Adam Pak Video Interview
In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Adam Pak to dive deep into his gripping performance as Wing in the Hong Kong adaptation of Tape. Known for its raw intensity and emotional complexity, the film challenges both its characters and audience with themes of friendship, rivalry, manipulation, and the echoes of the #MeToo movement.

Adam opens up about:

Preparing to embody Wing’s volatile and emotionally erratic nature His first reaction to a script rooted in both a stage play and Richard Linklater’s film Building on-screen chemistry with Kenny Kwan -The challenges of sustaining intensity in a dialogue-driven, confined setting How Selena Lee‘s role as Amy shaped...

Karate Kid: Legends Easter Eggs
Image
The adventures of Daniel Larusso continues after the conclusion of Netflix’s Cobra Kai. The hit show became a treasure trove of easter eggs from the original John G. Avildsen Karate Kid trilogy. Cobra Kai would not only bring back major supporting characters like Chozen Toguchi, Terry Silver and “Karate’s Bad Boy” Mike Barnes, but the writers cut even deeper, with a character like the little Okinawan girl that Daniel saved in the Typhoon in Part II, and more impressively, took a throwaway line from Part III about an off-screen character — Elizabeth Anne Rooney — and actually gave her a scene in an episode. Sony Pictures recently released Karate Kid: Legends,...

The 7 Best New Movies on Hulu Right Now
Image
Whether you’re looking for a teen comedy, action epic or bloody horror fest, Hulu has something for everyone in August. The streaming service added a number of hit movies and series to its library this month, including an all-time classic rom com and one of 2025’s best horror movies.

Here are the seven best new movies on Hulu in August.

Disney “10 Things I Hate About You”

only Adapting William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” in a 1990s schoolyard setting, the Julia Stiles/Heath Ledger-starring “10 Things I Hate About You” is a gold standard for teenage rom coms. Only four years in the wake of “Clueless” — a megahit modern-day update of Jane Austen’s “Emma” — it would be easy for a movie like this to feel like derivative old news.

Yet the film carries an infectious energy from moment one, mixing bursts of Shakespeare-like language with more modern parlance.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023): Movie Ending, Explained – How does John Wick win his freedom from The Table?
Image
Action films, like horror movies, run the risk of becoming weary, predictable, and hollow. Both genres are popular among mainstream audiences, leading to saturated markets and orders to follow strict formulas that executives know will guarantee ticket sales. Instead of the jump-scares, teen protagonists, and haunted houses, we find in horror, action flicks are required to feature fight sequences, weapons, and quick-cut editing that speeds the pace along.

On surface level, the John Wick franchise looks like another run-of-the-mill action series that blends into the background: fights, guns, explosions, and arrogant baddies reeling off long speeches before defeat. A retired hit-man returns to take revenge? It’s not a new plot-line, but director Chad Stahelski makes it feel like it with his singular revitalization of the worn-out genre.

John Wick chiefly stands out because of its tone. By infusing elements of neo-noir, John Wick is given the depth and dimension most action franchises lack.

The Action Scene | Choreographing the Real: A Conversation with Kenji Tanigaki
Image
The Action Scene explores the form, history, and visceral power of action cinema through its set piecesThis column was occasioned by Issue 7 of Notebook magazine as part of a broader exploration of the unfilmable. The magazine is available via direct subscription or in select stores around the world.Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends.Unlike the wuxia warrior who soars to rafters and treetops, the fighters in the Rurouni Kenshin films (2012–21) move low and fast. Rather than immaculate choreography immaculately framed—the meat and potatoes of golden-age Hong Kong martial arts cinema—their swordplay is less studied, a quicksilver flow of action and reactions. And unlike the conventional samurai standoff, in which opponents take their time sizing each other up from a distance, the action is pure, intimate bedlam. Blades clash everywhere, from tip to hilt, bringing combatants up close; when an attack is dodged, it misses by mere inches. Some...

Hulu Lands Major Action Film Series Days After Disney Merger Announcement
Image
It appears Hulu is ready to go out with a bang, days after a Disney merger announcement confirmed the streaming service will soon be no more. The platform shoots for increased viewership thanks to the beloved action franchise, John Wick, which is set for an imminent debut.

