New Seth MacFarlane animated comedy series coming to Peacock with big stars
Image
Seth MacFarlane and Peacock appear to have a strong creative partnership, with the streaming platform teaming up once again with the Family Guy creator for a brand-new animated comedy. While MacFarlane already has his Ted live-action prequel series on Peacock, he's now set to expand his presence even more with a full-fledged Ted animated series.

While plot details are being kept secret, Ted: The Animated Series is said to be a sequel. It will continue the story after the first two Ted movies. Those hilariously funny comedy films, directed and co-written by MacFarlane, centered around the unexpected bond between a man named John Bennett and his foul-mouthed, magically sentient teddy bear, Ted. In addition to his behind-the-scenes work, MacFarlane also voiced the iconic character of Ted in the movies. He also currently voices the talking stuffed animal in the prequel series.

In this new animated Peacock show, MacFarlane will not...

‘Ted’ Animated Series From Seth MacFarlane Set at Peacock With Mark Wahlberg Co-Starring
Image
Peacock has given a series order to “Ted: The Animated Series,” the working title for an animated spinoff of the 2012 and 2015 live-action comedy film franchise created and directed by Seth MacFarlane, who starred with Mark Wahlberg.

The order further expands the franchise following the success of “Ted,” Peacock’s live-action prequel series.

MacFarlane of course will voice Ted, the foul-mouthed, magical talking teddy bear at the center of the story, with Wahlberg providing the voice of Ted’s human companion, John Bennett.

Also returning from the original films are Amanda Seyfried as John’s girlfriend, Sam Jackson, and Jessica Barth as Ted’s wife, Tami-Lynn.

Joining them are Kyle Mooney as the voice of “Apollo,” most likely Ted and Tami-Lynn’s adopted son from “Ted 2,” and Liz Richman (“Little America”), who plays “Polly” on Peacock’s “Ted” live-action series and will voice “Ruth” for the cartoon.

The show comes from...

Dial-Up Some Violence With This A24 Sleeper Dominating the Max Charts
Image
I don’t remember a great deal about Y2K. I was a wee lad at the time, and I was too busy running our copy of The Mummy through the Vcr a hundred times to worry much. I’m not even sure we had a computer at the time. It’s my understanding that preemptive action mitigated most of the more serious concerns, and Y2K, otherwise known as the year 2000 problem, is nothing but a faint cultural memory.

Not so faint for SNL alum Kyle Mooney, however. Partnering with A24, they released Y2K at the end of last year. The horror/comedy hybrid reimagines Y2K as an apocalyptic event wherein all the world’s technology gains sentience and turns against humanity. Think Ghost in the Machine (a classic) on a much larger scale. While critical reviews and box office receipts were iffy, Y2K is killing it on streaming,...

Alicia Silverstone to Return as Cher for ‘Clueless’ Series at Peacock
Image
Alicia Silverstone will reprise her iconic “Clueless” role of Cher Horowitz for a TV series based on the classic 1990s film, TheWrap has learned. She is also attached to executive produce the follow-up, along with Amy Heckerling, who directed and wrote the 1995 comedy, and producer Robert Lawrence.

It’s being developed by CBS Studios in association with Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, for Peacock.

Writers and executive producers on the series are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage through their Fake Empire banner. They previously teamed on “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl.”

Jordan Weiss, who created the Kat Dennings Hulu series “Dollface” and scripted upcoming Disney sequel “Freakier Friday,” will also serve as writer and EP. She was also a writer on the Max animated series “Harley Quinn” and directed and co-wrote 2024’s holiday romcom “Sweethearts,” which starred Kiernan Shipka.

Alicia Silverstone to Return for ‘Clueless’ Sequel Series at Peacock
Image
Get a clue! Peacock is developing a sequel series based on the ’90s favorite “Clueless,” and Alicia Silverstone is attached to star in the series reprising her role as Cher Horowitz, IndieWire has learned.

