I Went As The Grinch To A "Dress As Your Favorite Christmas Movie" Party

Hallooo, early December survivors! Have you watched your favorite Christmas movie yet this year?

Many of you know my somewhat-controversial favorite...

THE UNMITIGATED GALL

... so when our friend (and FoE) Arielle invited us to a "Dress As Your Favorite Christmas Movie" party...

... there was only one clear choice.

GRINCH IN LEDERHOSEN.
This look is so hot this season.

Which is why I can't wear fur in this 85 degree heat, and decided on more of a Grinchy cos-bound.

This took more work than I expected, so I'll link you everything I used at the end of the post. Also keep scrolling, because I have LOTS more party costumes coming up!

Here's a better reference for the embroidery I tried to match:

Aaaaand here's my finished look!

The "extra large" heart is a purse I clipped to my belt, and it's so chinchilla-soft I couldn't stop petting it. Ahhhh.

I'm also wearing paper earrings made on our Cricut:

What The Art Teacher Wore & For Evermore

Me now that October is over:

MY BRAIN:

::Immediately begins brain-storming while John stares wide-eyed at the stacks of Halloween bins we're still puting away::

Don't worry, this isn't a Christmas post. Yet. Even John and I need some down time, so we've been catching up with friends, cleaning house, and in John's case, practicing Low Fodmap stews. (Y'all have any favorite recipes? We have both fake onion & fake garlic, so I think we can modify most regular recipes. Help!)

We also started watching Rings of Power, and while I'm not usually a drama person and can't handle much violence or darkness, WOW IS IT GOOD. The visuals are so stunning they even surpass the movies(!!) and the cast is phenomenal.

It's definitely gotten more intense by episode 3, though, so we may have to start spacing these out with Disney movies for balance, ha. Can anyone tell me if the violence level gets worse from here?

Right, 'nuff chit chat, lemme bring you some genuine CONTENT.

I bring you my latest two obsessions:

First, What the Art Teacher Wore.

Cassie is a jolt of joyful caffeine in my feed, and the moment I discovered her through a friend I spent over an hour watching every single one of her outfit posts. Cassie just finished an entire month of amazeballs Halloween outfits, but lemme start you off with a cheerful rainbow ensemble:

EMBRACE THE SLOTH WITHIN. Or This One Over Here.

Now that the Halloween frenzy if over, I thought I'd show y'all a fun outing we had a few weeks ago. Our friend Karen luuuurves capybaras, so for her birthday we visited Amazing Animals Inc, a non-profit exotic animal preserve about an hour outside Orlando.

They do educational tours and have capys, sloths, and other fun creatures.

Our tour started in the reptile house, where John baby-talked a snake and I maintained a reasonable distance:

It's not that I don't like snakes, it's that... oh wait, yes, that's it exactly.

Big parrots also make me a little nervous, but these stayed in their house.

I won't bore you with a slideshow of animal pics, but suffice to say there are lots: from Fennec foxes to monkeys to fuzzy things whose names I don't remember. The grounds are lovely, everything looks beautifully lush and well-kept, and the animals clearly adore their caretaker.

In fact the adorable Geoffroy's cat spent our educational talk trying to wrap himself completely around his caregiver's legs:

SO CUTE.

My personal favorite were the lemurs, so it's a shame my best photo of one has it trying to pee on us:

We were told this matriarch is... kinda pissy.

HEYOOOOO

The male lemur was a total sweetheart, though, and cooed at me through the fence and later reached out and touched my hand while I was taking a video:

10 Groups That Just Might Make Facebook Worth Using Again

Happy Friday, gang! WE MADE IT.

And I have fun stuff.

Now I know some of you gave up Facebook ages ago, and others are too young and hip to have ever used Facebook in the first place... which makes me feel old, so we'll be ignoring that fact.

HOWEVER. Hear me out.

As the landscape of social media gets ever crappier and harder to control, the ONLY place bringing me consistent joy online right now are my Facebook groups. The key is to fill your feed with all the happy-making, super-niche interest groups and fan pages you can find, and then unfollow most of your friends/family.  BOOM. Facebook is a healthy place again!

