SOLID 5 STARS!

Honestly, I think I'd have a difficult time finding a better example of a "quiet horror" book that delivers genuine chills! The southern atmosphere and isolation of the vacation houses of the two main families couldn't have been in a better location. With nothing except the shifting sands and surf for company, the scene here was set perfectly for a horror so unsettling, that even I couldn't predict what would happen next!

If you're looking for a gore/torture fest, you won't find it in these pages. What you will find is a creeping horror that inexplicably grabs ahold of your imagination from the very beginning. There are no "definite" answers here, either....which is something that actually ADDS to the fear factor tremendously. This is one story that I can see re-reading every few years, just to bring back that sense of utter foreboding that I got from it.

Highly recommended to fans of "quiet horror"!

*Re-read April 2016--If possible, I enjoyed the second read of this even more than the first! Not only will this book remain on my "Favorites" shelf, but it ranks in the top ten books I've read so far, period. The atmosphere--unspoiled by "knowing too much" reminded me much of the feeling I get when reading Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows". This is a perfect example of horror at its best, in my opinion.*

**Re-read April 2018--Obviously one of my favorite books, EVER! I still feel this is atmospheric horror, at its absolute best. **

Loved it!

Pamellia Loved it, also. But what was that worm things at the end. It wasn't an Elemental was it? I thought they could only appear stuffed with sand? Was it just a random being who liked hanging out with the E-group...perhaps a sand worm?? Did I miss something? and my final question (for now, lol) Has the group read moved here?

Pamellia I read the whole thread over on Horror A and it helped me focus a bit more on specifics. I left a bunch of comments, too. LOL, wonder if anyone will ever answer or comment on them. I sort of felt like I was talking to myself.

Char Pam, you might want to put your post in spoiler tags. Just in case someone looking at the reviews, trying to decide whether or not to read it, sees them there?

Pamellia Oops! OK, Char, that's for the suggestion. I had a little trouble writing this review, as much as I loved the book, the review didn't flow well. THANKS!!

I can never remember the spoiler tags on GR...so I just deleted my earlier comment and will post on the buddy read site. :)

Jaksen I own it, started it, couldn't finish it. Maybe I'll try again.

Kimberly Jaksen wrote: "I own it, started it, couldn't finish it. Maybe I'll try again."

Jaksen, Have you read the "short story" The Willows, by Algernon Blackwood?

message 18: by Jaksen (new)

Jaksen Yep, read 'The Willows' and found it rather long and drawn-out. Unimpressed. As for the Elementals, I bought the book due to great reviews but couldn't get into it. The house full of sand kind of put me off as if you've got all that sand, why isn't the house starting to become water-logged and rotting away? Sand can be carried by water or wind, it's true, but I got the feeling this was a water-borne sand. Haha, getting too technical here, but I've seen many a house near the water, some which were carried away in storms, and that's the case with them. Maybe I read too much into things...:D

LOL! I think it's more a "supernatural" angle here....

Adam I assume you’ve read Charles L. Grant’s work, but, if not, check him out. He’s a master of quiet horror.

LOVE his work--especially the Oxrun stories. I still have some to get to yet.... :)

Bucky Buchanan (from Saratoga) Excluding Luker's fatherhood, there was absolutely nothing scary in this book.
