it was amazing

Feel-good novel of the year? Here Stephen King steps aside from horror to write a poignant little novella on unity, tolerance and rising above the fray. Of course there is also a supernatural twist. For me it works because of its brevity and not in spite of it. Just enough is explained to inspire reflection, without ever getting too political or caught up in unnecessary adventure. The ending image is mesmerizing. I love the emotional finality of it, although I'm not entirely sure how to interpret it. Anybody want to start a discussion?

As an aside, I feel the audio version is a must. Stephen King narrates it himself and the added personal touch enriches the experience. Also, the audio version includes a bonus short story called Laurie (also read by King) that was published for free on his website a while back. It's an okay story, not amazing on its own, but meshes well with the themes of Elevation.

Lisa Excellent review Justin! I’m adding this one to my audible list. Thank you for sharing 🙂

message 3: by Laura (new) - rated it 5 stars

Laura Bruckman I thought it was both heartbreaking and beautiful. It reminds me a lot of his son Joe Hills story Pop Art which broke my heart as well but in the most wonderful way♡

message 4: by Karen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Karen Just finished it and loved it. I will not be ashamed to admit that I was bawling my eyes out at work when I turned the last page and read the last sentence. The town people remind me so much of the very town I grew up in. If you weren't from there or weren't smart, beautiful, athletic, etc. you were nothing. I totally connected with the Dierdre and Missy because of that and Scott - I was Team Scott immediatley!

Justin Tate @Karen I was right there with you! I know all these characters and could really relate. Glad you liked it :)

Dorothy Good review.I couldn’t say it better.

Morgan Ooooh! Definitely need to check out the audio. I too loved the final scene imagery.

Laurie Must listen to the audio after I finish the book. Thanks for the info!

message 9: by Nancy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nancy Loved this book. The ending was perfect - sad but so sweet that his friends gathered to see him off. And yes, it would be nice if dying felt like that.

message 10: by Audra (new) - rated it 5 stars

Audra @Laura you are exactly right with your comparison to Pop Art! That was my favorite story in 20th Century Ghosts!

Veronica Calderon-Speed Loved your review and loved this book very much. It does, it makes you reflect about so many things. It nudges and tugs.

Es the Book Hoarder Will definitely check out the audio version

Christine I love your review, Justin. I'm not sure how to interpret the ending either, but I've decided to leave this book for my kids to read when I am near the end of my life. I'd like them to imagine my death in terms of the ending image of this book.

message 14: by Chip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chip My thoughts exactly. The story was ok but it’s themes of unity and tolerance make it timely and a must read. You have me interested in the audiobook now too. Thanks

Duane Timm It certainly ranks as a favorite. I not only enjoyed reading it, but I thought to myself, “I feel great, I feel elevated!”

Stephanie Warzala Just finished it on the subway, breathing in and out and clearing my eyes. Its beautiful and hopeful and I really really love it. Wasn't expecting this, so it was truly a beautiful surprise

message 17: by Justin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Justin Tate @Stephanie I can relate! Pretty much how I felt when it was over. This book is a good reminder that the author of Cujo is also the author of Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption. So good!

message 18: by Mick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mick Dubois I enjoyed the book and never listen to audiobooks, but I, would make an exemption for this one

message 19: by Simon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Simon I read this book in one sitting, having picked it off the bookshelf with no idea of what it was (other than an unusually thin SK book). An easy and light good-hearted story (with some important undertones) - I didn't realise SK had narrated an audiobook version so will definitely bookmark that to listen to in a few month's time.

joan davis Going to read this one love stephen king but a few of the new ones wasn't a fan of

message 21: by Wawa (new) - added it

Wawa Hals I felt elevated and liberated at the same time reading this book. It’s a simple piece but it let you take away a lot of things to sit in a corner and reflect on. I love the imagery / didn’t expect how the ending turn out to be.

Dianne Agree, the audio version is great! King narrating is what made this book so good!
I personally did not like Laurie, not much to it.