The Peacock show is described only as a follow-up sequel show to the 1995 cult favorite film from director and writer Amy Heckerling (who will EP the series), and while there have been some rumors about the exact focus of the show floating around, creative details are being kept under wraps for now. The series is currently in development for the streamer.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of “Gossip Girl” and “Nancy Drew” fame will write the series alongside “Freakier Friday” scribe Jordan Weiss, and all three will executive produce the series. Schwartz and Savage are producing through their banner Fake Empire.

Silverstone is also executive producing the series, as is Heckerling and the film’s original producer Robert Lawrence.

This A-List Horror Movie Bombed in Theaters — Now It’s #1 on Max
Image
I lived through the uncertainty of Y2K and have vivid memories of the ordeal. The anxiety was real. People were convinced that the sky was falling. Thankfully, the sky did not fall. But what if it actually did? That’s the question the #1 movie on Max today posits. Y2K imagines an alternate New Year’s Eve 1999 where instead of business as usual, technology revolted.

That sounds like such a promising premise. You get a bit of (ultra-late) ‘90s nostalgia and a major cultural milestone reimagined with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the execution of this period piece is lacking. Many critics called attention to the film’s tonal inconsistencies and said that a lot of the jokes don’t quite land.

Here’s a bit more context on the setup for this A24 Horror thriller on Max:

On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party,...

One Of Marvel's Best Comic Book Movies Is Taking Over Max's Top Charts
Image
Warner Bros. Discovery is currently gearing up to unleash James Gunn's "Superman" and launch its brand-new DC Universe following an ignoble end to its previous one (commonly referred to as the DC Extended Universe). It's not a stretch to say that "Superman" has the power to save or destroy an iconic movie studio, which is why it's sort of funny to see a superhero movie from Marvel and Disney currently dominating Warner's streaming service.

Back in 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, giving the studio — which already owned Marvel Studios and the behemoth that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe — access to the Fox line of superhero movies, including the X-Men saga. Then, in 2021, Disney+ and HBO Max (as it was then known) reached a deal to allow 20th Century movies to stream on both platforms. The result? Well, there have been a lot of different outcomes, including the cameo-packed "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024. Today,...

Rachel Zegler's Very Funny 2024 Sci-Fi Flop Is Finally Finding Fans On Max
Image
I'm not entirely sure why "Y2K" didn't fare better at the box office. However you look at it, $3.7 million on a $15 million budget just isn't good, and frankly director, co-writer, and "Saturday Night Live" alum Kyle Mooney deserved more. Not only is the man a comedy legend, but he also seemed to have a winning idea with "Y2K." You can imagine the A24 execs being quickly convinced during the pitch meeting: "What if Y2K actually happened?" It's such a simple idea that, as Mooney said frequently on the press tour, he couldn't believe nobody had done it. What's more, we're firmly in the age of early 2000s nostalgia now — right on time, too, if you believe in the 20-year cultural cycle rule.

As such, a horror-comedy about a Y2K doomsday actually happening from one of the most innovative comedians working today seems like it should have been a surefire hit.

Relive the terror of the new millienium in 'Y2K'
Image
A24’s newest streaming release is a horror comedy which revives the fears surrounding the Y2K virus in some pretty off-the-wall ways.

In reality, the Y2K virus turned out to be nothing but a big fizzle. But those who didn’t live through it might not be aware of the hysteria the so-called virus created, and they can get a taste of it in “Y2K,” the new A24 movie that arrives on Max on Friday, April 4 — a mere two weeks after The Streamable predicted it would arrive. The film imagines New Year’s Eve 1999 as a night of horrors when electronics come to life and begin to slay their human owners. The only way to stream the gruesome and giggle-inducing film is with a subscription to Max.

How to watch ‘Y2K’ When: Premieres on Friday, April 4 at 3:01 a.m. Et TV: HBO, Max Stream; Watch with a subscription to Max.

