Wanna feel old, Focker? Meet the Parents is turning 25 this October, and to mark the occasion, the cast — including Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Teri Polo — and director Jay Roach reunited at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend for a Q&a after an anniversary screening of the comedy.
And while the original movie was the night's main topic, the recently announced fourth movie in the series seemed to be on everyone's mind. Last month, it was announced that Academy Award nominee Ariana Grande would be joining the cast.
"I can’t really talk too much, I guess, at this point about the movie," Stiller. "But the character [Grande is] playing is — she’s going to be really, really funny and kind of the whole engine of the new movie. So it's exciting."
"The script is really fun," De Niro said. "I'm looking forward to it."

During a presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival today, Sony Pictures Animation unveiled the voice cast for its upcoming feature, “Goat,” an original action-comedy slated to hit theaters on Feb. 13, 2026. From the studio behind “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and in collaboration with NBA great Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and Modern Magic, “Goat” brings to life a world where the fiercest animals compete in the high-octane sport of roarball, and a diminutive goat dares to dream big.
Directed by Tyree Dillihay – who co-hosted the day’s presentation with producer Michelle Raimo Kouyate – and co-directed by Adam Rosette, the film celebrates the spirit of the underdog with a story steeped in the energy of basketball culture.
Leading the cast is “Stranger Things” star Caleb McLaughlin, voicing Will Harris, the titular “Goat,” a small-framed but big-hearted dreamer determined to prove he belongs in the Roar League, where speed and ferocity rule the court.

When "Iron Man" took the worldwide box office by storm in the summer of 2008, it did so with the audacious promise of not just sequels, but the creation of an entire big-screen universe that would culminate in the superhero mash-up comic book fans had been dreaming of since they were children. Could this newfangled Marvel Cinematic Universe hook enough rank-and-file moviegoers to achieve this lofty goal?
This would all be contingent on numerous gambles breaking in the company's favor. Marvel had to team steady-handed directors with color-inside-the-lines screenwriters, who would then hope like hell that the not-quite-a-list stars they'd cast to play these heroes could turn them into billion-dollar franchise pillars.
The most well-publicized casting competition at the time centered on finding the perfect, fresh-faced up-and-coming star to take up the shield of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. I was covering this process at the time for Ain't It Cool News,...

The protruding belly getting its closeup early in “She Runs the World” belongs to Allyson Felix, the world’s most decorated track star. It’s 2018, Felix is 32 and pregnant for the first time. In direct address, she talks about what she wants people to take away from her story — a story about starting a family during a stellar professional career and about the way the sports industry had made it hard for female athletes to choose parenting.
“I love when people say I can’t do something,” says Felix, her hair pulled up, her smile lucent. She is wearing a dark gray T-shirt with the word “Equality” embossed in gold. “Because I’m going to show you that I can.”

Robert Downey Jr.'s talent was always obvious, but his appetite for drugs and alcohol made it easy for studios to deny him work throughout the first few decades of his career. The son of trailblazing independent filmmaker Robert Downey (whose "Putney Swope" is one of the most scabrous pieces of pop cultural satire you will ever see), Downey fils popped up on the periphery of 1980s favorites like "Weird Science" and "Back to School" before delivering his breakout performance as the redlining addict Julian Wells in Marek Kanievska's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' "Less Than Zero."
Downey had the gift. He had it all. He was always the most exciting person on screen, which probably cheesed off some of his co-stars, but the kid couldn't help it. Like Eddie Murphy or Robin Williams, you were primed to laugh...

Movies rarely come more generic than French-Canadian filmmaker Maxime Giroux’s “In Cold Light,” an exhaustingly paced action-thriller where every idea and visual seems templated and stylized within an inch of their life. It’s something closer to a mood-board assortment than a film with a real story to tell. A stockpile of neon lights, derelict spaces, gritty town exteriors and an on-the-run anti-heroine (Maika Monroe) caught in a web of drug lords can only sustain one’s attention for only so long.
That’s too bad, as Monroe, the renowned scream queen of excellent genre entries like “It Follows” and “Watcher,” is always an enthralling watch pit against sinister pursuers. She brings her signature qualities — a silent emotional forte, a stoic sense of gracefulness — to the psychically demanding “In Cold Light.” But while a very muscular Monroe gives the cat-and-mouse game her character is forced into her all (and...

