Netflix has greenlighted Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space, a near real-time docuseries following the September launch and mission of the first all-civilian flight crew aboard the SpaceX capsule. The docuseries hails from Time Studios, The Last Dance director Jason Hehir, Known and Connor Schell and Chernin Entertainment’s Words & Pictures. Additionally, Netflix will premiere StoryBots Space Adventure, a hybrid live-action animation special for kids and families to watch together before the mission.

Netflix Orders Docuseries Following All-Civilian Mission to Space in ‘Near Real-Time’
Mariya Poezzhaeva and Matvey Lykov in On - drakon (2015)
Netflix has ordered a docuseries that will follow the Inspiration4 all-civilian mission to space this September in “near real-time” before and after the mission launch, the streaming service said Tuesday.

“This September, four civilians will launch into space for a three-day trip orbiting Earth and reaching an altitude higher than that of the International Space Station (Iss),” per Netflix’s description for the project. “The SpaceX Dragon mission, dubbed Inspiration4, is the most ambitious step to date in the rapidly-developing age of civilian space exploration, making history as the first all-civilian mission to orbit.”

“Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission To Space,” which hails from “The Last Dance” director Jason Hehir, “will take viewers behind the scenes with the four crew members — from their unconventional selection and intensive months-long commercial astronaut training, through the intimate and emotional moments leading up to liftoff. The final episode, which premieres just days after the mission is completed,...

Film Review: Secret Reunion (2010) by Jang Hoon
Image
Jang Hoon, who started his career as an assistant to Kim Ki-duk, has only directed four feature films as of now. “Rough Cut” in 2008, “Secret Reunion” in 2010, “The Front Line”, in 2011 and “A Taxi Driver” in 2017. However, all of them are considered top notch, with Hung managing to combine commercial success with acclaimed reviews. This particular one also netted him the Best Film Award from the Blue Dragon Awards.

Ji-won and Han-gyoo are special agents for North and South Korea, respectively. The two of them exchange glances during a North Korean assassination attempt of Kim Jong-il’s second cousin, which fails due to Tae-soon’s betrayal. Shortly after, Han-gyoo is discharged for mishandling the case and Ji-won takes the blame for Tae-soon, subsequently going into hiding from his commander named Shadow. Six years later, Ji-won and Han-gyoo meet again and through a series of seemingly random consequences,...

‘Dragon Fury’ Review
Image
Stars: Nicola Wright, Chelsea Greenwood, Sofia Lacey, Chrissie Wunna, Richard Lovell, Rachel Roberts, Andrew Rolfe | Written by Scott Jeffrey, Rhys Wakefield | Directed by Scott Jeffrey

Dragon Fury, the third Scott Jeffrey production I’ve personally reviewed this week, is something of a departure for the prolific producer this time turning his hand to a monster movie rather than an all-out horror film – tapping into that great British tradition of dragons roaming the British Isles. Here Jeffrey directs from a script co-written with Rhys Wakefield… or is it Rhys Frake? IMDb says one thing, the films credits another – another case of “Is anyone real?” with a Scott Jeffrey production. I joke but I do feel like there’s some subterfuge at play here – as if to separate peoples mainstream work from genre filmmaking.

Dragon Fury sees a remote part of Wales abandoned for years due to radiation – no one knew why,...

Mariya Poezzhaeva and Matvey Lykov in On - drakon (2015)
About This Film

Winner of the Best Film award at the 1967 Blue Dragon, “Flame in the Valley” is a quintessential anti-war movie, and one of the best titles of the Korean Classic Film Archive. A real masterpiece, the film has it all: comedy, drama, social commentary, anti-war messages, great characters and great performances, in a package that manages to be equally entertaining and meaningful.

