Coppola won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture for this project. Dunst, meanwhile, is also known for starring in Spider-Man, Interview with the Vampire, Little Women, and, more recently, Melancholia.

Dunst just gave an interview with Town & Country Magazine, during which she mentioned that she has read the script for Coppola's next project. Coppola is coming from the critically acclaimed drama Priscilla, an adaptation of Priscilla Presley's memoir. Referring to the interview with Dunst, journalist Mickey Rapkin said:

Kirsten Dunst Would Star in ‘Minecraft 2’ to Make a Pile of Cash: ‘Maybe I Can Just Make a Movie Where I Don’t Lose Money?’
Image
Kirsten Dunst is well known for teaming up with acclaimed directors, from Sofia Coppola to Lars von Trier (“Melancholia”), Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Alex Garland (“Civil War”) and upcoming turns in new films by Derek Cianfrance (“Roofman”) and Ruben Östlund (“The Entertainment System Is Down”). But sometimes, Dunst just wants to make money.

Speaking to Town & Country magazine for a new cover story, the Oscar nominee made the surprise revelation that she would happily star in “Minecraft 2.” Why? “Because her kids loved the first one and because she’d like to make a pile of cash,” the publication summarized, with Dunst adding herself: “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?”

“A Minecraft Movie,” headlined by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, dominated the spring box office with $955 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far. Despite largely negative reviews,...

Prince William And Kate Middleton Accused Of Acting Greedy
Image
Prince William and Kate Middleton are once again being accused of acting greedy. That’s because there’s a new report that says the Prince and Princess of Wales are thinking about moving into For Belvedere, which would give them much more space for their family, which includes their three children.

Prince William And Kate Middleton Accused Of Acting Greedy

One source close to the situation even put it this way, “Well, the first thing that has to be said is that this is just a rumor.”

“William and Catherine have been so set on giving their children a more ‘normal’ upbringing than royal youngsters before them that it’s hard to imagine them wanting to move to what is, in effect, a castle — albeit it a relatively small one.”

The tipster also added, “However, it may well be that they feel they are outgrowing Adelaide Cottage – four bedrooms for...

Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale Inspired ‘Emily in Paris’ Costume Choices
Image
When “Emily in Paris” costume designer Marylin Fitoussi learned that Season 4 of the Netflix series would take its titular character to Italy, she saw it as a perfect opportunity to pay homage to her love for black-and-white films of the 1940s and 1950s — and pay tribute to such cinema Italiano stars as Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale.

At the end of Season 4, Emily (Lily Collins) heads to Rome and finds herself enamored with the city and with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). To reflect that, Fitoussi took a more romantic approach to Emily’s outfits so that she’s “more relaxed and forgets about her Instagram for a bit.”

Emily in Rome, in love. Her costumes reflected this enamored side. Giulia Parmigiani/Netflix

“In many Italian movies, you’ll see polka-dot prints,” Fitoussi adds. “Sophia Loren wore several dresses with black-and-white polka dots, or the reverse. So I said, maybe we can play with polka dots.

Four-time Academy Award winner Milena Canonero was honored with the Locarno Film Festival’s Vision Award on August 10, recognizing a career that spans landmark collaborations from Stanley Kubrick to Wes Anderson and Francis Ford Coppola. Festival materials also noted that she would introduce Megalopolis during the event.

The Vision Award, presented by Ticinomoda, spotlights behind-the-camera artists whose craft has shaped film language; recent recipients have ranged from sound designers to editors and visual effects innovators. Locarno said Canonero’s honor acknowledges the influence of her designs across decades and genres.

Image
Milena Canonero, the legendary Italian costume designer known for her collaborations with the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty and others, made a rare public speaking appearance in Switzerland, in which she provided insight into her career.

During a talk at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, where she received this year’s Vision Award on Sunday evening, Canonero recalled her first meeting with Anderson at the Chateau Marmont to discuss The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. “He was really friendly and open-minded,” she said, according to a live translation. “Of course, I was familiar with his movies, including the very early ones. So I was very happy to get to know him.”

Different directors have different focus areas, of course. “Wes is very much involved with the look of his characters,” the costume design legend highlighted. “Objects, decorations, and all...

