Prime Video's Tomb Raider series has found its Lara Croft in Game of Thrones star
Image
Lara Croft is ready for another outing on the small screen, and this time with Phoebe Waller-Bridge running the show. The Prime Video series Tomb Raider has found its lead in a Game of Thrones star, and we’re excited!

Tomb Raider is one of those video games that has been turned into movies in the past, with varying success rates. The latest adaptation has Prime Video behind it, which has managed to bring an excellent adaptation of the Fallout games, so there is hope of success with this one.

Of course, it was always about finding the best lead for the series. Now the show has done it.

Review: Jess Franco’s ‘The Vengeance of Dr. Mabuse’ on Kino Cult Blu-ray
Image
Jess Franco knew how to bring a franchise to its logical conclusion: by submitting its abiding visual and thematic tropes to a playful combination of parody and self-referential deconstruction. He did it first with his pair of Fu Manchu movies for producer Harry Alan Towers in the late 1960s. He did it again with The Vengeance of Dr. Mabuse, which ended a run of films focused on the titular master criminal and arch hypnotist that began with a decades-spanning trilogy from Fritz Lang before becoming a five-film franchise in the ’60s produced by Artur Brauner, who was also the financial force behind Franco’s film.

From the start of The Vengeance of Dr. Mabuse, Franco tweaks the longstanding series by never even mentioning the M word. In the German-language cut available here, the title card coyly reads Dr. M. Strikes and the resident mad medico goes by Dr. Cranko (Jack Taylor...

‘The Vengeance of Dr. Mabuse’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Fred Williams, Jack Taylor, Ewa Strömberg, Roberto Camardiel, Siegfried Lowitz, Gustavo Re, Eva Garden | Written by Jess Franco, Artur Brauner, Arne Elsholtz | Directed by Jess Franco

In 1921 Norbert Jacques created a nefarious literary supervillain named Dr. Mabuse. Dr. Mabuse was a master of disguise and telepathic hypnosis. In his adventures, he would use body transference often through demonic possession, all for one purpose: to change the world into a “society of crime”.

When you think of Dr. Mabuse, there is a director that would be perfect for a tale of this supervillain, and that man, of course, is Jess Franco. Franco was highly prolific in directing low-budget films, especially those in the genres of exploitation, horror and B-movies. In 1972, he co-wrote and directed “Dr. M schlägt zu”.

Now, 53 years after its release, Kino Lorber, under the division of Kino Cult, is releasing Dr. M schlägt zu or The Vengeance of Dr.

Fans Of Drop Will Love This Underrated, Tense Thriller Streaming On Prime Video
Image
The only thing more stressful than having the jitters before a special occasion is having an outside party intensify that wave of anxiety tenfold under the threat of death. In Christoper Landon's superb new thriller "Drop," which /Film's Ryan Scott lauded as a lean, crowd-pleasing ride in his review, Meghann Fahy plays a single mother who finds herself on the first date from hell when she starts receiving a series of threatening airdrop messages. Should she not follow the mysterious figure's specific instructions to kill her date, then her son will die, as will anyone she attempts to warn in the process.

Landon makes the leap from horror-comedy to high tension thriller with ease here, creating a gripping sense of paranoia as our main character grapples with the terrible predicament she's found herself in. You'll see a lot of folks comparing "Drop" to Wes Craven's "Red Eye," and they're not wrong.

The Rig Cast & Character Guide
Image
Prime Video's The Rig features a star-studded cast, and it also serves as a reunion for a surprising number of stars from Game of Thrones and Line of Duty. The Rig follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo, an off-shore oil rig on the coast of Scotland. Unfortunately, the problems of deepwater oil drilling isn't even close to the biggest issue the crew has to face, as The Rig also heavily features supernatural elements. By the end of The Rig season 2, the entire fate of the world ends up hanging in the balance.

As with any show that heavily features supernatural elements, the crew of The Rig was extremely important to making those strange occurrences seem real. Once the Ancestor was revealed in The Rig, the show could have easily devolved into a pulpy sci-fi mess. Luckily, however, the show's star-studded cast held everything together and delivered a thrilling and dramatic story.

Corey Feldman Explains Why ‘The Birthday’ Film Took 20 Years To Release
Image
After two decades, one of Corey Feldman‘s lost roles is finally seeing the light of day.

The actor recently addressed the “million-dollar question” of why his 2004 Eugenio Mira-helmed film The Birthday is only now getting a release 20 years later, rolling out in select US theaters through October and November, and on VOD on Oct. 29.

