really liked it
bookshelves: distant-lands

i can't say anything about the plot of this book because the dust jacket pleads with me not to and i am nothing if not obedient. (but you can read plot points in all the other reviews by rebels) i will say i loved it enough to order in and set aside his earlier book, which had never called out to me before. and this is my favorite cover ... ever.

Greg You are obedient.

Michelle I too love the cover!

message 4: by Erin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erin Haha! Too funny because the cover is exactly what caught my attention at the library and makes me want to read it. I'm glad someone else isn't afraid to admit that!

Randy Karen, you have too much faith in book publishers and their minions. Is there a book cover formula or logic? I find these cover art selections have little to do with the book and attract us on a primitive sexual level so we reach the shelf see that orange to black contast and pick it up. Do we browse the pages? Yea, nea...what about the praise blubs...how many thousands of usages of "STUNNING" and "HAUNTING" and "A MESMERIZING TOUR DE FORCE" do we have to see before we cover the pulp shelves in vomit?

Of course, like any obedient GoodReader I always check here when my book discussion wants to find out about a book's juice.

karen huh. can't say i felt anything sexual when i saw the cover. maybe you meant "primal"?? just as a visceral response to pleasing color choices? this cover is undeniably beautiful and is also representative of the book's contents, but it is the jacket copy that is playful, ambiguous, and intriguing. and i think it was a clever and unusual way to go about it. i mean, who wants to read another plot synopsis that is all "women, sharing a past tragedy, how their lives diverge and how they come together again once more" kind of thing?? yawns. i think i am just confused about what your specific complaint it - you don't like snazzy book covers or blurbs?? or plot synopses? is there a better way to draw attention to a book immediately??

me too. thanks for taking a moment to look at the picture and commenting.

Brian R. Mcdonald I can't say that anything about the cover either caught my attention or intrigued me, but I am glad that it did draw other people to what so far [I'm about 100 pages in] seems like a very good book.

karen oh, i just think it is so gorgeous - that color, that script, the two women's heads, even the little rectangle for the author's name - to me it is perfect. and then they had to go and put out a third cover for incendiary which i already owned that matches this one, so i had to buy it AGAIN!!

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* The cover is really wonderful! I don't know if yours is the yellow and black one I have but I thought it was perfect for the story.

karen yes!! that is the one i have!

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* It was a recommend from a friend - we do a book a month together - and when I saw the cover I fell in cover lust pretty bad. I love the blue and black one for Incendiary too. Must own!

karen i fixed it so it wasn't lying and saying that i had read that uggee one.

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* ha, good job! I did look and was a little hmmm I think my cover is much prettier but we have the same cover so yay!

Ace Varkey A friend sent me this novel and I was hooked on page 1 before I took a good look at the cover, which is, as you note, compelling. Cleave is an amazing writer. Such a fabulous story, told so well. He really got into her head and into another culture. A true feat.
