‘Dangerous Animals’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Hassie Harrison, Jai Courtney, Josh Heuston, Rob Carlton, Ella Newton, Liam Greinke | Written by Nick Lepard | Directed by Sean Byrne

Acclaimed Australian director Sean Byrne returns with Dangerous Animals, an inspired mash-up of two beloved horror genres, serial killer thrillers and sharksploitation. Delivering handsomely – and nastily – in both elements, it’s one of the most enjoyable genre movies of the year.

Set in present-day Surfers Paradise on Queensland’s Gold Coast, the film introduces its killer immediately, as burly fisherman Tucker (a scarily massive Jai Courtney) cheerfully stabs one of two tourists he has just taken on a Swimming-With-Sharks tour, before pushing him overboard.

Dangerous Animals then joins the film’s heroine,...

Emma Thompson Action-Thriller ‘Dead of Winter’ Picked Up by Vertigo for U.K., Ireland (Exclusive)
Image
Vertigo Releasing has acquired U.K. and Irish distribution rights to “Dead of Winter,” the action-thriller starring Emma Thompson that had its world premiere at Locarno Film Festival earlier this month.

The film, directed by Brian Kirk in his first feature since 2019’s “21 Bridges,” casts Thompson as Barb, a widowed fisherwoman who becomes trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard and accidentally discovers the kidnapping of a teenage girl. Realizing she’s the victim’s only hope, Thompson’s character must transform from ordinary woman to unlikely hero.

Reviewing the film for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote: “‘The Dead of Winter’ entertains, largely due to Thompson’s sturdy portrait of grace clad in a sensible, fleece-lined overcoat of gumption.”

Thompson also executive produced the project alongside her starring role. The cast includes Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, Laurel Marsden (“Ms. Marvel”), and Thompson’s daughter Gaia Wise (“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim...

The Canadian found footage flick, House on Eden, will be available in all territories where Shudder is available. The filmed-in-Canada horror flick, Night of the Reaper, will also be available in all territories.    Regular programming for The Last Drive-in continues and a new...

Keeper Trailer: Tatiana Maslany Tries to Survive in Longlegs Director’s Next Horror Flick
Image
Osgood Perkins‘ second horror feature of the year, Keeper, has received its first trailer, which stars Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland at the forefront. Having already delivered two major horror hits in recent memory, Longlegs and The Monkey, this movie marks his second collaboration with the Marvel star.

Although much of the story is still shrouded in mystery, the trailer offers us a glimpse at the plot, featuring a couple in a secluded cabin, which is par for the course when it comes to horror locations. However, what sets it apart is the approach to the story, which is told from dual perspectives.

Keeper Trailer Splits the Perspective Between Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland

Midway through the trailer, which sees Tatiana Maslany’s character questioning her relationship at the beginning, cuts to Rossif Sutherland’s character, who mimics the same narration and questions regarding their bond.

Maika Monroe in Longlegs: Coleccionista De Almas (2024)
Keeper, the latest Osgood Perkins horror film, gets a new teaser trailer
Maika Monroe in Longlegs: Coleccionista De Almas (2024)
Neon did a great job putting together intriguingly strange marketing material for director Osgood Perkins’ horror film Longlegs last year, and it paid off, as the film earned more than $125 million at the global box office. Over $74 million of that was the domestic haul, making that film Neon’s highest-grossing release domestically. The marketing for Perkins’ Stephen King adaptation The Monkey was less intriguing, but the movie still did fine when it was released this past February, pulling in almost $64 million worldwide. Coming up next from the Neon / Perkins collaboration is the dark trip horror movie Keeper, which is expected to reach theatres on November 14th, and Neon is once again coming up with an interesting marketing campaign. It began with the promotional video “It has no end,” then a poster for the film was unveiled, sporting the tagline “I don’t like you anymore.” But that’s not all there wass to it.

Beast of War review – a gung-ho second world war movie, with a great white twist
Kiah Roache-Turner
Kiah Roache-Turner’s latest splatterific effort is a blast, following a squadron of Australian troops who must try to survive ‘a pissed-off 20-foot fish’ in the Timor Sea

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

This year Australian shark movies have been particularly ravenous, swimming into different waters and taking a bite into other genres. Sean Byrne’s Dangerous Animals arrived in local cinemas in June, blending the creature feature and serial killer movies into one foul fishy stew, with Jai Courtney playing a psycho who feeds his victims to the sharks. And now we have Kiah Roache-Turner’s Beast of War, a second world war movie with a great white twist, which cheekily begins with a text insert declaring that it was “inspired by actual events”.

That’s cheeky because this film doesn’t exactly aspire for social realism, which will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Roache-Turner’s splatterific oeuvre.