“I have my own theories,” he told Salon. “The official answer is that the executive producer said he didn’t want to accept any offer that was not a full refund of his expenses to make it theatrical. We wanted it theatrical, but most distributors wouldn’t give money upfront, or would only give a little upfront, saving most [payment] for the backend. DVDs were fading out then, and times were changing. He held strong. We played at some festivals and got tremendous reviews. It was getting the buzz it needed, but he said, ‘No.

Corey Feldman: ‘The Birthday’ Director Eugenio Mira’s Self-Funded Restoration Is the Result of Divine ‘Synergy’
Image
It only took 20 years for Corey Feldman’s critically acclaimed performance in indie horror film “The Birthday” to be seen by audiences — and the former child star turned musician is reveling in his long overdue praise.

The story of the long road to the big screen for “The Birthday” is almost stranger than fiction: While iconic filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro and Quentin Tarantino watched (and supposedly loved) director Eugenio Mira’s filmmaking debut back in 2004, the horror-comedy never was released in theaters. “The Birthday” was born at the Sitges International Film Festival in 2004, and later had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2005. And then it subsequently died. As bootleg copies circulated via DVD and later, YouTube, the lore surrounding “The Birthday” only propelled the film into cult status.

‘The Birthday’ 4K Restoration Trailer: Corey Feldman’s Unhinged Take on ‘The Shining’ Finally Gets a Theatrical Release
Image
Twenty years later and Corey Feldman is back on the big screen for his iconic cult film “The Birthday.”

The feature, which counts Jason Blum and Jordan Peele among its fans, marked director Eugenio Mira’s filmmaking debut. Now, thanks to Drafthouse Films, “The Birthday” is celebrating its own b-day in a big way: with a 4K ultra high definition theatrical release, which will be its first time ever distributed in theaters.

Feldman leads the 2004 horror-comedy that was shot in real time. Feldman is Norman, a man who just might be having the worst trip to a hotel ever, much like “The Shining.” Norman thinks he’s just going to a birthday party, but it turns out the festivities are for the birth of a cult’s god…

The official synopsis reads: “Not everything is as it seems at the old Royal Fulton Hotel. Norman Forrester (Feldman) is finally going...

Prince Harry & Prince William’s NYC Run-In: How the Estranged Brothers Could …
Image
Royal watchers the world over are hoping a Prince Harry-Prince William NYC run-in will make tabloid headlines next month.

Their reason for rooting for such a specific scenario is that both princes will be in Manhattan in late September.

As you’re probably aware, William and Harry have been estranged for quite some time now.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Britain’s Prince William, Duke of Cambridge attend the unveiling of a statue of their mother, Princess Diana at The Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace, London on July 1, 2021, which would have been her 60th birthday. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the trouble began. But the situation certainly worsened when Harry and wife Meghan Markle decided to step down from their duties as working royals.

And it the rift deepened further with Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview.

‘Ship of the Damned’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Hannaj Bang Bendz, Jacob Anderton, Martyn Luke, Sean Tizzard, Ben Manning, Vicki Glover | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson

Ship of the Damned opens with a brief prologue set on board a pirate ship in 1622. As the ship sails through a storm, the crew prepare for dinner. Which for them means rather tamely hacking a bound woman to death and eating her raw flesh. In the present, Elena has her martial arts training interrupted by a phone call from her ex, Michael. He hasn’t taken the breakup well and keeps finding reasons to call her, but this time it’s legit, even if it doesn’t sound like it.

The Coast Guard have found what appears to be a seventeenth-century sailing ship drifting off the coast and towed it into port. Since she’s an expert in such things, he’d like her to come down and be part of the investigation.

Cult Film ‘The Birthday’ Starring Corey Feldman Lands 4K Theatrical Release from Drafthouse Films 20 Years Later
Corey Feldman in The Birthday (2004)
Corey Feldman’s cult classic feature is finally hitting the big screen.

Feldman stars in 2004 film “The Birthday,” directed by Eugenio Mira. The feature made its world premiere at the Sitges International Film Festival in 2004 but was essentially lost and never viewed in theaters after its initial festival circuit tour.

Now, 20 years later, “The Birthday” is getting a 4K ultra high definition theatrical release from Drafthouse Films.

“Way back in 2005, during the first-ever Fantastic Fest, we booked ‘The Birthday’ [for its U.S. premiere],” Alamo Drafthouse Founder and Fantastic Fest Director Tim League told IndieWire. “That movie and that now twenty-year relationship with director Eugenio Mira, in no small measure, crystallized the personality of the festival. Twenty years later, I am beyond thrilled to finally herald, ‘The 4K restoration is coming out this year!'”

