really liked it

Very funny but also very topical: what happens when those in charge curtail civil rights such as freedom of speech and impose ridiculous penalties that do not fit the "crime". I was laughing out loud towards the end, when there were so few letters left in the alphabet that could still legally be used, that sending a letter was a chore indeed!

An excellent reminder that we must uphold our rights and freedoms in order to maintain a free and democratic society.

P.S. How dense am I? I only just realized that the title is a play on the letters of the alphabet:

L M N O P = Ella Minnow Pea!!!

Book Concierge I re-read it during this past COVID year ... didn't find it quite so funny as previously. Still one of my favorites, though.

I know what you mean. I have sometimes gone back to old favourites from my youth and wondered why I got so excited. It's like the Olympics: 5 minutes of fame for breaking the world record, but someone comes along and breaks your record. Or, maybe, once we've heard the joke once, it loses the element of surprise? I look forward to many book chats with you! Stay well!

Cecily I may not have enjoyed the book, but I was heartily amused by your PS!

I hear you: we have to laugh at ourselves and fall off our plinth every once in a while! Happy reading Cecily!

Debra Great review, Susan! I would not have picked up on the title had you not mentioned it!

Well, neither did I until about a year later!!! It still cracks me up!
The story got farcical as more and more letters became illegal. Very difficult to convey your meaning with no vowels!

Rosh I had added this book only after I realised how clever that title was! Glad to see you enjoyed the word play. Great review, Susan! :)

I will admit that sometimes I got a bit tired of trying to decipher what the characters were trying to say to one another. Not a book to read after you've had a hectic, bothersome day at work, but it did take your mind off of things! Funny in places, but also a reminder that if we over-regulate things, we risk losing all of our freedoms. But we silly humans can be selfish so unfortunately we do need a good set of rules in place!
