I almost rounded up with this one because the ending was 1000% better than the first half, but I remembered how much I didn't enjoy the first 50% of the story and I couldn't do it.

Look, I think a ton of people are going to love this one. It's a cute story about a closeted hockey player (automatic bonus points because HOCKEY) and his smoothie-making love interest. There is a lot of sex (more on that later), and I know the story will find its fan base. However, this wasn't the kind of story I typically enjoy.

I have certain requirements when it comes to my romances, and it's really important for me to have a slow burn. If the book is exceptionally good, I can do a quickie and insta-love at first meeting, but that's like a once-a-year exception for me.

Game Changer had such a rapid turn from meeting to love that my head was spinning. I really don't like when we get hook-ups and lovey dovey stuff in the first portion of the story, and it was just too fast for me to feel like any of it was real.

Plus, those non-stop sex scenes. I actually skimmed all of them after the first two because constant sex without that sexual tension build-up does nearly nothing for me. It was excessive for my tastes, and I just wasn't into it at all.

The first part of the story felt superficial, repetitive, and formulaic to me. However, after the 50% mark things started to turn around.

I honestly was happy at the sappy last 25% of the story. I'm a romance reader, so gestures of romance make my heart happy. Though I still don't believe that someone with as much on the line as Scott would move so fast after just a few months of dating, the last portion of the story was much better for me and nearly bumped my rating to 3-stars.

I'm sure this book will do really well, and I'm happy for the author for getting her first book out there (no small thing!), but I don't think I'm the audience for this kind of story, hockey MC aside. Though I'd tune back in if the author went with an enemies-to-lovers or slow-burn theme for her next book in the series...

Laxmama My thoughts to a tee- It’s as if you are in my head - unfortunately I will never be able to make my reviews come out like this.

Great minds, baby! And it's really just me rambling! ;)

Ariana (mostly offline) Sex without romance or some kind of feeling is simply doing nothing for me, either. Great thoughts.

Eve I’m on 40% mark, I’m about to give up. Too sweet, too easy, too much sex, no conflict... I hope you’re right about the second half of this book :)

HAHAHAHAHA!

French_fry I don't disagree on this book but I would highly recommend her second book Heated Rivalry which is such a great enemies-to-lovers journey. I was hesitant when I read the description but it's fabulous.

I already read and LOVED the second!

Dancy I'm on the 25% mark and couldn't help giving up because the repetitive sex without conflict. Wanna jump to the second book in this series😂

Do it! The second is SO MUCH BETTER!

message 18: by Eugenia (new) - added it

Eugenia Thanks for your honest review! I started the audiobook and couldn't get past the first few chapters due to the narration. When I picked up the book, I couldn't go on due to the insta-love and lack of tension between the MC's. It's a shame since I really LOVED the second book of this series!

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) The second book is 10x better!!

Lulu ...but the courage to read the 2nd book when the first one was awful!

I know! I had it!

BookHarpy Ironically I read the 2nd first, which actually helped me enjoy the 1st one better somehow. Agree that Heated Rivalry is the far superior story 😍

I think that's the way to do it!

LIZETTE I am about a quarter through but struggling with Kip's voice on the audiobook. Anyone else?

Cato You summarized my thoughts on this book so well! Thank you for this review!

message 28: by Tina (new) - rated it 2 stars

Tina I completely agree with your points. There was not enough character development to justify the insta-love. I couldn't understand why Scott would trust a virtual stranger with so much on the line. If there had been a slower build-up, such as a few friendly outings that built the tension, I would have enjoyed the book more. I ended up not finishing.

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) Cato wrote: "You summarized my thoughts on this book so well! Thank you for this review! "

I'm due for a re-read of it! But I'm not expecting much improvement. Though I loved them in the show!

The show does the instalove better!!

Alina this is EXACTLY how i feel, word for word. 100% agree.

message 32: by Aidan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Aidan Stewart Unfortunately, that’s kind of how gay dating is. Hook up on the first encounter is the norm.

message 33: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff I mean, it's erotica. That's how it be.

Melissa 100% agree with this. Hated the narrator most of the time and the first half was so boring even with the hot spicy scenes that I didn’t know if I could finish it.
