Yikesssss. Well, then.. This was unfortunately surprisingly underwhelming. Often times even boring.

I'm going to start this out by saying that I think there was way too much sex in this book. Especially considering how bland said sex was. Like, after a few times... I got it, you know? No need for the million other sex scenes that followed. It just got boring really damn fast. Sorry not sorry.
Same thing could be said about them constantly saying "I love you" to each other. Like..... We KNOWWW, okkk? Now maybe finally say something else to each other that actually shows me that you love each other?? Because that would mean that, you know, you two are actually able to hold a conversation with each other that isn't awkward as all hell? Yea. That'd be great. Thanks.

And okay, okay. I am probably being a bit harsh, because there were a few sweet and cute moments between them. There honestly were. Really. The truth is, though.. I just quite frankly couldn't be bothered with it most of the time.
I think a big part of the reason for that is that I deadass did not even feel like it was the best thing for Kip to be with Scott. So why would I be rooting for them, then? Kip's life was literally miserable because of their relationship, and Scott did not seem to care about that for the longeeeest time. Hell, Scott was not only keeping Kip a secret, he was, at a certain point, also completely emotionally unavailable. Not listening to Kip's problems, not taking his issues seriously. I mean, come onnnn now. Scott was a nice guy and all, and I think he had all the right intentions, but this was not a good relationship for Kip.
And yea, when Scott did decide to come out, I'm not going to lie: It was cute. Damn adorable, even. Not just the actual coming out, but the whole vibe before and after. I liked how Scott's friends reacted, how Kip's friends messaged him, how Scott was truly out and proud. Yup. Cute. Cute. Cute. For sure.
Not enough to save the overall book, though. No. Unfortunately that was still quite the miss for me.

And okay, this might be the most insignificant and ridiculous thing to complain about, but omggg, I could not get over the name KIP. I know that some might think this name is absolutely adorable (*cough* Carter *cough*), but... To me? To me Kip means chicken. No, literally. Kip means CHICKEN in my native language. So every damn sentence, in my head it was like "chicken does this", "chicken does that", "chicken has SEX". And.. Just.. No. No. Not cute. Really not.

Anyway, that little side note aside, I just wasn't a big fan of this book. It had its moments, but overall it was nothing special or noteworthy, often boring, and it never truly gripped me. I wasn't invested and I was kind of hoping the entire time that the book would be over soon. Which is.. Not a good sign. Obviously.

Linh Awesome review Imme!! 🥰 I think Kip is a pretty lame name too.

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Linh — loll i know right????
Oh and thank you💗

message 3: by Lau ♡ (new)

Lau ♡ What a way to spoil a nickname 💀💀
Also, that cover is so pretty!! It's a shame the inside is not as good. Have you read the second one? Everyone loves that one but I thought it was too much sex too 🙈

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Lau — oh noooo, I was so excited for the second book! It was literally the whole entire reason why I wanted to read this book first!! And now you’re telling me that book has the same kind of boring never-ending sex scenes?? Way to break a girl’s heart😢

And yuppp. That nickname: officially RUINED💀 lol

message 5: by Lau ♡ (new)

Lau ♡ @Imme I'm a REALLY unpopular opinion, everyone loves the second one. I read it long ago, so I don't remember if they were boring or not. I only remember there were too many for me. I prefer more romance. I hope you love it 🍀🍀

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Lau — aha well, I also prefer more romance, so chances are that I’ll agree with you! But we’ll see. Hopefully i’ll still like it! Thank you x

message 7: by Elisa (new)

Elisa Glendenning (mostly off-line) Sorry it wasn’t better, Imme. Like Lau said, it’s unfortunate Kip means chicken in Dutch but it did make me laugh (sorry) 🤣 I liked the second book which is supposedly the best of the series. It had some issues but still an entertaining read. However, The Long Game is due out in April (Shane & Ilya part 2) and judging by the reviews from trusted friends, is not to be missed!!!

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Elisa — lollll well, I’m glad the whole chicken thing could at least make one of us happy😂
I’m glad to hear you liked the second book, despite your issues. I’ll probably be the same.
And I’m excited to read their part 2 also if everyone is so enthusiastic about it! Hopefully we’ll both love that one!!☺️

message 9: by Mariam, (new)

Mariam, Is my life glitching??? I've never seen this cover before. I'm guessing this is book one and preach to you for reading this because I had ZERO-NADA, NYET plans to read book 1 cus everyone said it was boring lol. And interesting you say this book was very smexy because I think after book 2 or 3, the later books aren't that smexy anymore

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Mariam — hahaha nope, not glitching! You’ve probably never seen this cover before because there’s another cover for this book that’s used a lot more often! I just thought this one was way prettier, sooo here you go hhaha ;)
And, honestly, I think I should have followed your decision of never reading this book, because everyone was right! It is boring!! And it was actually also kind of long… so nuh-uh, definitely not worth it!
And interesting to hear that there’s such a big difference in smut levels between the different books in this series! I’m guessing I’ll find out what I prefer when I read them! 😉 I mean, that is, if I read them… Let’s first do book two at least loll

Nelly S. Sorry for the miss but you raised completely valid points. There was way too much sex in this one and I read the series in order so I kind of freaked out and wondered whether the rest of the books were going to be the same. They’re not, and the sex gets way way better! The strength of the series is that each couple is really distinct and their relationships and the way they develop are completely varied so they don’t follow a cookie cutter formula.

