it was amazing
bookshelves: united-states, animals

The fact that I loved Ducks, Newburyport to bits, although I am aware that some things did not go so well, the fact that since I finished reading this novel I have been feeling like a part of me is gone, the fact that now I have to literally force myself not to start all over again, the fact that I am grateful to my Goodreads friends for following my crazy - crazee! - journey and making this reading experience even more special.

Review to come.

Fionnuala That image captures the slow Elegant movements of elephants so well Jola, and it's beautiful!

message 2: by Katia (new)

Katia N Wow, what a beautiful image, dear Jola! If not before, now i would definitely start thinking of those elephants according to the "fact". No ducks yet?

message 3: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Fionnuala, so happy you enjoyed it! In my case, this painting was love at first sight. 🐘🐘🐘

message 4: by Jola (last edited 14 juil. 2020 19:36) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Katia, I find these elephants quite inspiring and consider writing Elephants, Lublin, despite the fact that they are not a typical element of the local scenery. 🙂 As for ducks, they finally started to appear for a while, looking forward to longer entries.

message 5: by Ilse (new)

Ilse Dear Jola, I cannot wait to read Elephants, Lublin. I trust that the colours in it will be as magical as the ones of this gorgeous image!

message 6: by Katia (new)

Katia N You made me smile, dear Jola. I would be the second in the queue after Ilse to get “Elephants. Lublin. “ I am totally sure it will be very impressive. Not sure how many pages you are currently targeting with such a wonderful title:-). I really look forward which animal is the next in your updates:-)

message 7: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Ilse, thanks so much for your support. Beware that I might change the title though and substitute elephants with something more accessible, which may result in Rabbits, Lublin or Guinea pigs, Lublin or Pigeons, Lublin. I will keep you up to date.

message 8: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Katia, so sweet of you to express vivid interest in my literary endeavour. As I find the number of pages Lucy Ellmann created slightly overwhelming, I may opt for a shorter novel but in case I stick to the original size, the book will be equipped with four tiny wheels, like a suitcase, to make it more portable.

message 9: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear T., I'm honoured to add you to the waiting list! Unfortunately, pronto and 1040 pages sort of collide so thanks in advance for your patience.

By the way, the word 'pronto' at once made me think about a passage I read yesterday:
'the fact that I never expected to hear from the Whispering Willow again, but they sent me an email as soon as I got home, saying both pies were “fantastic” and they wanted more pronto, time is money, the fact that that’s how Italians answer the phone, “Pronto,” the fact that Mommy never knew what to say when they said that, the fact that she struggled with Italian during that year in Rome, poor duck, the fact that once she memorized a whole spiel and managed to get it all out, over the phone, and the person at the other end answered with an equally long long spiel, and she was sunk'. 🙂

message 10: by Katia (new)

Katia N Oh, dear Jola. First of all thank you for keeping my place in the queue and I object changing this to Lublin. Pigeons. We have enough of them here in London. So please stick to the elephants. But I am very happy with the idea of the wheels😊 Btw I’ve read the quote in your reply to T and I see that the ducks are starting to appear though slightly differently than I expected. (Poor mommy 🦆).

message 11: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Katia, how about whales? Whales on wheels sound promising. OK, no pigeons then. I'm not a huge fan either so it won't be a big sacrifice. Yes, ducks have just started appearing more boldly but I'm still hoping for more.

message 12: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear T., exactly! And I absolutely love these coincidences and little crossing paths.

message 13: by BookMonkey (new)

BookMonkey Jola, I am loving your updates as you journey through Ducks. They should be compiled and published as a companion volume!

message 14: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear BookMonkey, thanks a bunch for your sweet comment!🤗 So kind of you. The reading process goes slowly, as I don't want to miss a thing, so I will be flooding you with updates for a while.

message 15: by Hanneke (new) - added it

Hanneke Somehow I am not surprised by the impact of the croaking of the frogs, dear Jola, but it's amazing that they can count the number! I love this kind of information!

message 16: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Hanneke, so glad you enjoyed it! I wonder if the croaking is always identical or with a personal touch. 🐸

message 17: by Hanneke (new) - added it

Hanneke Let's just assume it shows some individual personality!

message 18: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Their deceptively similar croaks may actually be a secret love code, differing in level of seductiveness. 🙂

message 19: by Hanneke (new) - added it

Hanneke I'll certainly pay attention the next time I hear croaking, dear Jola!

message 20: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola 😄 Me too! Maybe we should make recordings of Dutch and Polish frogs and then analyze them comparatively. 🧐

message 21: by Hanneke (last edited 21 juil. 2020 15:57) (new) - added it

Hanneke Sounds like a worthwhile research project, Jola! I'm in!