The film will open in theaters throughout North America this fall. The North American rights to “The Birthday” were negotiated by Drafthouse Films’ CEO,...

Ruth Ashton Taylor, Pioneering Broadcast Journalist, Dies at 101
Image
Ruth Ashton Taylor, a pioneering TV and radio journalist who worked with Edward R. Murrow at CBS News and was a fixture on the air in Los Angeles for decades, has died. She was 101.

Taylor’s family confirmed her death to Kcal-tv Los Angeles. Taylor, who grew up in Long Beach, was the first woman to have an on-air news role in Los Angeles when she joined what was then CBS’ Kstl-tv in late 1951. At the time, she was hired to deliver a “women’s segment” for the station’s daily half-hour newscast.

Taylor bristled at the notion of covering only “women’s stories” and delivered stories produced with solid journalistic principles. Soon, she was hired to produce a similar segment for CBS’ Los Angeles news radio powerhouse Knx.

“Taylor says she always approached her stories any way she liked. She justified her attitude by saying she must be giving...

Ruth Ashton Taylor, Pioneering Female Newscaster and Reporter, Dies at 101
Image
Ruth Ashton Taylor, the trailblazing journalist who was the first female TV reporter on the West Coast and an inspiration to generations of women covering serious news, has died. She was 101.

Ashton Taylor died Thursday in San Rafael, California, her daughter Laurel Conklin told The Hollywood Reporter.

After getting her start at CBS Radio alongside Edward R. Murrow in the 1940s, Ashton Taylor returned to her native Los Angeles and, in 1951, became the first woman on the West Coast to work in television news when she took a job with Knxt-tv (now Kcbs).

Ashton Taylor exited in 1958 to work as a college public information officer but came back to the station in 1962 to join a program produced by TV personality Ralph Story and to co-host The Ruth and Pat Show on the radio with comedian Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) for about a year.

The Stunt Work on ‘S.W.A.T.’ Is a Surprisingly Refreshing Throwback
Image
Over six seasons, CBS’ “S.W.A.T.” has served up the kind of dynamic character-based action that used to be the bread-and-butter of theatrically released cop movies, eschewing the trend toward CGI and superheroes in favor of a more grounded approach that looks back to the urban action classics of Walter Hill and Richard Donner. “We really strive to do everything as real as possible,” stunt coordinator Austen Brewer told IndieWire. “There are cases where we have to lean on our VFX guys because a location won’t allow it, but if we can stage an explosion and not use CGI and it can be safely done, we will do that.”

That philosophy has served Brewer and his co-stunt coordinator Lance Gilbert well, as both of them are Emmy nominated for their work on “S.W.A.T.” For Gilbert, the striving for authenticity helps make the series not only visually dynamic but emotionally involving.

German Distributor Splendid Film & ‘Stella Blomqvist’ Producer Sagafilm to Adapt ‘Operation Napoleon’ (Exclusive)
Image
Icelandic production powerhouse Sagafilm and Germany’s Splendid Film are teaming on the major feature project “Operation Napoleon,” to be lensed mostly in English.

Budgeted at around €6 million ($7.2 million), the thriller is based on the eponymous best-selling novel by Iceland’s crime master Arnaldur Indriðason, whose earlier novel “Jar City” was successfully filmed by Baltasar Kormákur.

Published locally in 2009 and translated into English in 2011, “Operation Napoleon” was awarded a Crime Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association.

The story centers on a young Icelandic female lawyer who’s suddenly sucked into the vortex of an international conspiracy after being accused of a murder she didn’t commit. Her only chance of survival lies in uncovering the secret of an old German World War II airplane, recently discovered on Iceland’s largest glacier.

Quarantine Viewing: Nostalgia TV and Alt Streaming Options Can Keep You Entertained!!
Julia Stiles
The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.

Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.

While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.

But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.

We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Two streaming networks that I believe are highly valuable have extended their normal seven-day free trial to 30 days. With that much time with each entity,...

Titans Season 2 Casts Bruce Wayne
Mike Cecchini Apr 11, 2019

Game of Thrones' Iain Glen will play Bruce Wayne on DC Universe's Titans Season 2.