According toScreen Rant, Hulu will house all four John Wick films on its platform, with the movies becoming available to stream via the Disney-owned service on Aug. 15. Hulu is the latest platform to have the entire John Wick movie series under one roof, as Peacock did the same thing this past May.

Housing the Keanu Reeves-led John Wick movies is a much-needed boost for Hulu and its subscribers following the recent news that Disney will shutter the platform after over two decades. Disney plans to integrate Hulu's content into its platform over the next year. However, Hulu won't completely disappear with the...

'John Wick' Franchise Might Be in Trouble After 'Ballerina's $94 Million Loss
Image
The box office underperformance of Ballerina might spell doom for the John Wick franchise. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina opened in theaters on June 6, 2025, and earned positive reviews from critics, including a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore. Opening to $24.5 million in its first weekend, the hope was that word of mouth would pick up and carry Ballerina. Sadly, that didn't happen, as the film dropped 62% in its second weekend and, after a month, it was out of the domestic top 10.

IGNis reporting that Ballerina led to Lionsgate facing a $94 million quarterly net loss. This isn't to say Ballerina itself lost $94 million, though with a $90 million budget and a worldwide total of $131 million, it certainly failed to turn a profit, considering marketing costs likely doubled that production number. Revenue for the overall company of Lionsgate topped out at $555.9 million after Ballerina's disappointing run. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer...

'The Furious' Hailed as an "Action Extravaganza" Ahead of TIFF Debut
Image
This upcoming action thriller sounds like everything that fans of the genre have been waiting their whole lives for. Smashing together action classics like Takenand The Raid into a perfectly delivered series of punches, the action outing has now been given the most explosive hype ahead of its debut.

Titled The Furious, which should already tell you everything you need to know about this particular action flick, the movie boasts an incredible cast of martial arts actors, a filmmaker with an unmatched talent for stunts, and a deliciously no-nonsense plot that should allow for all manner of brutal visual poetry as fists, feet, and various other limbs are turned into weapons.

The Furious is all set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness, and Segment Programmer, Peter Kuplowsky, has now called the action outing an “extravaganza” while hyping up (via X) the finale as “one of the...

Young Action Stars: Hollywood needs to develop young talent to take up the mantle
Image
Who would you say are the best current action stars? Tom Cruise? Jason Statham? Keanu Reeves? Donnie Yen? Dwayne Johnson? Well, guess what—all of those actors are over fifty. In fact, Cruise, Reeves, and Yen are all over sixty. A few of the most legendary action stars, all of whom are still cranking out movies—like Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Liam Neeson—are well over seventy. And Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones himself, is in his eighties.

So what, you might say—people get old. Deal with it. And that’s absolutely true. But there’s a huge vacuum in Hollywood that no one really addresses: where are the younger action heroes? Who is going to pick up the mantle once the legends are gone?

Of the names listed above, I’d expect Statham, Reeves, and Cruise to keep making action movies well into their seventies and beyond.

Someone Stole John Wick's Watches - They're Lucky He Didn't Find Them First
Image
Anyone who's watched the John Wick franchise over the last 11 years knows that Keanu Reeves' titular assassin isn't the man to mess with, no matter how much people try. One young man dared to take on Baby Yaga, and is lucky he didn't face his wrath first-hand as police recover important valuables tied to the most recent John Wick sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4.

According to Deadline, several watches belonging to Reeves were recovered by Chilean law enforcement and turned over to the FBI after burglars initially stole them from Reeves' Hollywood Hills home in late 2023. The FBI is arranging to have the watches returned to Reeves after he clarified that they were his.

The watches aren't just financially valuable, costing a reported $125,000, but they also carry weight emotionally as they were watches commemorating Reeves and his crew for the work they did on 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4. One of the watches,...

August Is About To Be an Explosive Month for Fans of One of the Greatest Action Franchises of All Time
Image
Considered one of the greatest action film series of all time, Derek Kolstad’s prominent John Wick franchise has come a long way from the first movie, released in 2014. The installment has since spawned three sequels and multiple spin-offs, as well as several more projects in development, including a fifth chapter. Keanu Reeves headlines the films in the titular role as a legendary hitman unwillingly drawn back into the criminal underworld after retiring to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife.