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
The Wild, Big Swings of Dario Argento’s ‘Phenomena’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
We kicked off the summer with a look at Steven Spielberg’s classic creature feature Jaws (listen) before checking out our first Jean Rollin lesbian “vampire” movie Fascination (listen), as well as the female dominated slasher The Slumber Party Massacre (listen). Now it’s time to revisit Dario Argento (for only the second time on the pod!) with a first time look at 1985’s Phenomena.

The film stars Jennifer Connelly as Jennifer Corvino, an American girl sent to a Swiss boarding school. The girl has a mysterious ability: she can communicate with insects and even get them to do her bidding. This proves to be a wildly helpful skill when Jennifer finds herself targeted by a killer who preys on young women, including her roommate Sophie.

But who is committing the murders and why? Could it be the disabled local entomologist, Professor John McGregor (Donald Pleasence) or his chimp, Inga?...

The 8 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend on Netflix, Hulu and More
Image
This week’s streaming premieres are a healthy mix of both movies and TV shows. Three films that were released in theaters earlier this year have made their streaming and on-demand debuts this week. Netflix and Paramount+, meanwhile, have added new episodes of two wildly different, popular shows to their platform. On Friday, Netflix is also set to host the premiere of one of this summer’s biggest and most star-studded sequels.

Here are the eight best new movies and shows that you can stream this weekend.

“Dangerous Animals” (Shudder) “Dangerous Animals” (2025)

A savage mash-up of the serial killer and shark survival horror genres, director Sean Byrne’s “Dangerous Animals” is unlike any other thriller you will likely see this year. ‘Monster Island’ Shudder Review: A Creature Feature That Lacks The Horror Punch
Image
Creature features continue to be a dominant subgenre when it comes to horror. The fear and the terror that an often unknown vicious entity can introduce continues to run our imaginations wild. The 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws reminds us of the tremendous impact the subgenre has had through generations. And of course, the recent craze over Jurassic World Rebirth further reinforces that the audience still craves a good old creature horror! In recent years, the concept of the antagonist has been put to the test. Can a creature be truly evil, or are they simply misunderstood—is a prominent question that some filmmakers have dared to tackle. For example, in Sean Byrne’s Dangerous Animals, the antagonist is not really the creature, aka sharks, but a psychopath. Mike Wiluan’s Monster Island takes a similar route. Yes, there is a monster involved, but is it really villainous?...

Osgood Perkins’ Keeper teaser trailer takes audiences on a dark trip as curiosity turns to disdain
Image
Everyone is familiar with the fairytale scenario of falling in love with someone from across a crowded room. It’s in the eyes, they say. You feel that spark. It pulls you into each other’s orbit, with the rest of the story waiting to be written by fate. However, butterflies can only survive inside a stomach for so long; after some time, they’ll die, along with that initial feeling of wonder. In Osgood Perkins‘ Keeper teaser trailer, love blossoms and withers as time tarnishes what began as something beautiful.

Keeper falls under Osgood Perkins and Chris Ferguson’s new production studio, Phobos. Previously, Neon hosted a looping teaser video for Keeper on the studio’s YouTube channel. The video featured a young, unblinking individual repeatedly drawing on a notepad, the sound of their pen against paper playing like Asmr for sickos. Once in a while, the scene changes...

Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Rossif Sutherland (Possessor) star. Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals) wrote the script.

Of all the horror subgenres out there, I think killer shark horror is the hardest to get right. It’s strange since, at least on the surface (pun intended), it seems like the easiest to get right. There’s a primal kind of fear of swimming alone with such beautiful yet terrifying creatures, and at its core, that’s all a killer shark movie really needs. Yet, as a bonafide killer shark fan, it’s too easy to concede that the subgenre has been drowning as of late.

Titles like Dangerous Animals wisely subvert expectations, and The Shallows is too stylish to dismiss outright, though the subgenre has always been at a disadvantage. After Jaws, it’s impossible to come anywhere close to that classic, and the subgenre has been treading water ever since. Mostly, at least, since filmmaker Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has helmed not one,...

Scythe and the Stupid Man in Jean Rollin’s ‘Fascination’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Danny Boyle
Tits Out.

We transitioned from Pride Month discussions of Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (listen) and ’90s nostalgia in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie (listen) into summer blockbuster territory with Jaws (listen) last week. Now we’re inching the dial up a few years to discuss French director Jean Rollin‘s “lesbian vampire film” Fascination (1979).

The quotes are there because these characters, particularly the women, are much more sexually fluid, and there’s no actual vampires present (if anything this is a film about a cult!).

In case you’re unaware, Fascination is the story of a duplicitous thief named Marc (Jean-Marie Lemaire) who seeks refuge in a French castle with his stolen loot. He mistakenly believes the place is empty until he happens upon Eva (Brigitte Lahaie) and Elizabeth (Franca Maï), female lovers who allow him to hide but also tease that he must be gone by nightfall.

