Months before NBC’s Oregon-set medical series concluded its debut season, it was renewed for another run, which launches this fall. St. Denis Medicalreturns this November after getting a Season 2 order in January 2025, and, as expected, fans have been dying to know what’s next for Joyce and the overworked team. Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgincreated the series, which instantly became a favorite among fans and critics alike, as reflected in its 75% and 80% fresh Rotten Tomatoes ratings, respectively.

With the sophomore season of St. Denis Medical a few months away, Ledgin has newly revealed his plans to tell “a couple of out-of-the-hospital stories” that couldn’t fit into Season 1 due to either the budget or the team’s will. The showrunner shared this interesting detail with TVLine, noting that among the upcoming episodes that take place outside the walls of St. Denis, one will follow the docs to a medical conference.

“St. Denis Medical” has been one of the freshest, funniest new comedies of the 2024-2025 TV season, and its co-creators and cast know why: It’s deeply rooted in truth. Creator, showrunner, and writer Eric Ledgin even did his own research to find out if hospital staff really do have sex in the on-call rooms, as shown on so many TV medical dramas.

Ledgin was joined by co-creator and writer Justin Spitzer and actors Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi for an IndieWire Consider This Live Event moderated by actress D’Arcy Carden at Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood on May 29. This was an official TV Academy FYC event.

The theme of the evening kept coming back to truth. In fact, the very idea for the show came from some real-life experiences Ledgin had over the years.

“It would feel stupid to walk away and do something that’s less joyful,” expresses Eric Ledgin about why he has built his career around television comedy. The writer, who is one of the two creators of the NBC mockumentary series St. Denis Medical alongside Justin Spitzer, initially wanted to “make movies that are important,” but got “pushed into comedy by a friend.” He now revels in the format because “half hour gives you limitless opportunities to do whatever you want.” The creative duo recently sat down with Gold Derby to discuss the origins of the hospital-set series, their favorite episodes from the first season, and more.

“It was, like, four hours after we were canceled, and that’s no joke.” That's how long it took for Wendi McLendon-Covey to receive the first script for St. Denis Medical after the demise of her long-running comedy The Goldbergs. As the actress tells Gold Derby, she read the pilot with no expectation of making a series commitment, but she says she became hooked because her character, Joyce, is “such an oddball and reminded me of so many women supervisors that I had working other jobs.” The transition from one show to another did prove challenging, though, as she shot the first episode of the NBC medical mockumentary while promoting the series finale of her family sitcom and felt like she was “cheating” on her television family. “For me, it was just an opportunity to see a bunch of friends in the same room and kick it and have a ball,” shares David Alan Grier about his Critics Choice Award nomination for his role on St. Denis Medical. The actor received the acknowledgment last December for the first season of the NBC mockumentary, in which he stars as the curmudgeonly but knowledgeable Doctor Ron.

Grier knew from the description of the character alone that he wanted to join the series. The seasoned TV viewer probably knows that; from “E.R.” to “Grey’s Anatomy” to “The Pitt,” fictional hospitals are always teeming with attractive people and tense relationships — which is what makes them such fruitful narrative territory. NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” is no exception, as the cast and creative team told IndieWire as part of a virtual panel for Universal Studio Group’s Usg University.

“I always wondered: those medical dramas where people have sex in the on-call rooms, is that a real thing?” showrunner Eric Ledgin said. “My friend who’s an oncological surgeon assured me it’s a very real thing.”

The NBC medical comedy closed out its freshman run on Tuesday night, with a literal perfect storm of circumstances at the hospital forcing Alex (Allison Tolman) to scurry back and forth between helping her fellow nurses and sitting by her husband’s side for his imminent vasectomy on a different floor of the building. McClendon-Covey is a previous Emmy nominee as a producer for the 2022 Best TV Movie contender Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon. NBCUniversal is kicking off Emmy Awards season by bringing its stars together in one room!

The entertainment company hosted an Emmy season kick-off luncheon on Friday afternoon (April 11) at the Sls Hotel in Los Angeles.

The annual event celebrated the talent behind NBCUniversal’s Emmy-eligible shows. This includes shows and movies on NBC and Peacock, as well as shows that Universal Content Productions has made for other streamers, like Netflix’s A Man on the Inside and Max’s Hacks.

Country music icon and sitcom veteran Reba McEntire has another hit show on her hands, 18 years after her first sitcom, Reba, ended in 2007. McEntire’s newest venture, Happy’s Place, which airs on NBC and streams on Peacock, is in the midst of its first season and, per Deadline, has just been given the green light for Season 2.

Happy’s Place, a multi-camera comedy that premiered in October 2024, follows Bobbie (McEntire) as she inherits a tavern from her late father. Unbeknownst to her, she learns that she’s not the only owner of the business. Bobbie discovers that she has a much younger half-sister she never knew existed, named Isabella, played by Belissa Escobedo.

Reba alum Melissa Peterman, plays Gabby in the series, a bartender who is full of drama. The first season also saw Steve Howey (Shameless), who played Van Montgomery on Reba, guest star in an episode of Happy’s Place.

NBC’s so happy with Happy’s Place season one’s ratings that they’ve officially renewed the half-hour comedy for season two. Starring Reba McEntire, the popular comedy’s premiere episode has drawn in 17.6 million viewers since its premiere on October 18, 2024. The network reports the workplace comedy’s increased its Friday nights at 8pm Et/Pt viewership year-over-year by 54%.

The season one cast includes Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk, and Rex Linn. NBC hasn’t confirmed if all series regulars will return for the second season, nor have they announced the number of season two episodes. In November, NBC upped the season one order by five, bringing the total to 18 episodes. The renewal announcement was released with four new episodes to go in the first season.

Actor Chris Pine’s next role will be taking him Nowhere Fast - literally. The Wonder Woman actor will star in Nowhere Fast, a new crime thriller written and directed by Fargoand Legion creator Noah Hawley, per Variety.

Pine has been cast as the lead in Nowhere Fast,billed as a Texas crime thriller that follows a small-town criminal who accidentally kills the nephew of his boss. Hawley most recently directed the forthcoming Alien: Earth series. His television production company, 26 Keys Productions, is producing the new movie.

It takes one white lie and blows it up into an entire production, capturing all the zaniness therein. But the catalyst for all that, interestingly enough, is one of the biggest pet peeves when it comes to health care: the cost. The episode takes something everybody hates and proves exactly why everyone hates it, by using the comedy trick of exaggeration.
