it was amazing

Really at a loss as to how to review this behemoth door-stopper of a book. Although very early on I harbored thoughts of DNF'ing it, I'm so glad I labored on, since at some point, the book becomes downright addictive and it's difficult to put down. I still have a few quibbles, mainly that although much of the 'stream-of-consciousness' format makes sense and is often clever and humorous, there are also times that there are non-sequiturs or words/lists that come totally out of left field... it's not necessarily the length that disturbed me as the fact so much of it is stellar, that those times when I felt the author was a bit indulgent... bugged me.

Minor complaint though, since this is such a sui generis piece of work, and it ultimately rewards the time invested. I'd suggest anyone contemplating the climb up the mountain to read the Kindle edition, as this is a book that requires so much backtracking to search for previous names/situations and definition assistance that it really helps to have those features readily available. It doesn't QUITE top my Booker rankings for this year (that honor goes to Ms. Levy), but it comes in at a close second.

Fun fact: the LAST book that took me ten days to read was last year's Booker winner - which was 1/3 the length!

PS.... one of the best things about the political underpinnings of the book is that Ellmann dares bring up a topic that NO major media outlet has had the cojones to report: namely the all too credible allegations that the faux president, in tandem with recently deceased convicted pedophile J. Epstein, raped a 13 year old girl. Should you care to learn the facts about that case, go to Justiceforkatie.com.

CanadianReader Does it feel as long as it is? I’m reluctant to even attempt something of that heft!

message 2: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug There is this weird dynamic that I've experienced and several others have mentioned also that it is somewhat slow to get into, but at a certain point it becomes almost hypnotic/addictive and you don't want to do ANYTHING but continue reading... so don't be scared off by its length ... it is really fairly easy and comprehensible and DOESN'T require huge amounts of brain energy to 'figure out'! I say go for it! :-)

Beverly Same here. At about page 150 I started reading compulsively.

Well, that’s very good to hear. Not out in Canada yet, however, or at least not yet available from the library. Does it feel like a contender?

Biblioasis, a Canadian company, has already released a Kindle version, and their hard copies are out on the 10th, but both Books Depository UK and Blackwell's will ship the UK edition to Canada for free (but I can certainly understand waiting for the library to carry it!).

It's always hard to tell what the judges will do, since they all have their own agendas (for example, there is one judge who is good friends with Evaristo, so her book will probably get a bump solely on THAT front) ... I think it would kind of be hard for Ducks to be ignored ... and I would, at this juncture, definitely rank it as in the top 6 of the 12 I've read...

Alysson Oliveira I totally agree. It is addictive. I was reading it a few minutes ago, and it occurred to me that I'll miss this book when I finish it.

message 7: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug Indeed .... me 2! It is fairly sui generis in that respect, I think - or at least I cannot think of another book I've read that is so compulsively compelling WITHOUT it being plot driven...

Beverly I miss it too. My last two reads were fast meh reads. Trying Chris Power’s Mothers next—need me some stories

message 9: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug Ohhhh ...lemme know how that is - I've had an ARC of that FOREVER, but haven't gotten around to it yet... Ducks is my last Booker till the Atwood comes out, but want to reread Handmaid's beforehand as I have little memory of my first read (since that was when it first came out).

Beverly Yay! I’m so glad you loved it

Doug It's doesn't QUITE beat out Levy for my top spot in the Booker rankings... but is definitely 2nd! :-) I just really don't know what to say about it in a review ....

message 12: by Ace (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ace Yay, Doug. Well done, what a great feeling to have that behind you now. 5 stars too!!! I am really looking forward to the rest of the book.

message 13: by Hugh (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hugh So glad we agree on this one!

message 14: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Fulcher That's a relief - I was dreading this one winning and the Doug 2 star takedown would have heightened that risk :-) Glad you enjoyed it though

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer Paul and I completely disagree on this one so even though I loved it I was hoping for a Doug 2 star review to predict it as the winner.

Looking like Lanny must be nailed on to win now!!!

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer There is another reason to read in Kindle (which I did first read) rather than paper (which I am attempting second read) - it’s actually a very difficult book to take on planes, trains and automobiles (where I do most of my reading) due to its sheer bulk.

I took my copy on several buses and trains - I didn't find it much more unwieldy than some of the hardbacks (Orchestra of Minorities is probably the heaviest of those this year, but Girl Woman Other is probably the heaviest per word of text!)

message 18: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug Lanny and Girl/Woman are languishing at the bottom of my rankings .. so one of them IS sure to win! (Shoot me NOW!) LOL

message 19: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Fulcher My personal favourite and betting tip respectively (although I actually think Lanny will miss out even at shortlist stage)

message 20: by Doug (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug I'll have to finalize both my rankings and predictions... and will probably publish later today...

message 22: by Andi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andi Any advice, or just jump in?? I did purchase the kindle version.

Doug Andi wrote: "Any advice, or just jump in?? I did purchase the kindle version."

Other than the length, it isn't really all that daunting! So yes, just jump right in ... and DON'T get discouraged if it doesn't grab you initially ....it took me a good 200 pages or more to get hooked - but then it took off like gangbusters, so be patient!

message 24: by Fionnuala (new) - added it

Fionnuala I had a similar experience to yours, Doug—I thought about abandoning Ducks but eventually became completely addicted and would have read another 1000 pages easily.

I liked your little dig at Pink book ;-) I thought of that book while reading Ducks when Ellmann's narrator comments on how sunsets remain glorious no matter the tragedies that may be happening in the world. I wondered if Ellmann had read Burns...

message 25: by Doug (last edited 15 fév. 2020 21:04) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Doug Thanx! I think Ellmann's book was probably out being shopped around by the time Burns' book was published ... but who knows?

I'm having a similar experience with my current book (The Abomination), which I found tedious and VERY slow going for the first 100 pages, and almost decided to DNF - then it all began to click and now I am addicted to it and can't put it down!