Karlovy Vary Film Festival Critic’s Take: Czech Cinema Triumphs and Stellan Skarsgård Makes a Splash
Image
Having a front row seat to all the goings on at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this week meant seeing some invigorating new films that, much like Cannes did just a couple months back, confronted the frequently dark and painful parts of our world in an attempt to find whatever small slivers of humanity they could. The films couldn’t always hold onto this feeling and the searching could often be more than a little fraught, though the festival’s brightest spots came from the ones that tried to do so all the same.

In particular, the best two films in the main competition were the Czech films “Broken Voices” and “Better Go Mad in the Wild,” the latter of which rightfully took home the top prize Saturday evening while the former received a special jury mention for the exciting newcomer Kateřina Falbrová. Though their recognition opened up...

Sea Goddess or Serial Killer in ‘The Drowned’
Image
Sunrise Films and Vertigo Releasing will bring Samuel Clemens’ debut feature The Drowned to digital platforms this autumn, unleashing a seaside terror rooted in Greek mythology. The film follows three art thieves who, having stolen a priceless painting, retreat to a remote coastal safe house only to discover their fourth accomplice is nowhere to be found. As suspicions mount that one of them may be responsible, an unseen presence stirs beneath the waves, turning their refuge into a prison of dread.

The Drowned premiered at London’s FrightFest Halloween earlier this year under its original title The Waterhouse. It stars Alan Calton – fresh from Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning – as the heist’s ringleader, joined by Lara Lemon of War of the Worlds: The Attack and Lily Catalifo from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Dominic Vulliamy of BBC One’s Rules of the Game appears as a suspicious accomplice,...

The horror! ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Substance’ lead Fangoria Chainsaw Awards nominations of year’s scariest offerings
Image
The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.

The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Jordan's are currently streaming on HBO Max.) Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.

With an eligibility window that ran from July 2024 to June 2025, the Chainsaw Awards also include some of last year's awards contenders, including The Substance, which tied Sinners for nominations.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ and Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ Lead Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards Nominations
Image
“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.

“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”

“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

Keeper: poster for Osgood Perkins’ latest horror film doesn’t like you anymore
Image
Neon did a great job putting together intriguingly strange marketing material for director Osgood Perkins’ horror film Longlegs last year, and it paid off, as the film earned more than $125 million at the global box office. Over $74 million of that was the domestic haul, making that film Neon’s highest-grossing release domestically. The marketing for Perkins’ Stephen King adaptation The Monkey was less intriguing, but the movie still did fine when it was released this past February, pulling in almost $64 million worldwide. Coming up next from the Neon / Perkins collaboration is the dark trip horror movie Keeper, which is expected to reach theatres by the end of the year, possibly on November 14th, and Neon is once again coming up with an interesting marketing campaign. It began with the promotional video “It has no end,” embedded above. Now, a poster for the film has been unveiled, sporting the tagline “I don’t like you anymore.

I Don’t Like You Anymore: Official Poster Introduces Osgood Perkins’ New Movie ‘Keeper’
Image
I don’t want to play in your yard, I don’t like you anymore. You’ll be sorry when you see me, sliding down our cellar door. That’s the creepy poem attached to the reveal of a brand new official poster for Keeper, an upcoming “dark trip” horror movie from Neon and director Osgood Perkins. Check out the poster for Keeper down below.

Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Rossif Sutherland (Possessor) will star in Keeper, which is shrouded in secrecy at the present moment. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

We expect Keeper will be released in theaters in late 2025.

“Keeper follows a couple as they escape for a romantic anniversary weekend at a secluded cabin. When Malcolm (Sutherland) suddenly returns to the city, Liz (Maslany) finds herself isolated and in the presence of an unspeakable evil that unveils the cabin’s horrifying secrets.”

Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals) wrote the screenplay.

AI In Music Is Already Here, But Its Lack Of Depth Hits Some Sour Notes – Guest Column
Image
Editor’s note: The promise and peril of artificial intelligence has captivated Washington D.C., Silicon Valley, Wall Street and Hollywood. Composer Michael Yezerski has taken a hands-on approach to it: The author of the score of the likes of the Oscar-winning short The Last Thing, Blindspotting (the movie and the series), Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy, this year’s Dangerous Animals and the just released Liam Neeson-starring Ice Road: Vengeance put the tech to the test, as he details in a guest column for Deadline.

The other week at a party, I was asked by a picture editor if I am feeling the threat of AI.

I honestly replied that I am not. But then he told me that he uses AI music generators in his everyday work as a picture editor for commercials and all of a sudden, I felt threatened. I found the conversation sobering,...

Commemorating a Classic in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Danny Boyle
Sympathy for Mr. Mayor.

