This Netflix espionage thriller should be on your watchlist if you’re into Slow Horses.(Photo Credit –Netflix)
If you’ve watched and enjoyed Slow Horses on Apple TV+ and are on the hunt for another spy-action thriller, you’ve come to the right place. This time, however, the series isn’t on Apple TV+; it’s available on Netflix. It’s titled The Recruit, and as of now, two seasons are available.
The protagonist of The Recruit is a young lawyer working for the CIA. Unlike Slow Horses, where the main character’s grandfather is a powerful figure in the intelligence agency and can offer him some level of protection, The Recruit features a lead with no such advantage. He has a distant relationship with his mother, and his father, a soldier, died in combat.

One of the (many) shows to suffer the fatal blow of the Netflix cancellation axe could return as a movie. Beginning back in 2022, the action thriller spy series The Recruit was cut down in its prime after the streamer revealed that Season 2, which debuted back in January, would be the show’s last. Now, creator Alexi Hawley has confirmed his hopes for a comeback with a The Recruit movie.
Speaking with Deadline, The Recruit creator, writer, and executive producer Alexi Hawley, who is also behind the police procedural hit series The Rookie with Nathan Fillion, still has hope that the spy thriller series will be given the opportunity to wrap things up with a movie. But it’s too soon to know if it’ll happen for sure.

Even 35 years after its short-lived run on ABC, the late Steven Bochco's and William M. Finkelstein's "Cop Rock" is a tough sell. "Cop Rock" was about a group of Los Angeles police officers who traversed the city investigating crimes, arresting perps, and facing the every drama of living in the City of Angels. The cops were played by a talented ensemble that included Anne Bobby, Ronny Cox, James McDaniel, Paul McCrane, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Cch Pounder, and several others.
The odd angle was that "Cop Rock" was also a musical, featuring several new songs — some composed by Randy Newman — in every episode. The cop characters, as well as the criminals, would sing about their pained lives of crime/crimefighting, and occasionally dance. It's a weird idea. "Live-action musical cop series" is an elevator pitch that would be turned down everywhere.

Daredevil: Born Again kicked off with a bang, and the latest episode will leave fans talking. The newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin, respectively, in a continuation of the original Daredevil series. While fans might have been worried given that Daredevil previously went through some of the most iconic Daredevil stories, including "The Elektra Saga" and even put its own spin on the "Born Again" series that the Disney+ series draws its name from, the creators pulled from various corners of the Daredevil universe to craft this latest season.
Daredevil: Born Again features plenty of callbacks and Easter eggs from both the original Daredevil series and comics, but it also features some interesting nods and references to the larger MCU and the various heroes that occupy New York. From The Punisher,...

Meetings of fascists, young skinheads, Elvis, experiences with such legendary directors as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino and Werner Herzog, and the media circus around Oscar nominees — those were just some of the topics addressed by British actor Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Rob Roy, Lie to Me) during a master class at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival on Wednesday.

Quite a few artists have contributed to the Marvel comic "Daredevil" over the years, lending their own unique visual style to the ongoing trials of blind lawyer and vigilante Matt Murdock. David Mack, however, might just be the most unique of them all. Mack uses a mixed media approach to his art, combining watercolor, ink, and pencil (sometimes with collage materials like printed paper or even Scrabble letters) to create wildly inventive sequential images that tell powerful stories. His most well-known work is in "Daredevil," where he's served as both an artist and writer, co-creating the character of Echo with Joe Quesada and contributing to some of the very best arcs in the series (like the incredible "Wake Up").