James Gunn stood his ground to protect his highly beloved “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, even against the studio that produced it.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said he fought back against the MCU’s connected timeline after he saw Thor join the Guardians in the “Avengers: Endgame” finale.
“I said in the script notes: ‘I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don’t want to do a movie with Thor,'” Gunn explained. “I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. Gunn also discussed teasing Will Poulter as Adam Warlock in the post-credit scene of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” Although it panned out with the character’s major role in “Guardians 3,” at the time,...

11 years ago, Keanu Reeves hadn’t had a hit movie in several years, Chad Stahelski was a stunt performer who had yet to direct a movie, and action cinema was in a bit of a rut. All that changed with the release of a little movie called “John Wick,” one that brought some much-needed spark to its genre.
Named after Reeves’ taciturn lead, the original 2014 “John Wick” was on paper a relatively straightforward revenge story, following a legendary hitman who reenters the criminal underworld to get revenge on the men who killed his dog (a storyline that provided a long-lasting icon for animal lovers everywhere). What made it stand out against a sea of similar films was the care with which Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad fleshed out this world, placing Wick’s quest for vengeance in an over-the-top universe of cartoonish assassins who abide by their own rules and...

Welcome to Pour One Out! In this series, IndieWire celebrates some of our favorite characters on TV that have come to the end of their run this season, with the stars that played them.
[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets.”]
For Steven Krueger, “Yellowjackets” was “kind of a mindfuck.” The actor spent three seasons playing TV’s unluckiest soccer coach before a bout of sudden-death overtime forced Coach Ben to hang up his crutches in Season 3. Speaking with IndieWire amid a heated Emmys race, Krueger reflected on his bizarre experience making the show — a brain-twisting challenge he still considers a personal best.
“Everybody asks me all the time, ‘Did you get to keep your head?’ That really is the universal first thing that everybody wants to know,” said Krueger. “The answer, of course, is no, I did not — nor would I want to.”

Frank Lee has spent nearly his entire life running movie theaters. At 70, after a long career as an independent theater operator in San Francisco, he and his wife and co-owner, Lida, are looking to sell the Marina and Presidio theaters which they have overseen since the early 2000s. But he says the filmgoing experience shouldn’t end.
Lee wants to “see these two theaters continue as movie theaters.”
He says he would be sad about stepping away from the theaters, which are both on Chestnut Street in the Marina District and part of the Lee Neighborhood Theatres business, but that it’s the right moment for a new owner.
“I think it’s about time. After 60 years in the business, it might be a good opportunity right now. And things are looking up,” Lee told Variety. “I think the release schedule this year could be hopefully back to normal from pre-covid.

Michael Douglas on Tuesday was celebrated with a lifetime achievement award by Italy’s Taormina Film Festival where “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the multiple Oscar-winning classic that he produced 50 years ago, will screen in the fest’s 6,000-seat open-air ancient Greek amphitheater.
The fest is headed by marketing guru Tiziana Rocca who has close Hollywood ties and is back at the helm eight years after she was forced to step down due to political infighting in 2017 following a five-year stint.
Douglas, 80, received the prize on the fest’s opening night from Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, who is attending Taormina to take part in a panel on female empowerment in the film industry.
“Michael Douglas is far more than a star. He is a cornerstone of modern cinema,” Knobloch said. “Over the course of more than five decades he has consistently chosen roles that reflect the complexity of human nature.

