With the sophomore season of St. Denis Medical a few months away, Ledgin has newly revealed his plans to tell “a couple of out-of-the-hospital stories” that couldn’t fit into Season 1 due to either the budget or the team’s will. The showrunner shared this interesting detail with TVLine, noting that among the upcoming episodes that take place outside the walls of St. Denis, one will follow the docs to a medical conference.

‘The Pitt,’ ‘Brilliant Minds’ Showrunners on The Revival of the Medical Drama: “People Need Hope Now”
Image
Why are medical dramas having a resurgence this Emmys season? The showrunners of some of the hottest series, which this year include Brilliant Minds, Doc, Doctor Odyssey, The Pitt, Pulse and Watson, have some theories (apart from the fact that they’re just “quite good,” says The Pitt’s R. Scott Gemmill).

“Medical shows introduce a problem and provide a solution, and in doing so offer hope,” Gemmill tells THR. “I think people need hope now more than they have in a while.” And Watson’s showrunner Craig Sweeny agrees: “Audiences are craving the hope and positivity that are baked into the genre.”

The ‘St. Denis Medical’ Team Pinpoint the Power of Mockumentaries: ‘Your Reactions Are the Punchline’ — Watch
Image
“St. Denis Medical” has been one of the freshest, funniest new comedies of the 2024-2025 TV season, and its co-creators and cast know why: It’s deeply rooted in truth. Creator, showrunner, and writer Eric Ledgin even did his own research to find out if hospital staff really do have sex in the on-call rooms, as shown on so many TV medical dramas.

Ledgin was joined by co-creator and writer Justin Spitzer and actors Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi for an IndieWire Consider This Live Event moderated by actress D’Arcy Carden at Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood on May 29. This was an official TV Academy FYC event.

Watch the full panel above.

The theme of the evening kept coming back to truth. In fact, the very idea for the show came from some real-life experiences Ledgin had over the years.

‘St. Denis Medical’ creators Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer discuss navigating the ‘peaks and valleys of comedy’
Image
“It would feel stupid to walk away and do something that’s less joyful,” expresses Eric Ledgin about why he has built his career around television comedy. The writer, who is one of the two creators of the NBC mockumentary series St. Denis Medical alongside Justin Spitzer, initially wanted to “make movies that are important,” but got “pushed into comedy by a friend.” He now revels in the format because “half hour gives you limitless opportunities to do whatever you want.” The creative duo recently sat down with Gold Derby to discuss the origins of the hospital-set series, their favorite episodes from the first season, and more.

St. Denis Medical boasts a unique tone. It is a comedic mockumentary about the doctors, nurses, and administrative staff at a regional hospital in Oregon, but it also often includes moments of true stakes and dramatic heft. “It’s a comedy and it’s comedy forward,...

‘She’s got tunnel vision’: Wendi McLendon-Covey reveals what she loves most about her character Joyce on ‘St. Denis Medical’
Image
“It was, like, four hours after we were canceled, and that’s no joke.” That's how long it took for Wendi McLendon-Covey to receive the first script for St. Denis Medical after the demise of her long-running comedy The Goldbergs. As the actress tells Gold Derby, she read the pilot with no expectation of making a series commitment, but she says she became hooked because her character, Joyce, is “such an oddball and reminded me of so many women supervisors that I had working other jobs.” The transition from one show to another did prove challenging, though, as she shot the first episode of the NBC medical mockumentary while promoting the series finale of her family sitcom and felt like she was “cheating” on her television family. (Watch our full interview above).

‘I know this dude!’: David Alan Grier explains why he leapt at the chance to play a ‘burned-out’ doctor on ‘St. Denis Medical’
Image
“For me, it was just an opportunity to see a bunch of friends in the same room and kick it and have a ball,” shares David Alan Grier about his Critics Choice Award nomination for his role on St. Denis Medical. The actor received the acknowledgment last December for the first season of the NBC mockumentary, in which he stars as the curmudgeonly but knowledgeable Doctor Ron.