Despite the franchise’s popularity, there aren't many streamers that provide all four chapters, and as of June 2025, the films were available to stream on only Peacock, Fubo TV, USA Network’s streaming app, and NBC.com. That’s about to change as Hulu has plans for this summer. As announced by the streamer, the four original John Wick films...

‘SideKicks’ Animated Series in the Works from Sentry Creator Paul Jenkins (Exclusive)
Image
Earlier this summer, Paul Jenkins saw one of his biggest creations, The Sentry, break out in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*. Now he is hoping to parlay that momentum into bringing another of his creations to the screen.

Jenkins is developing an adult animated comedy based on his superhero satire comic SideKicks.

SideKicks ran for five issues from 2006-07, and took place in Metroville, a city in which superheroes are common, as are their underpaid and underappreciated sidekicks. It featured art from Chris Moreno.

The story centers on Eddie Edison, a pizza delivery boy by day, sidekick by night. “Tired of living paycheck to paycheck while shouldering the burden of saving lives, Eddie takes on a series of sidekick gigs for different heroes across the city’s increasingly absurd roster of vigilantes,” reads the logline. “But when a new threat emerges in the form of the maniacal Doctor Scurrilous, Eddie must juggle multiple alter-egos,...

August Will Be a Great Month For John Wick Fans
Image
Although John Wick fans may have a bit of time to wait until the fifth installment of the gun-fu movie makes its way to the big screen, there is hope on the horizon. As fans of the franchise, we know how difficult it can be to have your very own binge-a-thon at home from one streamer alone, as — typically speaking — the four installments are usually spread out over a variety of platforms. However, that won’t be the case come August when all four chapters of the Keanu Reeves-led films punch and kick their way onto Hulu. Beginning on August 15, first-timers and rewatchers alike can lock themselves in a room and watch the movies from top to bottom when they land on the streamer.

The best part about the John Wick franchise isn’t the millions of dollars it's made or even its insanely well-choreographed fight scenes — although those are certainly very important.

Ballerina Box Office Report: Ana de Armas’ John Wick Spin-Off Falls Short of Expectations (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Ballerina, the John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas, has wrapped up its theatrical run with numbers that leave little to celebrate. After a release on PVOD platforms and a slow climb past 100 days in theaters, the film has barely managed to bring in double its estimated production budget.

Ana de Armas' Action Thriller Ends Theatrical Run With Less Than 'John Wick: Chapter 4's Opening Weekend
Image
Having debuted on PVOD platforms and with its domestic theater-count down to a little over 100, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is officially an underperformer. Starring Ana de Armas, the movie has pretty much concluded its theatrical run with under twice its reported budget, which means that it hasn't broken even. Movies like Ballerina tend to have a long tail, and will continue making money for years through ancillary avenues. But the film's performance at the box office only serves as a reminder of how integral Keanu Reeves is to the John Wick franchise.

With less than $60 million domestically and only around $130 million at the worldwide box office, Ballerina has grossed less than John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, and John Wick: Chapter 4. Each movie in the main franchise grossed more globally than its immediate predecessor, with John Wick 4 having made nearly $450 million. In fact, it...

Before Ballerina, The John Wick Universe Expanded With This TV Show Fans Wish To Forget
Image
It's a dangerous game to try and mix things up with a franchise, even more so when you dare to spin-off a big screen universe into a television show. That's the issue the "John Wick" property ran into when someone got the bright idea to give us "The Continental," a prequel series that explored how Winston (who's played by Ian McShane as an older man in the "John Wick" movies) came into ownership of the titular hotel -- a place where assassins can kick off their shoes and spend a few nights knowing their fellow hit-people are forbidden from killing anyone on the consecrated ground. But while "The Continental" was based on an interesting idea, its execution was anything but successful, with the show earning a pretty harsh response from critics.

/FIlm's own Jeremy Mathai called "The Continental" a "lifeless, joyless, and ultimately pointless return to the Wick-verse" in his review,...