Scarlett Johansson told David Harbour during a conversation for Interview magazine that she asked Marvel to remove her executive producer credit for “Thunderbolts*,” the Marvel tentpole that opened in theaters in May. Harbour headlined “Thunderbolts*” alongside Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis Dreyfus and more. Harbour and Pugh originally made their MCU debuts opposite Johansson in “Black Widow.”
“It’s the opening day of a movie that basically you are the seventh Thunderbolt in. Your character is all over this movie…. You are an executive producer on it. Congratulations,” Harbour said during the chat.
“I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn’t involved,” Johansson replied, more or less suggesting that contractual reasons were why she was credited.

Dakota Johnson revealed on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast that Sandra Bullock reached out to her earlier this year after Johnson won the Razzie Award for worst actress. Bullock previously “won” the same prize in 2010 for her performance in the rom-com “All About Steve.” Bullock then won the Oscar for best actress a few days later, thanks to “The Blind Side.”
“I recently actually exchanged texts — well, I got a voice note — from Sandra Bullock, because I don’t know if you know, but I won the Razzie for Worst Actress,” Johnson told Poehler. “There’s a lot of good people who have won that… but Sandra Bullock sent me a voice note, being like ‘I heard you are in the Razzie club and we should have brunch, we should have a monthly brunch.’ Because I guess she won that the year that she won the Oscar as well.

It can be surreal to learn about the casting decisions that almost happened. "A Clockwork Orange" star Malcolm McDowell almost played Pennywise the dancing clown. Val Kilmer was almost Morpheus in "The Matrix." For every movie or TV show, there are a whole bunch of "almost" casting stories that would have completely changed the way things turned out. Usually, things seem to work out for the best, but there are always those circumstances where fans wonder what might have been. There's even one to ponder about actor Jonah Hill.

Doctor Doom is one of the most noteworthy and beloved villains ever to grace the pages of a comic book. While he's become a larger fixture in the larger Marvel Comics universe over the decades since his creation, Victor Von Doom is most closely associated with the Fantastic Four as their arch-nemesis. Naturally, that will lead certain fans to wonder if former "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom is going to appear in this summer's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." Well, director Matt Shakman has weighed in on the topic multiple times, and his answers don't leave much room for interpretation.

Roman Polanski’s “An Officer and a Spy” is finally getting a U.S. release, six years after premiering at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize under Lucrecia Martel’s jury. The film, which won four of its 12 César nominations including Best Director in 2020, is now set for a two-week limited engagement, starting August 8, at New York City’s Film Forum.
Film Forum isn’t handling the release beyond showings at its own venue, IndieWire has learned, which were booked by “An Officer and a Spy” producer Alain Goldman. Glen Powell’s ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris appeared on the latest episode of the “Too Much” podcast and spoke out for the first time about the end of their relationship in April 2023 amid romance rumors between Powell and his “Anyone But You” co-star Sydney Sweeney. The two actors later confirmed to The New York Times they leaned into the fake romance rumors in order to boost the film’s publicity, a strategy that worked, as “Anyone But You” was a box office sleeper hit with $220 million worldwide.

Building your professional toolkit is not an overnight task. For actress/writer/comedienne Kerri Kenney-Silver, even though she continues to adapt with more dramatic work like “The Four Seasons,” she still holds true to what she learned when pursuing sketch comedy in college: Know how to do it all.
Speaking to IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking for the latest episode of “What No One Tells You,” Kenney-Silver said of her early years in comedy, “You are doing everything. You are the prop master. You are doing your own makeup. You’re slapping on wigs. You’ve got Ziplocs full of mustaches.”
The sketch group Kenney-Silver joined at New York University would go on to become the beloved comedy troupe The State, which also featured David Wain, Joe Lo Truglio, Thomas Lennon, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and Ken Marino. When they were just starting out in 1992, every aspect of their performances were self-curated.

