“When we see it, we understand it.
And when we understand it, we care about it.
And when we care about it, we’ll do something to help save it.”

Suzanne Simard

I admit the science and sometimes text book quality was sometimes challenging to me, especially because getting distracted or falling asleep is so easy with audios and the author has an especially soothing voice.
So I took it very slow, one chapter at a time, rewinding at times.
When finished I watched the documentary Fantastic Fungi on Netflix.
I was surprised at my emotional response. Tears from me are an endangered species.
Doubly surprised that Suzanne and the documentary left me with some hope, an almost extinct species in my world.
If reading this sounds interesting but daunting to you, I highly recommend the film or watching Simard’s Ted talk How trees talk to each other.
There are people out there who are trying to make a difference and we need to listen.

Suzanne Simard
“I don’t presume to grasp Aboriginal knowledge fully. It comes from a way of knowing the earth—an epistemology—different from that of my own culture. It speaks of being attuned to the blooming of the bitterroot, the running of the salmon, the cycles of the moon. Of knowing that we are tied to the land—the trees and animals and soil and water—and to one another, and that we have a responsibility to care for these connections and resources, ensuring the sustainability of these ecosystems for future generations and to honor those who came before. Of treading lightly, taking only what gifts we need, and giving back. Of showing humility toward and tolerance for all we are connected to in this circle of life. But what my years in the forestry profession have also shown me is that too many decision-makers dismiss this way of viewing nature and rely only on select parts of science. The impact has become too devastating to ignore. We can compare the condition of the land where it has been torn apart, each resource treated in isolation from the rest, to where it has been cared for according to the Secwepemc principal of k̓wseltktnews (translated as “we are all related”) or the Salish concept of nə́c̓aʔmat ct (“we are one”). We must heed the answers we’re being given.”

Kelly I love this book but the quote at the top of this review is lifted from a quote by Jane Goodall: "Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help shall all be saved." I am sure that Dr. Simard was a fan and reader of Jane Goodall.

Mackenzie Bowlin I totally agree! I’m halfway through the book currently, and annotating it is probably the best decision I’ve made in my history of reading text-book style books. The way the Simard writes is perfectly set up for a “study session” when reading it. Although it was gifted to me for my birthday, I am loving the interwoven details of Simard’s lifelong passion for trees and the logging industry. I can’t wait to watch that documentary and the TedTalk!

Great Mackenzie. Simard's book is particularly intriguing due to her beginnings in the logging industry. Hope you enjoy the films. What's not to love about trees!