Y2K (2024) Movie Ending Explained: How Does Laura and Eli Save the World?
Kyle Mooney in Die Abenteuer von Brigsby Bär (2017)
Directed by Kyle Mooney, who has attained fame due to his hyper-specific and yet very broad SNL sketches, “Y2K” (2024) very much falls within that intersection of replicating the late 90s pop-culture world moving into the 2000s, as the movie taps into the zeitgeist of that era and answers, “What if Y2K was real?”

Y2K (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: What is Y2K?

Originally Y2K, or the “Year 2000 Problem,” referred to the inability of computer systems to distinguish dates post the year 2000, which could cause a lot of formatting and storage of calendar data. Because systems in that era used to indicate years with only the final two digits, the system was unable to distinguish between the years 1900 and 2000. The resultant scare, coupled with the lack of clarity, led to a section of the populace stocking up on food and water in preparation for an impending apocalypse. While such date...

'Bring Her Back' Directors Reveal the Real-Life Tragedy That Inspired Film
Image
The directors of Talk to Me, the Philippou brothers, are set to make their horror comeback in 2025 with Bring Her Back. The mysterious plot for the A24 movie has been kept under wraps, and the following official synopsis doesn’t explain much: "A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother." However, during a preview event, Danny Philippou may have provided some details about the upcoming movie, saying that a horrific real-life event inspired him during the process of writing the movie. Bring Her Back just got a little more terrifying.

Per the report by Bloody Disgusting, the Philippou crew appeared at an event where a few lucky attendees were able to see the trailer for Bring Her Back. It was during the visit that Danny revealed that a terrifying tragedy in the family occurred during writing, and he used it as...

‘Snow White’ Joins Three Other 2025 Movies to Hit This Massive Milestone
Image
Disney’s controversial Snow White movie continues to find success at the box office despite a mixed reception from critics and audiences. After opening with $42 million at the domestic box office this weekend, Snow White collected another $2.5 million on Monday, and the film is now only a few hundred thousand away from reaching $45 million domestically. Snow White will certainly hit this when the next batch of numbers comes in, and it will be one of only four movies released this year to reach this milestone, with the other two being Captain America: Brave New World and Dog Man. Disney’s Snow White has also added $43 million from international markets to help its global total reach $87 million, and it will easily push past $90 million soon before reaching $100 million by the end of the week.

Starring in the lead role of Snow White in the film is Rachel Zegler, who first broke...

‘Snow White’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in Disney’s Live-Action Remake?
Image
Disney’s live-action “Snow White” is here, taking the 1937 animated film into the real world, dwarves and all.

Although technically, in this version, they aren’t dwarves. As explained in the movie, they’re magical creatures that have lived in the woods for hundreds of years. That said, they still take on the names of the original seven dwarves.

And of course, there are some recognizable humans on screen as well as lending their voices to the merry bunch.

So, here are all the faces — and voices — you’ll need to know.

"He Was Giving Taylor Swift Easter Eggs": Steven Spielberg Gave A Glowing Recommendation Of Rachel Zegler's Snow White Casting
Image
Rachel Zegler revealed that Steven Spielberg recommended her to Marc Webb, who directed the live-action Disney's Snow White movie. The upcoming Snow White film is Disney's most recent live-action adaptation of one of its classic animated movies. 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs follows the titular Disney princess who is put into an enchanted sleep by a poisoned apple, and can only be awakened by true love's kiss. Zegler was cast as the iconic Disney princess after starring in Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story adaptation.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live ahead of the release of the live-action Disney film, Zegler reveals how she found out she got cast as Snow White. The actress details that she knew Spielberg recommended her to Webb after they worked together on West Side Story. However, before she officially got offered the role of Snow White, Zegler texted Spielberg to wish him a Happy Father's Day,...

Y2K
Image
Y2K, the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney, is part romcom, part tech-horror, and too unfocused to commit to either one. The turn-of-the-millennium throwback leans too heavily on nostalgia; it’s concerned far more with familiar products and pop-culture details than with how its characters might behave, especially in the face of practical, Frankensteinian tech monsters. Instead, the ensemble are left trying to navigate the movie’s scattershot tone — one that oscillates between comedy and melodrama without fully letting laughs or heartbreak land.