So to get you started on filling your feed with happy-making groups, I've put together a list of some of my favorites. And since I'm already onboard the Halloween train (CHOO CHOO), I'll be skewing them towards the spoopy side.

'Tis the season to join ALL the Fall and Halloween groups, at least for me, and this group lets folks share their collections and home decor, which is endlessly inspiring:

Right now I'm obsessed with Grace N.'s home tour, omigosh:

LOOK AT THIS DINING ROOM.

And this is her living room!

Please click the link up there to see the rest of her house, because it's all giving me grabby hands.

Even if you've never been to Dragon Con, this is a great catch-all of cosplay, memes, and general nerdy fun.

For example, this photo makes me so happy. These three are my Ones That Got Away this year, completely bummed I didn't see them in person, but I'm happy this photo at least exists. (They're from the original Superman movies; remember "Kneel before Zod"?)

Plus occasionally with this group you get a nerdy one-off, like this boldly going glow-up for Piper M.'s new car:

She made & applied the vinyls herself to turn her car into a shuttle craft! YESSS. I so want to do something like this with a Stay Puft theme on ours.

This one's a page, not a group, but it shares fascinating finds I think you're gonna love. It features gothic, steampunky, and just-plain-cool aesthetics, like so:

From tattoos to DIY to wedding photos, this group is for folks to share any and every thing spooky. I especially like the DIYs, like this classic spray foam burning coals effect:

Eurovision 2022: Our Costumes, Food, & Favorites!

We interrupt this overload of Jungle Cruise party posts to bring you... another party post.

But this party is for Eurovision, so it's less punny.

You might remember I watched my first Eurovision ever last year, and how I was instantly hooked. "Song contest" doesn't come close to describing this experience. It's more like a candy-coated rave that bounces from soulful ballads in spinning laser-light sets to psychedelic polka rap and dancers in foil astronaut suits.

That was a fun sentence to write.

Happily our same friends streamed the finale again this year, and made it more of an event by inviting more people and asking us all to dress up, plus bring fun European foods to try.

John and I hit up our local thrift store for something appropriately fabulous, and this jacket immediately threw itself into my cart:

YESSSS.

A few aisles over I found a hot pink tulle skirt to complete the look:

Unfortunately we couldn't find anything nearly as interesting for John, so he spent the night before making his own outfit. Here's a peak at his prop:

Full reveal of John's costume right after these car selfies of my big hair:

I also tried some stuff with my eyeliner.

I really struggled with these photos 'til I realized trying to keep my eyes open when I smile makes me look distant or annoyed. Finally I said, "screw it," smiled like I meant it, and got a picture I actually like:

Yep, here for the happy squinty eyes! And also dino necklaces, because dino necklaces are cool.

Now. Who's ready to see John's Eurovision ensemble?

Lightsaber Rainbows, Flying Duck Orchids, & The Best Cosplay Mashup Of All TIME

It's Friday, you fantastic beast! You made it.

Here come a bunch of my favorite finds this week to celebrate.

Did you know there are lightsaber meetups at Disney's Galaxy's Edge? I didn't! There was one last month, and look how pretty:

The group that arranges the meetups is Galaxy's Edge Discord, here's a photo from their IG account:

SO COOL.

This is all fan-run, so give them a follow for future meetup dates.

*****

Also in the Stuff-I-Never-Knew-Existed category, this is called a flying duck orchid:

They're native to Australia and are teeny-tiny, with blooms less than an inch long. You should also know I'm imagining a little purple bandana around one and humming the Darkwing Duck theme song.

Speaking of old cartoons, let's see if anyone else gets a kick out of watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dance-fight their way down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom:

Cartoon Shoes, Alien TP, & The Cutest Mini Moon Knight

Happy Tuesday, adventurers! I come bearing treasure from the distant wilds of the spidery inter-webs.

Also this photo of a yard here in Florida:

(pic by Sherry K, friend of a FoE.)

Just 'cuz.

:D

Starting with the latest custom kicks by the queen of cell-shading herself, Ginoza Costuming:

HEART-EYES

These are themed to the new Borderlands video game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which I can't wait to play with John.

Even if you're not a fan of the game, though, who wouldn't want cartoon shoes? Here are more Brittani's painted:

You can see more - including Brittani's internationally acclaimed cosplay - at the Ginoza Costuming Facebook page. (Srsly, prepare to have your jaw drop. This woman's got SKILLS.)

