Elizabeth Banks to Play Karen Read in Limited Series for Prime Video
Image
Elizabeth Banks will executive produce and star in a new limited series about the Karen Read trial.

The project, which is based on the Law & Crime and Wondery podcast “Karen” and written by showrunner Justin Noble, explores society’s obsession with true crime, the allure of conspiracy and the deepening crisis of trust in our institutions.

“When a Boston police officer is found dead in the snow, all eyes are on his girlfriend, Karen Read,” the logline states. “Fracturing a community, some believe she is guilty of first-degree murder, but others believe she’s the victim of a sweeping cover-up by state and local law enforcement.”

In addition to Banks and Noble,...

Image
Elizabeth Banks will play Karen Read in a limited series about the controversial trial in development at Prime Video and Warner Bros. Television, Variety has confirmed.

The series is based on the podcast “Karen,” which chronicled the true-crime saga of a woman accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer who was found dead in the snow. Read was on trial for murder and a slew of other alleged crimes, while her defense argued she was framed — the victim of a cover-up involving law enforcement agents. Read was ultimately acquitted of murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene. She was convicted of drunken driving and sentenced to one year of probation.

Justin Noble, the co-creator of “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” will serve as showrunner of the series, executive producing alongside David E. Kelley, who is best known for his courtroom dramas “Boston Legal,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal” and Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.

Charlie Hall Cast In Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ Anthology Series About Ed Gein
Image
Exclusive: Charlie Hall has joined the recurring cast of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s upcoming new season of Netflix’s “Monster” anthology series, which centers on murderer and suspected serial killer Ed Gein, played by Charlie Hunnam.

Known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, Gein confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. He is suspected of having been responsible for the deaths of others, including his brother Henry, but the authorities were unable to connect him definitively to any of the cases.

Gein’s story inspired the Leatherface character in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and largely inspired Robert Bloch’s novel Psycho, which was later adapted to film with Alfred Hitchcock directing. He...

Universal & The Lego Group Developing Comedy ‘Inner Child’ From James Morosini
Image
Exclusive: Inner Child, an elevated Lego comedy from James Morosini, is in early development at Universal and The Lego Group, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Lego and Universal declined comment, but sources close to the project said Lego Group will produce. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The origin story here is interesting in that the project originated as an original spec from Morosini that had nothing to do with the Lego universe. It was originally a bit of an edgier concept, written for live-action. But since falling for the script and snapping it up, execs at Universal and Lego Group have elected to take the material in a direction, visually and otherwise, befitting the Lego brand.

First introduced in Denmark in 1932, the Lego brand has continued to engage audiences around the world by expanding into feature films more than a decade ago. In 2020, Universal closed a five-year exclusive...

Reneé Rapp Isn’t Happy But She’s Hot on ‘Bite Me’
Image
Reneé Rapp has drastically switched up her game since her excellent 2023 debut, Snow Angel — and it’s a glorious noise to hear. She spends her second album, Bite Me, enjoying what a rowdy-and-proud mess she is, for one of the year’s most delightful pop blowouts, an uproarious 33-minute celebration of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. It’s her first album since coming out, and damn, she’s making up for lost time, with bangers full of Hollywood parties and thirsty groupies and hangovers and the mad dash to the next club.

Chasing Gen Z: Why Prime Video Is Loving YA After the Genre’s Collapse on Linear TV
Image
It’s been nearly two decades since soapy teen shows like “Gossip Girl,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “One Tree Hill” reigned on the CW and Freeform, but on Amazon’s Prime Video this summer, it’s 2007 all over again. While linear TV has largely abandoned the young adult genre, Prime Video is leaning into it in an attempt to woo Gen Z and millennials with bestseller adaptations and teen drama galore.

It all starts with Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Prime Video’s crown jewel of YA (young adult) programming and streaming hit that’s wrapping up its third and final season this fall. Hoping to grab the baton are “We Were Liars” from “Vampire Diaries” creator Julie Plec and “Overcompensating” from social media comedian-turned-tv writer Benito Skinner, as well as a slew of upcoming TV adaptations of buzzy novels “Fourth Wing,” “Off Campus” and YA series...

Craving more messy romance after 'Too Much'? Start here
Image
If you’re still not over Lena Dunham’s latest, these picks will ease the heartbreak.

Rom-coms are my go-to genre — always have been. There’s just something about falling in love with a show at the same time the characters are falling for each other. And when it ends? Total heartbreak. That’s the vibe with “Too Much,” Lena Dunham’s new series about a heartbroken American and a low-key London musician who find themselves tangled in a love story neither of them planned for. It’s quiet, honest, and a little awkward (in the best way), with the kind of emotional pull that sneaks up on you. So if that ending left you feeling adrift, here are a few more shows that might just fill the gap and get you back in love.

Too Much July 10, 2025

When a heartbroken New Yorker moves to London hoping for a love story,...

