Official announcement:

So after 650 pages of 850, Seveneves & I are going our separate ways. I've decided he's a bore. He just dwells too much on technical minutiae & I like to focus on people & characters & enjoy the adventure in books. I'm sure there are thousands who will love him for who he is.
He did try & change for me, bless him. He put on a silly hat, got me some flowers, but it wasn't enough to entice me to continue with him until the end. I'm sorry, Seveneves, I told you going in, either show me a good time or I will move on. I'm now out with Michael Robotham's Close Your Eyes & already I'm having more fun. No hard feelings Seveneves, you just gotta lighten up. It wasn't you, it was me!

Here is my parting photo for those who have enjoyed the journey on this thread, which included photos of Seveneves as he shared my life for a short time.

description

The Review
It was long, over-technical, and I couldn't finish it. At 650 pages with still 200 odd to go, I'd been skimming for about 200 previous pages, I gave up. There are too many great books waiting for me. I just felt the whole thing got away from the author. Shame, because it could have been great. The publisher should have broken it into 3 separate novels and really focused on getting each one tight with some pace and heart. The characters are flat.

But lots of people seem to have loved it, so obviously it comes down to personal taste. I would just rather be inside the heads of characters instead of being told about things. And I love technical stuff. I'm a science fiction nerd, but make the technical stuff interesting while you tell the story. Don't sprout it like a brain dump.

The thread for this review has been more fun than reading the book. I'm an author, so I don't like being critical of other authors. This book wasn't for me, but it might be for those who like loads of technical science stuff and aren't so much into characters and action. I just figure when you're in space and you're destroying planet Earth, why not go for it. So don't be put off by my thoughts. However, if you agree with a lot of my reviews then this won't be the book for you I don't think.

Dustin Oooh, you MUST keep me posted on this one, Susan! I am very interested in this book and author.:)

Susan May Dustin, it's soooo big! I will speak to you sometime next year. Lol

message 3: by Dustin (new) - added it

Dustin It is, but I like long, epic stories.:) ROFL

You're funny!

Susan May Dustin wrote: "It is, but I like long, epic stories.:) ROFL

Yes I just read Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, which was kind of big and dawdling. A generational spaceship. So why I'm embarking on another so soon is beyond me. I can barely hold the thing. lol

message 5: by Rosie (new) - added it

Rosie Ohh, I'd be interested to see what you think of this one as well. I've been considering reading it, but I didn't realise how big it is!

Susan May Rosie wrote: "Ohh, I'd be interested to see what you think of this one as well. I've been considering reading it, but I didn't realise how big it is!"
It is bigger I think than King's 11/22/63! Small printing. Thicker than a brick. It has mixed reviews, so I'm starting it very sheepishly wondering if I will enjoy. I'm giving it 100 pages. If I'm not sucked in, it's gone. A publisher gave it to me. Many trees died to make this one, so I hope it sells and the don't pulp too many returns. lol

message 7: by Rosie (new) - added it

Rosie Wow! Let's hope it's good :)
I guess if it's not so good there could be other uses for it to make up for the poor trees. Maybe a door stop?

Susan May Yes, or as protection in case of a break in. lol. Just don't drop on your foot. I think Stephen King said that about 11/22/63. lol

Yes, we are multi-tasking the books so the trees have not died in vain. I shall take a picture and put it up here. Even my son picked it up when he saw it by my bedside and said, "What are you going to do with that? How can your possibly read it, you can't even hold it?" lol.

message 11: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao hahaha

you're killin' me, susan

"what are you going to do with that?"

message 12: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Lol. I know. A publisher gave it to me over a breakfast & I thought I should get brownie points 4 accepting this. But she's a friend. I thought surely this is the perfect reason we have ebooks? But no, we must still have paper arcs so no electrons are killed in the process of delivering a book.

message 13: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao ...y'know, it's never occurred to me to wonder about that until just this second.

maybe it's thought the reception is more likely to be positive if the ARC weighs 14 pounds and requires a baby bjorn to transport to and from one's bedside table?

