A reformed gambler Tittle comes to Dodge City preaching against gambling and the devil. In this case the devil is the saloon owner Ganly who wants Tittle removed by any means forcing Earp to intervene when Tittle preaches in his saloon.
Convict Dobie Jenner arrives in Tombstone after being released from Yuma prison for murder. When his old mining partner George McKean sees him in town, he goes to Earp telling him to run Jenner out of town saying he is dangerous.
Wyatt's deputy, Shotgun Gibbs, runs off a saddle bum who was hassling a pretty young widow who had hired him to help her go to Colorado. Her two kids immediately take a liking to Gibbs while Wyatt and Doc wonder if Gibbs needs a change.
A newspaper man from New York comes to Dodge City to write about it expecting a wild and dangerous town. The town fathers are hoping for a $100,000 loan so Earp is trying to keep the town quiet but minor issues to the town keep occurring.
The Clanton gang is selling liquor to the Apaches with Ike and Phin hoping their contact will tell the location of hidden gold rumored to be in a cave but it is causing unrest in the tribe. When Phin is captured, Earp must help free him.
Morgan and Virgil Earp come to Dodge City to ask Wyatt to join them in Arizona where they plan to ranch. At the same time Old Man Clanton and his boys arrive expecting payment for stolen cattle they sold to Doc's friend Dave Burnett.
A bank robbery in Dodge City is foiled by the citizens while Earp is away. Earp knows the gang is lead by the sister of one of the wounded robbers. Earp arrests the sister but she turns the tables on Earp accusing him of attacking her.
Earp has to contend with the fallout and fights caused by the tall tales told by railroad engineer Tex McKay who has a desire for speed. His false accusation forces Earp to arrest Mike Denby for causing a railroad derailment.
Bat Masterson returns to Dodge City after a good streak of gambling with Cora Warrous and her brother Al. Bat is putting up the money for them to start a cattle ranch in Wyoming. Bat wants Earp to join him but Earp is suspicious of Al.
Earp learns Masterson has dropped out of school and is a scout for the Army. He is being threaten by the killer Sgt. King over a woman using Bat as leverage to keep King away. Earp tries unsuccessfully to talk Bat into leaving her.
Bat returns to Dodge City on the stage with the lovely Nellie Wright hoping to earn a star. He quickly ends up in a gun fight and learns Nellie is part of an outlaw gang but she wants out. Bat soon finds himself a prisoner of the gang.
Bat is running for sheriff at the urging of Earp but Bat is having trouble controlling his temper as his opponent tries to bait him into fights. Bat's girlfriend and her father, a Senator, push Bat to split with Earp but will Bat listen.
The Judge, Bat, and Kelley want Earp to run Doc and Kate Holliday out of Dodge City but Earp doesn't want to as Doc saved his life and has committed no crime. After Doc wounds a man, Earp is forced to act as the two men study each other.
Clum and others want Earp to take a posse after the men he was forced to release but Earp declines. With Behan as the sheriff of the new Cochise County it becomes his task. When they give themselves up, Earp questions Behan's loyalties.
Earp learns Old Man Clanton is moving some of his stolen silver. Earp catches two of the gang and silver but in Tombstone Sheriff Behan releases the men saying they escaped. It is time for a showdown between Earp and Behan over the issue.
Morgan Earp has been helping Wyatt for a month but Morgan's interest in drinking, women and hanging with Doc Holliday bother Wyatt. Wyatt decides Morgan marrying a nice girl like Lucy Tedder would help until he learns more about her.
A divorced woman working the mayor's office and a childhood friend of the Earps, has Virgil Earp arriving to protect Wyatt from her. Her boyfriend's family is not so sure they want her in their family but are jealous of Bat and Wyatt.
Wyatt Earp's insistence on patiently stalking the Thompson brothers with a pair of Indian scouts (rather than a posse) doesn't set well with some influential Ellsworth citizens who demand immediate pursuit and capture of the two fugitives.
An old prospector stumbles into a saloon saying he has been robbed and murdered. He is suffering from a shot that creased his head and mumbling that he had $50,000 in gold stolen from him. Earp is not sure if he was robbed or who did it.
Mayor Hoover declines to run for mayor, so Judge Tobin with Earp's support asks Jim Kelley to run against Slip Madigan. The key issue in the election is the retention of Earp as marshal. Earp decides to resign to ensure Kelley's election.
Earp prepares for trouble when a group known as the Harlequins are expected to return to town. Although they disguise themselves as clowns, they have a deadly serious purpose--they robbed the Bank of Tombstone and want their comrade back.
Earp and Judge Tobin are forced to enforce a rustling law they think is too strict. A group of five ranchers have filed a complaint against another rancher but all of them have been guilty. Even Shotgun Gibbs is accused of stealing Roscoe.
Two half-brothers decide to try a new scheme by themselves to rob the Dodge City State National Bank. However, a new alarm bell in the bank and a wise Earp expecting them pose problems for the men successfully getting away.
With several hundred Chinese in Tombstone, resentment brews among them about their treatment. suddenly a rash of beatings and thefts cause problems for Earp when a man is killed by the Chinese Earp turns to their queen China Mary for help.
