I watched this movie and thought the idea is good but why oh why do directors insist on stupid teenagers being stupid. It seems to be an after 2000 thing where teenagers seem to be spolt intitled idiots. In modern disaster films about global warming etc people moan about this that and the other but what do they expect. They caused it! To be honest we deserve everything that is going to happen to us. I'd love to be more positive about the future but as long as corruption and greedy people run this planet well this film theme could be the norm! A good movie should have characters we root for. I'm afraid in this one I didn't care enough about them to want them to survive!
Maybe prescient is the word I'm circling around here? Enter a very French tale about the future imperfect, amounting to more or less an environmental horror yarn evoking those 1970s nature run amuck flicks. The cinematography and editing grab and grip, especially the intro, vibrating almost with a sense of January 6 chaos. But as the tale reveals it's a survive-if-you-can story of fractured family amid a fractured world and Mother Nature will have her day on Anvers! Or something. The narrative traipses plausible ish, and the effects come across as not so unbelievable. My kingdom for a concrete bunker already!
No pun intended - the movie is a bit slow paced, but still has quite the impact. I had no idea this was based on a short movie (I probably would have watched it prior if I had known) ... just saw this on the site here. I assume the general idea was taken and expanded - more time to tell the story. But maybe it works or rather worked, better in the shorter format.
Acting is fine, the effects are good and the movie does look good. Not sure about the ending myself, but things have to end one way or another - overall the movie does not seem to get too much love here - but it is more than decent of course. Just be aware that this demands patience from you the viewer.

After LA NUEE and a short movie also called ACIDE, this French film maker offers the best hopes for the future. I only hope that he won't proceed in stupid comedies. When it was released in movie theaters, I counfounded it with LE REGNE ANIMAL, another French film also more or less in the same kind of stories. Ecological, science fiction.... A genre exploitation French film, but with a big budget. Yes, this director is a good chance for the movie industry to AT LAST offer the audiences something really solid. I only regret the last minutes. I guessed something else. More dramatic, more tragic. His short film ACIDE, back in 2018, was really downbeat, depressing. This longer version should have been the same. Period.
An interesting concept, although the origin was not explained. Either that or since it was in French with subtitles needed, it was not part of the subtitles. This is not rain with acid in it falling, but pretty much acid with some water falling, and for that, the special effects were done quite well. Horses caught outside and running while the rain burned their hides was excellent, as well as metal dissolving when hit by the drops. The scene with the bridge was excellent. And the effect of wide scenes of devastation from the acid was also well done. But they also showed some things damaged that would not be expected to be affected by acids. There were scenes where they were careful not to touch anything wet, as it was highly acidic, and other times it was 'never mind.' And it would be unlikely for a river to become so highly acidic just from some rain. The house that was affected by the acid rain was also well done. What was perhaps the worst part of the movie was the Selma character, a teenager that alternated between annoying and being irritating. There was some comedy, although probably not intended. After having their shoes greatly ruined by walking across acidic grounds, it seemed that they were going to put a thin disposable aluminum pan wrapped around their shoe. That would last seconds before dissolving away. They really needed a scientific advisor to iron out the flaws. It was difficult for me to get past the flaws to care that much about the story.

- PatzerIt is implied early on the acid rains are somehow linked to climate change. However, they are not; they are due to emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, mostly due to the burning of coal and oil and agriculture. Due to air pollution regulation starting in the 80s, acid rains are not a big problem anymore in several continents like Europe or North America, even though it is still ongoing in Russia or China.
