Netflix has set a November 6, 2025 premiere date for the limited series Death by Lightning, based on the incredible true story of President James Garfield. The four-episode drama, created by Bad Education‘s Mike Makowsky, announced the date and unveiled the first official photos.

The upcoming Netflix limited series “Death by Lightning” has set its premiere date.

The four-episode drama will drop on the streaming service on Nov. 6. As previously announced, the series stars Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Shannon, which will tell the story of U.S. President James Garfield (Shannon) and his assassination by Charles Guiteau (Macfadyen). It is based on the novel “Destiny Of The Republic” by Candice Millard.

Along with Shannon and Macfadyen, the cast includes Nick Offerman as Chester Arthur, Bradley Whitford as James Blaine, Shea Whigham as Roscoe Conkling), and Betty Gilpin as Crete Garfield.

Created, written and executive produced by Mike Makowsky (Bad Education), Death By Lightning is a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield — the man who would come to kill him, per the synopsis.

Garfield was President in 1881 and was assassinated later that year, having previously served nine terms as a Congressman. He was elected as a Senator but declined this when he became President, despite having not sought the office.

He was shot by Guiteau, who felt he had played a major role in Garfield’s election.

One of the (many) shows to suffer the fatal blow of the Netflix cancellation axe could return as a movie. Beginning back in 2022, the action thriller spy series The Recruit was cut down in its prime after the streamer revealed that Season 2, which debuted back in January, would be the show’s last. Now, creator Alexi Hawley has confirmed his hopes for a comeback with a The Recruit movie.

Speaking with Deadline, The Recruit creator, writer, and executive producer Alexi Hawley, who is also behind the police procedural hit series The Rookie with Nathan Fillion, still has hope that the spy thriller series will be given the opportunity to wrap things up with a movie. But it’s too soon to know if it’ll happen for sure.

Even 35 years after its short-lived run on ABC, the late Steven Bochco's and William M. Finkelstein's "Cop Rock" is a tough sell. "Cop Rock" was about a group of Los Angeles police officers who traversed the city investigating crimes, arresting perps, and facing the every drama of living in the City of Angels. The crowded session followed Tuesday night’s Luxembourg premiere of independent movie Poison, directed by Désirée Nosbusch (Bad Banks), in which Roth stars opposite Danish actress Trine Dyrholm as a couple that meets again years after tragedy drove them apart. Netflix has sadly canceled Noah Centineo‘s underrated spy action comedy-drama series The Recruit after Season 2. Created by Alexi Hawley, the Netflix original series was canceled nearly six weeks after the premiere of The Recruit Season 2 at the end of January.

The news of the cancelation was first revealed by Centineo’s co-star Colton Dunn on social media, after which Netflix confirmed the cancelation.

The Recruit follows Owen Hendricks (Centineo), a CIA lawyer who gets embroiled in an international espionage situation after a dangerous and seductive woman blackmails the agency to get her out of jail, or she will reveal the CIA’s dirty secrets.

The Netflix series also stars Laura Haddock, Aarti Mann, Fivel Stewart, Daniel Quincy Annoh, Kristian Bruun, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Kaylah Zander, Maddie Hasson, Angel Parker, Teo Yoo, and Nathan Fillion.

Netflix’s The Recruit was the perfect mix of action, humor, and chaos, led by Noah Centineo as the unlucky but resourceful CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks. Across two seasons, the show delivered high-stakes missions, unexpected twists, and plenty of moments where Owen found himself in way over his head.

Season 2 took things to the next level, moving the action to South Korea and introducing new characters like Teo Yoo’s dangerous and mysterious operative. It was the kind of spy dramedy that kept you on the edge of your seat one minute and laughing the next, exactly what made it so fun to watch.

Netflix's "Daredevil" was great and Charlie Cox's iteration of the character is still the best thing to come out of those shows, but one of its biggest mistakes was killing Ben Urich, legendary ally to the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, played by Vondie Curtis-Hall. Failing to make it to even the end of the first season, the Daily Bulletin reporter was brutally murdered by Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) in one of the villain's most disturbing moments. It was a choice that, while impactful to the story, really felt like offing the very similar Commissioner Gordon from Batman or snuffing out J. Jonah Jameson before he even gets to call Spidey a wall-crawling menace. Thankfully, as revealed in the all-new "Daredevil: Born Again" series, the new show is honoring the legacy of Urich by introducing his niece, Bb, to carry on her uncle's work.

The news was first announced by cast member Colton Dunn, who wrote, “‘The Recruit’ has been cancelled y’all. Such a bummer. I’ll share some pics and fun memories on Ig but just wanted you to hear it from me. Thanks if you watched. I’m Available Now! Hire me for your TV story,” in a post on Threads.

No reason has been given for the show’s cancellation, but Netflix makes those decisions based on multiple factors, including cost relative to audience size. Whether that’s the case or not, the show faced challenges between seasons that may have hurt it.

The Recruit is ending.

Netflix has canceled the Noah Centineo-fronted drama series after two seasons. It comes less than six weeks after its second season premiered at the end of January.

