It Has a 3.9 IMDb Rating, but This Bruce Willis Movie Still Managed to Top Paramount+ Streaming Charts
Image
Bruce Willis’s career took an unfortunate dip as he approached his retirement, with 2022’s Gasoline Alley not leaving much of an impact when it was first released. However, streaming services have a way of surprising everyone, turning seemingly bad movies into global sensations. The film seems to have found a second life on Paramount+, reaching the number 1 spot of most-watched films on the platform on August 4th, according to Flixpatrol.

This is surprising on many levels, since the film actually performed very poorly when it was first released. Even though it was released in theaters and had many big names, the film was not watched by a lot of people. Those who did watch it didn’t seem to like it, with the film possessing a 3.9 score on IMDb. Considering this, one cannot help but wonder what is causing the film to suddenly become so popular now.

Nadine Crocker on Continue, the Movie Raising Money for Suicide Prevention
Image
We spoke with Nadine Crocker leading up to the release of Continue, an emotionally raw drama film that sees the talented writer-director in front of the camera as well, playing the harrowing and complex lead character. "I think the girl who started that journey and thought she could wear 33 hats was, like, very naive, but I'm really happy she was because it was a fun experience," Crocker recently told MovieWeb.

Crocker plays Dean, an emotionally troubled young woman who is already suffering a self-destructive mental health episode as Continue kicks off. The overall story spotlights mental health struggles and suicide prevention, and the finished product was released Sep. 6 at a pertinent time. "[The producers and I] unanimously were like, 'We need to let this film sit for a little bit until we get to September because that's World Suicide Prevention Month,'" Crocker said. "I knew that that was the time to put this film out.

Continue Review: Rocky Passion Project Spotlights Suicide Prevention
Image
Just in time to highlight National Suicide Prevention Month, actress and budding filmmaker Nadine Crocker (Cabin Fever) has put on "33 hats" for her new film, as she recently told us. Yes, she wrote and directed Lionsgate's Continue, in addition to playing the powerful and emotionally charged lead role. You dont even need to do the research to confirm Crockers real-life personal connection to the spellbinding narrative source material here. Its just that palpable, with a raw and vulnerable turn that screams authenticity. As an added bonus, yes, Continue is indeed based on her life and explores her past struggles with suicide and mental health.

Hey, even superhero movies are exploring mental health now and Crocker, who also directed Desperation Road with Mel Gibson not too long ago, shows promise as a helmer of features with this latest passion project. The Oscar-winning stunner Girl, Interrupted might come to mind as...

Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt, and Edward Woodward in The Wicker Man (1973)
Fear The Night - Jennie Kermode - 18627
Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt, and Edward Woodward in The Wicker Man (1973)
His horrible mistake with The Wicker Man aside, Neil Labute has a history of making interesting films about uglier aspects of gender relations. He was exploring toxic masculinity long before it became fashionable, and he’s back on that topic here. Though it’s far from his most nuanced work, this home invasion horror tale has a few interesting things to say about expressions of masculinity and femininity within groups of women.

The occasion on which we meet these women is a hen party being held for Rose (Highdee Kuan) at a remote property which was owned by her parents and is now used for holiday rentals. The first people we meet are her older sisters: Tess (Maggie Q), a veteran of combat in Fallujah who has struggled to adjust to civilian life, and Beth (Kat Foster), a deeply conventional middle class woman who is continually embarrassed by this. They are joined.

Desperation Road trailer: Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald defend the truth in a Southern Noir thriller
Image
Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.

“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

The distributor acquired the film directed by Li Ruijun after it premiered in Berlin in March, 2022 to glowing reviews, see Deadlines’s here. Hai Quing and Wu Renlin star as a middle-aged couple in a rural province encouraged to marry by their families, who see them as a burden. Love and respect slowly as they scratch out a living of extreme hardship working the land. A 95% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fear the Night Review
Image
It’s curious to see writer-director Neil Labute merge into the 2020s with power plays between genders again, first in House of Darkness and now Fear the Night, which hits theaters and digital platforms July 21. Avid filmgoers no doubt appreciated Labute’s deep dive into the messiness of human emotion and behaviors in films like The Shape of Things and In the Company of Men back in the 1990s. His work after those two great films never felt quite as elevated, however some have been downright engaging nonetheless.

Fear the Night falls nicely into that slot. It’s a throwback to those 1970s action thrillers that so often filled the screen and, for some reason, have made a resurgence in the early 2020s. Those were B movies, to be sure, and Fear the Night feels like another one. Hey, there’s room for all kinds of “art” on screen. But...

Gia Crovatin and Travis Hammer Discuss Their '70s-Style Thriller Fear the Night
Image
Note: This interview was accomplished prior to the start of the SAG strike. When eight women gather for a festive bachelorette party at a remote farmhouse, there’s bound to be some fun and games. Well, games of a different sort in Neil Labute’s new film, Fear the Night. Labute, who gave birth to In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, Nurse Betty, and other film and television projects, delivers a lean, retro 1970s-style thriller here with Maggie Q at the helm.

