Other parts didn't work well. I don't feel like I know the characters, Pop is almost villainous, and *sigh* Big Misunderstanding. *headdesk*
Though in defense of the author, she handles the Big Misunderstanding pretty well. We could even debate whether it's a Big Misunderstanding at all. We could, perhaps, thumb-wrestle over it....more

Some minor confusion at references in-book to a previous mystery, but nothing that makes this book hard to grasp.
I liked the setting and most of the characters. The mystery itself was a bit blah. One plot bit with a person with anger issues felt badly skewed and overly sympathetic despite horrible motives.
I will also state that I would resist even trying chocolate and beetroot muffins....more

It's okay. The characters don't really shine and boy howdy are there some dumb decisions being made. But it's very readable and pretty enjoyable.

The "war" aspect of it feels extremely undercooked.
So many of the reviewers flag anachronisms that aren't, which is weird. Baseball, electricity, typewriters, and elevators have all existed for a long time, and all still exist now. They could certainly all exist at the same time in a fantasy world....more