Exclusive: First trailer for Gerard Johnson’s gritty London thriller ‘Odyssey’ unleashed
Image
The official trailer and poster for ‘Odyssey,’ the highly anticipated new film from acclaimed British writer-director Gerard Johnson, has arrived — and it’s every bit as stylish, gritty, and darkly hilarious as fans of his previous work might expect.

Led by a ferocious, career-defining performance from Muscle’s Polly Maberly, the film made its explosive World Premiere earlier this year at SXSW, and is gearing up for its UK debut at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and a high-profile London premiere at FrightFest later this month, ahead of a nationwide theatrical release.

Maberly stars as Natasha Flynn, a coke-fuelled London estate agent whose high-end façade is crumbling under the weight of addiction, debt, and desperation. When a pair of shady loan sharks offer her quick cash to stash a kidnapped rival agent, Natasha dives headfirst into a nightmare journey through the capital’s seediest corners — one laced with menace, mayhem,...

Did You Know? This Brother-Sister Duo Made History By Bagging Oscars In The Same Year: A First In Academy Awards History!
Image
This pair of siblings working under the MGM banner became the first ever pair of siblings to win an Oscar in the same year.(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Spotting close and extended families of a star in the entertainment industry is not a new phenomenon. From legacy families like the Kapoors to the new age stars like the Panday siblings, actors have given birth to actors. When working in the same field as your family, there is an added edge of competition. Winning the top spot, getting all the right accolades and fame before anyone else does, also becomes a matter of prestige. Hollywood is no stranger to legacy families and sibling pairs working together alongside each other or as contemporaries. There are several sibling pairs and families who have won an award, but there was one particular brother-sister duo who became the first sibling pair to win an Oscar each in the same year.

Thierry Ardisson, Trailblazing French TV Journalist, Host and Producer Known as the ‘Man in Black,’ Dies at 76
Image
Thierry Ardisson, a staple of the French television landscape for nearly four decades who ruffled feathers as an iconoclastic journalist, host and producer of often explosive talk shows, died on Tuesday from liver cancer. He was 76.

His wife, Audrey Crespo Mara, who is also a TV host and journalist, confirmed the news to French news agency Afp. “Thierry passed away as he lived: a courageous and free man,” she said in a statement. “His children and mine were united around him until his last breath.”

Nicknamed “the man in black” because of his invariable black outfits, Ardisson broke ground in France with his first major talk show, “Tout le monde en parle,” which would air late every Saturday night on France Télévisions Channel France 2 and became a hit in the late 1990s. Unlike many other TV hosts who often seemed complacent, Ardisson was known for doing in-depth research on his guests to find blind spots,...

6 actors you probably forgot were in Star Wars movies
Image
The Star Wars universe is vast. Between trilogies, spin-offs, and countless stormtroopers in every piece of canon content, it’s easy to forget who’s under all those helmets. Over the decades, the franchise has become a who’s who of cameos and pre-fame appearances.

Here are six actors you may have forgotten are part of the Star Wars universe (number five is my favorite!)

1. Keira Knightley – The Phantom Menace (1999)

Before she broke out with Bend It Like Beckham and Pirates of the Caribbean, Keira Knightley played Sabé, Queen Amidala’s decoy handmaiden in The Phantom Menace. Thanks to Natalie Portman and Knightley’s striking resemblance, even Knightley’s own mother had trouble telling them apart on screen. Knightley famously forgot her Star Wars role, so don’t worry if you did, too.

2. Daniel Craig – The Force Awakens (2015)

Yes, James Bond is technically in Star Wars. Daniel Craig has a...

Tom Cruise Is Learning From His Mistake From Katie Holmes Relationship While He Tries to Win Ana de Armas’ Heart (Report)

Tom Cruise is reportedly trying hard to win over Ana de Armas while ensuring that he doesn’t repeat the same mistakes that he made with Katie Holmes. Cruise commits to his relationships just like he does with his stunts. But that didn’t always work well for the actor. He became a laughing stock when he expressed his excitement about dating Holmes publicly.