The gist and grit of the story is that this seemingly routine bachelorette party is soon interrupted by the arrival of masked intruders. These fellas are after something, of course, and as they surround the house, suddenly they’re shooting arrows into the place — and the guests. Thank goodness Tess (Maggie Q) is there. She’s a military vet, but can she lead these women...

‘Fear the Night’ Review
Image
Stars: Maggie Q, Kat Foster, Highdee Kuan, James Carpinello, Travis Hammer | Written and Directed by Neil Labute

Fear the Night opens with a confrontation, though not the kind you might expect from a home invasion thriller. Tes is going through a trunk full of scrapbooks in the attic when her sister Beth appears and snaps at her for going through her stuff. Tes points out these are family heirlooms, not hers only for the subject to be changed to Tes swearing in front of Beth’s daughter despite the fact the girl isn’t even in the house at the moment.

These dysfunctional siblings have been brought together by a bachelorette party although it’s not exactly clear why. It’s obvious that Tes, who is suffering from Ptsd and struggling to readjust to society, likes these people about as much as they like her. After the obligatory run-in with...

Fear the Night Review
Image
Plot: A bachelorette party being held in an isolated farmhouse is crashed by a group of homicidal home invaders.

Review: In some circles, writer/director Neil Labute tanked his reputation by making the goofball 2006 remake of The Wicker Man – which is a shame, because when he first arrived on the scene he was a best known for making emotionally devastating dramas and dark comedies like In the Company of Men and Your Friends & Neighbors. His latest film is the home invasion thriller Fear the Night… and while it’s not on the level of his well-regarded dramas and dark comedies, it also doesn’t fall to the depths of the Wicker Man remake. (Which star Nicolas Cage insists was always meant to be a comedy as well.) So it may be best to refer to this one as “From the director of Lakeview Terrace”. It’s not great, it’s not bad.

Spoonful Of Sugar - Jennie Kermode - 18192
Kat Foster
So imagine you’re looking for a nanny. This person is going to be alone with your child, and what’s more, you child is chronically ill. Do you choose someone who looks a lot younger than she claims to be, presents no documents, acknowledges that she has no experience, says upfront that she doubts your child’s illness is real, and immediately begins treating him in a possessive way? If you do, then what you probably need is Child Services.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that Rebecca (Kat Foster) and Jacob (Myko Olivier) make this mistake, because they’re clearly not that smart to begin with. Their description of the allergies from which young Johnny (Danilo Crovetti) suffers is patently absurd. Nobody can wear nickel jewellery around him? Nickel (oxide) only causes allergy with direct contact over time and, though unpleasant, isn’t actually dangerous. An...

Spoonful Of Sugar Review: A Not So Sweet Domestic Horror Story [Fantastic Fest]
Image
Whatever innocence is introduced in Mercedes Bryce Morgan's "Spoonful of Sugar" with the hummed tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine" and glimpses of Christmas candy canes rots away like a forgotten fruit that rolls forever out of sight. Imagine "Mary Poppins" breakneck twisting into the darkness of "Orphan" or "Hard Candy." Leah Saint Marie's screenplay explores a drug-induced coming-of-age tale about a supposed hair-twirling babysitter's virgin's sexuality, but that's before Saint Marie balances out storytelling sweetness with an avalanche-pour of salty malevolence. "Spoonful of Sugar" is bone-chilling, knee-buckling nastiness that punishes every character with zero compassion — this ain't the twinkly-eyed fairy tale Morgan deceptively sells at the movie's onset.

Morgan Saylor stars as ponytailed and supposedly 21-year-old Millicent, who's just been hired by accomplished author Rebecca (Kat Foster) to babysit her allergy grab-bag of a son, Johnny (Danilo Crovetti). Millicent claims she's taking a summer hiatus from studies...

‘The Rookie: Feds’: Britt Robertson Joins ABC Spinoff Series
Image
Exclusive: Britt Robertson has been tapped as a series regular on ABC’s new hourlong series The Rookie: Feds, headlined by Niecy Nash-Betts.

Co-created by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, The Rookie: Feds stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The spinoff was introduced in a two-part arc on Season 4 of The Rookie, where Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the LA division of the FBI enlist the help of Simone Clark when one of her former students is a suspect in a terror attack.

2022-23 ABC New Series

Robertson joins Nash-Betts; Frankie Faison, who plays Christopher “Cutty” Clark; and Felix Solis, who guest-starred as Special Agent Matthew Garza in the two Rookie episodes, which served as backdoor pilots for The Rookie: Feds. All three are continuing on the new series as series regulars.

On the new series, Robertson will play Laura Stensen. She is the “black sheep” of a family of brilliant academics and the youngest person ever allowed into the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit. But after discovering that her boyfriend had been cheating on her with her best friend, Laura fell into a slump – how could a criminal profiler miss that the people closest to her were liars? Given a lifeline in Garza’s new unit, Laura’s ready to throw her socially awkward, workaholic, book-smart self-back into the job, hoping to get her mojo back.