After concluding Pride month with discussions of Danny Boyle’s modern classic 28 Days Later (listen) and the Freddy-Krueger-for-kids villain in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie (listen), we’re shifting gears into full-on summer blockbuster territory with a look at Steven Spielberg‘s juggernaut of a creature feature in Jaws (1975).

In case you’ve lived under a rock your entire life: Jaws tells the tale of a monstrous Great White Shark that has staked its claim over the beaches of Amity Island. In charge of stopping its rampage is police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), against the wishes of the island’s capitalistic mayor (Murray Hamilton). When the shark slaughters one too many people, Brody teams up with marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and crazed shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) to track it down and kill it for good.

Neuchatel Fantastic Fest Champions Genre Cinema’s Ascent from Shadow to Spotlight
Image
Set against a lakefront untouched by time, the Neuchâtel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival offers an annual snapshot of a genre landscape in motion. Holding its 24th edition from July 4 – 12, the Swiss showcase for fantastical film, Asian cinema and digital creation has evolved in tow, growing from upstart to institution as outré fare and auteurs seized ever-greater opportunities.

“We’ve heard the claim that ‘genre is leaving its ghetto’ for nearly as long as we’ve been around,” says Nifff artistic director Pierre-Yves Walder. “Of course, it was never entirely marginalized, but there simply weren’t as many high-profile films openly embracing the fantastic. That’s changing, and we have to evolve along with it.”

This year’s program shows as much. Opening with the international premiere of the sci-fi thriller “Dalloway” – with star Cécile de France on-site to kick off the festivities – this Nifff selection boasts an uncommonly high star-wattage,...

Range Studios Leaders Build on Movie Momentum After Automatik Acquisition Leads to a Banner 2024
Image
Two years ago this month, while the industry was in the thick of the dual writers and actors strikes, Range Media Partners and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger, principles of the busy production banner Automatik, decided to tie the knot. In 2024, the fledgling film and production division of Range Studios enjoyed a banner year by any measure.

Searchlight Pictures’ “A Complete Unknown” scored at the mainstream box office ($140 million worldwide) and had a strong award season ride capped by eight Oscar nominations.

Meanwhile, Neon’s “Longlegs” proved that there’s still plenty of box office gold to be mined from distinctive indie films. The horror film that finished out with $127 million in worldwide box office ($74 million domestic) also vaulted the director Osgood Perkins to a new level of industry recognition. Having that kind of career-building relationship with filmmakers is important to Kavanaugh-Jones and Berger, regardless of whether the talent is...

The Best Shark Movies That Aren't Jaws Have One Key Thing In Common
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" is one of the most commercially successful, critically beloved, and important blockbuster movies ever made. Full stop. It just turned 50 this week, and few movies that are five decades old look quite as fresh to modern audiences as this masterful, terrifying depiction of man vs. nature. Put simply, it's the best shark movie ever made -- and it's not even close.

Me saying that "Jaws" is the greatest shark movie to ever grace the silver screen is far from original, it's pretty much accepted as fact (or as close as one gets to fact when expressing a critical opinion). That being the case, it's not surprising that we've had many shark movies over the years that have tried to mimic the success of Spielberg's 1975 cinematic classic. Some have been sort of successful (like "Great White...

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium horror streaming service, turns 10 this year and has been celebrating accordingly with a year’s worth of fan events, programming, custom merchandise, and more, dubbed Shudder10.

Shudder gave the artists at Wild Heart Tattoo Parlor free reign to design flash inspired by the streaming service’s expansive catalog, and they more than delivered. Shark Thriller ‘Survive’ Acquired by Amazon MGM Studios Based on Feature Pitch
Émilie Dequenne, Andreas Pietschmann, Lisa Delamar, and Lucas Ebel in Sobreviviendo (2024)
Sharks aren’t the only threat in Survive, a new shark thriller preemptively acquired by Amazon MGM Studios based on a feature pitch, Deadline reports today.

Screenwriter Ian Levy (Pay the Ghost) will pen the script.

In Survive, “a desperate mother and her 12-year-old daughter attempt to flee from her abusive boyfriend. Their escape turns into a harrowing fight for survival after a highway crash leaves them stranded on a coastal cliff, battling not only the violent man they tried to escape but also a group of sharks circling in the waters below.”

That premise seems to continue the trend established by the recent release Dangerous Animals, which sees a serial killer employ sharks as a weapon for his ritualistic murders. There’s plenty more shark horror on the way, too. Tommy Wirkola’s Shiver swims into theaters next summer, and Hatchet filmmaker Adam Green is returning to the director...

Dangerous Animals is out now. In it, Jai Courtney plays a maniacal serial killer with a unique method of dispatching his victims: feeding them alive to hungry sharks.