If I say the name Joey Tribbiani today, everybody on Earth who was born before 2000 and owned a television immediately pictures Matt LeBlanc with his mischievous smile and jet-black hair, uttering some nonsense line or asking a beautiful girl how she's doing. And that's exactly how it should be. In retrospect, the NBC sitcom's casting was pitch-perfect, and one of the reasons "Friends" turned into the pop culture phenomenon it's been regarded as for decades. But even back in the '90s, before the show kicked off, up-and-coming actors knew the main roles in this series were golden opportunities to stand out and boost their careers — even if they hadn't suspected the monumental global impact the program would have on the comedy genre and broadcast television itself.

Dakota Johnson could be on her way to an Oscar down the line, but the “Materialists” star is first celebrating being a part of the “Razzie Club” thanks to Sandra Bullock.
Johnson earned her first Razzie Award for Worst Actress for comic book flop “Madame Web” (the film also “won” Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture earlier this year.) Johnson’s fellow Razzie alum Bullock reached out to the actress to welcome her to the “club,” as Johnson said during Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast.
“Sandra Bullock sent me a voice note, being like, ‘I heard you are in the Razzie Club and we should have brunch. We should have like a monthly brunch,’” Johnson said. “But I freaked out getting this message from her because she’s so iconic to me, as a movie star. I was like, ‘Oh my god, it was just crazy.’”

“American Honey” breakout Sasha Lane and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” star Elias Kacavas have joined the cast of the horror-satire “Corporate Retreat.” The pair will appear in an ensemble that includes Alan Ruck (“Succession”), Rosanna Arquette (“Pulp Fiction”), Ashton Sanders (“Moonlight”) and Odeya Rush (“Lady Bird”). The film is currently shooting in Los Angeles.
Lane’s recent credits include “Twisters” and “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” as well as the limited series adaptation of Sally Rooney’s “Conversations With Friends”.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 2.]
It’s Abby’s turn now: Kaitlyn Dever is confirmed to be the lead star of “The Last of Us” Season 3, as co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said during an Emmys FYC event attended by IndieWire.
While this is no surprise to fans of the video games, the series adaptation is now following suit. Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal previously were co-leads of the first season; Ramsey stepped into a solo leading role after Pascal’s character Joel met his demise by the hands of Dever’s Abby.
“I’ve been involved with several failed adaptations, both for ‘Uncharted’ and ‘The Last of Us,'” Druckman said. “And I think it was good to go on that journey, to end up at HBO and end up at a place that leaned into those controversial decisions, I guess. Danny Boyle has had rotten luck over the years with studio movies. After establishing himself as a brashly talented filmmaker with "Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting," 20th Century Fox brought him into the fold for an outright flop ("A Life Less Ordinary") and a massive under-performer. He tends to do just fine when he's working outside of the system on movies that've received studio distribution, but his sensibility is just off-center enough to get him in trouble when dealing with bottom line-minded executives.
One of Boyle's biggest Hollywood headaches was induced during the pricey production of "Sunshine." The heady sci-fi thriller marked his third collaboration with screenwriter Alex Garland, and it's still dividing audiences today due to its arguably too-conventional third act. Thanks to mutedly positive reviews and a meh response from moviegoers, the film -- which features superb performances from Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, and Chris Evans -- wound up...

The introduction of the character Nicepool in Marvel’s 2024 hit “Deadpool & Wolverine” might mark the most scrutinized four minutes of screen time in recent memory.
On Monday, Judge Lewis Liman threw out Justin Baldoni‘s defamation case against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. That means Marvel won’t have to turn over what it calls “proprietary and highly confidential” documents and communications about the development of Reynolds’ Nicepool character. While Judge Liman threw out Baldoni’s defamation case, he is allowing the director to file an amended complaint by June 23 regarding interference with contracts. But the Nicepool subpoena was tied to the defamation claims, which are now dead.
“The motion by Marvel Entertainment, LLC (“Marvel”) to quash a subpoena issued to Marvel from the Wayfarer Parties and for a protective order prohibiting the disclosure of Marvel’s confidential documents is Granted,” Judge Liman wrote. “The information sought is no...