The movie’s flimsy set-ups are accompanied by disconnected pay-offs that emanate from nowhere. For instance, its third act pivots around a key cameo that would have worked like gangbusters had it even been mildly gestured towards. Instead, Y2K moves from scenario to scenario as though its post-apocalyptic saga were being improvised in the moment, further contributing to its haphazard tonal swings.

Control Freak starring Kelly Marie Tran is coming to Hulu this March
Image
March is already looking to be a good month, with a slew of horror content making its way to Hulu, including chilling new releases, classic scares, and must-watch thrillers. Among the new arrivals is the horror thriller Control Freak, starring Kelly Marie Tran. It's a Hulu original movie that should definitely be added to everyone's watchlist.

We first learned about this film back in April 2024 when it was announced that Sweet Tooth actress Kelly Marie Tran and Halloween's Miles Robbins had signed on to star. While an official release date wasn’t provided at the time, it was confirmed that the movie would debut in early 2025. Now, we finally have the release date. Control Freak is slated to be released on Hulu on Thursday, March 13, 2025. With March right around the corner, you want to make sure not to forget the date. Better yet, it's probably best that you mark it down in your calendar.

Kyle Mooney's SNL Audition Boldly Used Lorne Michaels For A Punchline
Image
Every now and then "Saturday Night Live" really surprises me with its castings. Giving Sarah Sherman (better known to the alt-comedy community as Sarah Squirm) a spot on the roster was one example, while Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett's 2013 casting remains one of the best decisions Lorne Michaels ever made.

Back in 2007, the duo launched the comedy group Good Neighbor, along with Nick Rutherford and Dave McCary, and created some of the greatest sketches ever to hit the internet for their "GoodNeighborStuff" YouTube channel. Mooney in particular embodied a sort of subversive alt-comedy brilliance that wasn't all that removed from the offbeat rebelliousness at the heart of another early 2000s comedic touchstone: "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job" — also launched in 2007. Indeed, both Mooney and "Awesome Show" star Tim Heidecker later performed as leather jacket-wearing hack comedian characters, with Mooney's Bruce Chandling eventually appearing for multiple segments on...

A24 Hit Horror Movie With 90% Rotten Tomatoes Score Makes It Onto Netflix Chart Shortly After Platform Debut
Image
A24 has become one of the leading producers in horror over the past decade. Most recently, their horror film Heretic succeeded at the box office and among critics, scoring an impressive 91% Tomatometer. The central Heretic performance by Hugh Grant has also garnered attention at awards ceremonies, earning the actor nominations at the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. 2024 also saw the release of other A24 horror films including Y2K, The Front Room, MaXXXine, and I Saw The TV Glow.

But even before last year, A24 has been cultivating directorial talents in the horror genre for years. They were the distributor behind The Witch, for example, a film that would go on to make stars out of both director Robert Eggers and actor Anya Taylor-Joy. The company added other indie auteurs to its growing list of directorial collaborators, including Clerks helmer Kevin Smith, who directed their wacky 2014 horror film Tusk. Another director...

A24 Made 16 Movies for Less Than 'Red One's Budget
Image
Now that 2024 is over, people are looking back at the year and analyzing the state of cinema based on what's been released, what happened at the box office, and what critics and audiences have gravitated to. Part of this postmortem has been a critique of increasingly bloated budgets for Hollywood movies which are beginning to underperform or outright bomb at the box office, while some films comparatively succeed thanks to minuscule budgets. It's not just a question of quantity vs. quality, as in many cases, studios can produce more quality films for less than the cost of a single, lower-quality film that's more mainstream. The clearest evidence of this is the fact that A24 produced 16 films for nearly the same cost of Red One's budget.

Yes, the holiday action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans had a runaway budget of roughly $250 million, which is how much it cost to make 16 A24 movies.

