A whiskey stream of consciousness review.
Seems like another Hawaiian movie in the Philippines. Silk has her own theme song complete with cheesy 80s TV commercial or Saturday morning cartoon lyrics. At times the score has a little Scooby doo qualities. Pretty good action at times and I'm impressed by Silk's (Played by Jenny Sleighton) athleticism. That and she can handle a shot gun! The story and plot are ho hum, and there isn't enough chemistry between characters to keep interest between the action. The final climactic sequence actually has some fairly realistic shoot outs, but the ending is abrupt. The film would be better if it was more a character study focusing on Silk, and less about its cockamamie story. About the only thing we find out about her is how she came to be named "Silk" (which might be the best line in the film). Not drinking Kessler's with this one. Instead, enjoyed with a dram of baby saz. Cheers!
"Silk" is a 1985 Filipino action pic set in Honolulu, which recently bypassed theatrical release to debut as a video cassette as part of Concorde Pictures' deal with MGM/UA Home Video.
Tough bab Cec Verrell, previously seen as a cop in "Hollywood Vice Squad", title roles as a one-woman SWAT team for the Honolulu police. Episodic screenplay, resembling a tv episode of a cops show, has the police investigating a series of murders, ultimately resolved as drug-related. A corrupt cop teammate of Silk's is involved and the key element is a racke whereby the identities (papers, etc.) of dead people are sold to gangsters for reuse.
Action helmer Cirio H. Santiago does an okay job of staging stunts and shootouts, featuring a combination of American and familiar Filipino thesps. English-language dialog, much of it recorded in direct sound format, is effectively done.
Verrell sports an unusual hairdo: greased-back short haircut which is not punk nor butch. Fortunately, for social occasions her character goes glamorous with curls and dresses instead of the otherwise unbecoming macho look.
Plenty of action in this movie. It's a lot of fun. No vigilante would dare to tangle with this cop. It's the 80's with a movie look like the 70's. Plenty of retro here. Recommend for the nostalgic.
2.5 out of 5 stars.

- Alternative VersionenUS VHS and Code Red DVDs are the edited R-rated versions which trims a few violent scenes- the guy getting stabbed in bed(and the scene where his dead body is discovered) the guy getting killed in the restroom was cut to remove his head being bashed against the toilet along with a close up of his dead body, a shot of one of the killers in a pool of blood and a slight edit to Silk shooting the other killer in the shoulder. Code Red Blu-Ray and the German DVD are both completely uncut.