Iain Glen is going from Westeros to Gotham City. The Game of Thrones actor has been cast as Bruce Wayne on Titans Season 2. Glen, who plays Jorah Mormont, loyal (and lovelorn) knight for Danaerys Targaryen, will play a seasoned Bruce Wayne who helps the budding team of Titans find their way. Glen has played two-fisted detective types before, having headlined Jack Taylor.

Here's the official character description (courtesy of Deadline):

“After decades of fighting crime as Batman, billionaire Bruce Wayne is just as driven to protect Gotham from evil as he was in his prime. Needing to reconcile his relationship with Dick Grayson, the duo hope to forge a new dynamic as Bruce tries to help his former sidekick and the Titans achieve success.”

The first season of Titans wasn't...

Blood Hunger: The Films Of Jose Larraz Available on Blu-ray March 26th From Arrow Video
Blood Hunger: The Films Of Jose Larraz will be available on Blu-ray March 26th From Arrow Video

One of the most underrated and oft-neglected genre filmmakers of his generation, Spanish-born director José Ramón Larraz (Symptoms) finally receives his due with this collection of his work, the first of its kind, bringing together a fascinating cross-section of films from the first half of his lengthy cinematic career.

In Larraz s debut feature, the hitherto ultra-rare Whirlpool (1970), Vivian Neves stars as Tulia, a young model invited to a photographer s secluded country home for what purports to be a quiet weekend retreat – but soon transpires to be anything but. 1974 s Vampyres – perhaps the best known and most widely-released of all José Larraz s films – sees a duo of blood hungry female vampires prowling the British countryside, from where they lure unsuspecting male motorists back to their imposing, dilapidated mansion for draining… in more ways than one.

AMC’s Best-of-British Streamer Acorn TV Launches in 30 New Territories
Acorn TV launched in 30 new markets Tuesday, the biggest wave of international launches to date for the AMC-owned streaming service, which focuses on British and English-language drama.

The platform is now live in Australia and New Zealand, India, Spain, the Nordics, the Benelux countries and South Africa. The international rollout started in June, when Acorn TV launched in a plethora of markets in Latin America. More territories in that region were added as part of Tuesday’s wave.

AMC Networks has just closed a $65 million deal to buy Acorn TV parent company Rlj Entertainment, but the international rollout plans were being put into place ahead of that.

Rights deals mean that not every show from the service in the U.S. will be immediately available in every territory. Matthew Graham, Svp and Gm for Acorn TV, told Variety that the “strategy has been to start with a focused offering...

Danny Dyer at an event for Desmembrados (2006)
Love Island Scores Major UK Ratings Win; Belgium’s ‘Team Chocolate’ Heads To UK; Acorn TV Launches Across Lat Am – Global Briefs
Danny Dyer at an event for Desmembrados (2006)
British reality format Love Island scored a peak audience of 3.4m viewers on ITV2 as the digital broadcaster cleaned up against its bigger rivals. The series, which follows a group of singletons including Danny Dyer’s daughter Dani Dyer who must couple up in a Majorcan villa, averaged 2.9m viewers across its 90-minute episode, more than double the 1.3m that tuned in to last year’s opener. Some 52% of its audience was aged between 16-34, a massive boon for the commercial broadcaster. The show helped the network beat major rivals including BBC One, which aired doc Suffragettes With Lucy Worsley in the timeslot, as well as The Queen’s Coronation In Colour on parent channel ITV, Versailles on BBC Two and C4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody. ITV bosses will hope that the increasing success of the format, a relative rarity in UK non-scripted formats, will help it sell the format into the U.

Acorn TV Offers the Best of British TV with a Generous Female Edge
Are you a fan of television from faraway lands?

Maybe you don't even know how much you enjoy shows produced in foreign countries because it's not crossed your mind to think about it.

A lot of the shows we watch in the Us are (dare I say it?) reboots of programming that has already aired elsewhere. While we're lucky enough to get some shows (Downton Abbey, Rosehaven, The A Word, Doctor Who), many others are left across the seas.

Some very savvy people finally got wise to the fact that for every person in the Us who loved The Killing, another might have wanted to see the original. Today I'm talking about the first of three online networks that bring to you programming from around the world.

Acorn TV is a subscription streaming service that offers world-class mysteries, dramas, comedies, and documentaries from Britain and beyond. They add programming weekly...

Review: "Pieces" (1982) UK Dual Format Special Edition From Arrow
By Darren Allison

“Pieces” (Mil Gritos Tiene La Noche) 1982 Directed by Juan Piquer Simón, Starring Jack Taylor, Christopher George, Lynda Day George, Frank Braña and Paul Smith. Arrow 3 disc Blu-ray, DVD and CD.