HBO Max’s TV library is stacked -- and still an awesome deal at $10 per month
Image
It’s the one streamer I plan to keep as long as I love great TV.

I’ve been subscribed to just about every streamer for years, and HBO Max has always been one of my favorites. It’s home to some of the best TV shows ever made, across almost every genre. Larry David is basically my personal idol, so the fact that it houses “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — a show that’s shaped my comedic sensibility as much as “Seinfeld” did before it — already makes it special to me.

Now that the service has rebranded back to HBO Max as of July 2025, I thought it was the perfect time to take a closer look at its TV series library, much like I did for Apple TV+ last week. I’ll be breaking down what HBO Max does best, where its lineup feels thin, how often new shows drop, and...

Reneé Rapp: ‘I’m Really F-cking Stubborn and Very Defiant’
Image
In some ways, Reneé Rapp was burnt out before she even really got started. The singer-songwriter-actor’s 2023 debut album, Snow Angel, preceded a major tour, a starring role in the blockbuster movie musical adaptation of Mean Girls and the end of her run on the hit HBO series The Sex Lives of College Girls. After all of that, Rapp, 25, took some time for herself while making her fun, bratty, propulsive new record, Bite Me, in the process. Now that she’s on the hamster wheel of pop stardom again, she...

Terrestrial Fantasia Review — Disappointing Sci-Fi Thriller Fails to Take Off
Image
Filmmaker Steve Pink is best known for his high-concept comedies like the Hot Tub Time Machine movies, as well as having penned turn-of-the-century cult classics Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. Despite conceptual promise, his latest film, Terrestrial, ultimately underwhelms because of a script that thinks it’s smarter than it is and characters that are just incredibly difficult to get behind.

Terrestrial Review

The film follows a newly successful science fiction author who invites some of his college friends for a weekend in his mansion, although things may not be exactly as they seem. Considering the director and cast, you’d be fair to assume that this would be a highly comedic flick, but it’s ultimately very light on laughs, sharing much more in common with the thriller genre than your typical comedy.

Terrestrial is the type of movie that is constructed around one twist. If you find...

Allison Williams On The Girls Resurgence And Love For Marnie 10 Years Later: "People Vehemently Hated Her"
Image
It has been nearly 10 years since Girlsended, and the show is already beginning to see a resurgence. Led by Lena Dunham (Hannah Helene Horvath), the show starred four women who struggle to manage their lives in the heart of New York City. Dunham starred alongside Allison Williams (Marnie), Jemima Kirke (Jessa), Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna), and Adam Driver (Adam Sackler). The show ran from 2012 to 2017 and featured over 60 episodes across Girls' six seasons. While it entered dormancy after the series ended, it has quietly begun to experience a revival, as new audiences are discovering the show.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Williams opened up about the renewed interest in the series. Williams believes that, because older viewers are now "in the safety of their adulthood," they can "enjoy watching the chaos" in a way that they could not before. New audiences, however, are "watching a version of their...

Mindy Kaling Explains Why She’s Been Staying Behind the Camera
Image
After making a name for herself as a writer and star of The Office and the creator and lead of The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling took a step back from the spotlight. She has had some acting roles since, but she has stuck mostly to producing work, having co-created the TV shows Champions, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and Running Point. In fact, her most recent onscreen role came in 2023. But Kaling knows a more substantial return to acting is overdue. “Never Have I Ever, a show literally about an Indian American family in Southern California, and if I wasn’t on that — what’s wrong with me?” Kaling said during a Paley Media Council Series conversation last week, per The Hollywood Reporter. Kaling explained that she’s been a bit camera shy because her producing ventures have panned out well.

Mindy Kaling Reveals Plans to Act Again and Ben Affleck’s Reaction to Her 2002 Play ‘Matt & Ben’
Image
Mindy Kaling sat down for a Paley Media Council Series conversation on Thursday, touching on her two-decade career in Hollywood and what she wants to do next.

The star, who got her start as a writer and supporting actress on The Office, said her original goal was “if I could just be a staff writer on even a terrible show, even if I could just be in the WGA and have health insurance and live in Los Angeles, I would be happy for the rest of my life.” As she became more successful, though, she wanted to produce and be No. 1 on the call sheet, admitting her idea of success “keeps changing and so I’m never happy, and that’s the writer’s disease.”

What got her on The Office in the first place was a play she wrote in 2002 called Matt & Ben, where “I played Ben Affleck and...

The Substance (2024)
Hal & Harper: The indie TV series with Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo gets picked up by Mubi
The Substance (2024)
Mubi is continuing to expand its business after picking up such projects as last year’s The Substance. According to Deadline, the company has now picked up the rights to the independently produced TV drama series Hal & Harper. The show comes from actor/filmmaker Cooper Raiff, whose resume includes Cha Cha Real Smooth. The business model for indie television is still testing the waters, but Mubi’s acquisition is a big win for the experimental process. The studio is set to stream the show in the U.S. and France, and it has earned good buzz after premiering at Sundance this year.