The news was revealed by Colton Dunn, who played Lester Kitchens, a colleague of Centineo’s, on social media. Netflix confirmed the cancelation.

The spy series, which premiered in December 2022, followed Owen Hedricks (Centineo), a CIA lawyer who becomes involved in international conflicts with dangerous parties after an asset tries to expose her relationship to the agency.

It was created by Alexi Hawley and produced by Lionsgate (after its acquisition of eOne) and Hypnotic.

The Recruit was one of many shows that were hampered by the writers strike with a two-year gap between seasons. It’s somewhat of a surprise given that the show made it to No. 2 on Nielsen’s streaming charts and No.

Daredevil Season 3 was an emotional rollercoaster that left fans with jaws dropped, minds blown, and an unhealthy urge to start shadowboxing in their living rooms. Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. With a gap spanning more than two years between its first and second seasons, The Recruitfinally returned to screens with its sophomore season on January 30, 2025. Although the season had been intended to release much earlier, Hollywood's strikes and Netflix's post-production process delayed the release of the season. However, this delay only contributed to steadily building fan anticipation for Season 2. Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man" kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a multimedia superhero property that would remain dominant in the pop consciousness for over a decade. Initially, "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's own 2008 MCU movie "The Incredible Hulk" (which finally got a sequel of sorts in 2025) were meant to be mere stand-alone superhero sories, only including references to the Avengers as a cute wink to fans. But when Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009, a grander plan was put in motion, laying out multiple films at once, each one introducing a new character. Eventually, all the superhero characters teamed up in 2012's "The Avengers," which was essentially the cinematic version of a TV season finale. Netflix continues to score big in the world of action, with the second season of spy adventure The Recruit landing an even more impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes than its predecessor. As of now, The Recruit Season 2 holds an impressive rating of 88% on the review aggregator site, beating Season 1’s score of 68% and successfully building on this tale of a fledgling CIA lawyer who finds himself caught up in all manner of political conspiracies.

Ed Power of The Daily Telegraph awarded The Recruit Season 2 a near-perfect 4/5, and says “Netflix’s enthusiastically silly series is like the anti-Slow Horses.” In a good way, if it’s unclear.

The Recruit season 2 episode 5 sets up the final mission of the season: rescuing Nan Hee (Sanghee Lee) from Vladivostok, Russia, where she’s being held as a hostage of the Yakuza.

The Recruit season 2 episode 6, “I.D.N.W.T.B.D.I.” begins as Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), Owen (Noah Centineo), Lester (Colton Dunn), and Yoo Jin (Do Hyun Shin) are approaching Vladivostok by boat. Nichka (Maddie Hasson) calls Owen as they approach the docks, and she informs him that she’s near the compound. While Lester and Owen hide, Jang Kyun pays off the Russian officers who board the boat as they head to the docks.

Meanwhile, Dawn and her team meet up with Owen and the gang on the boat as they make their move to find Nan Hee and rescue her.

Owen gets stuck on a plane headed for the Middle East at the end of The Recruit season 2 episode 2, and we see the immediate fallout of that occurence in the next episode.

The Recruit season 2 episode 3, “H.H.I.I.T.K.A.L.” begins in Doha, Qatar with Tom Wallace (Felix Solis) and Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) heading to a meeting with the Taliban. They’re trying to bring home four Americans who have been kidnapped and held hostage.

Tom introduces Owen to a British intelligence officer/businessman Oliver Bonner-Jones (James Purefoy) facilitating the exchange. Owen gets a call from Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), but he hangs up before speaking to the British officer. After speaking with this British friend, Owen realizes that something is up with this prisoner negotiations. He sees one of the Taliban’s bodyguards putting in earplugs, and he calls Jang Kyun for some advice.

The Recruit season 2 episode 2, “Y.A.R.A.C.O.T.D.O.P.,” begins shortly after the end of episode 1. Finally, Owen (Noah Centineo) wakes up where he was living when his father was killed after Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), the Graymailer, drugged him after the fight at the nightclub.

Jang Kyun’s wife was kidnapped in Russia

The woman, Nan Hee (Sanghee Lee) who was kidnapped in the season premiere is Jang Kyun’s wife. He explains that his wife works for an organization that repatriates Koreans who are trapped in Russia. He learned from jopok, which means mafia in Korean, that his wife was taken, but he doesn’t know why or by whom. And, he needs the CIA’s help because if he told the Nis she’d been kidnapped, he would be pulled from the field.

Netflix debuted its first look Friday for “Death by Lightning,” a new drama about the true story of the 20th president of the United States, James Garfield, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau — the man who would come to kill him.

The limited series, which is based on the Candice Millard novel “Destiny of the Republic,” will premiere on the streamer later this year and stars Matthew Macfadyen and Michael Shannon.

Other cast members include Betty Gilpin, Nick Offerman, , Laura Marcus, Bradley Whitford, Shea Whigham, Paula Malcomson, Tuppence Middleton, Archie Fisher, Barry Shabaka Henley, Željko Ivanek, Kyle Soller, Ben Miles, Vondie Curtis Hall, Shaun Parkes and Alistair Petrie.