Ballerina's Global Box Office Hits Huge Milestone In Light Of VOD Release
Image
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina passes one of its final box office milestones as the spinoff becomes available on VOD. The latest John Wick spinoff follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), who seeks revenge against an assassin cult responsible for her father's death. Despite high anticipation, Ballerina debuted with just $24 million during its opening weekend, but it steadily passed a few box office milestones.

Now, according to The Numbers, Ballerina has just crossed $130 million at the global box office. The box office total consists of $57 million domestically and $73 million internationally. However, it won't be enough to make any charting impact, as Ballerina remains the second-lowest-grossing movie in the John Wick franchise, just ahead of the original 2014 installment.

Why Ballerina Is Not Exactly A Disappointment Despite Underwhelming Box Office The John Wick Spinoff Is Doing Well On VOD

Movie Based on Action-Comedy Comic ‘Top Secret Service’ in the Works (Exclusive)
Image
In a preemptive deal, Solipsist Films has taken the film rights to Top Secret Service, an upcoming action-comedy comic book from writer Zack Keller and illustrator Giovanna La Pietra.

The high-concept comic is described as in the spirit of Midnight Run and 48 Hrs., with adding in the political suspense of Air Force One. The goal for the movie is to pair two young actors with an older actor as the President of the United States.

Per the logline, “When an elite kill team assaults a remote Montana ranch, two young Secret Service agents must protect the retired president they were assigned — only to discover he’s the last living link to a decades-old alien contact cover-up and the key to unlocking dangerous extraterrestrial tech the world was never meant to find.”

Keanu Reeves’ Misfire That Lost the Studio $100 Million Is Still a Global Streaming Hit 4 Years Later
Image
Keanu Reeves was recently seen reprising his role as John Wick in Ballerina, but a few years ago, he returned to another one of his iconic roles for a controversial film climbing streaming charts. Reeves stars alongside Carrie-Anne Moss in The Matrix Resurrections, the legacy sequel in which he reprised his role as Neo/Thomas Anderson for the first time since The Matrix Revolutions in 2009. The Matrix Resurrections is currently streaming on HBO Max, and the film is one of the most popular movies in the world for the streamer, charting in countries such as Armenia, Poland, and even Chile. The film received mild scores of 63% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed only $157 million at the box office against a reported budget of around $190 million.

It’s estimated that The Matrix Resurrections lost Warner Bros. well over $100 million, but the film was released during a...

Keanu Reeves’ $447M Action Blockbuster Is Climbing the US Streaming Charts Years After Release
Image
The John Wick franchise experienced a bit of a setback recently, with its first theatrical spin-off underperforming at the box office. Directed by Len Wiseman, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina barely scraped past the $100 million mark at the global box office and has already been given an early release on PVOD. It’s now available to watch at home, where it’s been dominating the charts. But no amount of home video success can hide the fact that it wasn’t the hit that Lionsgate so desperately needed it to be. However, interest in the franchise remains as strong as ever, with John Wick: Chapter 4also creeping into the Netflix viewership charts.

According to FlixPatrol, the film claimed the ninth spot on July 4, earning over 100 points. In total, this month, the movie has accumulated 383 points. The movie beat out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on Netflix's ranking list,...

New Ballerina Deleted Scene Sees John Wick Called Over a Favor
Image
The Baba Yaga makes a brief detour from his story in an unreleased From the World of John Wick: Ballerina clip.

The deleted scene, released by IGN, offers a more concrete explanation of how John Wick (Keanu Reeves) got involved in Eve Macarro's (Ana de Armas) journey during the spinoff's final act, leading to their much-hyped confrontation. Set aboard a train, it sees Wick awakened by an employee who reveals that the initial travel schedule has been changed, leading to him taking a call from Anjelica Huston's Director. Having lent him transport in John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in exchange for a favor, the Director reveals she's cashing in that favor earlier than expected due to Eve's vendetta stirring up tension for the Ruska Roma. The Director also subtly threatens to revoke Wick's own protection if he doesn't comply, forcing him to go along with this request.

