Really at a loss as to how to review this behemoth door-stopper of a book. Although very early on I harbored thoughts of DNF'ing it, I'm so glad I labored on, since at some point, the book becomes downright addictive and it's difficult to put down. I still have a few quibbles, mainly that although much of the 'stream-of-consciousness' format makes sense and is often clever and humorous, there are also times that there are non-sequiturs or words/lists that come totally out of left field... it's not necessarily the length that disturbed me as the fact so much of it is stellar, that those times when I felt the author was a bit indulgent... bugged me.
Minor complaint though, since this is such a sui generis piece of work, and it ultimately rewards the time invested. I'd suggest anyone contemplating the climb up the mountain to read the Kindle edition, as this is a book that requires so much backtracking to search for previous names/situations and definition assistance that it really helps to have those features readily available. It doesn't QUITE top my Booker rankings for this year (that honor goes to Ms. Levy), but it comes in at a close second.
Fun fact: the LAST book that took me ten days to read was last year's Booker winner - which was 1/3 the length!
PS.... one of the best things about the political underpinnings of the book is that Ellmann dares bring up a topic that NO major media outlet has had the cojones to report: namely the all too credible allegations that the faux president, in tandem with recently deceased convicted pedophile J. Epstein, raped a 13 year old girl. Should you care to learn the facts about that case, go to Justiceforkatie.com.

"Ok, I finally gave in... all this talk about cinnamon rolls was getting to me, so I got in and made my own (from scratch, natch!) this morning. Our narrator probably wouldn't approve as I used BOTH raisins and pecans in mine! :-O!"

Well, that’s very good to hear. Not out in Canada yet, however, or at least not yet available from the library. Does it feel like a contender?
Biblioasis, a Canadian company, has already released a Kindle version, and their hard copies are out on the 10th, but both Books Depository UK and Blackwell's will ship the UK edition to Canada for free (but I can certainly understand waiting for the library to carry it!).
It's always hard to tell what the judges will do, since they all have their own agendas (for example, there is one judge who is good friends with Evaristo, so her book will probably get a bump solely on THAT front) ... I think it would kind of be hard for Ducks to be ignored ... and I would, at this juncture, definitely rank it as in the top 6 of the 12 I've read...
Looking like Lanny must be nailed on to win now!!!
I took my copy on several buses and trains - I didn't find it much more unwieldy than some of the hardbacks (Orchestra of Minorities is probably the heaviest of those this year, but Girl Woman Other is probably the heaviest per word of text!)
Exactly that! :-)
Other than the length, it isn't really all that daunting! So yes, just jump right in ... and DON'T get discouraged if it doesn't grab you initially ....it took me a good 200 pages or more to get hooked - but then it took off like gangbusters, so be patient!
I liked your little dig at Pink book ;-) I thought of that book while reading Ducks when Ellmann's narrator comments on how sunsets remain glorious no matter the tragedies that may be happening in the world. I wondered if Ellmann had read Burns...
I'm having a similar experience with my current book (The Abomination), which I found tedious and VERY slow going for the first 100 pages, and almost decided to DNF - then it all began to click and now I am addicted to it and can't put it down!