Synopsis

Kim Soo-yong takes the myth of Lysistrata and adapts it to a Korean setting. In a village inhabited by war widows in Jirisan Mountains during the Korean War (early 50s), the two main protagonists Jeom-rye (Ju Jeung-ryu) and Sa-wol (Do Kum-bong) live across each other. Jeom-rye stumbles upon a communist soldier, Gyoo-bok (Shin Young-kyun), who is hiding in the area and proceeds on beginning a sexual relationship with him. Sa-wol eventually finds out and blackmails both lovers, the soldier to have sex with her and...

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: David Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, Goodbye, Dragon Inn, Monte Hellman & More
Image
Filmmaking-related books released in the last few months cover a head-spinningly vast collection of topics and directors. Our latest swim in the literary waters features looks at filmmakers as diverse as Tobe Hooper and Lav Diaz, not to mention behind-the-scenes explorations at two key films of the late-60s/early-70s, and, to start, interviews with three of the most talented filmmakers on the planet.

Captivating interviews with David Cronenberg, Peter Weir, and Kasi Lemmons from University Press of Mississippi

I have made it something of a personal goal to track down as many books about David Cronenberg as I can, and sadly, it’s not too difficult. That means we need more studies of the director of Videodrome, The Fly, Dead Ringers, and Crash. And this is why I am happy to report that the latest of these, David Cronenberg: Interviews, edited by David Schwartz, is a substantial and...

Jane Fonda Joins Apple & Skydance Animation’s ‘Luck’ In A Lead Role
Image
Two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda will play The Dragon in Apple and Skydance Animation’s upcoming Luck. The news comes a day after the two companies announced a multi-year film and TV agreement.

Luck follows the unluckiest girl in the world, who after stumbling upon the never-before-seen world of good and back luck, must join together with magical creatures to uncover a force more powerful than even luck itself. I hear Fonda’s is not the role Emma Thompson exited as the entire production of Luck has been re-conceived.

Dragon is the exuberant CEO of Good Luck and undisputed luckiest ancient being in all the land. The character is billed as being elegant, stylish and as persuasive as she is powerful. The only thing better than good luck is more good luck, so when bad luck starts to spin out of control, she must face her fears or risk losing good luck forever.

Clarice: How Does The Show Compare to Hannibal?
Image
Can a series be considered part of the Hannibal Lecter franchise if Hannibal Lecter never appears?

Picking up in 1993, shortly after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, CBS’s new drama Clarice follows the continued trials and tribulations of Lecter’s most famous foil, originally brought to iconic, Oscar winning life by Jodie Foster thirty years ago. For long-time fans of Thomas Harris’ creation, Clarice is a contentious proposition. The idea of a TV series about Clarice Starling is neither a creatively bankrupt nor unappealing one, however it comes with a faint veneer of controversy due to a perception that its very existence potentially puts an end to revival chances for Bryan Fuller’s gone-too-soon cult classic Hannibal, which ran on NBC between 2013 and 2015.

Due to complicated rights issues dating back to the 1980s, Thomas Harris’s stable of characters has been divided between different studios, with the...

Swedish Drama ‘Tigers,’ ‘Another Round’ Triumph at Goteborg
Image
Swedish helmer-writer Ronnie Sandahl’s “Tigers” – a rare glimpse inside the world of professional soccer following a protagonist who struggles with the pressures of success – came away the biggest winner at Sweden’s 43rd Göteborg Film Festival, scoring the best Nordic film kudo, this year worth approximately $48,000.

The film’s lead actor, Erik Enge, also nabbed the fest’s award for best actor for his subtle, nuanced performance as a 17-year-old professional player hired by the Italian club Inter Milan.

The Golden Globe-nominated Danish film “Another Round,” from director Thomas Vinterberg, claimed the audience choice award for a film in the Nordic competition. Meanwhile, the critics’ jury opted for director-writer Ninja Thyberg’s feature debut, “Pleasure,” a bold and daring documentary-like descent into the subterranean world of the L.A. porn industry, with a tour de force performance from newcomer Sofia Kappel.

