Green Eggs and Ham (Beginner Books)

This famous rhyming story, “Green Eggs And Ham”, took a significant tour in my life. My parents put toddler books away, until they moved and returned them to me. My youngest brother must have this one. I scooped-up a copy, which I will exchange for mine. I only recalled one phrase; pretty good for forty years and couldn’t wait to see it anew: “On a boat, with a goat”! I had thought there also might be a moat.
The way I quenched my eagerness to reread that phrase, is special. My Mom had a health scare, whereby low energy from an infection led to pneumonia. Mom survived all of it and after 2½ months, is home! I visited every Saturday and on July 26, read this and “Meet My Cats” by Lesley Anne Ivory. Ron always accompanied me, who loves his Mother-in-law and her pleasure in berries he picks, food he makes from our gardens, and the flowers I gather for her.
An elderly gentleman was next to Mom. He is instantly likeable and gushed about cats with us. I focused on Mom, whom I only saw weekly but certainly greeted and acknowledged him. He switched hospitals for heart surgery and we pray everything turned out all right for this fine person. As I neared and reached the long-anticipated goat and boat pages, I cheered; which made the gentleman laugh. I am sure he enjoyed the cat book, too. He joked about Dr. Seuss the next week.
We only had two Dr. Seuss books. Mom confirmed that I loved this one; delight that has returned as a grown-up. I am gladdened by these new memories: of cheering up the hospital stays of my Mom and the worthy gentleman, with a fun, rollicking book published twelve years before I was born.