$105M John Wick Spinoff Movie Is Now Available For Digital Release After One Month In Theaters
Image

Other than the mainline movies, there have also been various spin-offs that have expanded the franchise. John Wick's Church Shootout Scene Made No Sense Because Of One Obvious Mistake
Image
The "John Wick" movies are a great deal of fun, pitting super-assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) against a whole world of professional killers. Drawn back into the world of contract killing after his retirement when someone kills his puppy, John Wick is almost a superhero in his abilities to absolutely decimate the competition. He's the ultimate badass in a world full of badasses, and while the universe he exists in feels somewhat fantastical, it's at the very least rooted in our reality. Even if Mr. Wick is sometimes called "Baba Yaga" in reference to the powerful witch from Slavic folklore, there's no magic to be found, and he could ostensibly live in our world, but there's just one little problem (and it's not the imaginary but super cool Continental hotels).

In the very first "John Wick" film, there's a pretty climactic shootout in an old church in New York City,...

Gareth Edwards: I'm very happy to move on from Star Wars
Gareth Edwards was "very happy to move on" from the Star Wars franchise. The 50-year-old filmmaker helmed 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Gareth doesn't have any intention of returning to the sci-fi franchise.Asked if he'd ever make another Star Wars movie, Gareth told Business Insider: "I'm very happy to move on and do my thing."Despite this, Gareth remains a huge fan of the Star Wars movies. He said: "It's the thing that was in my life before I knew what a film was."It's like your mom; it's like something that's a part of you. I'm always fascinated by what they're doing. I never stop loving that trilogy."Fan sentiment towards Rogue One has become kinder in recent years. But Gareth has downplayed the suggestion that his movie - which starred the likes of Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen,...

‘Rogue One’ Director Says ‘I’m Happy to Move on’ From ‘Star Wars’ and ‘I Don’t Agree’ It’s the Best Movie of Disney’s Lucasfilm Era
Image
“Rogue One” director Gareth Edwards recently told Business Insider that he would never make another “Star Wars” movie again, adding: “I’m very happy to move on and do my thing.”

Starring Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, “Rogue One” was the first “Star Wars” spinoff movie, and was centered on a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. The ensemble cast included Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Forest Whitaker. While “Rogue One” was acclaimed by critics and fans upon its release in 2016 (it grossed more than $1 billion worldwide), its reputation has only gone up amid the adoration for its Disney+ prequel series “Andor.”

“I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it,” Edwards said when “Rogue One” was cited as the best “Star Wars” movie of the Disney era. “I’m very grateful that people say nice things.

Ballerina's Global Box Office Milestone Pushes John Wick Movie Into Studio's Highest-Grossing Charts
Image
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hits a major box office milestone, enough to land on the studio's highest-grossing charts. The new spinoff centers on Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), who seeks revenge against a group that killed her father. Despite its anticipation, the John Wick movie debuted with just $24 million during its opening weekend.

According to The Numbers,Ballerina has just crossed $105 million at the global box office after being in theaters for roughly three weeks. The latest milestone consists of $52.3 million domestically and $53 million internationally.

This is enough for the spinoff to land in Lionsgate's top 50 highest-grossing charts, ranking at no. 48. It was able to surpass movies like My Bloody Valentine, Escape Plan, and two Saw installments.

Why Is Ballerina Not A Box Office Success Despite The Global Milestone? Ballerina Just Recently Surpassed Its Budget Amount

While Ballerina was able to climb Lionsgate's highest-grossing charts, that...

Ballerina 2: Should Keanu Reeves’ John Wick Return For Ana De Armas-Led Sequel? Here’s What We Think
Image
Here’s Our Take On Whether Keanu Reeves’ John Wick Should Appear In Ana De Armas’ Ballerina 2!(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses major cameo appearances from Ana de Armas’ Ballerina movie.

John Wick: Chapter 4 gave the Baba Yaga a near-perfect send-off. He died on his own terms, at peace, with the kind of closure most action franchises don’t dare to write. Yet two years later, Keanu Reeves is still showing up. Ballerina used a timeline loophole to sneak him back in, setting the story between Chapters 3 and 4. It worked once. But going forward, it doesn’t need to happen again, especially not in Ballerina 2.

The demand is there, sure. Keanu is irreplaceable in the role. But sometimes, letting a character rest is the braver call. Reeves himself says that Wick is “dead” and laughs off the idea of a real comeback. Director Chad Stahelski doubled down too,...