Swedish Helmer-Writer Ninja Thyberg Spotlights the Adult Film Biz in ‘Pleasure’
Image
After a prize-winning short of the same name, Swedish director-writer Ninja Thyberg’s “Pleasure,” a drama unfolding within the shadowy world of the adult film industry, premieres in Sundance and moves on to Goteborg and the Dragon competition for best Nordic film.

What inspired the storyline of “Pleasure?”

I’ve been working on the topic for a very long time. I made a short film with the same title. It premiered in Cannes in 2013 and Sundance the year after.

I got the inspiration for that story while writing an essay about porn during a gender studies class at university. But I’ve been interested in porn as a subject for a very long time.

There are many things that fascinate me, but I am interested in gender roles, media images and different stereotypes. It’s very easy to find them in porn. They are very extreme in a lot of porn.

Game of Thrones (2011)
Does Game of Thrones Really Need to Be a Shared Universe?
Game of Thrones (2011)
From the harbor of Oldtown to the top of the Wall, it is known throughout Westeros that all men must die. That they must, yet the phrase may soon be amended to include, “and all geek properties must live on… forever.” It certainly appears to be the takeaway from the news that a Game of Thrones animated series for HBO Max is currently in development.

The revelation came late Wednesday afternoon via THR when it was reported that HBO Max, the streaming arm of WarnerMedia, was meeting with writers to hear ideas for a potential animated drama in the same tonal vein as Game of Thrones, the pop culture phenomenon of a TV series that ran between 2011 and 2019.

Admittedly, it’s still early goings in the series’ development, and it’s unclear from the report whether HBO Max is hearing pitches from multiple writers about what an animated drama would...

The 10 Best Asian Martial Arts/Action Films of 2020
Image
The martial arts genre has been in a significant decline for many years now, with just a few entries here and there over the years, reminding us of its existence essentially, although gems like The Raid, Jailbreak etc occasionally come to the fore. A number of Asian martial arts superstars have already moved to Hollywood or other countries in the west, with the same applying to the action stars, at least those who have not moved to China. The Chinese industry releases action blockbusters quite frequently, most of which, however, are of doubtful quality, to say the least, with the combination of the aforementioned, making the current list one of the most difficult to compile. Nevertheless, 10 films were found in the end, although a number of them are mostly here for the impressiveness of the action scenes and not their quality overall.

Without further ado, here are the best Asian...

Dragon Ball Z (1996)
The Best Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game Decks
Dragon Ball Z (1996)
This story is presented by:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Dragon Ball Z collectible card game. After launching in 2000, the Dbz Ccg ran until 2008, when it was replaced by the Dragon Ball Ccg with revamped rules, which was discontinued shortly thereafter. In 2014, Panini remade the original game, leading to the Dragon Ball Super Ccg in 2017, the version that’s still running today. That’s four iterations across two official relaunches in the span of 20 years, if you’ve lost count.

That all being said, both the classic and current versions of the game are still worth looking into. Borrowing mechanics from Pokémon Tcg and Magic: The Gathering, the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super collectible card games are a compelling, fun way to play out battles as if they’d occur in the anime. The thrust is that you play one of the many warriors from throughout the series,...

The line-up has been set for the 2020 edition of Bridging the Dragon, an initiative run by the Cannes Marche du Film in collaboration with the Sino-European producers.

Oscars 2020: Best Animated Feature Predictions
This year’s animated feature nominees include Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” Laika’s stop-motion “Missing Link,” and two Neflix entries: “Klaus” and “I Lost My Body.”

“Toy Story 4” is certainly the one to beat. It exceeded expectations while breaking the franchise box office record. Pixar upped its animation (from the porcelain shepherdess to the complex antique shop), and delivered a surprising, bittersweet climax.

DreamWorks’ prestigious “Hidden World” concluded the beloved “Dragon” franchise on a high note, with director Dean DeBlois confronting the politics of hate, as grownup Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) secures the safety of his pal, Toothless, new companion Light Fury, and the rest of the dragon clan.