Grier knew from the description of the character alone that he wanted to join the series. He remembers reading the script by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, which characterized Ron as “burned out” and “the oldest staff member” in the hospital, and thinking, “I know this dude!” Despite the laughs inherent in that type of guy, the performer knew there would be heft to the role, too. “I think he’s a really good doctor. It’s just the system won, for the most part,...

The Cast and Crew of ‘St. Denis Medical’ Found Joy and Warmth in the Show’s Hospital Setting
Image
“Hospitals are very sexy places.”

The seasoned TV viewer probably knows that; from “E.R.” to “Grey’s Anatomy” to “The Pitt,” fictional hospitals are always teeming with attractive people and tense relationships — which is what makes them such fruitful narrative territory. NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” is no exception, as the cast and creative team told IndieWire as part of a virtual panel for Universal Studio Group’s Usg University.

“I always wondered: those medical dramas where people have sex in the on-call rooms, is that a real thing?” showrunner Eric Ledgin said. “My friend who’s an oncological surgeon assured me it’s a very real thing.”

That was the spark for Season 1, Episode 8 of the show, which opens with the St. Denis staff being summoned to a meeting after two of them are caught in the aforementioned on-call room. Hospital administrator Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) hopes it’ll be a quick and efficient conversation,...

‘It keeps me on my toes’: ‘St. Denis Medical’ star Allison Tolman on walking a fine line between zany and ‘incredibly heartfelt’
Image
“I’ve always wanted to do a mockumentary,” admits Allison Tolman about what immediately drew her to St. Denis Medical. The self-professed Christopher Guest fan had heard word about the project and told her team to get their hands on the script. Once they did, the premiere episode by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer did not disappoint: “I was already pretty excited about it just based on the format, but then, read the first script and was like, ‘Oh, this is really lovely. The jokes are funny, the characters are interesting, they really know how to make this format sing,’” she recounts. (Watch our full interview above).

Tolman plays supervising nurse Alex in the new workplace comedy series, which is set in a regional hospital in Oregon. Though the character struggles with setting work-life boundaries, especially considering that she has two young children at home, Alex serves as the calm-ish...

"No One Said Anything": Original 'Fargo' Star Reveals Why She Didn't Return
Image
Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Tolman never came back after Season 2, but we now know this wasn’t due to a lack of interest. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Tolman was asked about her time on Fargo, and she spoke about it fondly but also recalled how difficult it was to stand on the sidelines after departing the show:

Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from “This Place Is Our Everything,” the Season 1 finale of NBC’s “St. Denis Medical,” now streaming on Peacock.

A big change is coming to St. Denis Medical, just as long as the ceiling doesn’t cave in.

All season, hospital executive director Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) has gone to great lengths, often to the chagrin of her employees, to bring renown and resources to the Oregon hospital. But in the Season 1 finale, she took a major step in that direction, securing $10 million to further her plans, even though she immediately starts promising it away to the needs of others. But when she is sidelined by an injured ankle, she takes the quieter moment to confide in Ron (David Alan Grier) that she already has her own vision for the windfall –– to open a birthing center at St. Denis to make it the destination for...

St. Denis Medical Boss Reveals the ‘Bad Idea’ He Was Convinced to Drop From the Season 1 Finale
Image
St. Denis Medical has scrubbed out for the season, with a notably different ending than showrunner Eric Ledgin had initially planned. And he’s totally cool with that.

The NBC medical comedy closed out its freshman run on Tuesday night, with a literal perfect storm of circumstances at the hospital forcing Alex (Allison Tolman) to scurry back and forth between helping her fellow nurses and sitting by her husband’s side for his imminent vasectomy on a different floor of the building. (“Ooh, a Mrs. Doubtfire situation. That always ends well,” Ron warned Alex of her attempt to be in both places.

Ledgin took the stage March 7 at SXSW's Film & TV Festival alongside Universal Television's EVP of comedy development Jim Donnelly to chart the series' comedic creative journey in a panel titled "Pitch to Screen," moderated by Gold Derby's editor-in-chief. St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 11, "Nobody Even Mentions the Brownies," is a classic TV sitcom hour. But the catalyst for all that, interestingly enough, is one of the biggest pet peeves when it comes to health care: the cost. The episode takes something everybody hates and proves exactly why everyone hates it, by using the comedy trick of exaggeration.