John Wick 4's Original Title Almost Spoiled The Entire Movie
Image
This article contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

John Wick didn't become this generation's pre-eminent action hero by dying, but it sure didn't hurt. Back in 2014, the character debuted in his first movie, which introduced Keanu Reeves as an aggrieved former hitman who sets out on a blood-drenched quest for revenge after the son of a crime boss breaks into his home and kills John's new puppy. That's enough to send anyone into a blind rage, but Reeves' character took his time, unearthing his weapons from beneath concrete in a sledgehammer scene that saw the actor take a surprisingly method approach, before tracking down everyone responsible for the poor pup's death. Only after this did he let his aggression out, laying waste to 77 people across the film's runtime, before finally offing Michael Nyqvist's Russian crime lord Viggo Tarasov in a satisfying conclusion that underlined the myth of John Wick in the public consciousness.

Kyle Loftus Elevated To President Of Independent Artist Group
Image
Kyle Loftus has been named President of Independent Artist Group, the agency announced on Wednesday.

Loftus is a homegrown success story who started at the agency 16 years ago as an intern, in its previous incarnation as APA, quickly moving up the ranks. He’s the rare agent to reach such heights in his 30s, at a time when achieving upward mobility in the ten-percenter business is fairly tricky. In addition to his new title, he will join the Iag Board of Directors.

In a statement on the appointment, Iag CEO Jim Osborne, a longtime mentor and partner of Loftus, said, “Kyle has been instrumental in building an architecture at Iag that allows us to seamlessly integrate innovative opportunities for our clients across all divisions. ‘Ballerina’ Shoots Past Jason Statham’s Forgotten 42% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller at Global Box Office
Image
After a tremendously difficult production that reportedly saw a significant chunk of it being retooled, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina debuted theatrically last week, only to go from the frying pan into the fire. The movie opened in the wake of two major releases, Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake and Paramount's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, which certainly took the wind out of its sails. Ballerina underperformed in its first weekend of release, both domestically and worldwide. However, the action movie has already outperformed several comparable titles, such as three major Jason Statham films — Crank, The Transporter, and Expend4bles. More recently, the movie surpassed the lifetime global box office haul of Statham's largely forgotten 2013 release, Homefront.

Directed by Gary Fleder, the movie also featured James Franco, Winona Ryder, and Kate Bosworth. Homefront ended its run with $51 million at the worldwide box office, and earned a so-so 42% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Ballerina's Box Office Opening Might Be A Death Sentence For The John Wick Universe
Image
The summer movie season of 2025 has been fruitful thus far, with movies like "Final Destination Bloodlines," "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning," and "Lilo & Stitch" bringing out patrons en masse to multiplexes all around the world. Unfortunately for Lionsgate, that party didn't continue as "Ballerina," aka "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina," opened far below expectations -- so much so that the studio might now have to reckon with the idea that its planned John Wick Cinematic Universe may not be as viable as it had hoped.

Director Len Wiseman's "Ballerina" opened to $24.5 million domestically this past weekend, coming in at number two behind "Lilo & Stitch" ($32.3 million), which is in its third weekend of release. Overseas, the "John Wick" spin-off earned $26 million, giving it a global start just north of $50 million. Against a $90 million budget and as part of a $1 billion franchise, that's not what Lionsgate was hoping for,...

With ‘Ballerina’ Falling Short at the Box Office, ‘John Wick’ May Finally Be Getting Stretched Too Thin
Image
One unique quality of the “John Wick” franchise — and one Lionsgate has been happy to tout — is that each entry in the series has been bigger than the last. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of “Wick.”

But for the franchise’s first (big screen) spinoff, one that’s introducing a new character and turns Keanu Reeves’ iconic Wick into a supporting character, it would not have been fair to expect “Ballerina” to continue that growth streak. Still, the Ana de Armas-led action film underperformed even with lower expectations. Opening to an estimated $25 million domestic, it’s lower than all but the original “Wick” movie from 2014, which opened to $14.4 million before becoming a sleeper hit.