*****

Because I'm a sucker for all things glowy and colorful, I bring you the creations of Fiore Di Luce, or Flowers of Light, in Milano, Italy:

My Google Translate isn't working, but I believe these are all handmade by a single couple, Elisabetta & Pier. From the process photos the lamps look like a form of paper fiber stretched over individual wire frames. Amazing.

Their lamps and pendant lights come in all sorts of fantastical floral designs, plus there are a few with butterfly wings:

FOE & Tell: Glowing Dragon Eggs, Flying Dogs, & A Wedding With Oscar The Grouch

It's done! THE BANGING IS DONE.

::chair dancing::

Ahh, sweet, blissful silence.

Yep, as of yesterday afternoon we have a brand new roof that looks exactly like our old roof, except this one has that exciting new feature that makes all the money in your bank account disappear.

::sour deadpan stare::

But enough about my boring roof. Let's talk about Daya's daughter and these creative problem solving skills:

Bahaha!

THE FACE. That is the face of a drama queen who has been bested but doesn't know how to process her defeat, y'all. Brilliant. Maybe next we have to transport Eva I should put her in a onesie, and then John and I can carry her around on a pole. (Don't worry, I won't. Probably.)

Oh right, I skipped the part where I tell you I'm sharing more of my favorite Foe finds today! It's been a little while, so let's throw back to Anna's INCREDIBLE Christmas tree dragon, Myrrhtle:

I was captivated with this build from Anna's very first post asking for construction tips, and the end result does NOT disappoint.

A gorgeous rainbow dragon AND a punny hashtag? BE STILL MY HEART. Head to Anna's post to see the rest of her finished photos.

I know you're going to love Jordan's choice of wedding venue:

Y'all. She got married with the cast of Sesame Street!

This is at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. If you've never been, put this magical place on your bucket list; it's a combination museum/theater, and includes the entire Sesame Street & Muppets gang in their exhibits, along with screen-used characters from Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal, and more. Here's my photo tour from the year they had an entire area dedicated to Labyrinth, it was INCREDIBLE.

Jordan, I hope you'll share more wedding photos when you have them; I'm dying to know how the ceremony/reception was set up!

Remember a couple years ago when the Queen wore a green dress and everybody was photoshopping dogs and pizza onto her outfit?

WELL... (I'm already laughing)... look what Mindy did:

My Favorite TikToks To Keep The Gloomies Away

It's Friday and my panic's up, booo. Probably just my hormones having their monthly Kylo Ren moment, but trying to explain that to the screaming ferret in my brain doesn't seem to help.

You know what does help? After taking the appropriate meds?

THESE TIKTOKS.
(If you don't see the videos after a few seconds try refreshing the page; sometimes they get stuck loading.)

@dustymdouglas prairie dog theatre 🎭 #shakespeare #romeoandjuliet #prairiedog #foryou ♬ prairie dog theatre - Dusty Douglas

You have your volume up, right?
@officialcinetv #snlsketch #impressions #impersonation #voiceimpressions #movieactor #snlfunny #foryoupage #comedycentral #comedian #comedy #rossmarquand #voiceactor ♬ Monkeys Spinning Monkeys - Kevin MacLeod & Kevin The Monkey

John sent me a bunch of these, btw, so he gets some credit. I only log in to TikTok a couple times a month, and every time I have about 50 forwarded links from John. (Forwarding funny links is the "flower and chocolates" of our time, am I right?)

I think I've shared Parkour Cat before, but it may be my favorite TikTok ever. I simply can't NOT laugh every time I see it. (I tried once, and strained something.)

My First Asian Lantern Festival: "Into The Wild"

Happy Friday, you ferocious firecracker! Have you smiled yet today?

If not, I got you:

Last weekend John and I visited our first ever Asian Lantern Festival at the Central Florida Zoo. These lighted festivals are apparently all the rage in zoos across the U.S. but I'm told ours is an especially snazzy example. Even better, this particular exhibit, "Into The Wild," travels! So some of you have seen these exact displays in your state, and some of you might see them soon. I love that, really spreads the joy around.