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Nelly — Thank you!!🖤 I am surely relieved to hear that! I, like you, was also kind of freaked out about the rest of the series being too similar to this (imo boring) book, but I’m glad to hear they’re all vastly different! That way there’s still hope I’ll enjoy the rest! :)

Rebecca I'm in awe that you managed to finish this book at all Imme, considering how the main character's name must constantly have bugged you 🤣🤣
I don't remember the excessive sex scenes but yeah, their relationship definitely wasn't the best. The adorable factor won me over though, I'm easy like that 🥰😂

Sorry this was such a flop for you, but I hope the next book more than makes up for this 🤞🏽✨

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Rebecca — lmao thank you, i also found it quite the accomplishment that I finished!😂
I totally get what you mean about the adorable factor winning out for you: I’m sometimes the exact same way; ignoring all the bad things because of the cuteness. But for some reason that just wasn’t the case for me with this book😕
And I hope you’re right about the next book winning me over! I’ve heard so many good things about it, I’m literally going to riot if I end up not liking it lolll

♡ cal ♡ omg well i feel like im the only one whi genuinely liked this 🤣🤣 hoping book 2 will win you over!! thats like the only gold in this series

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Cal — I meann, I wish I liked it! And I can totally see why some people would.
I am definitely crossing my fingers for book 2; hopefully it’ll be as great as you and a lot of other people are saying it is!!☺️

~Nicole~ Hahaha .. I get why Kip might grate on you if it means chicken haha.
I liked the book. It had indeed too much sex but then again, all Rachel Reid’s books have too much sex in them. Great review!! 💕

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Nicole — Yea definitely not the best meaning for a name hahah
I’m happy you liked the book❤️ and i’m not sure how Reid’s books usually are, but I did like Heated Rivalry despite it having a lot of sex as well. I think it might be because the sex here felt so bland and unemotional, mostly due to me having no connection to the couple! Yea idk, i just didn’t like this i guess haha😅

Christina Lmaoo I felt the same way, awesome review<33

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Christina — Thank you💜 And i’m sorry to hear this book was a miss for you too!

message 21: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi Great review, Imme! You had me laughing so hard about Chicken! I'll never look at that name the same again.😂

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Cyndi — hahah, well, I’m happy I could make you laugh😂 I’m sorry for ruining the name for you though LOL

Megan [At The Cottage] I couldn’t even get through the sample of this one without rolling my eyes and I hated the name Kip too. Names aren’t always a dealbreaker, I hate the name Chet and loved a Neve Wilder book that had a MC with that name but Chicken LoL 😂 Unfortunately, I didn’t like Heated Rivalry because there was too much sex and not enough couple time. I’m the unpopular opinion since everyone loved that book and after reading samples of other books in this series and not liking them, I took all of them off my TBR. I hope your one of the people who love HR and the rest of this series though. 💗💗

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Megan — hahah yes sometimes it’s really easy to get stuck on certain names, and this was one of ‘em for me😂
I can totally understand why HR would be too much sex for you. Going into it, I thought I would be the same, but I ended up loving the book! I also enjoyed book 3, and am now gearing up to read book number 4😉 I’m sorry the whole series didn’t work out for you! I’m glad that for me the only miss seems to be the first!😅

message 25: by Pam (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pam _P who cusses A Lot It bothered me, because the more popular nickname of Christopher is Kit. Where did the author's P come from? Weird lol Great review!

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Pam — Wait, his real name was Christopher? Seriously? Then where indeed did freaking KIP come from?😭🤣

Drache.... (Angelika) Well Imme, I should just have read your review before reading Game Changer.. 🥰 I felt like you, too much sex, too few conversations, I just didn't get why they fell in love.

Drache.... (Angelika) Oops I forgot: amazing review, Imme! 💜

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Drache — Aww I’m sorry you had a bad experience with this one too🙁 Although, of course, I’m glad u agree with me haha

Juliëttaaa Aaah, I’m also Dutch and the fucking name kip was annoying the SHITTTT out of me like the entire time.

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Juliëttaaa — omg yes right!? It’s so weird lmaoo

Drache.... (Angelika) Yeah I couldn't get into this either, did not enjoy it. Too much sex too little emotional connection.

Imme [trying to crawl out of hiatus] van Gorp @Angelika — Yup, exactly! That’s honestly the worst combination in my eyes🥴

Cat the bookworm (semi hiatus ish) It’s the one I’ve liked the least in this series 😕
