it was ok
bookshelves: netgalley, read-2018

I'm one to admit when I just do not get the hype on a book. This is one that I just did not jump on the train with. I am bit confused by it actually.

The majority of the book is about Romy, who has been sentenced to two life sentences for murdering her stalker. She is poor and worked as a stripper..so she basically stood no chance in the justice system.
This part of the book kept me interested. For some sicko reason prison type dramas are one of my favorite subjects...and it does not have to be farting unicorn type storylines.
For example..one of my favorite shows of all time...

This one is sorta dark. The women in the prison are not being portrayed as innocents..they did their crimes. So it was not that that kinda soured this book for me.

It was the jumping time line and viewpoints. You had so many different storylines that were thrown into the mix that NEVER came together. At the end of the book I thought maybe it would all tie in but it doesn't. It was just random. Then when Romy's crime is finally explained I did not really like her much either.

I may need a warning on some books that I'm just not smart or edgey enough to get them.

Booksource: Netgalley in exchange for review.

Carol, She's so Novel ꧁꧂ Ugh, I hate multiple POV & jumping storylines.

Kat Montemayor I totally feel you on the prison thing. Right now I'm reading a series about a prison planet that is complete hell, and I love it!

Laurie (barksbooks) I hate when that happens with a book :(

I think my reading mind is broken. I have a hard time liking much lately.

Kelli Same, same, same!!

message 13: by Eve (new) - rated it 4 stars

Eve I agree about the storylines. If they had all tied together somehow it wouldn't have bothered me as bad.

Lynn Steinberg I agree! I sort of feel clueless about this one. There were aspect that I did understand and really liked, but the chapters in a different font...who and what was THAT?

Val. Good review. My favorite part was when you said Wentworth is your favorite, because, SAME! It's my favorite too haha!

I'm currently in a beat-the-clock library challenge with a book that is due to disappear. Maybe next week???? I'll probably forget about it by then.

debra I've found that many times arty farty suckiness is a prereq for the short list. : )) *Hauls out bazooka for future trolls*

message 22: by Amber (new) - rated it 1 star

Amber Lynn Steinburg, thank you! I was so confused by those chapters too, I thought it was just me, also I'm confused about why Doc's story was included.

message 23: by Betty (new) - rated it 3 stars

Betty Ann The characters seem unfinished.

Kenisha Do we ever find out who the anonymous blog-type chapters are? Or did I miss something?

message 25: by Maritza (new) - rated it 1 star

Maritza Doc's chapter was disturbing in a pointless, flat way.
"The scumbag raped his own five year old son... guy wasn't even done zipping up his pants. Kid crying, bleeding from his anus."
........
One sentence follows that paragraph before that portion of Doc's story ends and we move on to other characters.
I felt gross even typing that just now. I get that many authors are descriptive in a shocking way but if these various character's stories didn't feel so damn disjointed then maybe we could experience empathy for these terrible, tragic recountings. Additionally how do we encourage authors to somehow add trigger warnings. I do not handle pedophilia content well. (Why would anybody?)
I'm not done with the book but seeing how others are having similar experiences as myself, encourages me to not put myself through trying to finish it.

Richda Mcnutt I think you nailed it - I tried, but I just couldn't get into it.