Fandom can be a really intense and personal thing, and sometimes that means fans can take things way too far. That's the central premise behind "The Fanatic," the 2019 thriller co-written and directed by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, which follows a neurodivergent man named Moose (John Travolta) who becomes violently obsessed with his favorite actor, Hunter Dunbar (Devon Sawa). Durst co-wrote the movie with screenwriter Dave Bekerman and loosely based it on his own experiences with fans who began to stalk him, though Moose takes things to truly terrifying places. Moose isn't just the kind of obsessive fan who knows everything there is to know about someone, like hardcore Trekkies or the hilarious fictional "Galaxy Quest" fandom; he also starts stalking Hunter and even breaks into his home.

If you were a fan of “The Day of the Jackal,” the 1973 political thriller directed by Fred Zinnemann and based on Frederick Forsyth’s novel about an elusive assassin, and worried that a television adaptation would prove unworthy, you weren’t alone — even the creators of Peacock’s new take on the material were nervous about living up to the original.

Anyone who's played a game from acclaimed Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima can tell he's a big fan of movies. His games, like the "Metal Gear" series and "Death Stranding," are well known for being deeply cinematic with wildly complex plots, and he's gotten some pretty famous movie-makers to take on roles in them. In fact, "Death Stranding" features not only actors Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Margaret Qualley, and Léa Seydoux, but it also includes vocal and motion-capture performances by directors Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro. Now, with Kojima and A24 now in the process of turning "Death Stranding" into an actual movie, it seems prudent to look into the impressive creative's favorite films.
Recently, Kojima has both visited the Criterion closet to discuss some of his favorite films and been asked about his favorite four movies by GQ, and while there's a tiny bit of overlap,...

There are a few things Margarita (Lillian Carrier) knows for sure: she does not want to get a job, she definitely does not want to get a job which requires her to wear “hard pants,” she loves horses, she loves her mom, and she’s not eager to engage in much of anything that might open her up to ridicule. And yet, the young autistic woman — and Carrier herself is autistic — has already gone against some of those internal rules. She went to college and got a degree. She spends a lot of her time riding around on an adult-sized tricycle with a stuffed horse head attached to it (he’s known as “Cheeseburger”). She loves doing karaoke with her mom Sandy (a heartbreaking Gretchen Mol) at their favorite restaurant.

Superman has always been a character that's represented ideals such as hope, altruism, and the indomitable human spirit, but this year, he's standing tall against a scourge endemic to many a recent comic book movie: Homework. As Warner Bros. seeks to reboot its flagship franchise with a whole new DC Universe unfolding under the careful eye of studio co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, no movie feels more crucial right out of the gate than Gunn's upcoming "Superman." Part of that comes down to simply making good and successful movies, which would be a refreshing change of pace from the string of critical and box office disappointments leftover from the previous regime. But equally as important is the need to avoid the mistakes of DC's biggest and most formidable competitor, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Netflix subscribers have apparently been enjoying a unique and twisted getaway recently via the sleeper hit black dramedy series "Sirens." Created by playwright Molly Smith Metzler and executive produced by "Barbie" star/producer Margot Robbie, among others, the five-episode limited series follows two sisters on vastly diverging paths who are somewhat forced to reconnect at a billionaire's summer home.
As hard as it would be for these two sisters to reconcile under the most normal of circumstances -- one dropped out of college to devote her life to a wealthy socialite; the other just got out of prison -- their relationship is further strained by the influence of the various bizarre, unsettling, and out-of-touch people that now surround them.

Scarlett Johansson is one of the most important actors in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having portrayed Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, on screen for over a decade. The character (spoilers?) eventually died in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," and while Johansson returned to the role two years later in the movie "Black Widow" (which takes place before "Endgame" in the McU's timeline), she has made it clear Black Widow herself is going to stay dead. All the same, it previously appeared as though Johansson had since reunited with Marvel Studios, having landed an executive producer credit on 2025's "Thunderbolts*." However, it turns out that she tried to have that credit removed.
Johansson touched on this while speaking to "Thunderbolts*" star David Harbour, who made his MCU debut in "Black Widow," in a piece for Interview Magazine. The two spoke on the very day that "Thunderbolts*" hit theaters and had a good-natured exchange about it.