Hollywood Flashback: 15 Years Ago, Jesse Eisenberg and Sebastian Stan Starred in Fred Durst’s First Film
Image
Long before Jesse Eisenberg and Sebastian Stan both earned 2025 Golden Globe Awards nominations, the pair appeared together in an indie coming-of-age drama that marked the directorial debut of rocker Fred Durst.

The Education of Charlie Banks hit theaters in 2009 starring Eisenberg as Charlie, an Ivy League freshman who is troubled when high school bully Mick (Jason Ritter) mysteriously resurfaces and inserts himself into Charlie’s life in upstate New York.

Filmmaker Peter Care (The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys) was initially attached to direct Peter Elkoff’s script, which was based on the writer’s autobiographical experiences. Ultimately landing in the director’s chair was Durst, who had become an MTV fixture in the late 1990s as the frontman for rap-metal band Limp Bizkit. Durst has cited Matt Dillon’s role in the 1980 feature My Bodyguard as an inspiration for The Education of Charlie Banks, which co-stars Stan as Charlie’s charming college buddy Leo,...

A24 is gearing up to release a new horror film this year. The indie powerhouse will be releasing the horror drama Opus, and it's definitely a movie we'll be catching in theaters! To get people pumped up for its release, a new first-look image from the film was dropped. We shared it below via the Film Updates X account:

New look at horror film ‘Opus’ starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich.

It centers on a writer invited to the compound of an iconic pop star who mysteriously disappeared and hasn't been seen in three decades. There she discovers the twisted machinations behind his grand return. pic.twitter.com/EOJRPsU7Qj

Last year, A24 released five horror movies. They were I Saw the TV Glow, MaXXXine, Heretic, The Front Room and Y2K. However, if we're being honest, only three of those five movies were actually enjoyable to watch: MaXXXine,...

‘Y2K’ Review
Image
Stars: Jaeden Martell, Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Kyle Mooney | Written by Evan Winter | Directed by Kyle Mooney

At the end of 1999 humanity faced the first major crisis of the computer era, the Y2K Bug. For those lucky enough to be too young to remember, it was feared the fact most programs hard coded the “19” and only stored the last two digits of a year in memory would cause them to think the year 2000 was actually 1900 and plunge the world into chaos.

While there were some problems, it ended up being considerably less than the end of the world as we know it. The biggest problem I had to deal with was my copy of WWE 2K20 crashing until I could download and installed a patch. The characters in Saturday Night Live regular turned first-time director Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter’s alternate history...

‘Y2K’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Did Eli And Laura Defeat The Robots?
Image
Y2K is a 2024 horror comedy film that is bafflingly foolish and absurd in its plot and narrative and really made me wonder how Rachel Zegler found herself here after starring in Spielberg’s West Side Story. Entirely centered around late ‘90s nostalgia and the real Y2K scare at the turn of the century, the film follows the tribulations of a teenager, Eli, as humanity faces the scare of becoming slaves to technology and robots, quite literally. Overall, Y2K might be a good watch if you are interested in weird and off-kilter presentations but can be easily avoided by regular audiences because of its paper-thin plot.

Spoiler Alert

What is the film about?

Y2K begins with a close-up of a computer screen, with the programs being run making it very clear that it is the late 1990s. The user connects his computer to the internet using a dial-up network, watches...

A24’s apocalyptic comedy Y2K gets a digital release next week
Y2K (2024)
A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.

The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

A24's 'Y2K' Set to Hit Digital Platforms on December 24
Image
The turnaround from theatrical to digital is faster when a film has a less-than-desirable run at the box office, and this is true of the disaster horror comedy Y2K. The A24 release opened on Dec. 6 and has grossed a mere $3.8 million on a $15 million budget. It didn't light the box office on fire, but its upcoming digital release will likely expose it to more people who missed it in theaters, as you'll be able to watch it at home just in time for the Christmas and holiday break.

