‘The Loudest Voice': Russell Crowe Completely Transforms Into Roger Ailes in First Episodic Image (Photo)
Russell Crowe
Russell Crowe looks nothing like Russell Crowe, but everything like Roger Ailes, in a new photo Showtime released in connection with its upcoming limited series on the former Fox News chairman.

The series, based on former New York magazine reporter Gabriel Sherman’s best-selling book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” is officially titled “The Loudest Voice.” Look at the first episodic photo of Crowe-as-Ailes below:

The eagerly awaited limited series about the former Fox News chairman will debut this summer.

Showtime Is ‘Still Bullish’ on ‘Halo’ After Director Rupert Wyatt’s Exit, Jana Winograde Says
Showtime remains optimistic about its long-gestating “Halo” TV adaption, despite losing its director, Rupert Wyatt, who had to leave the project last month.

“We’re putting a lot of time and energy into it and still pretty bullish on it,” Jana Winograde, co-president of entertainment at Showtime, told TheWrap at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday. “We are definitely in the hunt for a new director right now.” Winograde added that they hope to have someone locked in soon, but wouldn’t divulge who they might be speaking to.

Wyatt was attached to the project to serve as an executive producer and director of multiple episodes, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. “We think of it a little bit like a tentpole movie in the sense that, you know, those huge productions have sometimes directors come in and sometimes writers come in, sometimes they go...

Real Life Top Ten: Sharon Van Etten, Van Morrison, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Greil Marcus
“Real Life Rock Top Ten” is a monthly column by cultural critic and Rs contributing editor Greil Marcus.

1. Dirty Denim, “Meant to Be,” from Dirty Denim Demo Tape (7″ Ep). This is the most arresting thing I’ve heard come out of the radio — in this case, Kalx, the University of California station in Berkeley — since Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Train’s “Hey Soul Sister.” A four-woman band from San Francisco starts up, as if Sleater-Kinney, or more accurately the Corin Tucker-Sarah Dougher-sts spin-off Cadallaca, had...

'MacGyver' Star George Eads to Exit (Exclusive)
George Eads
George Eads is taking another early leave from a CBS drama.

The actor is set to exit the network's MacGyver reboot, on which he has co-starred since the pilot. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the CSI grad had an altercation in October and stormed off the show's Atlanta set despite having several hours of production remaining for the day. Eads is currently in production on the drama, and his final episode is slated to air sometime in 2019.

Representatives for Eads, CBS and producers CBS TV Studios declined comment.

Sources note that the actor had announced ...

“Amazing Grace”

In 1972, a year after their massive hit “Woodstock,” Warner Bros. set out to produce an Aretha Franklin performance documentary. It took 43 years, but producer Alan Elliott completed the film shot by Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack (“Out of Africa”) over two nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

Fox Searchlight Picks Up Shorts From Weighty Toronto Lineup
There is no shortage of Canadian short films. Just ask Tiff Short Cuts programmers Lisa Haller and Jason Anderson. The duo sifted through the 789 Canadian titles with runtimes of 49 minutes or less in order to discover the 20 Canuck titles included in this year’s Short Cuts lineup.

In all 56 films – 20 Canadian titles and 36 international titles – will be featured in the Short Cuts program. The showcase is comprised of stories told in short form in various styles and genres including narrative, documentary, comedy and thriller.

It’s an exciting lineup that even caught the attention of Hollywood. Fox Searchlight has acquired two titles in the program: “Feathers”, directed by A.V. Rockwell, and “Birdie,” from Shelly Lauman. (an international premiere). “It’s largely unprecedented for a studio to venture into the shorts world like this and see this as an opportunity to support emerging filmmakers so we’re hugely excited,” Anderson said,...

Interview: ‘Dead Celebrities’ director Michael Fausti
With the short Dead Celebrities now playing at the film festivals and his debut feature film Exit now in post-production, I got a chance to chat with director Michael Fausti about what we can expect from the two films, blurring the line between fiction and reality and some of the future projects we can expect from Fausti Films.

What inspired you to get into film making originally?

I have always been a fan, particularly of British cinema and it was almost that kind of thing where the more I watched, the more I started to see and recognised the effective use of camera and things like that. I have always been a story teller, but I have never been able to draw, and I am not musical, so filmmaking was the next logical step to tell stories to people. I was inspired by what...

Cat Power Returns With First Album in Six Years, ‘Wanderer’
Cat Power
After a six-year gap between records, Cat Power will return with Wanderer this fall. The record, which artist Chan Marshall (who goes by the name Cat Power) produced entirely by herself, will come out on October 5th.

A one-minute teaser for the album features Marhsall singing the lilting title track, “Wanderer,” against a folky, gospel backing choir as she walks through mountains to a body of water. “Twist of fate would have me sing at your wedding with a baby on my mind and your soul in between,” she sings at one point.

Nashville Season 5 Premiere Recap: Slow Jam the Blues
Marshall Herskovitz
Goodbye, pig’s blood. Hello, ennui.

A spruced-up and pared-down Nashville gets underway this week, with the Season 5 premiere marking both the drama’s move to Cmt network and its slowed-down approach to storytelling, courtesy of new showrunners Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.

The hour — which is the first half of a two-part season opener; Part 2 will air Jan. 5 — finds both of the series’ leading ladies in rough places. Juliette survives her plane crash (no shocker there) but becomes convinced that the injuries she sustains are some kind of karmic payout for past bitchery.

The Jeffrey Dahmer Files (2012)
Nashville Recap: Kiss and Hell
The Jeffrey Dahmer Files (2012)
Two couples got their swerve on in this week’s Nashville. One was a foregone conclusion. The other was an abomination.

Yeah, you heard me, Layla. Abomination! I could maybe get behind your plan to seduce Juliette’s ex-husband if you… had an actual plan to seduce Juliette’s husband. But your to-do list seems like an endless loop of mope, sulk, stalk off and then glom onto Avery’s lips whenever they’re within smooching distance. Even worse: This trajectory seems to be working for you.

Question: Could we get some scoop on Nashville‘s Rayna and Deacon? —Sina

Ausiello: Gladly. Both of the car-crash survivors keep very busy in this week’s episode: Him with getting his life back on track (and starting to face what growing up in an abusive household did to him), and her with screwing her label (figuratively) and former producer Liam (literally also figuratively, but in the fun figurative way).
