4.5⭐️oh the magnitude of the issues- racism, incest, domestic violence and child molestation addressed by this poetry of a book 😭
The story is hard to believe but then it's not, because it's 1941 and
maybe
fiction. The story builds from horrors of racial oppression, but also violence and hurt upon women by men in their lives.
The book follows a story of a young African-American girl named Pecola, about how she is consistently regarded as "ugly" due to her mannerisms and dark skin. As a result, she develops an inferiority complex, which fuels her desire for the blue eyes she equates with "whiteness". Her obsession with this throughout the book leads to a lot of actions and happenings which later leads to her insanity.
The story is told from a third person pov- Claudia, the daughter of Pecola's foster parents. Claudia laments her belief that the whole community, herself included, has used Pecola as a scapegoat to make themselves feel prettier and happier.

you know a book is going slap when it's banned in Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas and half a dozen other states 😌
There is really nothing more to say- except why. But since why is difficult to handle, one must take refuge in how.

"There is nothing more to say about the furnishings. They were anything but describable, having been conceived, manufactured, shipped, and sold in various states of thoughtlessness, greed, and indifference.
The furniture had aged without ever having become familiar. People had owned it, but never known it.
it's like if a poet wrote a novel 🤍"

"To tell it true, I was the only one could handle him. He’d go out and rob a bank or kill some people, and I’d say to him, soft-like, ‘Johnny, you shouldn’t do that.’
it's giving "what about the people he murdered?- what murder" 😭"