message 14: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Lol 'baby bjorn' and glad we've opened up these important discussions. But that would be a great marketing tool. One baby bjorn with each copy sold.

message 15: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May This book Seven Eaves by Neil Stephenson is so huge (in size) it has taken on a life of its own. It is bigger than my head. Tonight Seven Eaves came to see Vacation with me. He prefers science fiction since that's his genre but I heard him laughing once or twice.

message 16: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May And here it is naked so you can compare with my head. Where my hand is, is the normal size of a book. The rest better not be superfluous words.

message 17: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao hahahaha. my day is made.

message 18: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May I couldn't resist. I also put it up on my Facebook page and shared it with the Harper Collins publicist who gave it to me. lol. They owe me now for the FREE publicity. I don't even need to read it. I've paid for my copy through the promos. lol.

I just checked out Aurora. Sounds interesting. Three stars isn't too bad, eh?:) I guess you're in a science-fiction kick right now.

Good point. E-books are ideal for hugs books like these!

Rosie This conversation made me laugh! What adventures will Seveneves go on today?

message 22: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao I admit to some excitement as well. let us find out together

message 23: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May I can share that Eves (we've become much closer since last night, having actually read 70 pages) is sitting with me while I edit/polish Deadly Messengers. A picture will follow soon once I take a break.

He's asked that he be known not as the artist formally know as Seveneves but now simply Eves. He would like to be judged on his abilities and not his appearance, so I'm not allowed to refer to his size or mention Baby Bjorns in relationship to him. He keeps saying something about 'Good stories come in big packages sometimes.' Will report back later with photo.

message 24: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao haha. right on.

i wish i could read that book for the first time also. you're in for a helluva ride.

totes magotes. about a month ago or sommat. still gathering my thoughts, but I went on a Twitter rampage about the first arc of the story. I'll link you to a storify of it when you've hit the same part so I don't spoil you or anything—you'll know when you've gotten to it, trust me.

Okay, I will keep updating where I am, so you can tell me. Sadly no pictures of Eves today. He just wouldn't sit properly at the cinema tonight and I was too busy today with these edits for my book. Tomorrow, though...

message 29: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao it's a date. :-P

message 30: by Dustin (new) - added it

Dustin I'm looking forward to your statuses!

message 31: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Oh yes, I'm definitely taking photos today. It's raining, so I think Eves needs an umbrella today. We're in discussions on the shoot right now. lol

Dustin I can't wait to see them.:)

Susan May Sounds painful Julio. I'm going talk to him now. He's become a bit uppity, thinking he's a celebrity.

message 35: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao no, no, take your time

i'd rather you be reading it than negotiating a publicity campaign anyway

message 36: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Yes, for sure. Now I'm going to get that picture. lol

message 37: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao *mildly embarrassing squee*

i do love picture-time, after all

message 38: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Eves is editing today. I pointed out to him, I need to edit and that is my MacBook but, no, he's bigger than me, so I take second place. Will Deadly Messengers final polishing edits ever happen? Ask Eves!!

message 39: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May Nope, he's not giving up that Macbook. Come on, Eves, you might have a big head, but that doesn't mean there's anything but sawdust in there ....

message 40: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao it's the cap that truly toppled me into a full cackle

message 41: by Susan (new) - rated it 2 stars

Susan May I knew you'd like that! lol. What will Eves do on the weekend? As it is, I'm playing with him more than reading him, lol.

message 42: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao boooooooo!

Susan May julio wrote: "boooooooo!"

But I didn't think you liked the book. Did you like it?

message 44: by Julio (new) - added it

Julio Genao immensely. it's flawed, but gloriously so.

I couldn't stop reading it for three days straight, and halfway through I realized I'd been weeping continuously for hours, and then I wrote a thing about it, and then I finished it, and was just sorta stunned for a while, and then I read something else.

message 45: by Rosie (new) - added it

Rosie Wow Eves has been busy! I hope its a good story.. Haha

I'm not sure what goes on inside that big head of his. I'm too scared to look. Apparently most of the things he sprouts are pure fiction.
