Menocchio

This film is slow, but in a way that allows the viewers to make observations about what is said and shown. I felt the place peaceful as the film more or less drifted towards the inevitable doom of the main character. As I share pretty much all the same opinions as him, I truly felt his pain when he tried so hard to convinced himself that he believes in something he cannot believe in. This film is for all the people that have lost their lives in the hands of organized church.

This movie is *SLOW*. Painfully *SLOW*.

I like this slowness when it gives realism to the dialogues of poor, ineducated people of the village, but this pace is also kept for the whole movie which continuosly insists on the same still scene for many seconds. Some scenes have also extremely dark light, so the mix of slowness and darkness can really make viewing this movie an uncomfortable experience at times.

BUT, if you can take this, then you will be rewarded with a moving story of a corageuos, simple, harsh man, fighting for his ideals.

There is nothing more than this in the movie: village life, the oppressive Church and Menocchio.

Enjoy it, if you can. I somehow did.

A film about faith. Or, more significant, about people. Inspired atmosphere, great acting, slow storytelling, the cinematography reminding all virtues of clar- obscur. A simple man and his strong personal religion. The confrontation against Catholic Church. And the long war. His credo, afirmed clear front to his judges. His family. And a final scene reminding Jeanne d'Arc end. All precise and admirable crafted.