Tracking suggested “Ballerina” could surpass $35 million domestic and take down “Lilo & Stitch” from the #1 spot. With $32.5 million, the Disney live-action remake will stay on top for a third week. And even Lionsgate...

Ballerina Director Addresses Chances Of A Sequel For The John Wick Spinoff
Image
The following contains spoilers for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina.

After dancing its way into the hearts of critics and audiences, Ballerinamay not be done making moves in the world of John Wick. Following the ambiguous ending of the acclaimed spinoff, director Len Wiseman hints at more to come from Ana de Armas' titular character.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wiseman addressed the ending of Ballerina, where Eve Macarro (de Armas), faces a new mission after succeeding in her fight to avenge her father's murder. After receiving intel from The Continental's head honcho, Winston Scott (Ian McShane), and being warned by Keanu Reeves' Wick about potential consequences, Eve takes down the man responsible for her father's death, the Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), with Wick's help and saves a little girl named Ella (Ava Joyce McCarthy), reuniting him with her father Daniel (Norman Reedus).

However, Eve later finds out that a...

Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Chad Stahelski blows up John Wick spin-off The Continental: ‘They thought they had the magic sauce’
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Just because a movie or show is spun off from a hit doesn’t mean it will stand on its own. This is the case with pretty much everything that is linked to John Wick. We saw it over the weekend with Ballerina – which seriously underperformed at the box office – and we saw it with TV series The Continental. And while John Wick franchise head Chad Stahelski still has faith in Ballerina as a producer, he continues to look down upon The Continental.

Chad Stahelski recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an extensive interview in which he discussed not only the John Wick movies but the multiple spin-offs that have been out and are in the works. One of the key takeaways that that he says those who actually worked on The Continental just assumed that because it was a John Wick spin-off that it would be a hit.

John Wick: How a movie that almost went direct-to-dvd became iconic
Image
One really has to hand it to Keanu Reeves. The guy has a knack for starring in zeitgeist-defining action films, with him leading Point Break, Speed and The Matrix. Yet, perhaps his most iconic character, John Wick, is the most unlikely success story of them all. It was seen as an upstart indie flick which came close to going direct-to-video, only for it to become one of the most successful action franchises of all time, and a property that’s unlikely to die anytime soon, even if its own hero’s survival is kind of up in the air right now post John Wick 4. With Keanu Reeves reprising the role in Ballerina, now’s a good time to look back at how this little action franchise that could came to be.

Flashback to the fall of 2014. Keanu Reeves, while already a legend, was struggling to reinvent himself as a now middle-aged star.

Donnie Yen
The Prosecutor review – Donnie Yen leads mashup of legal drama and action flick
Donnie Yen
Suited and booted, Yen turns to role as public prosector cum ass-kicking vigilante as a late-stage career recalibration

Developed by China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate and directed by butt-kicking luminary Donnie Yen, The Prosecutor is a bizarre mashup of courtroom procedural and action flick; it is just as keen on lionising due process and the “shining light” of Chinese justice as it is on reducing civic infrastructure to smithereens in several standout bouts. But Yen, who looks undeniably good in a suit, is more convincing on his habitual fisticuff grounds than the jurisprudential ones.

Yen plays Fok, a one-time hotshot cop who – leaving the force after some over-zealous policing – decides to man the “final gate” of justice and become a public prosecutor. Like a low-carb Perry Mason with years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu behind him, trouble keeps knocking on his door. Suspecting that a young drug smuggler (Mason Yung) whose...

Ballerina Director Reveals Alternate Ending Idea With Scrapped Character
Image
This story contains Spoilers for Ballerina.

Ballerina director Len Wiseman shared one of his original ideas for the John Wick spinoff’s ending sequences, which would have introduced another character. The filmmaker is no stranger to the action genre, after previously directing two Underworld movies, 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard, and 2012’s Total Recall.

During a recent interview with EW, Wiseman opened up about his alternate ending idea, which involves Eve’s supposedly dead mother. This scrapped ending’s surprising twist will not only reveal that Eve’s mother was alive all along, but it would have also shown Eve’s mother as the one who ordered the hit on her.

"At one point I had [in the script] that she meets her mother, and we never got there,” he said. “We were maybe going to shoot the scene, but that's always something that we hear, her mother's dead, but in this world,...