Y2K will be released digitally on Dec. 24, which is perfect timing for a couple of reasons. The target audience for the movie will be on holiday break, and they'll likely be looking for something fun to watch at home. It also arrives right before the New Year, which coincides with the film's theme of ringing in the holiday, albeit without the...

Y2K will be available on digital just in time for Christmas 2024
Image
Another one of A24's horror movies from this year will be headed to digital soon. It's the horror-comedy Y2K, and it will be available on digital platforms a little earlier than expected. We're not complaining, though. Now, we have something new to watch before the year wraps up.

According to an A24 press release, Y2K will be released on digital on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, aka Christmas Eve. On this date, you'll be able to rent or purchase the film through digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and AppleTV. In fact, you currently have the option to pre-order the movie on these sites for the price of $24.99 before taxes.

Will Y2K come to streaming? Yes, the horror-comedy will eventually land on a streaming platform. It will most likely drop on Max at a later date because of a multiyear exclusive deal that Warner Bros. Discovery...

Mason Gooding Set to Return for ‘Scream 7’
Image
Mason Gooding is set to return in Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures’ “Scream 7,” reprising his role as Chad Meeks-Martin from “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI” (2023), according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

Gooding joins Neve Campbell and new cast members Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace and Sam Rechner. There’s no official word yet on Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere nor Jasmin Savoy Brown’s involvement, while fellow “core four” members Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega will not be returning.

The seventh installment of the classic meta-horror franchise will be released on Feb. 27, 2026.

It was previously announced that Campbell would return to the series as longtime heroine Sidney Prescott after stepping out of “Scream VI” in 2023 over a pay dispute. Created by Kevin Williamson alongside late director Wes Craven, “Scream” became one of the defining horror series of the 1990s for its satire of slasher film tropes.

Mason Gooding to Return for ‘Scream 7’ (Exclusive)
Image
Mason Gooding will be back for more “Scream.”

Sources tell me that the actor will reprise his role Chad Meeks-Martin for the seventh installment of the horror franchise. Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays Chad’s sister Mindy, has not officially signed on yet.

News of Gooding’s return comes after the film weathered production delays, creative overhauls and cast shakeups. Back in March, Gooding addressed the hiccups. “If it could make money, I guarantee, they’re making it,” he told me at the time. “It’s all about keeping up with what feels like is the best movie for the fans. ‘Scream’ doesn’t exist without the people who enjoy is as much as they do. … If people want it, they will certainly try their best to see it happen.”

Neve Campbell announced she was returning for “Scream 7” after she skipped the sixth film due to a salary dispute.

The Best Film and TV Posters of 2024
Image
Often, the first taste of an upcoming film or television show is by way of its poster. For some films, such as “Jaws” or “The Silence of the Lambs,” a poster can in fact become entwined with its legacy and pave the way for an entire brand to be built. Making a strong first impression with an audience can be tantamount to a project’s success, but how does one capture the essence of an entire story in just one image?

For some, like Nathan Silver’s religious dramedy “Between the Temples,” the key is all in the title. Highlighting the film’s central duo, played by Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane, the two posters for the film feature the heads of both stars mirrored against one another. In this simple, yet unique positioning, the offbeat nature of the entire film, as well as the connection between the two main characters is communicated effortlessly,...

Things Go From Bad To Worse For Kraven The Hunter As New Details About Madame Web's Issues Emerge
Image
Female power took over the box office this weekend as Deadline explains that women turned out in their droves yet again for female-led movies Wicked and Moana 2, both of which have had stellar weekends at the North American box office.

However, not even Aaron Taylor-Johnson's abs were enough to draw them to Sony's latest critical and commercial flop, Kraven the Hunter. That movie's opening weekend estimates continue to plummet, with an $11 million opening looking likely.

With a reported $110 million budget, this is a disaster for Sony and a real wake-up call for a studio that's ignored fans and continued to develop bad Marvel movies like Morbius and Madame Web.

The latter received an overwhelmingly negative response back in February and, outside of the ridicule, left many fans wondering how it could all go so wrong. Like Kraven the Hunter, there were signs of major post-production changes courtesy of some atrocious Adr.