The Tribeca Festival is known for its film selections, but in recent years, to compete with events like SXSW, it has expanded to include tracks highlighting audio, gaming, immersive, and musical storytelling. Acknowledging that innovative storytelling is happening in many media is a welcome development from Tribeca, which is also the first major festival to have official podcast selections and the only one to require world premiere status.
In the world of audio storytelling, once podcasts are dropped on an open RSS feed, they have to sink or swim on the many podcast platforms of the internet. “Animal Farm” has always been, since its first publication in 1945 by British novelist George Orwell, both a timeless tale and a story of its time. It is no surprise, then, that Andy Serkis’ animated adaptation feels so deeply rooted in our own contemporary world.
Bringing the film to its global premiere at the Annecy Animation Festival yesterday, Serkis appeared moved and delighted to present “Animal Farm” in front of a packed Bonlieu. The film features a star-studded cast led by Seth Rogen (voicing a rowdy/eerie version of Napoleon), Gaten Matarazzo (Lucky), Woody Harrelson (Boxer) and Laverne Cox (Snowball), along with talents such as Iman Vellani, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close and Serkis himself.
Back for the second year at an event that he, according to artistic director Marcel Jean, “immediately fell in love with,” Serkis spoke with Variety about the film, decades in the making.

Dick Wolf's "One Chicago" franchise has been one of NBC's most reliable Nielsen ratings performers since its flagship show, "Chicago Fire," debuted in the fall of 2012. Aside from the ill-fated, semi-redundant "Chicago Justice" (which only lasted 13 episodes in 2017), the series and its spinoffs, "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Med," seem every bit as unkillable as Wolf's "Law & Order" franchise. As long as the shows' fans keep tuning in every week, these Windy City procedurals ain't goin' nowhere.
Alas, the cast members aren't guaranteed to stick around for quite as long. Fans were reminded of this when, prior to the conclusion of the show's 13th season, it was announced that Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett would not be returning to the show in the fall. Stanley Kubrick is celebrated as one of the most visually dynamic filmmakers in the medium's history, with his work demonstrating a willingness to play in every kind of genre playground. While some of his previous films dabbled with horrific themes, "The Shining" was his first flat-out horror film. Horror maestro Stephen King notoriously shared some not so kind words over the past few decades over Kubrick's wildly different adaptation of his 1977 novel. "The Shining" may not be a 1-1 recreation of the source material, but it stands as one of the best examples of what an adaptation can be.
King's story of a recovering alcoholic battling his demons alongside his family in a haunted hotel nestled deep in the Colorado Rockies took on a much meaner bent in Kubrick's hands. In the 1980 film, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is off from the start. The horror derives, not from a complex individual staving off his impulses,...

Emerging animation creators should learn to stop worrying and love social media, looking beyond established production and distribution models. But there are a few pointers.

“That’s the beauty of independent creators and stories and internet-born characters: you get to interact with the communities and fandoms. [Vocaloid] Hatsune Miku is a great example. It really is about putting IP into the audience’s hands.”

This installment is the first without Brad Bird at the helm. For better or worse, Nick Cassavetes' 2004 film "The Notebook" still resonates with audiences. It's been more than 20 years since this Nicholas Sparks adaptation first hit theaters, and many people have since come to regard it as one of the all-time great romance movies. It's a tad surprising, too; the film earned lukewarm reviews and was a respectable-if-modest box office success upon its initial release, receiving much in the way of criticism for its melodramatic extremes and tendency to stew in genre clichés.
20 years later, these criticisms still hold water, as "The Notebook" feels like a clumsy foray into saccharine sentimentality and lacks the innate sincerity that more compelling love stories embrace. Before you ready your pitchforks, however, I must admit that Cassavetes' film knows how to win you over even when you're aware of its flaws, thanks to the spectacular lead performances that make it worthwhile.
