With the writers and actors strike looming above the film industry like a dark cloud, now more than ever may be an appropriate time to reflect on the last ten years and re-examine how streaming services have affected cinema as a whole. A lot has changed since Netflix and Amazon first began releasing originally produced content. The years following have resulted in monumental shifts and industry-wide transformations, for better or for worse.
When Netflix introduced its streaming service in the late 2000s, it was initially anticipated to be a quick fad or whimsical trend. Netflix quickly became a stronghold in the industry and threatened the profitability of traditional ancillary markets like physical sales, VOD, and video rental. By 2013, Netflix had gone from an online DVD rental service to a fully functioning production company with their award-winning hit House of Cards.

The renewed thirst for Shadow and Bone's Ben Barnes has steadily been building since it was first announced in 2019 he would join the Netflix adaptation as General Kirigan. On a personal note, my love for the 39-year-old actor began after seeing him in 2007's Stardust and was firmly cemented with his role as the titular Prince Caspian in 2008's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Since then, he's been both villains and heroes with roles like Logan Delos on Westworld, Billy Russo on The Punisher, Dorian Grey in Dorian Grey, Tom Ward in Seventh Son, and Samuel Adams on Sons of Liberty. Thanks to Shadow and Bone, which premieres on Netflix on April 23, he's back in the fantasy element so many of us first fell in love with him in.
It's hard not to be drawn in by Ben as not only is he gorgeous, he sings and absolutely adores his fans.

Rose Riley (L) and Emma Harvie in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’
Rose Riley is getting ready to have her first crack at Hollywood amid the most successful year of her career since graduating from Waapa in 2013.
This week the actor is heading to the Us for the first time for meetings with producers, casting directors and other players set up by her Us agent, Authentic Talent & Literary Management’s Jessica Morgulis.
Rose met Morgulis when the agent visited Sydney, arranged by her Oz rep United Management, before she started work in Stateless, the six-part ABC drama about four strangers in an immigration detention centre in the Australian desert, co-created by Cate Blanchett, Tony Ayres and Elise McCredie.
“I will always be very passionate about Australian stories and Australian cinema, TV and theatre but working overseas would be a total dream; ideally I will find a balance,” she tells If.

Sam Cotton in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’
When Sam Cotton landed the title role in the ABC/RevLover Films’ dramedy Diary of an Uber Driver, he approached the job with some trepidation.
It was his first lead after playing Bruce, the nemesis of Luke McGregor’s Daniel in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and son-in-law Wayne in Sbs’s The Family Law.
He plays Uber driver Ben, whose life had always been in cruise control until his newish girlfriend Beck (Zahra Newman) gets pregnant in the six-parter scripted by Tom Ward, based on Ben Phillips’ blog.
He got the gig after doing a self-tape when he lived in Brisbane (he is now based in Sydney), followed by a call back in Sydney a few weeks later.

Much like the mysterious characters’ laborious attempts to create living beings from dead flesh, “The Frankenstein Chronicles” had a long journey to American audiences. Acquired by A&E in 2015 to bolster its fledgling scripted originals programming, the Sean Bean-starring period drama never made it to the Arts & Entertainment network. Despite success with “Bates Motel,” the cable network couldn’t break through the peak TV pack with anything other than reality television (long live “Storage Wars”), so it scrapped the written word and moved on from such “Chronicles.”
But “Frankenstein” refused to die. The first season was met with strong reviews in the United Kingdom, airing on ITV’s Encore station, and was renewed for a second six-episode run. That much content cannot be ignored in today’s buyer’s market, especially with Bean’s internationally known mug leading both seasons. In swooped the streaming giant, and another Netflix “original” was born.

The Frankenstein Chronicles feat. Sean Bean sets up some juicy complications in this week's murky William Blake-themed episode...
London, 1827 – Day
Officer John Marlott and his boss Sir Robert Peel are standing by the capital’s latest crime scene: another mutilated and stitched body has washed up on the bank of the Thames.
Sir Robert Peel
I don’t want any mistakes on this case, Marlott. I’m gonna be watching you so close you’ll think we’ve been stitched together.
Peel stalks away, leaving Marlott gazing into the grey city gloom.
John Marlott
Okay, Sir Robert…
Marlott turns and puts on an era-appropriate hat.
John Marlott

Frankenstein’s monster has never been quick on his feet, so, fittingly missing Halloween by a week, The Frankenstein Chronicles slowly shuffles its way onto ITV Encore. With parts harvested from history, fiction, and film, this Frankie follows in the footsteps of Sky’s Penny Dreadful and ITV’s recent Jekyll And Hyde – so far, so 'TV Execs are still mid-ransack over at the Waterstones’* Gothic fiction aisles' – but what has this show got in abundance that those others were lacking?

Who doesn't adore Julianne Moore?
Especially in Still Alice, the film for which bookmakers are betting she'll take home the Best Actress Oscar, Moore's portrayal of a linguistics professor battling early onset Alzheimer's is letter perfect. Myself having a sibling now encased in a memory care facility in Florida after being ravaged by the same affliction, every step of Alice's deterioration is recognizable: the random loss of memories, the awareness she's losing her identity, the outbursts of anger, the inability to control bodily functions, and the short-lived moments when the person you have always loved reemerges out of a fog of despair.
Sadly, Moore's performance and that of her peers in Seventh Son capture a forgetfulness, too, although not one symptomatic of an infirmity, but one characteristic of creative bankruptcy. By the time this adaptation of Joseph Delaney's bestselling young-adult classic, The Spook's Apprentice, ends and you've emptied your bladder in your mall's stall,...

The all-star casting of BBC One's "Death Comes to Pemberley" mini-series continues. Jenna-Louise Coleman, best known to American audiences as Clara, the Doctor's most recent companion on "Doctor Who."
According to Deadline, Coleman will play the part of Lydia Wickham, the youngest sister of "Pride and Prejudice" heroine Elizabeth Bennet (played by Anna Maxwell Martin in this adaptation). The story of this three-part suspense serial is based on a P.D. James novel, which in turn derives from the Jane Austen classic novel. Set six years after the end of "Pride and Prejudice," the action begins when Lydia and her husband George Wickham (Matthew Goode) arrive at the Pemberley estate owned by Elizabeth and her husband, Fitzwilliam Darcy (Matthew Rhys, "The Americans").
Instead of the planned annual ball, a murder investigation -- with Lydia at the center of it -- unfolds.

The BBC has unveiled another glimpse of Doctor Who's new Tardis.
In the photo below, Matt Smith - who stars as the Timelord in the BBC sci-fi drama - poses inside the Tardis, which will debut in this year's Christmas special.
It is the second time machine for Smith and the first for his new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman who plays Clara.
Yesterday we reported Smith is set to lock lips with his new sidekick in the Christmas Special.
The pair are said to kiss during an intimate scene in 'The Snowmen', and Smith boasted: “I liked our kiss - that was fun.”
Richard E Grant ('Withnail & I') and Tom Ward ('Silent Witness') also star in the programme which will air on 25 December at 5.15pm on BBC One in the UK, and at 8pm on BBC America.
