it was amazing
bookshelves: agatha-christie, mystery, read-in-2016, audio, libby-app, read-in-2019
Read 2 times. Last read November 25, 2019 to December 20, 2019.

Since I've been recommending this to everyone, I thought I'd listen to the audio version and see how it held up.
Yep. Still (to me) the best!

What's my favorite Agatha Christie novel? Well, I'd have a hard time picking between Murder on the Orient Express and Sleeping Murder. But this one is more, um, realish?
The idea that what happened in Murder on the Orient Express could actually happen...is pretty far-fetched. And, yes Sleeping Murder is (by today's standards) kinda outlandish, too.
BUT.
Less outlandish than MotOE. <--MY OPINION

Plus, I love me some Miss Marple!

description

The main characters are newlyweds Gwenda & Giles, but Jane Marple is introduced early on as the elderly aunt of Giles's cousin (some of you will recognize Raymond West from other books!). And when Gwenda begins to think she's losing her mind due to some startling coincidences at her newly purchased house, and a frightening reaction to the line of a play...
*rubs hands together*
Well, naturally, Miss Marple sticks her nose (delicately) into Gwenda's troubles, and steps in to help her sort things out.

description

If you're a fan of Miss Marple mysteries, this is one that you definitely don't want to skip. I think it shows a different side to her intellect and personality by having her play as a secondary character. While the two main characters bumble around to the best of their ability, this little old lady is gently nudging them in the right direction. And, ultimately, she's also the one who steps in to save the day.

God bless the tough chicks who knit!

Trish I LOVE Miss Marple (but only the original)!

message 2: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I've not watched the tv show, just read the books. :)

message 3: by Shan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shan There've been so many Miss Marples on film and tv. I thought the most recent one (was it Joan Hickson?) was really interesting, with the backstory the tv writers gave her. She wasn't Miss Marple from the books, but she was a good character in her own right. I just wish Agatha Christie had written more Miss Marple stories - I'd gladly trade some of the Poirots for more Marples.

I've seen a couple of episodes and then there was this new Miss Marple - who is so NOT Miss Marple. Never read any of the books but they are on my list (I already have one).

Nice review.

P.S. Joan Hickson IS Miss Marple, just like David Suchet IS Hercule Poirot:

Miss Marple

Anne I'm always surprised at how easily Agatha Christie's stuff goes down, especially considering how old they are, you know? I keep meaning to read more of her stuff. Hopefully over the summer!

The mark of a classic.

michelle+8 I vote for Sleeping Murder as her best work! And I totally agree with the commenter who said they'd trade a few Poirot novels for a more Miss Marple!

Anoushka I want to read this now

Adrian Great review Anne, One of my faves as well. Although to me Miss Marple is Joan Hickson :-)

message 23: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne It's harder to find those images, though. lol

message 24: by BellaGBear (new)

BellaGBear I love miss marple! Must check this one out. And there is so much hidden behind a crafty person (I quilt and embroider)

Pranit Have you read Five Little Pigs? Its a Hercule Poirot novel. For some reason, I ended up reading them one after the other and found the stories to be similar. Probably that's why I didn't enjoy this one as much as you did. Nevertheless, Agatha Christie's storytelling is still so relevant and amazing in today's day and age! That always surprises me!

I just love that she's old but relevant and smart. I hope I'll still be that way when I'm a doddering elderly lady. lol

message 28: by Ankith (new)

Ankith After completing Agatha Christie's books, whose books would be ideal for mystery genre?...I would love it if it were a series like Hercule poirot or miss Marple...

message 29: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne You're looking for more cozy mysteries, right?
Try The Magpie Murders to tide you over.

Um...anyone got any ideas for a series?

message 30: by Kye (new)

Kye Flannery Ah! Geraldine McEwan incontrovertibly my favorite Ms Marple! She is just the tiniest bit creepy, which I love. She is good, but not *nice*. Agreed, we’re all saved by the crafty relevant ladies... Thank you for this review!

MarilynLovesNature I love Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple also.

message 32: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Yes! Although, I like them both and don't really have a preference. But I haven't binged Miss Marple in the same way I have Poirot, so...?

Franziska Self Fisken I love Miss Marple, but this is not my favourite Agatha Christie. I prefer several of her crime novels including Murder on the Orient Express, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, And thd there were none.

Franziska Self Fisken A very good plot, with a satisfying end in that the solution fits all the dangling red herrings

I love the Miss Marple character, and I'm surprised that Agatha Christie gave up writing Jane Marple books given this was written in the 1940s.

However, this is not my favourite Agatha Christie. I prefer several of her crime novels including Murder on the Orient Express, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, And then there were None.