A source has revealed to RadarOnline that Cruise has made the Ballerina star the center of his universe. But he isn’t going to jump on couches over the relationship, like that one embarrassing moment during Oprah’s show two decades ago. The source shared:

He is only keeping it cool publicly because he became such a laughingstock back when he showed his insane excitement over Katie [Holmes], but make no mistake, he’s absolutely giddy about Ana, to the point where it’s hard for him...

Sofia Coppola Says Movie Violence Is ‘Overdone’ and ‘Upsetting’ When ‘There’s So Much Gun Violence’ in the U.S.
Image
Don’t expect Sofia Coppola to jump on the horror movie bandwagon anytime soon. While speaking at a masterclass at the Biarritz’ Nouvelles Vagues Festival, Coppola said she “[doesn’t] really like violent films.”

“There’s so much gun violence in my country,” she said. “It’s really hard to see [those] movies. Old cowboys are cool, but just the way [violence] is overdone now is upsetting.”

Coppola, who flew from New York to be the guest of honor at the third edition of Nouvelles Vagues Festival in the picturesque south-western town of Biarritz, cited Martin Scorsese as a filmmaker whose movies have violence that serves a narrative purpose. “I love Scorsese, so there are moments for it,” she said, adding that “violent themes can be interesting or insinuating. But really, gory, not so much for me.”

The effortlessly chic Coppola also reminisced about her childhood, her early passion for fashion and photography, and...

‘Real Time’: Bill Maher Blames Dems’ Election Loss & Andrew Tate’s Rise On TV’s “Endless Parade Of Eye-Roll, Short-Bus Dads”

As Bill Maher wrapped up his 700th episode of Real Time, he got on his soapbox to mourn the supposed loss of masculinity in media.

During Friday’s ‘New Rules’ segment, the comedian launched into a rant about manhood and blamed film and television’s “endless parade of eye-roll, short-bus dads” for Democrats losing the election.

“Let’s make the Father’s Day we just celebrated the last one that takes place in a culture where dads have become such punching bags, literally the last demographic group that TV, ads and movies can still depict as clueless, useless dipshits, basically just another child mom has to look after,” he launched into his sermon.

He blamed the 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby for the decline of masculinity in culture, and want as far as to link sitcoms like Married with Children, The Simpsons, Modern Family and Malcolm in the Middle,...

The Rose of Versailles Review: One Heroine Can’t Save the Monarchy
Image
The years leading up to the French Revolution offer a cinematic canvas of unparalleled drama, a world of gilded palaces and public discontent. The Rose of Versailles dives headfirst into this turmoil, but through a unique lens. It centers not on one, but two remarkable women whose lives intersect as history unravels.

We meet the young Austrian princess Marie Antoinette, destined to become the infamous queen of France. But her shadow and sworn protector is the film’s fictional heart: Commander Oscar François de Jarjayes.

Raised from birth as a man to secure her family’s military legacy, Oscar serves in the Royal Guard, her identity a known secret in the court. The film sets the stage for a grand story of duty, love, and identity, played out against the backdrop of a society about to tear itself apart.

Artistry in the Age of Excess

Sarah Adler in Dead Language (2025)
Enjoy the silence by Anne-Katrin Titze
Sarah Adler in Dead Language (2025)
Dead Language directors Mihal Brezis and Oded Binnun with music producer/99 Records founder Ed Bahlman and Anne-Katrin Titze on Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence: “We couldn't imagine any other song there.”

Reshuffling the syntax of couple behaviour may be the only way to bring the relationship back from the dead. This is a film of missed appointments and of 'letters' sent, to paraphrase Lacan, that despite all odds, always arrive at their destination.

Mihal Brezis and Oded Binnun’s fearlessly original and smart Dead Language (a highlight in the Viewpoints programme of the 24th edition of the Tribeca Festival), evolving out of their Oscar-nominated short, Aya, begins in the arrival area of an airport, where Aya, instead of picking up her husband Aviad pretends to be the driver for the unwitting Mr. Esben (Ulrich Thompsen of Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen), who is in Jerusalem on a...

‘Twin Peaks’ Returns to Rimini: Italian Global Series Festival Honors David Lynch’s Legacy
Image
In 1993, David Lynch quietly traveled to Italy to pay his final respects to his Rimini-born inspiration, Federico Fellini.

Three decades later, the Rimini-based Italian Global Series Festival (Igsf) will honor the late American master with louder fanfare, presenting a tribute called “The Light of David Lynch” that includes a screening of the “Twin Peaks” pilot in a 600-seat open-air venue just 100 meters from the theater where Fellini first discovered cinema.

“Lynch and Fellini even shared the same birthday, January 20,” explains Igsf artistic director Marco Spagnoli. “Being in Fellini’s city, it felt essential for our inaugural edition to pay tribute to that profound cinematic, ethical, and spiritual connection between these two great artists.”

The tribute, organized by Carlo Chatrian, director of Italy’s National Film Museum and former chief of the Berlin and Locarno film festivals, and Dennis Lim, head of the New York Film Festival and Lynch biographer, centers...

Marie Antoinette Season 2 Review: The Queen’s Descent into Chaos
Image
The second season of Marie Antoinette returns viewers to a French court teetering on a precipice, a decade into the reign of Louis XVI (Louis Cunningham) and his queen, Marie Antoinette (Emilia Schüle). The opulence of Versailles stands in stark, unsettling contrast to the palpable misery gripping the kingdom.

France shivers through one of the coldest winters recorded, its treasury depleted by foreign conflicts, its people seething with a discontent that grows louder with each passing day. Within this pressure cooker, the young monarchs appear increasingly isolated.

Marie Antoinette, portrayed with a keen desire for popular affection, finds her every gesture scrutinized, her attempts at connection often curdling into further public resentment. The initial episodes lay a path strewn with ominous portents, signaling a period where the crown’s legitimacy will face its most severe tests, and personal desires clash ruinously with the demands of a nation in turmoil.

Whispers...

Sofia Coppola Says Maude Apatow’s Fandom of ‘The Virgin Suicides’ Proved the Lasting Legacy of the Iconic Film
Image
Sofia Coppola is recalling the moment she realized “The Virgin Suicides” was an iconic film — and it’s all thanks to Leslie Mann and Maude Apatow.

Coppola told i-d during the 25th anniversary of her 2000 directorial debut that she had no idea Gen Z was aware of the film until she was on set for her 2013 feature “The Bling Ring.” During production, actress Mann cited how her daughter was a fan of the film. Mann has two daughters with husband and collaborator Judd Apatow: Maude and Iris Apatow. At the time of “The Bling Ring,” the eldest Maude would have been 16, the same age as the Lisbon sisters in Coppola’s adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel. (Coppola had previously confirmed to Vogue that Maude Apatow is fan.)

When asked if “a fan or someone [has] come up to you and said something that’s really left a mark about your...

Cannes Close-Up: Dominik Moll and Léa Drucker on ‘Case 137’ and the yellow vest protests
Image
In this edition of Screen’s Cannes Close-Up interview series, director Dominik Moll and actress Léa Drucker explain how they worked the real-life yellow vest protests into their Cannes Competition title Case 137.

The police corruption drama is set against the backdrop of the 2018 Paris protests against economic inequality, and Moll incorporated real-life footage into film.

“It’s not a documentary, it’s a work of fiction,” says Moll. “But the images that we see from the yellow vest movement is partly footage that we shot ourselves and recreated, and also partly footage from journalists at that time.”

Drucker also...

‘The President’s Cake’ Review: Hasan Hadi’s Warm and Heart-Tugging Tale Sends Dutiful Kids on an Odyssey in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq
Image
Stay at a film festival long enough, and you will eventually notice certain shared themes and connective tissues between movies. Even then, the happenstance link between Hasan Hadi’s compassionate directorial debut “The President’s Cake” and Fatih Akin’s quiet epic “Amrum” is something of a shock, as both movies send their young protagonists onto grand quests to gather around basic supplies like flour, sugar, eggs and so on at times of tragic scarcity born under dictators.

Then again, as specific as this plot similarity is, perhaps its emergence shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, considering the current, war-torn state of the world that’s once again victimizing children. Filmmakers trying to navigate our present-day realities would dig into their own pasts and memories. With “The President’s Cake,” Hadi has done exactly that, closely following his lead-character Lamia.

It’s Iraq in the 1990s — as Hadi remembers it.
