The project, which is based on the Law & Crime and Wondery podcast “Karen” and written by showrunner Justin Noble, explores society’s obsession with true crime, the allure of conspiracy and the deepening crisis of trust in our institutions.

“When a Boston police officer is found dead in the snow, all eyes are on his girlfriend, Karen Read,” the logline states. “Fracturing a community, some believe she is guilty of first-degree murder, but others believe she’s the victim of a sweeping cover-up by state and local law enforcement.”

Elizabeth Banks will play Karen Read in a limited series about the controversial trial in development at Prime Video and Warner Bros. Television, Variety has confirmed.

The series is based on the podcast “Karen,” which chronicled the true-crime saga of a woman accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer who was found dead in the snow. Read was on trial for murder and a slew of other alleged crimes, while her defense argued she was framed — the victim of a cover-up involving law enforcement agents. Read was ultimately acquitted of murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene. She was convicted of drunken driving and sentenced to one year of probation.

Justin Noble, the co-creator of “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” will serve as showrunner of the series, executive producing alongside David E. Kelley, who is best known for his courtroom dramas “Boston Legal,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal” and Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.

Exclusive: One of the more polarizing court cases in recent memory is about to get the Hollywood treatment. Sources tell Deadline that Prime Video and Warner Bros Television are in development on a new limited series set around the Karen Read trial, with Elizabeth Banks on board to play the woman at the center of the case.

Exclusive: Charlie Hall has joined the recurring cast of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s upcoming new season of Netflix’s “Monster” anthology series, which centers on murderer and suspected serial killer Ed Gein, played by Charlie Hunnam.

Known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, Gein confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards. He is suspected of having been responsible for the deaths of others, including his brother Henry, but the authorities were unable to connect him definitively to any of the cases.

She’s signed a hundred NDAs, but Reneé Rapp still says something when asked about her departure from HBO Max‘s The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Although the Bite Me artist didn’t get into specifics about the reason for her 2023 exit from the Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble comedy-drama, she explained that she didn’t “think anybody cared” she left.

“It was just so fun. Like, it was so fun. It was awesome,” she said when broaching the topic on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “It was just so fun.”

“Did you sign an NDA?” asked host Alex Cooper, to which Rapp confirmed, “I’ve signed many, bro.”

She recalled that the cast and crew took it “totally fine” when she announced her departure.

“Sometimes you just know,” explained Rapp. “Also, nothing on a set is ever a secret. At least, it’s really hard to do that.

Renee Rapp appeared on the latest episode of “Call Her Daddy,” where she was asked why she decided to leave the HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Filmmaker Steve Pink is best known for his high-concept comedies like the Hot Tub Time Machine movies, as well as having penned turn-of-the-century cult classics Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. Despite conceptual promise, his latest film, Terrestrial, ultimately underwhelms because of a script that thinks it’s smarter than it is and characters that are just incredibly difficult to get behind.

The film follows a newly successful science fiction author who invites some of his college friends for a weekend in his mansion, although things may not be exactly as they seem. Considering the director and cast, you’d be fair to assume that this would be a highly comedic flick, but it’s ultimately very light on laughs, sharing much more in common with the thriller genre than your typical comedy.

The film will receive its UK premiere at FrightFest in London this August. Bleecker Street will release domestically later this year.

A few days ago, the future of award-winning director Ryan Murphy’s controversial Monster series was revealed, with its recently announced fourth season set to focus on Lizzie Borden. Updated: Ryan Murphy’s FX series adaptation of “The Shards” has added a trio of actors to its cast and has been officially greenlit.

Variety has learned from sources that Igby Rigney will play a young Bret Easton Ellis in the series, with “The Shards” based on Ellis’ book of the same name. In addition, Homer James Jigme Gere will play Robert and Graham Campbell will play Thom.

The trio would star in the series alongside previously announced cast member Kaia Gerber.

Reps for FX and 20th Television declined to comment.