Kyle Mooney Roasts Terrible VHS Tapes From the ‘90s
Image
Keep your Criterion Closet. For pure entertainment value, we’ll take Kyle Mooney’s Plastic Bag O’ VHS Tapes. Rooney showed up on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night to promote his movie Y2K, and in keeping with the ‘90s theme, he ridiculed some of his favorite VHS tapes from back in the day. Here are some of the gems in his collection, both from last night and other Mooney appearances over the years:

Moviemakers could have chosen a title like Fantastic Future or Back in the Day, Mooney said, but instead, they decided to go with the most unexciting choice imaginable: Present Time. The producers also targeted a very narrow demographic: ages 8 to 13. “So if you’re 7 or 14, sorry, guys,” Mooney said.

“They’re like, ‘Trust me. At 14, you think this movie stinks,’” laughed Meyers.

What, Meyers wondered, are those kids doing with the paint guy?

“They learn about baggage transport,...

Y2K's Plot Was Already Done By The Simpsons Over Twenty Years Ago
Image
The following contains spoilers for Y2K, now playing in theatersY2K shares some important plot beats with an episode of The Simpsons from over twenty years ago. Y2K is a time capsule of a movie, leaning into the culture of 1999 for much of its comedy and world-building. The cast of Y2K are largely teenagers who find themselves contending with interpersonal drama and conflict while preparing to celebrate the beginning of the new millennium. It's a fun riff on sci-fi horror films, imagining a world where the Y2K bug led to the rise of malicious machines across the planet.

Y2K leans heavily into the culture of 1999, with references to plenty of different films, video games, music, and TV shows. This includes The Simpsons, with a handful of characters openly referencing the long-running animated show. This gains an additional layer of irony considering that Y2K and The Simpsons actually...

A24's New Horror-Comedy Is Secretly The Best Terminator Film Of The 21st Century
Image
The following contains spoilers for Y2K, now playing in theatersY2K is an unexpectedly ideal spiritual successor to The Terminator franchise. Directed by Kyle Mooney, Y2K is a purposefully goofy and dark comedy focused on a world where the Y2K bug turned machines against humanity. The main characters of Y2K spend the rest of the run-time trying to survive the machine's efforts to capture or kill them, all while working out a way to stop their spread. It's the kind fo plot sci-fi fans have seen before, especially in The Terminator films.

At first glance, Y2K looks incredibly different from the more dramatic and action-packed sci-fi series. However, Y2K's ending actually explores some of the same concepts as The Terminator movies. Both feature the same kind of centralized threat, overarching villain, and thematic core. Y2K even highlights how a fresh genre riff on the concept...

I'm Still Not Over How Good Ghosts' Most Surprising Guest Star Was
Image
While Ghosts has a lot of good guest stars, I still can’t get over how cleverly self-referential the CBS sitcom’s best season 2 guest role proved. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts give the sitcom a lot of opportunities to make historical jokes, but not all of these gags are concerned with far-flung periods in history, like the Viking invasions or the Revolutionary War. Flower’s Ghosts storylines feature a lot of jokes about the counterculture of the ‘60s, while Pete’s obsession with ‘80s pop culture is central to his bond with Sam’s husband Jay.

'Moana 2' Delivers Huge Second Weekend; Leaps into Top 5 Movies of the Year
Image
Moana 2 “stood apart from the crowd” for the second weekend in a row, as the Disney sequel reigned over the box office with an estimated $52 million domestically (per The Numbers). Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s reunion as the beloved Moana and Maui dropped a drastic 63% between its first and second weekends, but still managed to claim the No. 1 spot. And in just 12 days of release, Moana 2 eclipsed the $600-million mark worldwide.

At the time of this writing, Moana 2 has brought in just over $300 million domestically, while making another $300 million overseas. And that total of $600 million helped the animated adventure pass Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($571.8 million) to crack 2024’s highest-grossing films globally after less than two weeks in cinemas.