Lionsgate Touts Ballerina's Box Office Success After John Wick Spinoff's Debut
Image
Lionsgate is touting the box office success of its new John Wick spin-off film, Ballerina. The film debuted in theaters on June 6 and has been well-received by critics and audiences.

In a press release from Lionsgate, the distributor bragged about Ballerina's impressive opening performance while sharing how much the film brought in during its first weekend. The John Wick spinoff film took in an estimated $25 million domestically this weekend while playing at 3,409 locations. Internationally, Ballerina opened in 82 countries and earned an estimated $26 million, bringing the film's global start to $51 million. It was #1 in numerous key territories, including the United Kingdom, Mexico and China.

"This is a solid start for a new character not introduced in any of the previous John Wick films," the press release reads. It also notes how the film is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has an equally impressive 94% audience score -- a franchise high...

Weekend Box Office: Ballerina is no threat to Lilo & Stitch
Image
While many (including us) went into this first weekend of June thinking that the John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, had a good shot at topping the weekend box office, it was not to be. In a huge upset for Lionsgate, whose entire summer slate rested on the shoulders of this big-budget flick, the Ana de Armas-led action movie had a modest, perhaps even disastrous, $25 million opening. While many will cite its $90 million budget and say it has a good chance of breaking even overseas, the company gave this a summer-movie build-up, and likely were hoping for an opening in the high-30s. As it is, it only opened with a fraction of what the most recent John Wick movies have opened at, proving that perhaps the audience fervour for a Wick-universe led film without Keanu Reeves as the star isn’t what they thought it might be. Indeed, one wonders...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Beats ‘Ballerina’ at Box Office as ‘John Wick’ Spinoff Debuts to $25 Million
Image
“Ballerina” couldn’t twirl its way to the top of box office charts. The “John Wick” spinoff, starring Ana de Armas as a dancer-turned-assassin, launched slightly behind expectations with $25 million from 3,409 North American theaters.

The R-rated film opened in second place behind Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” which claimed the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive weekend with $32.5 million from 4,185 venues. The live-action reboot has generated $335.8 million domestically and $772 million globally and should soon become the year’s first billion-dollar release.

“Ballerina” earned a lackluster $26 million from 82 countries at the international box office for a global start of $51 million. Heading into the weekend, Lionsgate projected a domestic debut of $30 million for “Ballerina.” But even that would have been middling since the film cost $90 million to produce. Lionsgate typically covers two-thirds of its production budgets with international sales, which helps offset underperforming theatrical titles. However, the studio hopes that “Ballerina” will...

'Ballerina' Director Breaks Down The Consequences of Movie's Ending
Image
This article contains spoilers for Ballerina.

Ballerina is the first spinoff movie that takes place in the world of the John Wick films, but it definitely won't be the last. Aside from the other spinoff film that's currently in development starring Donnie Yen's John Wick: Chapter 4 character Caine (which the action star is also directing), it seems that Ana de Armas' Eve Macarro has a violent future ahead of her in a possible sequel. Len Wiseman, the director of Ballerina, took the time to talk about how the ending of the film would shape any future stories revolving around the character, as well as the fallout of her actions.

The ending of Ballerina sees Eve finally take her vengeance on the Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), the leader of an unnamed cult that killed her father when she was a young girl, as shown in the beginning of the film.

John Wick 5: Does Ballerina Set Up The Upcoming Sequel?
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Ballerina" and the John Wick franchise.

The head hotshot of "Ballerina," Eve (Ana de Armas), might be able to stand her ground against a cult and its leader (Gabriel Byrne), but it's clear after her tense altercation with a man sent to kill her that she can't get the best of John Wick (Keanu Reeves). At least, not at this point, anyway. As revealed in Len Wiseman's spin-off shoot-'em-up set in the world of the "John Wick" franchise, the story of "Ballerina" takes place between the third and fourth films, long before the showdown the end of "John Wick: Chapter 4." That's a long time for Eve to go it alone and become more of a killer than she already is, perhaps just in time for when the Baba Yaga comes back from the dead for a fifth film.

Confirmed at Cinema Con this year,...
