I hated pretty much everything about this.
The only reason I didn't dnf was because I wanted to watch them die suffering and begging for death. The main characters, that is.

I was like
Where is Red Priestess Melisandre when I need her most?
Come my Lady and burn them all!!™

through the whole book.

They are probably the most awful characters I have ever read about. Just imagine a face with pure disgust, multiply it seven times and that was me for like 6 hours straight.

I don't want to answer every question about why, so here are the updates I made while I was reading it:

1, 39% This is the most disgusting thing I read in 2020. Congratulation. It would be an instant dnf if I wasn't buddy reading the book.
(Patroclus had sex with the woman who is pregnant with Achilles' child just because why not. I almost puked.)
description

2, 60% Am I supposed to be amazed by them? That they were so kind and generous to save that girl from rape?
Guess what! That girl only needed to be saved because they went there and killed everyone but her.
Fuck, I hate this book so much. I was told this is a sad story, but I really don't care if the main characters die. I hate them both.

3, 63% I could not even see the ugliness of the deaths anymore, the brains, the shattered bones that later I would wash from my skin and hair. All I saw was his beauty, his singing limbs, the quick flickering of his feet.
description

4, 67% “I left one son alive,” he said. “The eighth son. So that their line would not die.”
How fucking generous of you. 👏👏 I bet that boy will be grateful. -.-

5, 72% Listen to me well, Patroclus. Briseis doesn't love you in any shape or form. She has Stockholm syndrome.

6, 80% Just so y'all know: the only reason I'm still reading this is because I want to see them die at the end with a lot of suffering.

It's such a relief I'm not the only one who hates this book. Everyone seems to love it so much.

Mrinmayi @tappkalina
That's what I thought!!
This book was sooo hyped up
I expected some epic story but just couldn't get invested in the plot
I hated Achilles mom the most

message 11: by Rosie (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rosie Henry Omg😂 I read the Iliad last year for school and I was interested in the dynamic between Patroclus and Achilles, so I was super excited to start tsoa but it’s pretty boring. . .

tappkalina Rose wrote: "Omg😂 I read the Iliad last year for school and I was interested in the dynamic between Patroclus and Achilles, so I was super excited to start tsoa but it’s pretty boring. . ."

understatement

tappkalina iRead wrote: "“Just wanted to watch them die”

I imagined them a painful death with a lot of suffering. They were probably the most awful characters I have ever read about.

tappkalina filming.pages wrote: "How and why Patroclus was like this...? 😭"

I don't know the original story, but after this I don't even want to know what's going on with them.

sol✯ this is the first negative review I have seen of this book. You are bold my friend.

tappkalina sol wrote: "this is the first negative review I have seen of this book. You are bold my friend."

Most of the time I can see why others love a book even if I don't. But this one... I can't tell you a single positive thing about it. One of the worst books I have ever read. If not the worst.
My brain can't comprehend why anyone would even like it.

Keira.Reads Song Of Achilles is one of my all time favourite books, but this review...

N_Readbooks This review is so funny😂 But I partly agree Patroclus was not the best main character and the plot was really slow

tappkalina Keira.Reads wrote: "Song Of Achilles is one of my all time favourite books, but this review..."

Don't worry, there are people who hate my faves, too lol

Not the best? He was the worst!

Why though?

Nemo ☠️ i read this during my Classics Obsession Phase and loved it and now i'm terrified to reread it because i feel like i'm fully gonna hate it and only liked it in the first place because aNciEnT GrEeCe and it was b4 i started reading lgbtq fiction so i was desperate for a crumb of representation

i just know im gonna hate it now, i can feel it

Nemo ☠️ @tappkalina

i mean shit, that does sound fun. oh god, i'm gonna read this again aren't i

message 28: by Nabiela (new)

Nabiela Read this book a while ago, and I can't really remember the author's spin on the story. I appreciate the lyricality of the writing, but it was depressing as all heck. That is all. Everybody was tortured for tortures sake. That seemed to be the main plot device.

I don't know the original story, but how is this everyone's favorite is one of my biggest questions in life, because it was awful.

message 33: by Kay (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kay I was so excited for this book bc everyone hyped it up and I HATED it. It was boring, the characters were annoying, and I was not invested in their love story whatsoever. Their deaths were the best part of the whole book

tappkalina Kay wrote: "I was so excited for this book bc everyone hyped it up and I HATED it. It was boring, the characters were annoying, and I was not invested in their love story whatsoever. Their deaths were the best..."

YES! Thank you! Finally! Like I knew he will die, because everyone cries about it, so it was not a plot twist or anything, but it definitely was the best part of the book.

Aria (ariareads) SO FREAKING GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE!

Neeke Thank you for this review 😂 it took me 5 years to finish this book (well.. Had to put it away for some years), and at some point just finished it out of spite. Didn't help that Achilles is pretty much my least favourite character ever, but I wanted to understand why people go crazy about it. Still have no clue though 😂

Every time I see someone gushing over this book I feel like 'do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head' lol

Courtney Thank you! I really wanted to like this book because I wanted a soft gay love story about two warriors. There could have been so many cool battle couple tropes. Instead they chose to highlight all the disgusting things from that era. At one point they explicitly detailed a spear going through someone’s head. What was the point? And women were traded like commodities and if you got to rape one you were considered a god among men. And the word rape wasn’t even mentioned! It was called ravishing! I plan never to think about this books again if I can help it

Courtney Not to mention it was boring as hell!

Daniel Flint I literally don’t understand why she didn’t spend most of the book having petroclues reflecting about Them in the caves for three years growing up and then realize if the love each other and THEN just have him go back and forth to present day to war together and none of the other crap! Dang like I could write a better one!

with this going back and forth in time idea you just made the story less awful in my head

Caitlyn H i’d never even considered Breisis having SS. i totally see it.

edie ✩ but the thing is, it's war. and i will agree with the fact that this "I could not even see the ugliness of the deaths anymore, the brains, the shattered bones that later I would wash from my skin and hair. All I saw was his beauty, his singing limbs, the quick flickering of his feet." is a little messed up, but keeping briseis rather than letting her be raped was the best they could do. what did you want her to do? swim away? she couldn't go 5 feet without being killed, as we find at the end.

No, I agree keeping Briseis was the right thing to do, but I hated how it was painted like they are friends and a big happy family now. They still killed everyone she knew.