If you can't watch the video where you are right now, never fear; I also have photos, and there's so much more to see! I tried to video the ones with a lot of motion, but I took regular pics for the rest.

A line of giant candy-colored snails greeted us in the parking lot. Peep that reflection in the pond!

The entry is flanked by these froggy friends:

If you saw my video, you know they blink! ("JOHN, THEY BLINK!! YES I KNOW I'M BEING TOO LOUD.") Going in I only expected a few static displays, so this was my first inkling that we were in for something special.

These festivals are a DELIGHT to photograph, because by the time you lower the exposure enough to capture the colors, all the people in frame practically disappear.

("De-light"? See what I did there?)

The narrow entry path was flanked by lighted cacti, snakes, and even a giant scorpion and spider. This iguana was my favorite, though:

Snail TV, The Muppets Animal, & A Blockbusters Basement

Happy Tuesday, my tasty totchos! (I'm trying out some new nicknames - expect a food theme.) How was your weekend? I've been alternating between chair-dancing to Encanto songs and snuffling back tears to Encanto songs, ha. (I usually forget to mention Movie Nights here, but that was our pick last Friday/Sunday on the Epbot Discord. SO GOOD.)

Now, let's see what gems the internet has to offer us today, shall we?

Over in Jim Henson's Creature Shop (a FB fan group) Emily E. made her boyfriend a plush version of himself... in Animal form:

AAAAAA! Y'all. We all need Animal avatar plushies now. This needs to be a thing.

Emily's boyfriend is a drummer who loves ice cream, plus Emily made a replica of his favorite hoodie. AMAZING. See Emily's original post with a few more photos here.

Here's a fascinating nugget and resource for you crafters, art lovers, and anyone interested in copyright law:

Jasmine Becket Griffith - a rock star in the art world with official pieces in the Disney parks, Hot Topic, and shops around the world - is putting tons of her artwork into the public domain under Creative Commons licensing. Meaning anyone can use it, modify it, and sell it, for free. o.0 Jasmine says she may be the first living artist to do this, which is very possible.

Griffith is starting with 625 pieces, but reports she has 5 to 6 thousand she plans to add. She is actively encouraging folks to use her art on merch and sell it, no strings attached. (Though of course credit or a donation via her Patreon is always welcome.)

Check out her FB announcement here for more details on the how and why, then go browse all of Jasmine's available works for download here on her website. I'm excited to see what some of you do with this, and VERY interested to see if this will help or hurt Jasmine's income going forward. Such a fascinating, gutsy experiment.

Over in 90's Nostalgia Nick C. turned part of his basement into a 90's era video store, and it's a blockbustin' blast from the past:

Raise your hand if this photo brings you back to your childhood.

::raises both hands::

And tell me this next photo doesn't make your inner 14 year old start screeching:

Now THAT is a Saturday night. Just needs some fresh-baked cookies.

Plus - PLUS - Nic added all kinds of fun galaxy lights and LED strips for nighttime!

Weird & Wonderful Finds From A National Antique Fair

A few weeks ago John and I trekked out to Mount Dora for one of my favorite events of the year: Renninger's Antique Extravaganza. For one weekend in November (and another in January & February) over 800 antiques vendors from all around the U.S. set up shop in one enormous field, and it. is. glorious.

When I mentioned this to a friend she asked, "So, what are you going to look for?"

I stared at her blankly. "Oh, no" I said, "That's not how this works."

After all, you don't just set out to find a couple of taxidermied bullfrogs playing billiards... they find you.

You know, later. In your nightmares.

And now, in the spirit of one of my favorite Facebook groups, Weird and Wonderful Secondhand Finds, all me to present my favorite findings of the day.

Starting with this Wonder Bread-themed clown head gumball machine, because even just putting all those words together is a work of art.

I waited 'til he wasn't looking to take the photo.

::evil grin::

I don't know if it's supposed to be Wonder Bread themed, but if not that's a wild coincidence:

Maybe the gumballs were bread flavored.

And now that you're making that face, here's a black velvet painting of an alicorn flying over Saturn:

Once you notice that wing placement, it's all you see.
(There's a "butt-flap" joke in here somewhere, I just know it.)

I have no memory of taking this next photo, so it's like a little gift to myself from past Jen:
