Don't get me wrong, Sophocles is a great playwright. But could Oedipus have really been that stupid. If someone made the prophesy that you would kill your father and make your mother your wife, don’t you think you would have been a little more cautious. Don't you think at any point he would have said "Hey, that guy is old enough to be my father an he looks a little like me. I probably shouldn’t kill him." Or perhaps he would have said "This lady is hot!...too bad she is old enough to be my mother and wait…she looks like me too!"

Stamatia There is an ancient saying in Greek that roughly translates: When God wishes to annihilate somebody he first makes him a fool. The point of the tragedy is that Oedipus wanted the power of being king so much that he never stopped to ask those questions. It's human nature to turn a blind eye to the facts that we do not wish to acknowledge

Cody Joe Bärfuß Very good point. It's no wonder why he blinded himself in the end. The symbolism is definitely there.

Rory Stephens I have to agree. Oedipus was incredibly stupid throughout the play. For me, it was nothing but blatantly frustrating watching him figure out what was going out until the very end. The play began with him being told he was the killer. Then he was told that the old King was killed exactly where he killed someone at exactly the same time. Then he was told that he was prophesised to kill his father and marry his mother. Killing the King and marrying his wife. Then he was told that the Queen had left her son to die in exactly the same place and exactly the same way (pegged at the ankles) he was left as a baby. Then he figures it out... Well done... Not even as entertaining as an episode of Columbo...

Cait Martin Age is relative the further back in time you go. Also he believed that the neighboring royalist were his parents and so was avoiding THEM and had no reason to suspect the man he had killed was his father. When you are so very sure of something, it is easy to overlook something that other might find obvious.