Spider-Man will not be showing up in "Daredevil: Born Again," but watching the series, I can feel some influence from Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" films. How so? "Spider-Man" and its sequels are as heightened as the original comics, whereas "Daredevil" prides itself on being a gritty crime drama. It comes down to the moments spent with ordinary New Yorkers.
The original "Daredevil" killed off journalist Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall), a longtime supporting character in the "Daredevil" comics. That forced the show to plug Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) into Urich's role whenever the show needed a Pov in New York media. "Daredevil: Born Again" is more directly continuing Urich's legacy: his niece, Bb Urich (Genneya Walton), is an independent reporter running a web show called the Bb Report.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Episode 1 and 2 of Daredevil: Born Again.Since it's both a continuation of the original Daredevil and a new chapter in Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox)'s life, Daredevil: Born Againfeatures a collection of characters old and new. One of these new characters immediately stood out to me: Bb Urich (Genneya Walton), a young reporter who takes to the streets via her webshow, the Bb Report. If Bb's last name sounds familiar, that's because Daredevil Season 1 introduced her uncle, Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall). Ben was a crusading reporter who intended to reveal that Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) had a hand in most of New York's criminal activity. Though he runs into a wall at his job, Ben decides to launch his own blog in the episode "The Ones We Leave Behind", but Fisk ended up killing him for discovering his ill mother.

Netflix’s The Recruit was the perfect mix of action, humor, and chaos, led by Noah Centineo as the unlucky but resourceful CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks. Across two seasons, the show delivered high-stakes missions, unexpected twists, and plenty of moments where Owen found himself in way over his head.
Season 2 took things to the next level, moving the action to South Korea and introducing new characters like Teo Yoo’s dangerous and mysterious operative. It was the kind of spy dramedy that kept you on the edge of your seat one minute and laughing the next, exactly what made it so fun to watch.

And yet, despite all that, Netflix decided to pull the plug after just two seasons. Even with strong viewership numbers and a dedicated fanbase, The Recruit joins the ever-growing list of shows canceled way too soon.

Netflix's "Daredevil" was great and Charlie Cox's iteration of the character is still the best thing to come out of those shows, but one of its biggest mistakes was killing Ben Urich, legendary ally to the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, played by Vondie Curtis-Hall. Failing to make it to even the end of the first season, the Daily Bulletin reporter was brutally murdered by Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) in one of the villain's most disturbing moments. It was a choice that, while impactful to the story, really felt like offing the very similar Commissioner Gordon from Batman or snuffing out J. Jonah Jameson before he even gets to call Spidey a wall-crawling menace. Thankfully, as revealed in the all-new "Daredevil: Born Again" series, the new show is honoring the legacy of Urich by introducing his niece, Bb, to carry on her uncle's work.

Daredevil Season 3 was an emotional rollercoaster that left fans with jaws dropped, minds blown, and an unhealthy urge to start shadowboxing in their living rooms. Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, had the city of New York wrapped around his little finger, managing to wiggle his way out of prison, put on a suit so fine it could cut glass, and even marry his beloved Vanessa.
Meanwhile, Matt Murdock was on the brink of losing everything, his faith, his friends, and his very identity as Daredevil. But then, plot twists flew in from every direction! A dying FBI agent threw a legal grenade at Fisk, exposing his crimes. Foggy Nelson took a break from being the city’s most stressed-out lawyer to deliver the final punch, metaphorically, of course.

Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man" kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a multimedia superhero property that would remain dominant in the pop consciousness for over a decade. Initially, "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's own 2008 MCU movie "The Incredible Hulk" (which finally got a sequel of sorts in 2025) were meant to be mere stand-alone superhero sories, only including references to the Avengers as a cute wink to fans. But when Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009, a grander plan was put in motion, laying out multiple films at once, each one introducing a new character. Eventually, all the superhero characters teamed up in 2012's "The Avengers," which was essentially the cinematic version of a TV season finale. That structure held fast through to "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, the 22nd film in the franchise, and one that featured many, many superheroes.

Netflix continues to score big in the world of action, with the second season of spy adventure The Recruit landing an even more impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes than its predecessor. As of now, The Recruit Season 2 holds an impressive rating of 88% on the review aggregator site, beating Season 1’s score of 68% and successfully building on this tale of a fledgling CIA lawyer who finds himself caught up in all manner of political conspiracies.
Ed Power of The Daily Telegraph awarded The Recruit Season 2 a near-perfect 4/5, and says “Netflix’s enthusiastically silly series is like the anti-Slow Horses.” In a good way, if it’s unclear.