Per Variety, newcomers to the Devil Wears Prada 2 cast include Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), Justin Theroux (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), B.J. Novak (The Office), and Pauline Chalamet (The Sex Lives of College Girls). Broadway stars Helen J. Shen (Maybe Happy Ending) and Conrad Ricamora, as well as comedian Caleb Hearon, have also joined the cast. Details about their roles have not yet been revealed.

Additionally, it has been revealed that Tracie Thoms will return to reprise her role from the original film as Lily, the best friend of Anne Hathaway's character. Tibor Feldman is also back as Elias-Clark chairman Irv Ravitz. Streep and Hathaway are reprising their roles as well, as are Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. However, Adrian Grenier is not expected to return as Nate Cooper.

According to X account 9-1-1 News, the on-location spot is expected to receive a whopping $340,000 in renovations to transform it into a set worthy of the highly-anticipated 9-1-1 offshoot. From what we can see from the first images, the creative team certainly has their work cut out for them, but that’s the exciting part! Constructed from brick, the outside walls have all the charm that we’d expect from the new firehouse, while the inside boasts sky-high ceilings and what looks to be an office surrounded by windows.

According to Deadline, the company has now picked up the rights to the independently produced TV drama series Hal & Harper. The show comes from actor/filmmaker Cooper Raiff, whose resume includes Cha Cha Real Smooth. The business model for indie television is still testing the waters, but Mubi’s acquisition is a big win for the experimental process. The studio is set to stream the show in the U.S. and France, and it has earned good buzz after premiering at Sundance this year.

Exclusive: Mubi has acquired rights to Hal & Harper, the acclaimed indie TV series from actor-filmmaker Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), for streaming in the U.S. and France, on the heels of its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The eight-episode family drama, co-starring Lili Reinhart and Mark Ruffalo, will premiere exclusively on the service this fall.

Lionsgate financed the series, handled the sale and distributes it worldwide.

This marks another win for independently produced television at a time when the business model is still being tested. Other recent examples of indie series that have gone on to significant streaming deals include Shane Gillis’ hit comedy Tires, which just returned for a second season, as well as Mark Duplass’ Penelope, both of which wound up at Netflix.

New cast members have been revealed for the upcoming series 9-1-1: Nashville. As previously announced, the show will feature Chris O'Donnell as one of the leading actors, and now more of his co-stars are confirmed.

Per Variety, 9-1-1: Nashville has added cast members Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, and Hunter McVey. Along with O'Donnell, they are joining other previously announced series stars, including Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

Kilgore has been cast as "Taylor," a firefighter who also happens to be an "incredible singer." It's likely that her Tony and Grammy Award nominations helped her get the role, which she earned from starring in the Broadway rendition of Once on This Island. She also starred in the Starz TV series Power Book III: Raising Kanana, and appeared in The Village and Amazing Stories. Kilgore also has a solo album debuting this year.

9-1-1: Nashville is filling out its ranks with four new cast additions: Hailey Kilgore (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), Michael Provost (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Juani Feliz (Harlem) and influencer Hunter McVey have all joined ABC’s 9-1-1 offshoot in series-regular roles, TVLine has learned.

Kilgore, a Grammy and Tony Award nominee, will play firefighter Taylor, who also happens to be an incredible singer; Provost will play modern-day cowboy Ryan, also a firefighter; Feliz will play former trauma surgeon (and current adrenaline junkie) Roxie; and McVey will play a haunted bad boy who has since become a firefighter.

“9-1-1: Nashville” is continuing to build out its cast, with the upcoming ABC drama adding four new cast members.

Variety has learned that Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, and Hunter McVey have all been cast in the “9-1-1” offshoot at the broadcast network. They join previously announced cast members Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

Reneé Rapp’s mother seemingly knew her daughter was destined for pop stardom even before she was born.

The singer-actress recently shared on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast how her mom, Denise Rapp, manifested her music career when choosing her name.

“My mom chose my first and last name to be, well, okay, arguably chose my first and last name to both have [two letter R’s],” the “Too Well” artist said. “She was like, ‘Alliteration, just in case she wants to be a pop star’ before I was born.”

Though Rapp quipped that the move was “conceited,” she confessed that she’s actually “obsessed with the way [her mother] did it,” adding, “I’m like, thank you, God.”