message 22: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola 😀👍🏻

message 23: by Hanneke (new) - added it

Hanneke Such a lovely picture of the girl in the armchair, Jola!

message 24: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola So happy you found it lovely, dear Hanneke. I wish we knew some details of this young lady. She must have been a remarkable person for sure! Besides, I can't stop looking at the spiky ears of her tiny companion on the left!

message 25: by Hanneke (new) - added it

Hanneke Yes, so cute!

message 26: by Fionnuala (new) - added it

Fionnuala Oh me oh my, the chimps photo and update quote are so good! You're going to have an amazing illustrated edition of Ducks before you're finished, Jola!

message 27: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Fionnuala, thanks so much for your lovely comment! Speaking of being finished, I'm at 84% at the moment, already scared of the feeling of emptiness I will face soon. 😔

message 28: by Prerna (new) - added it

Prerna Well, color me intrigued dear Jola. Definitely going to add this to my tbr.

message 29: by Ken (new) - added it

Ken Congrats on crossing the finish line. I am one humbled reader who ducked responsibility on this one. Still, any book that reveals the president's Rump for what it is is worthwhile in my book (or should I say, in Ellmann's book).

Lisa (NY) Wow! Sounds amazing...

message 31: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Prerna, I hope it will be an amazing read for you also. Of course, I would be delighted to read your review afterwards.

message 32: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Ken, thanks so much. I adored this book so crossing the finish line was as easy as duck soup. 😊 Trump is mentioned many, many times and no wonder Lucy Ellmann blows him to smithereens.

message 33: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Lisa, I found it truly unique and fascinating. Such a lovely feeling!

message 34: by Elena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elena Sala Glad you liked it, Jola!!!

message 35: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Elena, I felt desperate when I saw THE END.

message 36: by Katia (new)

Katia N Oh dear Jola! Is it over? I am going to miss the whales and elephants! Now all my hopes on your 📚 😎

message 37: by Elena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elena Sala Jola wrote: "Dear Elena, I felt desperate when I saw THE END."

I can imagine that. I felt I missed the narrator, like a kind of deprivation, when I finished reading it. Besides, I love animals and that business of the lioness being hunted by all those crazee armed men and the lost dog made me really distraught!!

TBV (on hiatus) Jola, I've enjoyed your journey with "Ducks", and I look forward to reading the final instalment.

message 39: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Katia, unfortunately, yes, it's definitely over. The book is pretty addictive and I'm displaying symptoms of withdrawal at the moment. 🥴 Fortunately, the novel by Can Xue is also pretty crazy and engaging, so I hope I won't start compulsively rereading Ducks, Newburyport.

message 40: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Elena, my impressions were identical! Such a unique book and the narrator is simply unforgettable. Chickens, boarlets, cats and company were absolutely wonderful! It's sad that the author's observations on the way people treat the environment were so upsetting, even crushing at times, but unfortunately, they seem to be based on facts.

message 41: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear TBV, I'm so happy you enjoyed my updates. I found this a truly immersive read.

message 42: by Fran (new)

Fran Jola...your little mini review was awesome! I'm so glad you enjoyed this tome!

message 43: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Fran, thanks so much for your sweet comment! Ducks, Newburyport was huge, both literally and metaphorically. 🙂

message 44: by Fran (new)

Fran Jola...go out and buy those duck pencils...after all, they are school supplies....lol

message 45: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Thanks for perfect justification, dear Fran! 😇

Violeta ...the fact that now I have to literally force myself not to start all over again,

Oh my my, you have floored me with this one, Jola!! :)
And with your illustrations! I couldn't see them in the summer since I must have been on the app when I visited your review, but now that I did, I find them so inspired!

message 47: by Jola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola 😀 Dear Violeta, I regret I still haven't been able to write a proper review. It's great news you liked the illustrations I added. I'm seriously considering rereading this unforgettable book some day. 🦆🦆🦆

message 48: by Q (new) - added it

Q I hear your love of this book. I have wanted to read too since I read a review when it first came but I fear I will forget it it’s finished because it’s so long. My memory isn’t so good these days. Did you keep notes as you read?

message 49: by Q (new) - added it

Q Sorry for the surprise typos; hope you got the gist of this.

message 50: by Jola (last edited 15 avr. 2021 20:23) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jola Dear Q, you are right - I truly fell in love with this book. As for the notes, I kept adding some updates here on Goodreads and also jotted down some general thoughts in my paper notebook. I think there's no need to write down details though, as there are many recurring topics in this novel, some issues are discussed many times, almost obsessively. Yes, the novel is long indeed but if you like it as much as I did, you might feel very upset at the end and wish it was even longer. 😀 Enjoy this unforgettable read!