The series stars Raiff along with Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo. Per Deadline, Hal & Harper “centers on two codependent siblings Hal (Raiff) and Harper (Reinhart), who are facing big life changes. The pair’s intimacy is built on a lifetime of inside jokes and shared pains,...

Mubi Acquires Cooper Raiff’s Independently Produced Sundance Drama Series ‘Hal & Harper’
Image
Exclusive: Mubi has acquired rights to Hal & Harper, the acclaimed indie TV series from actor-filmmaker Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), for streaming in the U.S. and France, on the heels of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The eight-episode family drama, co-starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo, will premiere exclusively on the service this fall.

Lionsgate financed the series, handled the sale and distributes it worldwide.

This marks another win for independently produced television at a time when the business model is still being tested. Other recent examples of indie series that have gone on to significant streaming deals include Shane Gillis’ hit comedy Tires, which just returned for a second season, as well as Mark Duplass’ Penelope, both of which wound up at Netflix.

Hal & Harper marks the latest acquisition in a notable expansion into series this year for Mubi, following recent acquisitions...

New cast members have been revealed for the upcoming series 9-1-1: Nashville. As previously announced, the show will feature Chris O'Donnell as one of the leading actors, and now more of his co-stars are confirmed.

Per Variety, 9-1-1: Nashville has added cast members Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, and Hunter McVey. Along with O'Donnell, they are joining other previously announced series stars, including Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

Kilgore has been cast as "Taylor," a firefighter who also happens to be an "incredible singer." It's likely that her Tony and Grammy Award nominations helped her get the role, which she earned from starring in the Broadway rendition of Once on This Island. She also starred in the Starz TV series Power Book III: Raising Kanana, and appeared in The Village and Amazing Stories. Kilgore also has a solo album debuting this year.

Provost is reportedly playing "Ryan,...

Margaret Atwood Calls Fellow Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada Honorees “Very Hard Acts to Follow”
Image
Margaret Atwood recalls MGM’s straight-to-series order in 2016 to adapt her dystopian classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale as a Hulu series as being a touch risky.

“It was a gamble. And the gamble paid off. Anybody approaching me earlier who said we wanted to make a film about The Handmaid’s Tale, I would have said, ‘Who’s going to watch that?’” she told the second annual Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada gala at the Ritz Carlton in Toronto on Thursday.

“When it came out, a certain number of people felt it was illuminating because, surely, the United States would never, ever do such things,” the acerbic Canadian author, poet and activist said as she picked up the Icon Award at the Ritz Carlton. She talked about the success in adapting her 1985 dystopian novel just as Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has reached the climax for its sixth and final season,...

How Reneé Rapp Says Her Mom Manifested Her Becoming a “Pop Star”
Image
Reneé Rapp’s mother seemingly knew her daughter was destined for pop stardom even before she was born.

The singer-actress recently shared on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast how her mom, Denise Rapp, manifested her music career when choosing her name.

“My mom chose my first and last name to be, well, okay, arguably chose my first and last name to both have [two letter R’s],” the “Too Well” artist said. “She was like, ‘Alliteration, just in case she wants to be a pop star’ before I was born.”

Though Rapp quipped that the move was “conceited,” she confessed that she’s actually “obsessed with the way [her mother] did it,” adding, “I’m like, thank you, God.”

Poehler, seemingly impressed by the coincidence, responded, “She gave you a pop star name just in case, because Reneé Rapp is a huge pop star name.” Rapp added, “It’s a really good one!”

‘Adults’ Is a Hangout Cringe Comedy for the Next Generation
Image
Into every generation, a hangout sitcom is born — light on plot, and heavy on the chemistry of a group of young adults spending way too much time together in the big city. Gen X had Friends. The millennials had too many to count, including New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, and Happy Endings. Gen Z hasn’t quite had its own moment yet, in part because most show creators are at least in their thirties, in part because the TV business assumes that most of Gen Z is getting their video on nontraditional platforms.

Jonathan Groff, Bobby Darin And The Art Of Doing It All – Deadline Tony Award Q&a
Image
This June, Jonathan Groff will have the rare chance to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years. If he repeats last year’s triumph for Merrily We Roll Along with one for this year’s Just In Time, he’ll join a very exclusive club of six Broadway greats: Laurie Metcalf, Judith Light, Stephen Spinella, Sandy Dennis, Gwen Verdon, and Shirley Booth.

For Groff, the two-in-a-row possibility, exciting enough, even has a hint more frisson: Just In Time, a biographical musical of Bobby Darin, marks a career first for the busy actor. “I’ve never been part of a project from its conception. Eight years ago this month, actually, Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y and I read this book called Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, written by Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby and Sandy,...