Arrow continue to satisfy our hunger for classic slasher movies with their latest release "Pieces" (1982), a classic slice of sickening nostalgia which emerged during the height of the video nasty era.

A Boston college campus is being terrorised by a black-clad maniac who collects body parts from his unfortunate co-ed victims. As the corpses (and red herrings) begin to pile up, can Professor Brown (genre veteran Jack Taylor) unmask the murderer before his morbid puzzle is complete?

Fans of the genre should be incredibly pleased with the treatment given to this three disc collector’s edition. Let’s be clear from the outset, “Pieces” is not the best directed movie you’ll ever see. Director Juan Piquer Simón,...

‘Pieces’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Stars: Christopher George, Lynda Day George, Frank Brana, Edmund Purdom, Ian Sera, Paul L. Smith, Jack Taylor, Gerard Tichy, May Heatherly | Written by Dick Randall, Roberto Loyola | Directed by Juan Piquer Simón

Pieces is one of those movies that horror fans instantly fall in love with. While some would write it off as just another bad movie, others will love those moments of unintentional humour, especially from the dubbed version. This is what makes the Arrow Video Pieces: Limited Edition release on Blu-ray so much fun.

When a murderer stars killing off female students on a Boston college campus, the bodies soon start piling up. With body parts missing it seems that the killer is putting forming an interesting puzzle, but can they be stopped before they complete their work?

With a killer that is straight out of the Giallo genre, but a chainsaw that brings even more gore,...

Countess Irina Karlstein (Lina Romay) is as beautiful as she is deadly. She is a bloodthirsty vampire of course. However, unlike most who have fallen foul to the curse, she doesn’t revel in her acts of fatal lust. Her hunger for genuine love is just as strong as the hunger for the bloody stuff (as well as some of the other bodily fluids available.). Her quest for both finds her returning to her ancestral home. Unfortunately, her insatiable hunger claims many victims. From her gardener (Roger Germanes) to the local dominatrix (Monica Swinn), no one is safe. With an inquisitive forensic pathologist by the name of Dr. Roberts (Jess Franco himself) and his blind sidekick Dr. Orloff (Jean-Pierre Bouyxou) on her case, you’d...

Pieces Blu-ray Release Details & Cover Art
As diehard horror fans know, Leatherface wasn't the only cinematic killer to rev up a chainsaw, as evidenced by 1982's Pieces, a cult slasher film hitting shelves as a special three-disc Blu-ray on February 23rd from Grindhouse Releasing:

From Diabolik DVD: "Grindhouse Releasing is proud to present the sickest and most violent of all the early '80s slasher movies. A psychopathic killer stalks a Boston campus, brutally slaughtering nubile young college co-eds, collecting body parts from each victim to create the likeness of his mother who he savagely murdered with an axe when he was ten years old! Pieces is a wild, unrated gorefest, with enough splatter and sleaze to shock the most jaded horror fan.

Special Features

‘Voodoo Passion’ (1977) DVD Review (Ascot Elite)
aka Ru der blonden Göttin

Stars: Ada Tauler, Nanda Van Bergen, Jack Taylor, Karine Gambier, Vítor Mendes, Ly Frey, Aida Gouveia | Written by Jess Franco, Erwin C. Dietrich | Directed by Jess Franco

The film opens up on a sun kissed beach in Haiti. A group of locals are in the middle of a Voodoo ritual (pointed out in almost clumsy Mondo documentary like narration). They sure are having a good time letting loose and letting it all hang out! As this is going on a ship arrives. One of the passengers is Susan, a wealthy woman played by Ada Tauler (Love Camp). She is greeted by a young and attractive woman by the name of Inès, played by Nanda Van Bergen (Women Without Innocence). Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos at The Hi-Pointe Midnights This Weekend
Vampyros Lesbos screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (February 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)

I can’t believe after all these years I’m finally getting to see a Jess Franco movie on the big screen. This weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater, Andy at Destroy the Brain is offering up one the late Spanish director’s most noteworthy and beautiful films, Vampyros Lesbos, as part of the Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series.

I first discovered the captivating allure of Jess Franco as a child when his Count Dracula (1970) and Attack Of The Robots (1966) would constantly air on the creature feature syndicate. Even as a kid, I was captivated by Franco’s hypnotic, dreamy style and I can remember being puzzled by a narcotic quality I wasn’t used to. It was when VHS tapes were introduced in the early ‘80s that I really sought out his work.