ABC New Series Teaser Trailers: ‘Alaska’, ‘The Rookie: Feds’, ‘Not Dead Yet’

Hawley and Winter executive produce The Rookie: Feds with Mark Gordon, Nash-Betts, Fillion, Michelle Chapman, Bill Norcross and Corey Miller. Entertainment One is the lead studio and international distributor of the series, a co-production with ABC Signature. The Rookie: Feds is set to premiere in the fall, airing in the Tuesday 10 Pm slot behind Bachelor in Paradise.

Robertson most recently shot features The Re-Education of Molly Singer and About Fate. She previously recurred on ABC’s Big Sky, appeared on the Shondaland ABC drama For the People and played the title role in Netflix’s Girlboss, among other credits. Robertson is repped by Innovative Artists.

ABC’s New Series ‘Rookie: Feds’ & ‘Not Dead Yet’ Undergo Casting Changes As Part Of Creative Tweaks
Image
Exclusive: TV pilots’ role is to serve as a prototype for a series. Sometimes, networks make changes to that prototype when they proceed to mass production with a series order, which unfortunately affects talent. Two of ABC’s newly picked-up series, The Rookie‘s Feds spinoff, headlined by Niecy Nash, and the Gina Rodriguez-starring comedy Not Dead Yet, are going though the process this year.

Nash was one of four actors who guest starred in the two-episode arc on The Rookie, which served as backdoor pilot for The Rookie: Feds. Three of them, Nash, who plays the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy, Frankie Faison and Felix Solis, will continue on the new series. The fourth, Kat Foster, will not as her role, Special Agent Casey Fox, will not be moving forward.

The changes are more significant on ABC’s new comedy series Not Dead Yet where only half...

‘Gasoline Alley’ Review
Image
Stars: Bruce Willis, Devon Sawa, Luke Wilson, Kat Foster, Kenny Wormald, Rick Salomon, Sufe Bradshaw | Written by Edward Drake, Tom Sierchio | Directed by Edward Drake

Gasoline Alley, (no relation to the classic comic strip), is the fifth collaboration between director Edward Drake and star Bruce Willis. Normally it’s a good thing when a director and performer can work together as a team. But when that teaming produces Breach, Cosmic Sin, Apex and American Siege one has to question why the studio keeps teaming them up.

Ex-con Jimmy Jayne is in a bit of trouble. He lost a lighter with the name of his tattoo parlour, Gasoline Alley, on it. Somebody did find it, but it was Detective Freeman (Bruce Willis) and his partner Detective Vargas. And they found it in the presence of several dead hookers, one of whom he was seen with the night she died. All of...

Crime Thriller 'Gasoline Alley' Trailer with Bruce Willis & Luke Wilson
Bruce Willis at an event for The Expendables (2010)
"I've got someone trying to pin a bunch of murders on me..." "In broad daylight?" Another month, another Bruce Willis movie. Make it stop!! Saban + Paramount have revealed an official trailer for Gasoline Alley, another boring Los Angeles crime thriller rehashing the same plot for the 5000th time. Some people were found dead, the cops think it was this guy, he says he's being framed. Yadda yadda. A man implicated in a triple homicide begins his own investigation. He enlists the two detectives on his tail in order to expose a conspiracy, or whatever. Starring Devon Sawa, Bruce Willis, and Luke Wilson, with Kat Foster, Sufe Bradshaw, Johnny Dowers, Kenny Wormald, Rick Salomon, Steve Eastin, Tracey "The Doc" Curry. This looks so bad. I wish Bruce would just stop making these, we really don't need them anymore... Here's the official trailer (+ poster) Edward Drake's Gasoline Alley, direct from YouTube: Bruce Willis,...

2021 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Nadine Crocker’s Continue
Image
A project that comes from a deep, personal place, for her directorial debut, actress Nadine Crocker turned the lens inwards for Continue and surrounded herself with the likes of Emily Deschanel, Shiloh Fernandez, Analeigh Tipton, Kat Foster, Annapurna Sriram and Dale Dickey. Production began in November of 2019 with the backing of Cassian Elwes and so if Sundance programmers are looking for a subject-related drama with punch, they might consider this could easily fall in a SXSW slot.

Gist: It follows a girl (Crocker) suffering from depression who is forced to get her life together when she is taken involuntarily to a mental institution, after trying to follow in her father’s footsteps, but failing her suicide attempt.…...

Official Trailer for Crazy Tennis Comedy 'First One In' with Kat Foster
Karina Arroyave, Catherine Curtin, Emy Coligado, Kat Foster, Josh Segarra, Alana O'Brien, and Aneesh Sheth in First One In (2020)
"If we don't win, I lose everything..." An official trailer has debuted for an indie comedy titled First One In, marking the feature directorial debut of writer / director Gina O'Brien. The film is about a woman who tries to get hired as a real estate agent, but must be a tennis pro to land the job. "During the day in tennis clubs across America, millions of women gather to hit balls at each other. I'm one of them," O'Brien says. "We wear trendy outfits, visors, and elbow and knee braces. We drink coconut water and eat protein bars and take acetaminophen. We are middle-aged women of all shapes, sizes, and athletic ability. Our personal lives may differ from one another, but on some 250,000 courts in the U.S., we're all tennis players. Many of us aren't good, but the competition is as fierce as the pros, sort of, and it's fun material for a screenplay.
